- Dark Souls 3 Lore - High Lord Wolnir
Continuing the Dark Souls 3 Lore discussion, we come to High Lore Wolnir! While there isn't too much lore on Wolnir specifically, I thought it would be fun to take a look at both Wolnir and Carthus, and see what we could find. There were also some possible Dark Souls 2 connections that I wanted to point out.

Hope you enjoy my Dark Souls 3: High Lord Wolnir Lore video! - Ігри
He became a high lord after consuming some green blossoms everyday.
What else could explain the smoke that pours from his mouth?
Ha! Puns
Let’s just say he’s importing a lot of moon grass from Boletaria…
Almighty vape lord wolnir
And abyss vapes
From Software are aware of how much the fan base have a love/hate for spoopy skeletons, and decided to shove in the largest skeleton the player would be physically capable of fighting in the third and final installment of their trilogy as fan service. Wolnir is the the physical embodiment of He whom we're supposed to thank so He can grant us strong bones and calcium.
*High Lord Wolnir is Mr. Skeltal*
+Walter Sullivan
The true most skeletal build possible.
tank you skeltal.
Doot Doot 📣💀
DS3 isn't the last dark souls game...is it?...
Grantastic I'm afraid that's already been confirmed. It may not be the last Dark Souls-styled game, but the Dark Souls universe is pretty much finished with this installment, according to the director.
I love how Wolnir's depicted as the biggest arse ever, so players think "There's no way anyone else can be worse."
Then you immediately reach Irithyll and realise the extent of Sully and Al's crimes.
Lol, the abyss watchers buried the kingdom of carthas because it showed the abyss
If Wolnir fell to the Abyss, it's not because he yearned for their power, but because he tried to challenge Sulyvahn and Aldrich (see the war machine that targets the Boreal Valley in the lake under the Catacombs of Carthus), who spread the Abyss everywhere. It's the same thing that happened to Yhorm, as the warriors of Carthus, he has the red eyes.
You Can kill wolnir without destroying the bracelets, it plays a completly different death animation that looks like we freed him from the abyss
damn you miyasaki, you did it again
Foolish Unkindled, there is no way to defeat my Stand, Justice! With it, the dead are mine to control, and with your death, I will control you!
+bait4sale9001 I got that bizarre reference :-)
+bait4sale9001 Cracked me up, thanks!
Oh my god... You're right!
I didn't even realize it before, but Wolnir looks almost identical to Enyaba's stand...
Thank you so much for this comment. I fucking love JoJo
I wanna visit Carthus. DLC confirmed.
same here
nope
The Abyss Watcher' s primary objective was to snuff out and eradicate the dark. That's why you fight them at the entrance of catacombs. It's safe to assume that the undead legion laid siege to Wolly's kingdom because of his dabbling of dark magic and the strong presence of the abyss within his kingdom. I'll also say that the legion underestimated how deeply rooted the abyss was in that kingdom and they themselves became tainted in it, that's why you find them cutting each other down at the beginning of the boss fight. If you look at their armor you can see traces of rot but I'm contrast you don't see any rot on that deserters armor in firelink. The events of the legion and Wollys demise happened at the same time not after one another.
Have you ever tried chasing Wolnir during his death animation? I've done it twice and each time there's a little skeleton that spawns around the same point that he vanishes from, any idea if this was intentional or not?
That's pretty interesting!
+VegaArchAngel That is so awesome, i had no idea. have to try it myself now!
+VegaArchAngel He was probably summoning skeletons and i manage to chase Wolnir's death toward the start of the room (which there's a wall and nothing else, i expected a cliff)
+VegaArchAngel As tested in a video by Limit Breakers. Wolnir simply vanishes before you can get far. Adding to that is when you reach the deepest point of the level only to find nothing but a wall.
Yeah, I saw that the other night, though when he chased him down he did it with a speed multiplier, as it was said earlier in this thread where the little guy spawns from seems to be where Wolnir first starts attacking you from.
"...used as a signal for war, and war they did!"
I don't know why, but that made me chuckle. I just imagine two generals saying "We shall war today, sir!"
You forgot some links to the Iron Keep. In Dark Souls 3 we're told through the description of the weapon "Black Blade" (which is the same weapon as "Berserker Blade" from Dark Souls 2) that it was in possesion of a guest to Wolnir (iirc) which parallels the description it had in Dark Souls 2 wherein it was used by a guest to the Old Iron King. The parallels between the Old Iron King are very strong with how they both came to power then fell down because of their pride. Furthermore, the Pyromancer in Dark Souls 3 kinda parallels Eygil from Dark Souls 2. One of the important pyromancies that Eygil created was Fire Snake whose dark version we find in Dark Souls 3 as you discussed in the video. I don't know much about how this all ties in within the story but the case for the land to be Jugo definitely seems likely.
+First Name Last Name I think there is a very large sand kingdom, and Jugo was just one of a few lands that Wolnir conquered, though maybe not all were originally deserts. The anthills described lining Jugo could have very well cast a rain shadow effect, (making clouds rain on, but not past high objects), and the anthills might be the mountains behind Irythill of the Boreal Valley. This could explain why there is an exit into Irythill from Carthus, for foreign negotiations and trade. Carthus itself would be behind the mountains, and the area in the game is one underground tunnel.
RayzeTheDragon To me personally, I don't necessarily think that Carthus exists above the Catacombs. The them of converging lands is at play here wherein we only get to see the Catacombs of Carthus got pulled from its time and converged with Lothric while the rest of the kingdom stays out of our reach. It's possible that Carthus is completely destroyed by now for all we know. I'm aware of the phenomenon of rain shadows as I've studied it (or at least an introduction to it that can hardly be of any practical use) back in middle school and you raise a good point about it, it could explain thw reason why Irithyll and Anor Londo are obsecured from everywhere else by the lard clouds covering the area. Still I wonder what the path that extends from the bridge to Irithyll leads to, it's closed by collapsed rocks and could be part of the whole "converging lands" thing wherein Irithyll was pulled out of its time and the bridge was left leading to nowhere. At any case, there doesn't seem to be any recent history between Irithyll and Carthus. It seems as though the history of the two locations took place seperately at different ages that were long past and currently the interactions between the two locations were kept at minimum because they only became near one another after the lands converged. What's important to note however, is that the rise of Sulyvahn to power and the events surrounding him and Aldritch, and how Aldritch consumed Gwyndolin, all seems to have taken place in recent history after the lands converged, hence Anor Londo must've existed at the same age as the Cathedral of the Deep for such a thing to happen.
First Name Last Name I think there is a sandy place above the catacombs, maybe it's disused, or maybe a few things still exist there, and maybe the path to Irithyll was use for invasion, or espionage?
RayzeTheDragon If so, then a DL might give us access to that place in a variety of possible ways. For example,,we might get the Ashen Mist Heart allowing us to go to the past and go through the destroyed path that extends from Irithyll's bridge. We might also get to see the staircase leading down to Irithyll dungeon repaired to lead us down to the rest of the Profaned Capital or something like that. Oh well, we can only wait. I heard there's rumours that the DLC will be released in August.
What if Wolnir is our character from dark souls 2?
i can say that my first ds2 character is definitely wolnir seeing how he started with a bastard sword and became the most meta character by the end.
guess you either you die as a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
the people of carthus sound just like people that use ccs valuing victory over all else
On a more serious note, I noticed you pronounce his name WOL-nur. I personally thought it was meant to be pronounced the same way Norse names normally are. Hodir = Ho-DEER, Wolnir = Wol-NEER.
Pretty nice compilation and presentation of lore segments, by the way. Great work.
+Walter Sullivan Since no in-game characters say it, I kinda just went with my judgement.
That said, I checked the Japanese Katakana, and it's "Warruniiru", so I guess it'd be Wal-neer.
Glad you enjoyed, anyways! Thanks!
I didn't know leafy had a lore Channel
Damn, thats brutal.
c:
Hisss
as savage as this is...i cant really disagree lol
This may sound weird but your voice is actually quite soothing. It's part of the reason why your videos are so engaging
"what should we do with the most important plot device of DS2?" "huh? what? uhhh, just put it on some random skeleton dude, nobody even remembers that stuff anyway" "brilliant, Mr Miyazaki"
no seriously, the United Crown is either still in the hands of the Bearer of the Curse or was never formed. it's speciifically stated that Wolnir took the crowns of the lands he conquered and he what conquered was all of _Carthus_. unless Eleum Loyce, Brume Tower, Shulva and Drangleic are now somehow located in Carthus, Wolnir didn't take these crowns. destroying the crowns and making a new one out of them is nothing more than Wolnir showing off how little he respects the lords he defeated- conquerors in real life often did similar things.
+Mr Elbows I always thought the Firekeeper held one of these crowns given from its appearance in the CGI trailer.
It's rumoured that Eleum Loyce is located on the ruins of the Profaned Capital.
@@VexJinks I always thought Things betwixt/Majula was the Profaned Capital due to
Laddersmith gillian's corpse.
I realize this is a very old comment, but I thought I'd give my two cents. It's my impression that the crowns Wolnir destroyed aren't literally the same crowns from Dark Souls 2. Rather, he lived at a different time, conquering other kings - however, due to the cyclical nature of history, these kings naturally harken back to the kings from DS2.
Am I a weird person for using a more Germanic pronunciation of Wolnir, with the 'W' actually sounding like a 'V'? I always thought his name would sound more like 'Volneer'.
Völnir for me. I'm Icelandic.
I do that too man 👍👍👍
Hell yeah dude, you're videos of the lore are really the best at the moment!
+Yorio Thanks so much! :)
great video, im glad to get some lore videos. keep up the good work!
can you do a lore video about the little crab that was inside the second rolling ball of skeletons? was he taken hostage? did the crab desert its crab brethren to join the carthus warriors? i just dont know anymore...
He vapes
+Rock Huerta Wolnir is 100% \//\
Awesome video. Can't wait to see what you have to say about Untended Graves and Dark Firelink. Keep up the good work
I'm glad that you found some lore from ds2 in 3 Dave. I was hoping that they wouldn't scrap a lot of lore from 2. Looking forward to the next one!
Wolnir is a good boss with an amazing sound track. I just beat him on my first try!
Good video Dave! I've almost finished my first playthrough, just finished a long session managing to beat the Nameless King and Lorian/Lothric. Hope to see more to come from you.
Can't wait for the next lore vid Dave
YES I have been making bets who you are going to take on next in the series. I was wrong on who you would do next, but I'm not less happy about it
Ive been scouring youtube waiting for your lore vids. Really the best on the tube. I was actually thinking of doing some myself, it just looks like alot of fun. Plus the souls games are my faves....
Given how many people he must've fed to the Abyss, it's poetic justice when you shatter his rings and he falls prey to that darkness himself.
I must say you did a very good job on this , lots of good information also i really like the speculation stuff i find it makes it that much more interesting , Again good shit man keep it going I haven't seen a whole alot if lore type story stuff since ds3 has came out , take care
I'm still pretty sure it's just Triple H. Behold the King of Kings.
Bow down to the, bow down to the king!
nice connection between the abyss watchers guarding the entrance to a man who fell in the abyss , it was obvious as hell but I didn't see it.. nice video btw !
Keep it up man, I love these
i have honestly grown to love the abyss watchers as bosses and some of the coolest swordplay in the game
Chilling. love these vids.
I love your lore videos keep making these !
Awesome vid Dave
loved how you told the story, gained my sub
Immaculate presentation for this boss but the fight was a dud: "hit the glowy bits!"
+David Stubbs Yeah, I really love the way the boss looks, but the fight itself was pretty 'meh'.
+STORM LORD maybe he just went around?
+STORM LORD sure there are. Just go over the wall.
+STORM LORD maybe aldritch awoke before the abyss watchers
I would’ve loved it if instead of entering the abyss and walking right up to an item to start the fight, it was actually more of a mini area in which you traversed down the hill a little more before finding him. This would’ve allowed for more potential moves and couldve been an even better set piece. Imagine fighting wolnir as he slowly traverses up the hill in his escape. Yeah, he has his charge attack where he runs at you, but it wouldve been cooler if the fight was longer and you actually watched him struggle to climb out of the abyss as he simultaneously tries to attack you. Maybe even had it where you reach the bottom of the hill only to come to a drop off and see wolnirs hands reach up and grab the cliffside and pull himself up ala gaping dragon.
Perhaps Farron Keep originally was fort or palace for Wolnir. The location itself had to be important, they wouldn't have built a wall around it if it wasn't.
If we go with the idea that the Farron Wood is what became of Oolacile, then perhaps Wolnir arrived to it during his quest for power, wanting to harness the Abyss by going to where it first sprouted (at least according to record. The events in New Londo seem to have been erased from history).
The Deacons and Evangelists of the Deep clearly use dark magic when battling them. I think the Undead Legion suspected them, and made Farron Keep their base of operations in Lothric because it was so close to the Cathedral.
+vopop30 While this may be true and I certainly agree with it, it is important to remember that space and time are twisting around each other in the events of dark souls 3. It may be true that it just happens to be the location, but considering carthas is considered to be in a desert and in here its underground, then it's also possible that they may not be. I have a funny feeling that this may never be answered and that this is one of those "whats your interpretation" things.
Great video though. The part relating Wolnir's crown to the DLC crown in Dark Souls 2, and Carthus to Jugo was quite mind blowing. Though I doubt that Wolnir is the actual chosen undead we played, he still could have stolen/looted the crown off of us lol.
On a side note: If that's not the case. Then it would be kind of awesome if there was a DLC in Dark Souls 3 where we get to meet, or is somehow involved with the chosen undead from Dark Souls 2.
Lol cool you posted this on my birthday and I've actually be interested in Woldnir's backstory since I like his crown's description and how I've crushed him so now I wear his own crown huahuahua
Awesome videos Dave keep it up 👍
Great video man
Big ups for using those King's Field jams. Represent.
high lord walnut
this made my day
GOOD STUFF DAVE.
Can't tell if the "High Lore Wolnir" typo in the description is on purpose or not lol
Or the High Lorde Warner in the subtitles. XD
great vid! subbed
The Catacombs of carthus is one of my favorite areas in the game and the lore just made it better, good work buddy! Also will you make a Yhorm lore video soon? :))
Loving it so far, nothing obviously missing this time. Nice job my man.
+Sir TheDude97000 Yeah, I did my best to dot my 'i's and cross my 't's this time. Especially since I don't want to have to reupload another lore fix video, :P
+DaveControl Just a sec. Dave, what about Anor Londo? if we assume that Lotric castle is the North, and we are at Anor Londo, that mean that Darkroot Garden is at South West of Anor Londo, not in North West, that if we youse the Dark Souls 1 map
+DaveControl that also mean what is youse as the boss room for the Curse-Rotted Greatwood is in the exact same place of the duke's archives location in Dark Souls 1, think about it
+Gundamboy128 but lothric is not lordran its a place where many kingdoms colide but it dous not have the same map so i dont think that using the ds 1 map is fair
+Gundamboy128 the place is "where the churning homes of the Lord's converge." Churning, implies moving, kind of like water in a pot before it starts to boil. Bubbles do form early on, and rise to the top. Besides, look at how high up lothric is above everything else? You think that was how they originally built this place? Geography in the souls games is ever changing, that doesn't make it any less important, but you can't rely on the directions things happen in being consistent.
great content dude, subbed
The'byss.
It's really grating, isn't it?
+JBarracudaL F**k, that's all I can hear now haha
It will seep into your very soul.
+JBarracudaL Amygdala Poulain :P
+JBarracudaL It really doesn't help that he's talking from one subject to another at a very fast pace and often seem to stop to breathe just after "The'byss".
The most interesting conclusion is the last 6 seconds. But good work Dave.
Very cool video! :)
Loved it!
I hear some Kings Field 4 music in the background. Nice!
The annotation attached to the Chrono Trigger image at the end of the video seems to direct to the Aldrich Lore video.
+jimspina Thanks! Just fixed it. :)
ua-cam.com/video/C7Xzljt_b04/v-deo.html
+DaveControl Great video as always. When can we expect a lore video on Pickle Pee and Pump-a-Rum?
Really fantastic! Never realized that Wolnir could have conquered the Ivory, Iron and Sunken kings before to make his own crown. It's a great theory that's quickly becoming my headcanon!
great job !
you should make a lore video, showing how time has changed the land, and characters from ds1 and ds2 who have either died or changed
Solid speculation, and not too much out there, like most theories tend to be.
I have to say though, it seems like if the High Lord uniting all the crowns is the same action as in Dark Souls 2 and would yield the same effect, i.e immunity to hollowing, it seems to be understated quite a bit. Not to mention, such a powerful boon doesn't seem to protect you from the Abyss, apparently.
+Alexander Hjelm Thanks! I try to base my conjectures as closely to the source as I can. (And try to make it obvious when I am).
I thought about the whole immunity to hollowing thing - but that's also only after Vendrick blessed the crowns. And - if he melted them to make a singular crown, who knows if it would still have that effect.
Interesting! So Wolnir was close to inmortal, we couldnt kill him, but destroying that golden bracelets, we send him definitely to the abyss.
Keep the good job! Interesting to see, and your voice helps a lot
If you kill wolnir without destroying his bracelets, he has a different death animation where he straight up just dies instead of falling into the abyss.
reminds me of our ds2 character.he became immune to hollowing but still was undead.
Wolnir Being our Character from DS2 is a badass theory
I have a theory that is pretty interesting I think.
So with Wolnir's crown probably being the one forged by the 4 crowns in Ds2, I think it should be pointed out that that crown made you inmune to the curse, as to if Wolnir should be consider the Ds2 chosen undead or no it doesn't really matter I feel like, but I think knowing that he was inmune to the curse could explain his interactions with the abyss. Think about him cheating his way through the cycle after Ds2 scholar's crown ending, maybe the abyss was the one that drawed him in as it is the very nature of the world, and not him seeking power from it. Just a thought tho.
+Nitos Unfortunately when we get his crown it doesn't reduce hollowing from Yoel
in ds2 it stops hollowing and doesn't reduce if I remember correctly
The crown has no similarities or special properties from the 4 crowns.
It's just a normal crown, I think Carthus was actually a continent with many kingdoms built on it, Wolnir was the "Carthus conqueror", so he defeated all the lords of all the kingdoms on Carthus, crown their crowns to dust, and forged a new crown from them. Wolnir was not just a king, he was an Emperor.
I'm convinced that this guy is a reference to the Bearer of the Curse, but nothing more.
what amazes me the most is how big wolnir is, he is even bigger than yhorm.
had no clue dark souls 2 was looked at, thought they just did ds1 lore and some minor references, or miyazaki has a thing for pyromancies and deserts
In irithyl you can be invaded by creigton
In irithyl you can be invaded by creigton
Not only can you be invaded twice by Creighton from DaS2, you can also find the Armor from the knight of Mirrah. Don't quite remember the name, but both the armor, the mask and the sword are optainable.
Thank you for making Dark Souls even more bad ass!!!
I have always wondered why is he a giant skeleton in the abyss? If he was a giant before the abyss then the crown makes no sense, but he's a giant after succumbing to the abyss with a now giant crown too? lol he's a massive stand out lore wise. I can't think of any character referenced as much in items. Visually awesome too! Enjoyed the vid.
Hey what's the music that plays when the abyss watchers scene plays at 6:09?
And what about Izalith being the smouldering lake because you can find there so much stuff from izalith?? :(
great vid, next nameless king pls
Thank you for making my shitty day better with this awesome video man! :)
Dude........how did I miss this episode??? I love it. fuck I gota pay attention more
idk if the geography is that closely connected to the lore. There's sort of a theme of the lands of the lords colliding as the flames fadeas we can see in the final level.
you are very good. and more active than Vaati atm, so you have my subscribe! :D
I appreciate that! :)
And, I'm pretty sure he's been hard at work on a killer lore video, so... I have a feeling he'll be dropping that real soon!
can you do lore video of the twin prince and Gertrude?
+WATERSTARS19 agree, i always wanted to know the lore between these two princes
+WATERSTARS19 you mean the incest brothers
Hime Sama That was Nice and ...and Pure ...and ...and Deep BROTHER LOVE!!
...ok, they are incest.
+WATERSTARS19
Regarding the Twin Princes, these are just my thoughts on the matter:
The rulers of Lothric believed that the Linking of the Fire was an honor worthy of only their royal family. As a result, they were obsessed with the production of a pure heir. Lorain was their first child and became a capable warrior and a stalwart knight. However, the kingdom of Lothric, governed by the Way of White, underwent a crisis of faith. When the worship of Angels gained prominence over the Way of White, Lorian converted (as evidenced by the fact that their chamber is filled with feathers, the telltale symbol of the angels, and is surrounded by knights wearing blue with bulwarks facing away from their keep, suggesting that these knights are also converts to the Angelic Faith). Subsequently, Lorian's family considered him unworthy and turned to the next heir, Lothric. To inhibit the shortcomings that afflicted his older brother, Lothric was sequestered away so as to not be exposed to any dissident ideas. From there, his life was dedicated to prayer and meditation to prepare him for the Linking of the Fire. However, he was influenced by his own skeptical tutor, the head scholar of the Grand Archives, and relinquished his duty. From that point, Prince Lothric returned to Lorian and they both decided to flee the kingdom and spitefully bear witness to the impending fading of the First Flame from a distance. However, the twin princes, in fear of those who would capture or slay them for their treason, bound their souls together to increase their power. As a result, Lorian shares in his brother’s physical frailty but has the power to defend him from any intruders.
Note: Upon inspection, Lorian’s hair appears to change from black to white upon resurrection. However, this may be a visual glitch.
+WATERSTARS19
All i have on them is that apparently they have features of the old gods as stated by the Irithyllian face preset in character creation. People with those features are apparently destined to be taken to Irithyll someday, therefore giving us an explanation as to why Pope Suly sent Vordt and The Booty Dancer from the Lo'real Because You're Worth It valley to Lothric Castle.
I don't know about the catacombs being under the Carthus desert thing. Inside the Smoldering Lake there's actually a hole just before the ballista where you can see buildings of Irithyll (pretty confident it's the bridge leading to the dungeon). At the big dam before the Manor entrance, you can also see a hole down there, which matches the hole in the Lake. Essentially Smouldering Lake is located right under Irithyll, like apparently if you shovel for an hour at the swamp under the big bridge, you'd fall through the roof to the caves and plunge attack some giant crabs.
Altho this could all be due to that stuff about lands converging together. These places may have been at the other side of the world before, but are now just stacked ontop of each other nonsensically because the fire fades etc.
maybe in DLC they will do another thing with time travel where we go back in time to when carthus dominated and we get to see its fall
Who do you think would win in a fight? Wolnir or Nito?
Man your making more Lore than Vaati, keep it up!! Woot Wooot
Something interesting. On the Lothric castle, Farron keep side, there is a abyss watchers, secret entrance, with several traps, grave wardens, necromancers, demons, etc before the player can get to Wolnir and the abyss. Whereas on the Irithyll side, there is only a door, one door, and your at Wolnir. Whats up with that Sulyvahn?
Well, you somehow made me feel bad for a giant skeleton wearing jewelry. Good job.
No please make these longer there awesome
Oh.
Hey, I'm actually kind of shocked I didn't catch this at all yet. But one of Wolnir's attacks is literally Dark Fog combined with Whisper of Despair (two hexes from DS2). Maybe that could be considered a hint or nudge towards him existing slightly around DS2's time or the Jugo theory?
Turning in the dark pyromancy tome basically spells out what happened to Wolnir and the dark depths of depravity he found within the human soul.
I'm trying for usurpation of fire ending first. I defeated Wolnir before I defeated the deacons of the deep. will the ending still be possible?
Praise this man, a genius and a devotee.
In support of Dark Souls 2 connection, I would remind you of the Dark Hexers we meet throughout the game, that send us to some sort of Abyss Connected areas. We eventually face down Dark Lurker as well, whatever that was. If we parallel all that to our protagonist, he would grind the crowns, get interest in the Dark Arts and the Abyss from Hexers and eventually settle down in Jugo. Then...then perhaps convoluted time and space sent Jugo to where Oolacile was. I heard similar theory of how Irithyll is in fact Eleum Loyce, wrapped around Anor Londo, with Profaned Flame being Chaos Flame beneath it.
Fanservice or pure genius? Hell if I know.
Those desert sorceress'... I'm gonna need a minute....
don't you touch that cup
*I TOLD YOU NOT TO TOUCH THE GOD DAMN FUCKING CUP.*
Davecontrol spitting more lore vids out than Vati has done since the game was released
I always liked to think that Velka was the god that granted Wolnir's prayer. Fitting for a goddess of punishment to granting the wish of one so afraid of dying by giving him the one thing keeping him safe, but at the same time ensuring he lives alone in the abyss
OKAY I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the relationship between Wolnir and Dark Souls 2
I enjoyed
I think you actually surpassed Vaati, gg!
