When I was a kid (late 1960’s) I was going through my father’s shop and came across a strange hose. My father said it was used to fill car tires. Apparently you pulled a spark plug and screwed in one end of the hose, cranked the car and used the pressure from the car piston to inflate the tire.

I have one of these myself, made by Schrader. Because carburettors rely on vacuum to draw fuel in, with the pump in the spark plug hole it can't draw fuel through, especially with the ball valve inside the pump acting as a one-way valve, so no fuel vapours can get into the tyre. They're very fast too!

Thank you Andrew for your highly enjoyable work. I'm the son and brother of very accomplished conservationists and add to the effort in my Catchment Management work. I have driven 4x4's fromthe tender age of 11 ( first was a Willys CJ2A 1947 model) until now in my work and great pleasure on tough trails, overlanding and training. Your series touches my senses in the 4x4 tech world, wilderness cinematography, adventure and just good storytelling. Thank you Sir! My dream vehicle? I agree about the cell coverage in the UK. It’s deteriorated massively too since 2013. You now can’t rely on signal being there in many medium sized towns and even parts of London. I now carry a Starlink dish in the back of my Land Cruiser so I can get mobile data in the UK!

When you replace a high IQ population with a low IQ population the infrastructure soon falters. South Africa is a prime example. Cell coverage is the least concern.

Land Rover’s integrated air compressor for the new Defender works exactly as you’re describing. You set it digitally to the pressure you’d like to inflate the tires to and it stops at the set pressure. It will also do the same for deflation, set to the low pressure you want and it will stop automatically.

If you want a tire inflator that is very fast and has presets, I suggest you might have a look at the Milwaukee m18 inflator. It is surprisingly fast and very accurate. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. Then, since you would now have the battery required, you could get a top-notch cordless impact wrench that will use the same battery. Just a suggestion based on my own experience. I'm a long-time fan, Andrew. Thanks for the years of stories and adventures that I will most likely never get to experience for myself. My all-time favorite is still the way you tell the nuisance baboons in camp story. I've probably listened to that story 50 times by now. Legendary tale. That's just a simple/cheap regulator under the bonnet on the air compressor.
It would be easy to plumb up an air line to the rear of the vehicle, with a second regulator and another quick connect.
You could inflate front tyres to one preset pressure and then take your hose to the back, plug it in to the other regulator, and inflate rear tyres to a different preset pressure.
