  • The "Nothing" fly is a very productive small dry fly when small black flies are on the surface.

    Hi Alec,
    I don’t usually leave comments on UA-cam channels but after today’s event I just had to post this. Today was one of the rare days so far this year on my local club water where dry fly fishing looked like it could be worthwhile. I started off with my usual go to fly which is a black top hat buzzer and I caught two on that in a couple of hours but had lots of short takes and snatches at the fly. On landing the second one I noticed the foam (top hat) had been caught in the netting and broken off so I sat down and had an early lunch! Then I looked for a new fly to tie on and next to my top hats I noticed some nothing flies that I had tied but not yet used so I tied one on. Wow. Instantly fussy feeders suddenly started smashing it. I had ginked it up lightly and in a short period of time I had completed my limit by catching and releasing a further 8. In that time I did not have to re gink the fly and it took fish that I had seen rising, also fished blind and finally when slowly figure of eighted back. I also missed quite a few.
    Can’t wait to try it again. Thanks for sharing the dressing and how to use it here.
    Regards
    John Powell

    Tied a few on Saturday, plus a variant with black ultra hair as a buzzer imitation. Fished on Sunday and had so many fish that my 2 mates raided my box and made off with the lot. We had one of our best days, ended up fishing one fly only because of double hook ups and resultant breaks. Cheers for sharing, have been told to get back to the vice before our next trip.

      That's brilliant Peter, if there is a lot of fish rising it sys to fish one fly., I tend to fish to flies 2 flies when there are no fish rising and fish them blind 👍🎣🐟

    Can I just ask what size leader you use with them eg 4lb fluro or 6lb ect
    Thank you

    • @alecharveyfishingandflytying
      @alecharveyfishingandflytying  3 роки тому +1

      Steve use a good quality leader with low diameter, if you use thick fluorocarbon the fish will cone up but just turn away, 4-6lb is good 👍🎣🐟

    If the fish were looking up but the water was too choppy for fishing small dries....what would be your go to method.

      Cheers Chris, washing line method is good when it's like that, foam mini daddy on the point and 2 unweighted nymphs on the droppers, fished very, very slow figure of eight 👍🎣🐟

    Hi Alec what rod are you using? And how do you prevent your tiny flies from sinking using Fluorcarbon?

    • @alecharveyfishingandflytying
      @alecharveyfishingandflytying  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Trevor, I use greys rods from 5wt to 8wt, when using small dries the diameter of the fluorocarbon and to be small, et a ood quality with low diameter say from 4lb to 6lb.
      Then obviously you can treat your your flies with floatant to keep them buoyant.
      Tippett is critical as if its to thick the fish often refuse the fly 👍🎣🐟

    Great video,, maybe you can help, I am using fullers earth to sink the leader but in flat conditions it doesn't sink and I can see it floating. What do you suggest

    • @alecharveyfishingandflytying
      @alecharveyfishingandflytying  3 роки тому +1

      It is always difficult in flat calm, you can purchase a fluid think it's zink which works opposite to gink and sinks the leader, what tend to do in flat calm conditions is add a dropper with a very small nymph, this helps the leader to sink and gives you an extra Chance of a fish. 🎣🐟

      Try adding a few drops of washing up liquid to a bit of water and mix it with a lump of blue clay (mud), it's free and works well. The detergent breaks the film.

    • @alecharveyfishingandflytying
      @alecharveyfishingandflytying  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Trevor, I use fluorocarbon leader straight through, I stop the fly line in mid air, this helps with turn over, you can also use a tapered leader with a fine end tippet, this also will help 👍🎣🐟

      @@trevorluft1763 I do when using the top hats as I want the option to skim the fly into position, so if my leader is say 15ft I would grease it up from the fly line end to leave the last 6ft to the fly not greased up.
