That was a pretty interesting video. When I was car shopping, I would analyze the Carfax as well to establish a mental narrative about what happened with this vehicle. Keep these up
I know I'm a little late to the party, but this was an incredibly educational and useful video. I am a new subscriber, just on the basis of this video, and I'm looking forward to more like this.
Tomi, you need to know that a dealer, service facility can opt out from reporting to Carfax. This is more common that most may think. My other experience is that there maybe a lot of incorrect info. Buyer beware. Always do a 3rd party mechanical inspection.
I've also seen dealers add oil changes to my carfax when there wasn't a oil change that day. My thinking is they want the carfax report to look good if they take it in on trade
If true you need to find a different shop... Cuz that's ridiculous and shady. Also its not "common" for shops to not report. Its actually common for them to report. Ill challenge you to just call 10 random shops in your city and ask if they always report to car fax on services..... Sure they could be lying to you but 99% will be telling you the truth as if they are trying to be a long term business it just makes sense to report as its not like it is hard to do for them... But what do i know its not like I've dealt with many many many cars over decades @@agger838
As an owner of a 2011 as a 3rd owner since 2015. I have done 90% of the maintenance myself. You can't judge a car based on a car fax. I also take it in once in awhile to see if the Subaru dealer sees anything i didnt
I sold my old RAV4 at an AutoNation Toyota Irvine to get rid of it. It needed some mechanical work and had 191,000 miles on it. I kept it in my garage in the CarFax app. It showed the maintenance done to prep it for sale by the dealership with mileage of 191,700. The next record was for an oil change at three months later at Culver City Toyota and the mileage went down to 119, 720. Someone rolled back the odometer. There was even a note on the carfax that the mileage was changed. I talked to the service manager at Culver City Toyota to have the new owner contact me since he got ripped off and was promised that I would hear from them. Crickets. There have been several repair records added with some major repairs. I added a service record of my own that reads the new owners got ripped off 72,000 miles and left my number to call for information. We’ll see.
As a Canadian who lives in Alberta, this truck would not even be a consideration after finding out it was from Quebec. Quebec vehicles are famous for rust issues that destroy the entire undercarriage and suspension. Absolute no-go based on that alone.
I am reminded of when I did the carfax on my 2005 Grand Cherokee. Bought from the infamous Dave Smith in Keller, ID. Registered in Idaho. Then it pops up in an auction in Seattle 15 years later, where the gal I bought it from got it from. No service history listed at carfax. At the time I knew the service manager of Litha CJDR here in Portland and he pulled the VIP vehicle history from Chrysler. It got flagged by a Seattle CJDR dealer for being in police service so the lifetime warranty was void. Just by luck, he called the service manager in Seattle who remembered the Jeep. Long story short, it was a police seizure car they were using Miami Vice style…
What usually happens, is they get a deal where an inspection is included if you get your oil changed at certain spots, which explains probably why they only showed it once each year.
The problem with Carfax is that sometimes it doesn’t report all of the services that were performed at the dealership on that car. Or, sometimes the service center will put recommended services on the repair bill and Carfax reports it as the owner did those services when actuality they didn’t.
Definitely helpful. I've passed on some vehicles due to items on (or not on) the Carfax. I would like to see a video on how to spot a scam listing on the major car sites since I have seen a few UA-cam videos about scams where vehicles were being 'sold' that were not owned by the entity that listed them.
I looked into a vehicle once that was sold from one used car lot to another in less than a year. The engine had a tick, the salesman said it was an easy fix. My guess that the engine needed rebuilt and nobody wanted to put the money in it. I ended up buying a single owner vehicle with a regular dealer maintenance records. That was 12 years ago, and it’s still great.
Reading a Carfax is pretty straight forward other than the ownership section, it can be very confusing. I'm glad to see you were questioning the confusion in the ownership section! Many of them are very confusing trying to figure out the owner section. Great video, I love things like this, as it is real life situation. I'm an old dude that always had trouble figuring out ownership.
What I found shocking was when I went to try to resell my car at the dealership. I discovered that the dealership got a completely different Carfax from the one that I purchased!!! That actually showed that my car had been in previous accident. One that wasn't on the Carfax when I bought it from the Hyundai dealership!!! Don't you find that interesting?? I sure did! They also tried to wash the title and hide the fact that it was a rental car company. So Carfax is a scam in my opinion.
I also use carfax to determine what services car is or will be due before I consider buying it. In some cases, you can use those information as an advantage during negotiations. Also, I ask dealership for the PDI report to see what service(s) they performed because that can also sometimes raise red flags.
About the "Great Price" label. I've been looking for a fun car so I've had time to do a lot of searching. Just like you said, I have found is some dealers advertise a low price to get the "Great Price" label and then tag on high markups. I looked at one that added $1k if the sale was not financed and then added almost $2k for dealer prep and document fees. So much for the "Great Price". Since I am mostly looking locally I have been able to weed our the dealers that practice that.
Thank you for the insight! I do all my maintenance, so my 2011 CTSV Carfax will be blank in the service section. Does service only show if the work was performed by a dealer, or do private shops report service? Thanks again! -Michael
@@michaeljulian4997 my Honda fit was practically 100% serviced by an independent garage, had an accident, went to the body shop twice for accidents- 1 I was at fault and the 2nd I got rear ended. Airbags replaced at dealer on recall - everything was on the carfax when I sold it in 2017. Depends on the independents, but most I think report service but check with your local service provider.
Thanks Tomi. I've been looking for a used vehicle and have been paying attention to that part of the CarFax report as well. Saw one the other day that I thought might fit the bill, but then I saw a comment that said "Branded or Lemon Law" and stopped looking immediately.
Sometimes even a car dealer cannot understand a CarFax report. One of my all time favorite encounters with a car dealer was a couple of years ago at a Honda dealer in Maryland. We were looking to trade a vehicle. The dealer ran a CarFax and provided it to us. The dealer then provided a document which highlighted its evaluation of our trade. One of the costs the dealer stated it would have to incur to make the trade sellable was a full oil change service. The last thing listed on the CarFax was a full service of the trade vehicle done at a different Honda dealer the previous month.
Tommy, I was going to leave a comment letting you know how much I appreciate this type of video even before you asked us to at the end . This is incredibly helpful and educational and exactly what I'm looking for on youtube. Thank you so much!
Wish I watched this a week ago. I don’t feel I was screwed with my recent purchase of a used car, but I was misled. The printed history was very bare bones.. during the sale they didn’t once say the car was a rental. I only found out after, when I looked in the glove compartment and found a previous registration. I got a good deal, but now I think I could have shaved a little bit more off. At least the factory warranty is still on it.
I do my own oil changes. That will not show on any Carfax. Mine would only show warranty work. Also some people may not put an accident through their insurance company.
When I used to do my oil changes, I bought paper stickers that tracked oil changes. Then I stuck it in the glovebox on back of the door. It’s old school, but it stays with the car.
Pretty good info. Do more of just carfax reports. Lol. Just the ones with interesting stories. Maybe some odometer rollbacks. Ive seen clean carfax and then autocheck shows accident.
Thank you for this video. I’m in the process of purchasing my first car and the used car research is very overwhelming on knowing what to look for - specially in the Car Fax 😭More vids like this please on how to research and what to look for ! thanks !,
just a fyi that I bought a car only to find out it had been in an accident and yet it had a 'clean carfax'. It was damaged at a dealer who fixed it and auctioned it off. You really need to be careful
I have a question in regards to a bad carfax. I recently got into an accident with tow truck. But only damage was rim damage. I didnt think i would get a accident claim at all. On car fax it says side swiped. How can i fix remarks to say rim damage? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank u and keep up the great content.
There are a ton of cars in Michigan from Canada. Won't touch them with a 10ft pole. I also find the car on car gurus to see how long it has sat on the dealership. I seen a car that the tires replaced and then 6 months later replaced 2 tires. Always look at the service records.
I really enjoy your video regarding Car Max. Also your car buying negotiations. Would you also do a demonstration on talking to different dealers on purchasing a manufacturer extended warranty as I feel that a lot of them take advantage of customers in the finance department. If you start complaining about the price of a manufacture warranty, then they try to sell you one of those aftermarket warranty and I’ve heard some nightmare stories about taking your vehicle to another dealership in another city and if you’re on vacation, you’re stuck until the aftermarket warranty place approves the repair. And then what happens if it’s not approved, what are the repercussions.
Confirm the VIN first. I had a dealer recently slide me a printed copy of the carfax and was bragging about how clean it was. It was NOT the right VIN. Make and model was the same but was NOT the car be was selling.
I change my oil but the dealer had an oil change and inspection for $19.95. For that price I said do it.I got a car fax after the oil change and it showed the car went through 3 dealers before I purchased it as a new vehicle.
Hold it…. The first noted oil change was at 34,000 at the dealer. Along with it, the brakes were checked. You said that the first one was at 39,000. In Canada, CARFAX may or may not be able to access records readily as they can in the U.S.
One of the biggest areas of concern about CARFAX, and other such services, is how many repairs are done and never reported? So it does not show-up on the CARFAX or other similar services? Hmmm.
Confirm the VIN first. I had a dealer recently slide me a printed copy of the carfax and was bragging about how clean it was. It was NOT the right VIN. Make and model was the same but was NOT the car be was selling.

Hi 👋 thank you for your information but CARFAX is not necessary.I find a car I’m interested in.take down the Vin.Call my insurance company give it to my adjuster and free of charge will tell me everything about that cars history and how much i should pay for the car and its insurance payment all in a 10 minute phone call.
Random question, is there a way to return a recently purchased car from the dealership? I bought it about a week ago..there is nothing wrong with the car but someone gifted me an ok working car. I don’t need two cars, and better don’t owe any money…
No you can’t make a return on a loan lol , you sign the paper and it’s at the bank already , you can trade it in , try to get the most you can but if you’re negative you’ll have to pay the difference then you’re out
"No cooling-off period". It's in your contract you signed. Shop it around (Carmax, Carvana, GiveMeTheVin, dealers, etc.) and see what you can get for it.
IMO, you should always eliminate a car with no service records unless it has very low miles- 12,000 or less. A car with 18,000+ miles and no service records may never have had an oil change. Move on to the next car you are interested in. Also, fleet vehicles are also a NO unless you are getting an appropriate price for the risk/reward of owning a probably less than well maintained vehicle.
auction car from another country lacking proper service records, no thank you, and as a Canadian I would treat a USA vehilce in exactly the same manner, just not worth the risk of the unknowns!

How do you get a car fax on a car I’m selling ?
auction car from another country lacking proper service records, no thank you, and as a Canadian I would treat a USA vehilce in exactly the same manner, just not worth the risk of the unknowns!
Most independent auto shops don’t report to CARFAX
Hey Tomi, I enjoyed this, but didn't you already do this same video a couple of weeks ago?
I did this live. Maybe that’s what you saw.
Yes, good content. Negotiations are fine but can get to be fairly repetitive.
I never get tired of him making phone calls I get weary of him giving air to the trolls especially at end of the month when there are deals to close.
Could you show one that doesn't have a red flag
I traded in a palisade and made about 4k
The fact that you keep using the word investment in the car world is a Red Flag for me. I do like your videos though.
I am halfway thru the video. It's really cool but the drumming in the background...seems to get super intense and almost overwhelm what you're trying to say on stream. It's very dramatic.
Thanks for the feedback!
@ The content great, the mix of background songs though get odd later in the video. But love the investigative nature and deep dive behind the carfax.
10:54 Southern is an absolute shitshow.
Quebec cars = millage roll back
Epicvin is much better
You look like an old young man.
Great content
