      Hey @Scotty Kilmer Great videos on your channel and you definitely have a subscriber here. Question- I have a 100 mile a day roundtrip commute daily (90% highway miles). What is a reliable, sporty (good acceleration), used car that I can get for under 15K right now? My Buick LeSabre is undependable and I have been looking at used Lexuses, but they seem way overpriced or have been bought from Ontario. (I live in Michigan so cannot do a RWD vehicle.) Please help as I am looking to buy something AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

    Hi Scotty, as a former Mazda technician, my experience with the Mazda Protege was one of very few transmission warranty or CP claims. The effected cars with the associated transmission issues were the 626, mx-6, and 929. Basically the effected cars were the car built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant. The car built in the Hiroshima, plant were pretty much bullet proof, save the Rx-7. That includes the millenias, mx-3, and Proteges.

    Owned the 2001 version of sane car. LOVED IT!!! Wasn’t told of an issue it had. Every morning upon startup blew white smoke. Would not do it again all day. Had to sit for like 8 hours to do it. Still loved it. Ran excellent. No noises. Ran smooth.
    Sold it when I moved out of the state. Bought it because had older Protégés before that and all reliable. Always bought older ones to save money then sold to buy a newer or better version of an, again, old Protege. Owned every year Protege at one point. Only the 94 had a terrible tremble when in gear and stopped at a light or anywhere. An annoying issue with small 4 cylinder car of all makes in the 90’s. Even Corollas we’re doing it as the mikes got higher.
    My 98 Protege I got for $400 in excellent shape when owner was told by dealership engine blew. I replaced the cracked intake hose and all was well. He bought a new car there. Some of these stealerships are criminals.

    My daily driver is a 1999 Mazda 626 with the same 2.0 L. I also purchased it from a rental company for about the same price. I've used it for more than twenty years and at the current 270,000 miles, I can say the engine still runs great with very little oil consumption. I believe the engine was designed with oil squirters for the cylinders and might have something to do with the longevity. Also, as Scotty mentioned, the transmission is the weak point. Back in 1999, Mazda was using the Ford CD4E transmissions for this model.
    My transmission died at about 170,000 and was replaced with a rebuilt transmission at an AAMCO shop. The Ford CD4E may have been improved over time since I know someone with a 2003 V6 Ford Escape, same CD4E transmission, and it has over 285,000 and is still running strong.

    For the Chevy Aveo owner on the P0300: the ignition coils can go bad. My wife had one and it went through 3 Coil packs. The OEM went out at about 80k mi. The 2 replacements went out within 1k mi. It also needed the rear wheel bearing replaced. Basically, 80k mi was the junker sentence for that particular car. I've seen other owners get many more miles than that on the Aveo. It just wasn't going to happen on this one. The Aveo was actually a re-badged Daewoo. Just look under the hood for the Daewoo sticker on the underside. That made me silly with laughter.

    My wife bought a 99 Protege when it was a year old and we sold it in 2018. Same color as the one in the video but it was the base model. 1.6L, 5-sp manual and very fun to drive. The only options were A/C and the 6-speaker cd stereo. It was a very dependable car; the 1.6L even did not have an EGR valve. I did get a set of 15-inch factory aluminum wheels to be able to get high-performance all weather tires since it did not have anti-lock brakes and there are no good 14-inch tires available any more. It averaged about 30MPG in mixed driving. I still kind of miss it.

Great car, but MAKE SURE you change the timing belt and water pump. My dad didn't and the engine blew up in the middle of NSW lol. He still missed that car. When we towed it to our local mechanic he said he'd had a bunch of astinas in there with the same problem. Many people don't service the timing belt and it ruins the motor. The mechanic liked Mazda's a lot and bought the shell of ours for 300 bucks and he put a new engine in it.

    TIP: If you get an old / higher mileage car... DRIVE IT LIKE THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID! If it was taken care of { not floored to get up to speed & the brakes weren't slammed on all of the time etc. } But you start driving it that way, it will likely start having problems within a few months. Oil leaks from you now abusing it, compared to when the engine and transmission was babied for example. Brake oil leaks or blown brake lines from you braking late { and therefore hard, instead of looking ahead and getting off of the gas earlier and lightly applying the brakes. }
    Also: change the engine oil no later than 5,000 miles, no matter what the manual says. Keep that engine oil as fresh as you can and don't let the old & burnt oil stay in there. This will extend the life of your engine for about 1 extra oil change per year for most people. If it's an automatic transmission, DON'T manually shift gears when you're moving. This is NOT good on these older transmission, they weren't designed for that. { New autos can have that ability but NOT all transmissions, even new ones } Treat old cars as flying carpets made of cardboard and you'll get the full life span out of them.
