The '84 BYU debacle. Late season, Washington before a loss, was lined up to win the national championship. South Carolina!! Of all football programs had a chance to win the national championship before an inexplicable loss to Navy
South Carolina lost two games. They were beaten by Oklahoma State in a bowl game and finished 10-2. I suspect they would have lost to Oklahoma or Brigham Young. Brigham Young should have played Washington.
Even though I believe it's possible for the nation's best team to come from a weaker conference, Washington should have been voted the National Champion for this season. I will say however, that BYU had some bad luck with PITT in its non-conference schedule starting the year ranked in the top-10 but ended up with a .500 record.
The problem with Washington that year was that they turned down an invite to the Holiday Bowl. Had they played BYU they likely would have won and been #1
@josephciccolini1590 I don't agree - especially if Oklahoma had won the Orange Bowl over a big name school. Washington would have been passed over for the national title by Oklahoma as BYU wouldn't have been seen nationally as a viable opponent. This is something that happened a lot to Pac-10/12 teams not named USC or UCLA.
@@rss83073SFBayArea Possibly. But Washington would have had a better record than Oklahoma and had lost to a better team (Southern California, which won the Rose Bowl). Oklahoma lost badly to Kansas. But yes, the voters seemed to disparage the West Coast teams in those days.
Western Athletic Conference wasn't necessarily a weak conference. They were actually among the more prominent of the less established and it wasn't easy.
Sad part the Winner should have been National Champ. But they picked BYU that had a schedule that was so sickly weak. Every team in the WAC had 4 loses except BYU. WEAK WEAK. Played a 6 and 5 Michigan in the BYU Bowl (Holiday Bowl) . That is what brought about the change in college football. Started a computer rankings of teams because of that farce.
Actually I did a comprehensive survey of the Western Athletic Conference. It wasn't necessarily a prominent conference but it wasn't weak. Eighth of eleven. Top eight actually is prominent. It isn't necessarily a weak conference. It's diminished.
People wanted to see Brigham Young and Oklahoma. Washington took the place of Brigham Young in the Orange Bowl. Michigan was sixth in the Big Ten Conference. 6-6.

BYU was a joke as a national championship, they barely beat a 6 and 5 Michigan team in the holiday bowl. Only the pull it out in the final minutes of the game. Washington was clearly the national championship that year but only because BYU's coach was retiring after 20 years
@josephciccolini1590 Wait, you just contradicted yourself. They were locked in to play in the Holiday Bowl, so how could they play anyone else? They didn't refuse to play anyone.
@@MeIn321Brigham Young was obligated to the Holiday Bowl. I don't know if they had anyone other than Michigan interested. I suspect they offered invitations. Maybe they wanted Michigan. I don't know. It isn't like it lacked interested people or value.
@@joeppg Actually, Oklahoma was in four straight Orange Bowls from 1978 to 1981 (winning the last three) as well as 1985 (this one) to 1988 (going 2-2). Nebraska was in three straight from 1971 to 1973 (winning all three), again from 1982 to 1984 (winning only the 1983 game), and would later be in four straight from 1992 to 1995 (only winning the last one).
So Bob Costas wrapped up the other New Year's Day bowls by showing a Houston highlight from the Cotton Bowl and OSU highlights from the Rose Bowl... even though both of those teams LOST their bowl games. That doesn't make a bit of sense. Doug Flutie (i.e. the current Heisman winner at the time) threw 3 touchdowns in the Cotton Bowl and... nothing? This had to be one of the best Husky Bowl games ever, to watch...lots of excitement created by both teams.

I love how the Skycam video signal fails as soon as the Chrysler logo appears on the screen.
FYI! Former Washington HC Don James is a graduate and former QB at the University of Miami. He played his home games at the Orange Bowl!

We just flat got out coached and outplayed! I know I watched this at the time but conveniently forgot it!
Oklahoma QB throws his passes way, Way, WAY too hard. If he had good coaching, he would pass the ball with much less velocity.
We were a running team that only passed when we had to. Bradley wasn’t used to having to pass and really wasn’t adept to the art of passing.
