This was the first Tennessee game that I ever attended. I wasn’t a Tennessee fan in the least. I went just to have an excuse to go to New Orleans for New Years. The moment the gates opened the Tennessee fans ran into the Super Dome yelling at the top of their lungs. They never let up. The noise was incredible. By the end of the game I was a die hard Vols fan for life. What a day that was. One that rightfully belongs in the hearts and minds of Tennessee fans everywhere.

Miami tried to play that intimidation card and got bitch slapped for it. Classless move to stand in Tennessee T.

I remember watching this ballgame while at home from Christmas break from college. The bias against Tennessee was thick. When the game was over, I was singing Rocky Top and laughing at Keith Jackson and the rest of these announcers.

Miami thought they'd intimidate Tennessee by standing inside the "T" and woofing at them. They thought wrong. It was hard to shut up Miami players in the 80's, but Tennessee put on a master class in how to silence them.

I remember this game. No one gave Tennessee a chance; and you can hear the Miami bias in this broadcast, and when Miami scored my Dad said "this will not even be a game." I said; "I know Tennessee will beat Miami easily." Well they did. Tennessee used to play so much greater Defense Fundamentally. Secondary players getting their heads around on coverage and so many Tennessee players swarming to the ball to make tackles!

I was just a kid, but I remember them playing this on WIVK all the time! On New Years Eve Johnny Majors took a flight, down the Mississippi with his men of orange and white, the Vols had made a promise to win by any means, they had a day for battle at the dome in New Orleans, Fired up defense Miami kept a comin but they couldnt even kick a field goal, Testeverdi tried to pass it but they had to keep a runnin, because of big plays by Chris White and Dale Jones.

It was great watching Tennessee beat them. Tennessee had very good defense that year. Thought they would keep this game very close. Few breaks who knows, Miami didn't have answer for Vols blitzing . Tennessee offense was really good before Tony Robinson got injured

Our defense gave up 4.8 points per game over the last seven games of 1985, with three shutouts. That is phenomenal! BTW, Jimmy Johnson’s hair looks lit it could deflect a rifle bullet! He used more hairspray than a 80’s high school cheerleading team before that game. #GBO 🍊🍊🍊🍊

The mechanics of the officials are so bad. Unfortunately, that was the norm in 86. There is no sale technique and they move so quickly they look confused. It wasn’t until the mid-90s that officials began a disciplined demeanor.

I was newly married & still living in Knoxville at this point. The 1986 season was my first officiating football. We moved to Ft. Worth, TX a year later (in Jan. 1987) and I continued my officiating career. I later met the Referee, Wendell Shelton, Umpire Joe Darden (both from Dallas) & Side Judge, Beaux Hicks (from Houston). Beaux was a clinician for our state organization. I had no idea, watching this game, the impact those men would have on my career and life as teachers & friends over the coming years.
