Hello Bob I am a 77 yr. old retired Police officer and retired truck driver who just lost his best friend of almost 49 years. Now I need to go some where to cry and heal and I am in the process of celling almost everything I own and taking your advice to buy a cargo trailer and build it out. Then I am going to join your big family and find my self. I hope to make it to the R T. R next year and finish my build the help of your great community. I hope to meet you next year and we can talk more, thank you for the inspiration to do something I should have done while she was still alive for this was her wish also. Thank you again my friend, I truly hope you will be when we meet. Pat

Hey Roy. I'm inspired by your strength and courage. I'm also on a spiritual journey to find myself due to losing the people important to me and other issues. I'm determined to make it to RTR next year. We can dedicate the adventure to all the people we've loved and are no longer with us. In the meantime, I'm really looking forward to alone time in nature, so I can cry and grieve without people telling me to buck up. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need someone to chat with or just want some encouragement to keep going. We can do this. Maybe I will see you at the virtual caravan tonight.

Sounds wonderful. If u don't hv a full time job, u don't hv money to buy them expensive van. Then if u hv no job, u don't hv Money to maintain ur vehicle. Ya, u can dream n live like Gentle Bob for sure, if u hv a retirement pay cheque every mo. to pay ur bill. If u r young n no money, u go to work for many yrs n save up some dough n buy a dream van n go camping every weekend or every yr somewhere warm.

Of course young people can do it. You need the capital to buy the van that's true. But then the maintenance of the van and your lifestyle are cheap.
You can work a job where you set your own hours. Work as little as you want. Just enough to get by on and a bit extra for savings

Also, people say it’s dangerous in the wilderness. Back as a teen, I was chased by a black bear in Minnesota in the twilight hours. Black bears are predatory. Period. I had a stout hiking stick. This was a stout stick. A short chase found my self on the opposite side of a wide pine. Bear went left, smacked with the stick. Bear went right, smacked with the stick. Three more times I swung that stick like I was chopping down a tree. Bear ran away looking for something easier. I slid down the tree to my haunches listening to the bear make his way in the distance. I looked down, realized I peed myself. I’m still alive. I had many adventures after that. I tell this story to say the following; I would rather face what the wilderness has to throw my way, than to face what is in the streets today. Peace to all and well being. Thank you for your consideration.

Bob, this was an excellent presentation and confirms my reasons for wanting to live the remainder of my life in a van. I'm 74 and presently providing caregiving to someone I love. I will be joining the ranks of van dwellers afterwards. I've been a nomadic spirit since I was born into a military family living around the world, serving 23 years myself with 16 of them overseas, and multiple jobs here on the mainland and in Hawaii...traveling around the Pacific while working and living in Maui. I loved my life, my spouses, my children and worked to keep all of us happy. Now it's time for "me time" and that entails traveling throughout the lower 48, Canada and Alaska. I recently purchased a '19 GMC Savana 2500 cargo van and it was bone empty except for wood slats on the cargo space walls and the metal divider, separating the cargo space from the cab. I've been having so much fun converting it to a camper and eventually my home on wheels. Your channel has helped me tremendously with ideas and plans for the future as far as improvements to make my quality of life better. I hope to meet you someday on the road as you've become an idol in the van dwelling community.

@@notanomad9320 Everyone’s life journey is different. The nomad life is not for everyone. What Bob was talking about was the rat race, how so many people in this society get caught up in it and how crushing it can be to people’s physical, mental and spiritual health. I believe it’s one of the reasons why so many people suffer from depression, they don’t see any way out of the vicious cycle and it drags them down. It’s a byproduct of living in an artificial world that is so unnatural. That’s why the nomad life to many offers them a way out. Bob wasn’t putting down work in general, just pointing out that to many folks, working in a job that doesn’t fulfill you (like yours did), just to pay the mortgage/rent and bills that keep going higher and higher, and falling into the trap of buying stuff on credit that puts you into debt is what needs to stop. The ‘work-eat-sleep’-get up and do it again’ syndrome. For many, the way to stop that awful cycle is to become a nomad. For some, they don’t need to be a 100% nomad, they can choose part-time nomad. But it’s knowing that if you want to, you can be free to choose the lifestyle, if you think it’s for you and be happy about it. And the point made about having enough people working to support government programs and property taxes, there will always be a large segment of the population who own homes and live in neighborhoods, mostly families, as long as they can afford to live in them and pay those property taxes. Not everyone is going to jump in a van and wave goodbye to go live out on the road. To each his own.

I'm retired, with a comfortable income, a nice house with solar panels, a nice net worth and no debt. The reason we are in this position, is because we spent a good portion of our 48 (almost 49) years together, living beneath our means. My wife has chosen to keep working. I told her in retirement, I wanted us to get a small RV or small trailer that I could pull behind my small pickup, so we could travel to visit family and friends we have scattered around the US and Canada. My wife said, "Have fun, see you when you get back." Then covid hit, which put things off. I'm now looking for something that will work for me alone. Maybe, I'll see you on the road. God bless.

No we're not experiencing hyperinflation or even much inflation at all. We've spent the last 15 years trying to avoid deflation (don't want to be in Japan's situation) and now we're just beginning to get inflation back up to where we want it. Some prices, i.e. lumber, are going up, and volatile items like food and gasoline aren't included in inflation calculations, but overall inflation hasn't yet reached the Fed's target of 1.5-2.5% range. When it does they will begin to raise interest rates again and damp it down. Basic economics.

I completely agree with your reasons on why people become a nomad; especially spiritual healing and grief. I always wanted to sell my condo, quit my job, buy an suv and live out if it, travel around the US and see what is really out there! Well, I am finally going to do it but it is going to take a few months to get everything ready. The reason I am doing it now is because my father passed away two weeks ago and my significant other passed away, unexpectedly, two days after my father. I have had two significant losses in one week and I need a mental break. This is something I’ve always wanted to do and life is too short not to do what you want to do, if possible. I have decided to ,basically ,start a new life. I think by traveling and getting out of the general area where all of my memories are from these two people will help with the grief and will help me grow spiritually and emotionally. thank you for your video,

Just a few GEMS from this minimalist's absolute favorite film, Fight Club:
"The things you own end up owning you."
"An entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy sh*t we don’t need… We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off."
"It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything."
"You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. You’re not the car you drive. You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your f'ing khakis. You’re the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world."
"Reject the basic assumptions of civilization-especially the importance of material possessions."
"The liberator who destroyed my property has realigned my perceptions."
"We are consumers. We’re the byproducts of a lifestyle obsession."
"If you are reading this, then this warning is for you: Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don’t you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can’t think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you’re supposed to read? Do you think everything you’re supposed to think? Buy what you’re told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity, you will become a statistic. You have been warned."
"This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at a time."

The ocean, the desert, the sand dunes, the mountains, the Colorado River, summer vacations in the beautiful states of Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Colorado. Mostly, Jackson/Yellowstone areas. We camped, we fished, went skiing, boating, floating, hiking, exploring and being IN and WITH nature!!!! They are the BEST times and the BEST memories of my life. Always struggling to make ends meet and stay afloat. Anyway, long story short.... oh how I wish I could meet you someday. I agree with everything you said 💯. I yearn for more than what this lifestyle brings and I want to be a NOMAND. My husband and I both want that life. We want freedom, connection to nature and community. You are AMAZING!!!! Thank you.

EXCELLENT!!!!! I'm studying the nomadic world and I hope in a year to be living it!! As I work full time. I'm 53 so I need to work. Me and my four legged companion. ✌❤🇺🇸 Off of the endless treadmill of more better best. Sick of it. Meaningful relationships! Healing! Enjoying a simpler life !!!

As an overseas viewer, this is sort of an alternative American Dream. Can't see it working elsewhere unless you live in a huge continent.

If it is a city, how would one do that ? you have to pay for parking or cars are restricted entirely, do other countries have "national parks"? How would other countries be about stealth camping ? Can you imagine driving a 30 foot camper on the way to the Almalfi coast ?? no, me neither....

We just bought our first van and are watching videos to help us "kit it out." My dad (Mom is dead) told us that if that's what we want, to grab it with both hands! My MIL told us we were nuts to sell our sticks 'n bricks to go be homeless. Glad Dad was on our side! (We're ignoring MIL, by the way.)

Thank you, Bob. Well said. I am sole caregiver for my ailing husband. When all is said and done, this will be my life if my own health holds.

I don't think you have to be a nomad to live life with these principles. It's also a very common way of life for people who have a minimalism approach but still have a home. I appreciate the video and your take on things! 💕

I agree. While the nomadic life is not for me, I appreciate many aspects of it and have learned a lot from Bob's videos.

@@nrose7345 Agreed! I enjoy watching his journey, I just think it's important to know that people can also practice many of his methods even if they have a home! Buy less crap, find economic freedom, etc. 🥰. It gives us so many more possibilities for the future.

I have found peace living in the country. I don’t hear a lot of noise. I wake up to birds and wildlife. I grow much of my own food. If I want to see people, I leave my quiet home. I have very few bills. I travel in my RV when I feel like traveling. I don’t want to travel full time. I think I have the best of both worlds.

@@nfoss5656 I agree, we live a similar lifestyle! It's quiet and we are so thankful to be in our scenario during this past crazy year. We started to n travel Jan.of this year and we have found amazing and quiet place on the road too. Cheers to a quieter way of life!! 💕

I am stuck at the moment and haven’t been able to do anything just because I can’t build a floor on my Kia soul. People just tells me don’t build anything just sleep in it but the car is small so I am already going in to frustration. That is not a way to start the purpose of enjoying it is to be comfortable therefore i need to take the sits out and build a floor. You will be amazed of the space that the Kia soul has without the seats
