Apologies for the awful audio quality. The recent Windows update decided to mess around with my (and your) sound settings for no reason.
Special thanks to Lokey for the following contributions to this script:
-Reminded me of the war use of Carthus Beacon
-Clarified what a "wish" to become "Last of the Dead" means in relation to the JP text
-Clarified that Wolnir "clung" to the power of the gods. He did not Plead, as the English text suggests.
-Suggested that the Clerics were of the Way of White

The warriors of Carthus were feared for their op R1 mashing until their signature sword was nerfed and they were replaced by the warriors of the dark infusion

ymfah Maybe, but that's just a theory, A GAME THEORY
the only reason why I could even believe it is because solaire died to a worm, was stupidly strong and had bitchin lighting powers. whats saying that the worm didnt consume him and because of his power they combined? while its obviously dumb theres something there.

You heard about those warriors from Carthus ? They have curved swords. CURVED. SWORDS.

"The warriors of Carthus were characterized by their lust for victory, this inspired a culture that is focused on combat techniques and the ablitiy to achieve victory through any means necessary..." So the status and reputation of the CCS as a tryhard weapon is actually backed up by ingame lore? That somehow does not surprise me at all... I wonder why?
Ratel Vora when Lore and Meta-Lore merge
I read the quote as played lol
I know I'm literally years late with this but it does make me sad because I am for sure not a tryhard by any means, but I love curved swords in DS3 and I really love how the Carthus Curved Sword looks, so I use it all the time... Too bad that reputation goes with it, as that is not the reputation I want.
@@Data-AnalystSera who cares what a bunch of nerds think? And I say that as a proud nerd and DS scrub. Enjoy the game and the swords. Bleed is really good against certain enemies so that's exactly what I used to take down the demon princes! 🤓
Ps: try hard isn't really an insult. At least not in a freaking DS game with no chill that literally brags about how much its gonna kill you as a selling point. You have to be trying hard. It's only an insult to casual gamers who sweat over tetris or something.

so, I kinda have a theory about the kingdom of Carthus. People always asume that they were humans before and it was when the undead legion attacked them that they died...but the thing is...what if they never had any flesh to begin with? what if they were always skeletons?
as far as I remember from Dark Souls 1, the Dead are a proper race that apeared thanks to the soul of Nito, just as the gods apeared from Gwyn, humans from the furtive pygmi and demons from the witch of izalith. and during dark souls 3 we see the remnants of each of these races, except from the Dead. well, maybe the kingdom of Carthus is the remnants of that race
after all, it kinda makes sense. they valued victory above all else, so is natural they based their weapons in bleed, not only to cause more damage to their enemies, but to make sure their own weapons couldn't be used against them, since skeletons can't bleed. and the skeletons in the catacombs don't seem like brainless resurected corpses, even the most basic skeleton can end up parrying you, wich is something that requires some actual thought, unlike the undead enemies flailing their swords around.
This should be pinned
But the Carthus Warrior skeletons are vulnerable to bleed Weapons. Especially the ones near that giant crossbow above Smouldering lake.
I might be mixing some things up but does that mean Wolnir was always a giant skeleton?
@@SorowFame I guess so
If he was a giant in life wouldn't he have the giant hole in his face? Or was that something only same giants had
Bastion Unit B73 I think there a distinction between giants like Yhorm, who’s essentially just a giant human, and the Dark Souls 2 tree-like giants. It’s also possible that Wolnir consumed ungodly amounts of calcium.
A carthus warrior is a guy who would take 2 minutes to buff and lag backstab you with a hornet ring
Don't forget the point down.
lol
and the pkcs
Fun fact: the kukri in real life was never meant for throwing. It's a large knife with a forward-bent blade that originated from Nepal and was used as both a weapon and a tool.
To be fair, I'm sure a lot of knives aren't meant for throwing, but people learned how to use them that way until ones specifically made to be thrown were developed.
Rukifellth People probably thought that throwing the knife was too cool to pass on, since ancient times. Doing things for the awesome factor above all is something humans as a whole have been doing since forever, it seems lol
Rukifellth
I don't think that the shape of a kukri would allow it to be thrown with any sort of effectiveness
Yep, it wouldn't. It's much more effective to throw a simple rock than to throw a kukri.
Epicmonk117 true IRL Kukri are sometimes used to decapitate goats. You would not throw those things.
This makes the fight with Wjolnir much cooler. You aren't just attacking glowing weak spots, but his only defence against the Abyss. With his bracelets destroyed, nothing is preventing him from being consumed by the abyss, and he gets swallowed by it. There's no way to beat him conventionally, the lore makes him out to be an all powerful all conquering warrior. Only be removing his source of protection can you best him.
Valrald Well, there is a way to beat him conventionally, but it takes forever, and isn’t worth it. Just hit any part of his body that isn’t his hands or bracelet, and it’ll do damage.
And Pestilent Mist works as well.
Zephyrical Shit man, you knew what I meant XD
Valrald i thought that was the case, i mean, when you break the bracelets he doesn't desintegrate like the other bosses, he is clearly dragged by the abyss.
This is helpful to understand. When i played the game all I did was roll around and swing my twinblades until the game was over. I have no idea what the game was bout. I can see it’s good for a certain kind of person but I’m more into far cry nonsense type games
You're not actually besting him too. He is already in 5he brink of destruction anyway

Dude, I have so much respect for you man. You have great video production and cinematography skills. You write really well and have the perfect voice for your narration. The way you package this universe into a format that is deeply interesting, accessible, and easily digestible, just really brings these worlds to life even beyond what FROM has accomplished in the games. You create the perfect companion pieces that both expand on the foundations, as well as breathe new life into the series. Whenever I feel burnt out on my countless time spent playing and replaying these games year after year, I can put one of your videos on, and it will inspire me to jump back in and experience everything again. You are truly a modern day storyteller, using a new medium to pass on legends. I really hope we get some good news at E3, because I'd love to see your content continue to flow. Thanks man, keep doin what you''re doin.
Kevin Birmingham Aww thats cute
What a comment
Vaati - bringing you calm, soothing and contemplative content since 2012.
Honestly can't think of a better way to start a Saturday morning than with a new Vaati lord video.
If you ever read this Vaati, the level of research and the way you assemble such small bits of information into a cohesive literary narrative for every video you make is truly an incredible gift and has always astounded me. Thank you for all that you've invested into bringing these games to life in such a unique and profound way and I will always look forward to new content from you on any topic.
Thank you!
We'll TAKE CARTHUS
And PUSH IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!
Literally.
-Tectonic Plates
I guess technically a swamp could be formed out of a desert, it’d just take some time
It blows my mind how much story can be told with just a few simple details. The way they use enemy design, world design, and even such simple concepts as colors or similar shapes, to tell an intriguing story. It is intuitive, yet difficult to piece together. Always there if you want to discover some lore, but it never holds the gameplay back if you don't care about the story.
And, well, when Vaati compiles these little details into one video explaining backstory of a particular character or area, it all suddenly clicks, as he has a great ability to express these loose ideas in a narrative form, and I appreciate the game even more.
Thank you for your work.

Carthus is basically Dark Souls' version of the Kushan Empire from Berserk.
Tyrant hmmm🤔
or just an old arabian-styled empire...
Tyrant What i was thinking, from the fashion to their fighting styles.
Nightksa1995 maybe Persian
Yes, because everything is from Berserk. 😒
So basically, Abyss Watchers couldn't figure out to attack the big glowing obvious weak points.
The bracelets are only weak points when Wolnir is in the Abyss. When he was alive and mortal they were not weak points. Watchers were tainted by the Abyss some time after Wolnir was taken by the Abyss, so they never actually met in combat. Watchers only went to the Catacombs of Carthus after the Grave Wardens developed dark pyromancies which was after Wolnir was swallowed by the Abyss. Still funny and left a like though.
@@jacobhoover1654 I don't get it. If the Abyss Watchers only went to the catacombs after Wolnir was already swallowed by the Abyss, the bracelets would already be weak points, wouldn't they?
@@greenhatzelda8273 yes
Now the real question Is: how tf do they manage to damage you by rolling do they just roll really hard?
Do undead lack the calcium?
I always had the impression that Wolnir's distinguished guest was one of the 3 sisters of the Sable Church of Londor. Perhaps how he learned Black Serpent and ultimately led to his fall to the dark.
*_"You must learn how to ride the Sandworms, Mua'Dib!"_*
*Usul has summoned a big one, again, it is the Legend*
You should do a more elaborate video on the lore of what happened to the demon ruins, how the demon genocide went down, how Chaos started to leak into Ash Lake. Why tf theres crabs down there. You know, that kind of stuff.
Demons are dying out bc Prince Lorian defeated the Demon Prince (soul of demon Prince item description). Solaire tunneling into Ash lake turned it into the Smoldering Lake. There is nothing in-game about what happened to the dragon from the DS1 covenant that use to be there so its not possible to make a legitimate video about it's fate.
I don't even play Dark Souls, never have and probably never will, but the quality and effort you put into these videos is simply amazing. I've never been so fascinated with lore. Thank you for posting these.

0:33 lmfao solaire=sandworm confirmed
@VaatiVidya your voice is honestly the perfect voice for telling these stories. Fits the tone perfectly and makes for great shit to listen to when trying to relax
You said you were going to talk about the worm later in the video, but you never did :x
The art and the music in the beginning of the video makes me wish FromSoftware actually created a post apocalyptic Carthus. A vast dune of sand stretching miles. In the background is Lothric and Irithyll while the actual gameplay takes place in some ruined Carthus city made of sandstone, half consumed by the sand yet it’s warriors still wander the city streets. Hollowed or skeletoned, still able to use their aggressive spells and deadly fast combat techniques. I say I wish this was possible because after about say.. 500+ hours of playing this game online, offline, and it’s DLC’s with multiple builds.. it begins to feel small. Much smaller than the other two.
Damn it all, Vaati. I was supposed to be studying today, not binge watching your videos...again 🍻
Nooooooooooooooo!!!
That last part really broke me, Vaati. I wouldn't be into Dark Souls as much as I am without your videos :c I hope that E3 brings something worth clining this channel to. Or that Code Vein isn't completely scripted.

Easily one of your best vids in my mind, god damn. Just wanted to drop a like and say thanks for making some of my favorite games even better.
Video Idea: Using as many clues as can be gleaned from all of the souls games, construct a world map as it might have looked before the convergence, ie; where is Mirrah in relation to Carthus, in relation to Lothric Castle etc.

Could you maybe do one more video about the Abyss watchers to wrap up everything weve learned about the undead legion? I also read about this theory that the abyss watchers basically Carry shards of artorias' soul within them like the four kings did with gwynns soulWhich is Why we Can transmute is sword from the soul of the blood of the wolf. How did they get his soul though? So I have a few theories about that. Either artorias founded the abyss watchers And gave the watchers themselves pieces of his soul. In Some cut dialogue you hear Artorias say that there surely is more to humans/undead than the dark indicating that he didnt hate humans Like Some others.so maybe he even founded the legion himself to give these undead a purpose And spread out shards of his soul among the abyss watchers. We do Get the option to give artorias' soul to ciaran in ds1 so maybe After artorias' death she gave the watchers the shards of his soul. Maybe she even founded the abyss watchers herself in his memory or because she thought it was necessary. We know that she didnt like humans though. However you could see this as more of a Reason for her to have founded the legion And abyss watchers because she didnt care about humans anyway. For anyone Reading this if I made any mistakes please correct me And VaatiVidya if you read this, I love your content so much And I would love a video about this theory!!
Ok, now that I've seen the video, gotta say, nice one, Vaati! Never really cared too much about this civilization in particular, but you've clearly done great job putting together everything there is about them, and that clarification over the misconception from the Japanese-to-English translation is a really nice thing to know.
Also, makes me think, do you think Wolnir is meant to somehow represent the "Bearer of the Curse" protagonist from Dark Souls II?

You spin me right round, baby

😅
Im pretty sure the carthus sandworm was inspired by the Mongolian death worm since they're both depicted as giant worms and i seem to remember the Mongolian death worm having the ability to shoot lightning or at least some kind of electrical power
You see those warriors from Carthus? They've got curved swords. Curved. Swords.
I don't know what you will do after Dark Souls, but it will be amazing. You're extremely talented at video making and narrating, you can make it work for anything.
4:23 perfect description of me, looks like i'm related to Carthus warriors.
Do you have a favorite souls quote? I like Vendrick's "the brighter the flame, the deeper the shadow". Great video as always.
Victory at any cost. If I'm gonna die, then I'm taking you with me...
I like carthus.
Can't wait for more videos and E3!
Now that i think about it, the warriors of Carthus must have been durable and tireless fighters. They have a dark pyromancy that chases enemies by slithering after them, as well as acid surge, which we find nce again defining the Carthus style of fighting.
Acid surge does painfully little damage to weapons and armor, so it would take multiple strategic castings of the spell to effectively break armor and weapons. Perhaps on the battlefield, standing in these clouds of acid was almost unavoidable, so you had no choice but to let your armor deteriorate. Or maybe Carthus was from an age in which these pyromancies were far more potent. Who knows? Honestly i would love to learn more about Carthus as much as i can.
So... The carthus curved sword being an op meta weapon is canon
Carthus is the end of the world in Jason and the Argonauts. My favorite Harryhausen Easter egg in a game I think

You help me understand the worlds of these souls games with a fantastic soothing voice and I really appreciate your work
solaire = carthus sandworm
200 Ping Maybe.
Carthus sandworm is obviously a demon born of the chaos flame unlike how Vaati says it's a made from corpses. Proximity to Izalith & similar appearance to Rockworm from DS1 in Izalith support this. Solaire is found in Lost Izalith. Solaire uses Lightning Spear. Solaire gets infected by parasite in some alternate players game. Different lands across time are converging in DS3. Sandworm shoots lightning. Makes perfect sense.
yay another Vaati vidya finally!!!
When you think Vaati is already uncovered every Dark souls lore, then this happens
I saw solaire helm and had to rewind I was like. "Vaati confirmed?". I've been so excited for this since you've mentioned it
Wolnir reminds me of Ganishka from Berserk
This was just so awesome! I don't know if this game would feel the same to me without your video analysis! Lore truly comes alive here!
Hey man, greetings from mexico
That sunlight Helmet was the best thing in this Video :D love your small humoric inputs every time.
IS THAT A BERSERK REFERENCE!?
Yes. Yes it is.
The transition from the Catacombs up to the Farron Swamp is SO good.
Sand worm being solaire is so dumb it's on the level of sans being ness
Sandworm is a demon. It's a bigger version of the Rockworm from DS1 found in Lost Izalith. Solaire is infected by a sunlight maggot in some players games in DS1. Lands across time (and space) are converging in DS3. Worm shoots lightning, Solaire shoots lightning. The theory is plausable by in-game lore, the only argument against is "a maggot doesn't turn into a worm lol." Sunlight Maggot is just a name, it doesn't have any resemblance to an actual maggot.
I really like both the Abyss Watchers and the Carthus warriors, cause you can play them like bloodborne characters, dashing around the weapons of your opponents. Awesome video!
i want that thumbnail as a wallpaper, any1 has the source?
Great video as usual. And the audio quality was fine. At least according to my old-ass laptop speakers
If only the acid surge spell actually did work
Only really works in DS2, unfortunately lol
Cresce just “get good” with it
If ds4 actually comes to be i would love to see a desert setting, with desert pyromancers and sandworms, balanced out with very Pacific northwest-like cave systems
Nice vid but IS THE SANDWORM ACTUALLY SOLAIRE?!!????11?!??1
If it was solaire it would be wearing an Iron Helm instead of a corpse on Its body.
Nobody knows if the worm was born with the power of lightning so it is possible that the sandworm ate Solaire.
Since the sandworm drops an undead bone shard.
Why do you even need to ask of course the worm is solare
Dingo 154 'Solaire'
I think the sandworm migth be the youtuber sunligth blade

I would love to see a desert environment in Dark Souls, sure you could say that we got that with the Ringed City dlc, but that wasn’t a proper desert in my mind, I don’t know but there’s something about the ruins and reminders of the glories of empires as old as time, hidden and jutting out from the dunes like lighthouses in the sea, that’s so powerful to me and very Dark Souls in my opinion from what I’ve seen.

Yessssssss always hyped for vaativideo
I just read on reddit that they thought the protagonist of DS2 is Wolnir
Noah Starkoff lol
Personally i'd hate that. My noble character would never become a corrupted skeletal bitch.
Noah Starkoff Actually, that's an good idea...
NCR Elite Riot Officer Your character was always corrupted.Hence the name "Bearer of the Curse".
It’s a common theory but imo it ruins the arc of the Bearer. At the end of the game the Bearer either chooses to link the Fire and perpetuate the cycle, or chooses to walk away and seek a means to bypass linking the Fire. Neither of those endings lead well into the Bearer becoming a mad warlord.

What better way to celebrate Dark Souls Remastered being mediocre than more Dark Souls 3 stuff!
Casteverus It's literally the same game as DS, with some improvements and a graphical update and it runs at a consistent 60fps.
Whats mediocre about that exactly?
The fact that it's exactly the same. Specifically, all the exploits and bugs from the original are still there. The game is full of glitched textures, crashes, and hackers invading and killing people in one hit. It's not a remastering, it's a re-release. Just Dark Souls again, with nothing new except a fresh coat of paint, a glorified patch, being sold at full price, that doesn't fix any of the game's biggest flaws.
Casteverus
But isn’t that what a remaster is? Expect having more improvements with controls and graphics?
Yes, yes it is. While I don't think it's worth $20 for the upgrade, I can see why it is, since it wouldn't really be fair to price it differently for PC and it is worth $40 for the console versions. Some people are just spoiled brats.
Casteverus It is a remaster, what you wanted was a remake, they didn't have to do this at all and you most certainly don't have to buy it, this was more for newcomers than it was for you.
This remaster brings DS to the current generation of console, it also fixed a lot, but clearly you didn't notice, the game plays at a steady 60fps, they patched soul duping and tumble buffing, they added the password system from bloodborne/Dark Souls 3, they added the ability to swap covenants from a bonfire, they added the ability to use more than one consumable at a time, hell they even put a whole new bonfire by the skeleton blacksmith.
They didn't have to do any of this, but they did, for newcomers, Veterans of the series, and yes even complainers like you.
"At a distance they would peg..." 🤨
"These small machetes called kukris" 😐
