  • Christmas has become an orgy of buying under the pretense of giving. It's the time when the hyper-consumerism of our society hits its zenith and becomes truly obscene in its lust, envy and hunger for more.

I stopped buying Christmas presents 4 years ago and told everyone I don't need nor expect anything. I truly want to spend time together instead... PRESENCE instead of presents. It's wonderful!

bob, i have been living that way without really realizing it...after a divorce and loss of a son, 10 years ago i had moved onto a old boat (living space of 200 sq, ft) it unfortunately it sank (hitting a deadhead) and moved into a 160 sq. ft. of rv trailer and never thought of it as a minimalist life style, it's just what i did !!!
i live so cheap, my pension covers everything i 'need' , my rent space is $200 monthly (on a river and 1 mile from the ocean in a farm area in the country) and my truck and canopy is set up for camping, so i believe i'm really free and i'm happy !!!
    Merry Christmas

Expectations are not just materialistic - but with family too... That is where I have had my biggest let downs, wanting to be wanted or needed and not having that - Your video is so true about letting go of expectations. I need to start saying: I am happy today and let go of my expectations of expecting other people to make me happy - wonderful philosophy!

    • @CheapRVliving
      @CheapRVliving  7 років тому +14

You are very right. In fact, if you do a google search on expectations, most of it is focused on relationships where it is especially unhealthy and hurtful. But I needed to stay on a narrow focus here. Hopefully, there was something here you could use on relationship expectations as well.

You did a great job Bob, expectation is a deep subject that permeates every aspect of life. I was taught long ago that every situation in my life that i (or anyone else) was not satisfied with, came down to three things; expectation, perception, and judgment (with judgment being a two sided coin of condemnation and discernment). The older I get, the more obvious that truth becomes.

That thing was one of the reasons I fell for him. learned to drive stick shift in it. I miss it more than him. I don't know how old it is but I know it is older than the 80s. probly a 70s model.

Was just out at Wal Mart helping my gf get what little she could for her kids, her nor I believe in the huge machine it has become. The crowds are insane, extremely rude and annoying most having sub human manners...we both have PTSD and the crowds just kill us in several ways, anxiety goes through the roof. But I can agree with you on the insanity of all the materialism, I believe in simplicity and calmness and strait thinking in life. I feel like an alien and I do not belong to the masses they drive me nuts, call me anti social but I have my reasons and there good enough for me to avoid much of it...I seek a simple life outside the box, I don't care for most of the bs ppl THINK is important these day's...and is one of the reasons I am wanting an rv and when I discovered this lifestyle...I instantly became attracted to it.

I must share my bizarre and serendipitous evening. Tomorrow I am meeting my grand nephew for the first time and I have a small gift for him. I was happy with the gift I purchased and it fit within my budget. Then my sister sent me a video of our grand nephew opening the gift she gave him which was really a large box filled with a number of gifts. Right away, I started thinking about running to the store tomorrow to buy something in addition to what I had already purchased. Something he doesn't need because I felt my worth was based on the size of my gift.
Then, without intent, I came across the documentary "Minimalism." And as I watched, the stress of believing I needed to buy more left me. I highly recommend this documentary.
Then, near the end of watching that documentary, I received the ping that told me you had uploaded a video. When I saw the topic, I started laughing. The universe was sending me a message. Message received!! 😊😊

But Bob, it's not a bucket. It's a chamber pot and that Is acceptable as well as being historically minded. See, if you write Chamber Pot at the bottom edge of the bucket it changes what the bucket is. I can imagine that would even cause smiles in the RV community. It would make me smile, I like cheeky little things like that. : )

Christmas has become the darkest time of year for some of us and I think it is because of such materialism. Yesterday, December 23, I was shopping in the "Christmas" section when I saw two employs feverishly working. They were tearing down the remnants of the Christmas displays and putting up Valentines Day displays. This spoke volumes to me. Christmas is just another retail event for the store and we have bought into it.
You are so right about being happier after we turn away from expectations. My entire life changed for the better once I did that. Thank you Bob for bringing this message to the world. I am just sorry that more people cannot see it. (Sorry for the long post)

Excellent video Bob, you have a great way of getting the point across. I thought I really understood the way things work because I have been seeking happiness for half a century and thought I understood how it all works. This video turned on a couple more lights for me and I thank you for it. I have known for quite some time that WE are a product of OUR ENVIRONMENT and I have proven that many times in my life so I know that well. I have been working on changing my environment for many years because I want to change the product (myself). I'll tell you something you already know but it takes time and it is a great journey. Every time a new light turns on it just blows my mind. I find it so hard to believe it took so long for me to understand. Once you get it, you get it and it's soooooooooo simple. Getting past all those years of brain washing is difficult but not impossible. Thank you again Bob, you are a fantastic voice for FREEDOM! Hope to meet you all at the RTR this year (finally)! Have a great day!

Thank you Bob for this video! I am the black sheep of my family for many reasons. I have always enjoyed buying second hand or receiving any hand-me downs. I'm happiest when I can reuse an item that others would find out of style. I feel consumerism is out of control. I don't need the newest and greatest. I have a wonderful job and love what I do but one day I would like to live a more simple life. I did not have a good childhood so I do have a few fears. you are right Bob, nobody has a right to judge you for living in a van, I have lived in a 19.5 foot camper for 13 years and I love it, it has everything anyone needs and really a lot more, as long as you don't go to bed starving, are warm and dry, have a roof over your head even if it is a tent, what else does anybody need, me and you have it made compared to the starving millions of people who live in mud huts, I can't believe most Americans are so judgemental, have a great day I look forward to meeting you some time in am saving up for another van to tow my camper, I think I will get a Chevy 1 ton van like yours, keep on trucking

Bob, you might not be a Christian, but that was one of the best sermons I've ever heard.
And yes (as a Christian) I can say that Christmas has changed over the past 50 years that makes me very sad... Christ has been taken out of Christ - mas. Even the name CHRISTMAS is being removed by corporations and Godless, unhappy people. "Products" have taken the place of the spirit of Christmas.

Bob, so many of your words ring true for me, actually for all of my life. But like everyone else I've tried to do "what society says is acceptable" and have I been happy? Not really, not satisfied, not content . I am on a path now of getting free of spending and using resources as a way to make me "feel happy" and the road has been rough financially and I am stepping towards freeing myself of those financial burdens. You sharing from your heart has sparked that sense of hope and moving away from all of those expectations of how one should live. I've been watching and enjoying and feeling the "Gypsy Heart" awaken within. My Grandmother had a Gypsy Heart and I know it is part of my being too. Thank you so very much for the wonderful videos. I look forward to someday being able to meet you and be part of the RTR in the future. I'm planning to pay off my SUV and have thought often even before seeing your videos about using it for camping and how I can make a bed and store stuff! Funny how things show up at the right time in your life. Smiling!!!!

You are a breath of fresh air Bob. You say the exact things I need to hear at this point in time in my life that's filled with fear of not doing what society expects. Thank you. You encourage me so much. I know you said you're not a Christian and I am one but you live as simply as I personally think Christians should live because the excess makes me unhappy also.

💗Thank you Bob. I know this video is 3 years old ... but I just found it. Man what a message. You're so right.
I'm always depressed at Christmas time, cuz I always feel that my fragile body has not done enough. Things aren't "perfect".
I was raised to be a perfectionist ... and it has ALWAYS left me sad & depressed cuz nothing is ever perfect & "just right". It doesn't help when your loved ones tell you you can't possibly "do that". So, I've been second best. That's soul crushing!
I was always happy when we were camping. Using cool stuff to meet your basic needs such as preparing food and sleeping in a tent. Looking at the amazing stars. Hanging out with people ... cuz there's TIME to do that! Camping by a rushing river with gorgeous rocks. Just awe inspiring!
I've fallen victim, as most do ... to wanting stuff. There are "things" that bring me joy everytime I see them or use them ... and I feel so grateful and happy to be fortunate enough to have them. And saddened when they wear out.
I WANT to run away from society. From the neighbors that could care less about me. The commercialism.
I really think I could do it! Find my tribe of like minded individuals that find happiness in spending an evening around a gorgeous fire ... just talking and sharing. I could fall in love with that life. Cuz the current life of consumerism is soooo depressing! And you DO become a slave to it!
Thank you for your message. For being a pioneer into this new way of living happy with what you've got because there's always a great adventure coming around the corner! A field of WILDFLOWERS! How utterly AMAZING and should fulfilling that would be!
    Quality life.
    Not quantity of "stuff" life.
I will count myself lucky if and when I ever get to sit around a campfire with you!
Thank you for being "you" Bob. You are so appreciated and loved by many for the amazing ways you change people's lives for the better. Setting us FREE ...one by one.💗

No apologies needed. Loved watching this. Walking outside the lines of "normal" makes society nervous. Sometimes I wonder if they look at the nomad life and realize these people are happy and for the most part have chosen this life and it scares them. Some people live in their boxes and are happy, more power to them if so. A lot of people are not but will not break the "rules" to try something different. Thank you for 2016 and your videos. See you at the RTR 2017 in January. Looking forward to seeing & meeting the tribe.

I absolutely love this video! Especially when Bob emphasizes that we have to pay for the house that the toilet is in! "Break the rules!" My Grandsons live 2 hours away in a BIG modern house! When they spent the night in "CraZyGraNnies" tent, got to dig their own poop holes and pee wherever(away from the cactus!), they didn't want to leave. They loved my lifestyle. "Be childlike".

As an agorist, voluntaryist (anarchist), you speak directly to my own thoughts and convictions. I grew up "out-country" and never did buy into the materialism of Murikka, but tried to live the lie for years in order to be a "good husband" and father. It never did stick nor have I ever really "fit in", and every step I take closer to my roots and true self, the more content, satisfied, and happy I am becoming!

I had 4 Ferrari's, Multiple custom motorcycles. Golf course homes etc LESS IS MORE ! Our culture is all about the MORE< >BIGGER< >BETTER syndrome and loop !!!! Most people are in a hypnotic trance! The buy, eat and repeat cycle ! ! ! Searching for the ultimate 'gotta have' purchase ! Instead of looking inside. Usually the last place humans in general look for what they really need !! !!! Yes... Happiness is a choice we make every day when we wake up. The only thing that makes me sad is to see such a spectacular species living such ordinary lives. Thanks for the moment to ponder.
Just a foot note; When I use a public toilet I always take a bottle of cleaner in there and clean it. Now I know that may seem weird but I look at it like this. I use their bathroom so I kinda owe them a service. I am also a little bit of a clean freak and want to know the bathroom it's clean. I also feel that it will be a nicer experience for the next people who use it and may save someone else from otherwise being exposed to germs. I often think how nice it would be to go into a public bathroom after someone like me but haven't yet had that experience :)

christians are leaving traditions after finding out their pagan roots. you're right, it's all about expectatations...it's harder when you have kids or a large family. But unrealistic expectations have been high because of TV Land too. The older I get the more I am enjoying minimalism.

I found out the 'Truth Of The Gospel' 4 years ago and walked away from the traditions of men and the cultural pagan belief system we are taught. Christmas is not Jesus's birthday for starts, he was more likely born during the fall time, likely during The Feast of Tabernacle's (Sukkot) due to the shephard boy grazing sheep, well December would be in winter and would not be grazing anything in dead of winter, it's amazing to me I didn't figure that out till I was in my 50's..lol. Oh well I know now. So Bob is exactly on point here. Christmas is a burden as well. Buy.. Buy... Buy.. Excellent video, We are planning our escape to the Cheaprvliving, Bob you are right on target here.

Paul states I have found to be content in what ever state I'm in. contentment is not a societal norm . that's why each year black Friday and the #1 gift of the year get more and more outrageous . take away all that and live content and things loose there power. to many things become gods for many coasting us time money efforts and happiness. trying to protect stuff that decay and rot and are temporary emotional fixes leaving us empty expecting more.
