Near the end of the game Gary Bender mentioned Nebraska’s next game would be at Syracuse. Well that didn’t turn out too well for the Huskers as they fell 17-9, effectively ending their National Championship hopes.

This game almost wasn't televised because in the crazy wild-west world of 1984 college football TV--just a few months after the Supreme Court struck down the NCAA's monopoly over TV rights--no one actually had a clue who would own the rights to a game between a team from the CFA (who had a contract with ABC) and a team from the Big 10/Pac-10 (who had a contract with CBS). CBS had to file an injunction against the CFA and it was ruled at the eleventh hour that whoever held the rights to the home team had the rights to broadcast a game, whether the opponent was part of the TV contract or not.

BYU won the Natty this year. Both these teams would have beaten them. Still Nebraska was better the year before. UCLA finished strong this season.

Now way, Florida was the legit National Champion in 84 AND 85. BYU and Oklahoma claiming titles those years are laughable.

@user-em1dw3ft6m Washington had the best claim in 84. I agree BYU winning was laughable especially beating a 6-6 Michigan team in Holiday Bowl. Would have been good to have 2 Champions in 84 with Washington and Florida. Oklahoma and Florida could have both been Champions in 85

@@nathaniellathy6559Florida lost Charley Pell after three games in ‘84 due to recruiting violations which in ‘85 made them ineligible to win the SEC or go to a bowl game. So no, Florida would never be considered for a National Champion. Plus, if you somehow forgot about the violations, they lost one and tied one in both seasons.
BYU ended up #1 in both the AP and coaches polls in ‘84. I trust the coaches opinion more than anyone on UA-cam.
