Personally I think NIto is not made up of multiple skeletons. He's one giant skeleton wearing a suit of human skeletons. Nito is literally a giant. He's found in the tomb of the giants after all.

This is easily the best theory i've heard regarding Nito, even though it hinges a lot upon whether the aura around Nito is actually related to humanity.
I particularly liked the part where you related Leeroy's phantom stages to his defense of nito and his desire for the Rite - that's brilliant. There are many more links to miracles and the Way of White than i thought!
Also, you clearly put a lot of effort into narration, presentation and the writing, so kudos. Make more!

I see it as an allegory to show you are no different than any other of those undead running around the realm trying to steal others souls to further their own aspirations. It's kinda poetic of real world self-centered ambition. If we care about our own success at all costs those who get railroaded in the process usually don't deserve it.
Unless you being the chosen undead somehow makes you a different kind of undead than any of those guys in the Undead Burg? I don't know for sure. Maybe because you still haven't gone totally hollow? It seems the onion head guy, Seigmeyer or whatever is a parallel to your character. Running around trying to achieve victory at all costs and depending on other's to help him through it (cause you summon phantoms too) but in the end his daughter ends up fighting and killing him because he's forgotten his family and gone hollow in his single-minded pursuit.

As for Nito attacking... I have a different theory on the discrepancy between him as Covenant Lord, and him as boss fight. Personally, I think Nito knows who you are and what you are the whole time. I think he's pragmatic, and efficient, and has nothing but respect for the Chosen Undead.
What I believe is that, when you come calling for his Lord Soul, Nito simply understands that it's time to have it out, and that the era is rolling over, with or without him. Simply put, the biggest piece of evidence of this is that there are no penalties within the Gravelord Servant Covenant for killing Nito, the Gravelord himself, aside from not being able to advance further. I think this shows Nito's understanding of your task, and as lord of death, perhaps this understanding stems from his acknowledgement of the inevitable.

I always thought Nito was possibly the most memorable of the 4 Lords. They theory is also quite sound since Nito is clearly the ONLY Lord who isn't insane/hollowed, and without a doubt is wise enough to know of the Chosen Undead's quest.

I find it funny how in games, death is stereotypically evil, but in dark souls, Nito, lord of death did NOTHING wrong. Gwyn sacrificed people who blindly followed him to extend his rule, eventually killing himself. Izalith attempted to create her own first flame, thus usurping Gwyn and in the process, created demons and corrupted her family. But Nito was just kind of chilling out in the catacombs. Even though he did provide necromancies, which in itself isn't bad, it's just teaching!

from a larger post I made above:
      large digression:
I just had a thought about the natures of frampt and kaathe. The two
bells that one rings to summon frampt are located near enemies who
relate to the fire element. fire is obviously an element that is opposed
to the undead, and certainly to magic type damage as well. this would
also indicate that fire is opposed to dark, which is echoed in the
      game's premise.
Gwyn and the Witch are represented by frampt, whereas nito and whoever
is the darkest soul are represented by kaathe. fire weapons are always
good versus the undead, and deep in nito's lair we find a blacksmith who
      specializes in this.
so the two serpents represent fire and cold. this analogy is evident
in the first dlc from ds3, in which the frost wielding friede (someone
else posted that friede means peace) prevents the end/rebirth of the
order, which is precipitated by fire.

One thing to notice is Nito's design. He is a pile of skeletons, a mass of dead bodies. And in the intro, when he's shown getting his soul, he rises from the ground, not like a person, bu like a mass.
Possible theory here is, that with fire came desparity - before there was no life and no death. But then fire happened and creatures started to experiense life - and invetably death. A bunch of them died between the appearance of fire and finding of the lord souls. Death was a new concept for the world, and this new abscense of life became a thing of itself - Nito. The consept of death gained actual representation on his form, when something as powerful as a lord soul could support it.
So I think before the lord soul was found Nito didn't exist, it was a bunch of dead people.

I feel as though Nito didn't like Gwyn and his quest for immortality, in the same way Havel despises Seath's magic. Gwyn wished to prolong the Age of Fire by sacrificing humanity and encouraging the Undead's process of Hollowing, for the hollow are unable to die. Because of this, Nito harvests humanity in order to hinder more kindling, and you can literally see the humanity exhume from his aura. Paladin Leeroy plays a huge part in Nito's story. He befriended Nito, despite his affiliation with the Way of the White, which was the church founded by Gwyn in order to fuel the fire; basically, humans were fooled by the gods, in order to fuel the age of gods and supress the absolute potential that resides in humans: Dark. Leeroy was one of many, such as Rhea, who was fooled, and upon discovering this, he turned his back on the church and began to aid Nito, by guarding his tomb after having kept a close eye on Pinwheel for so long. There isn't a bonfire in Pinwheel's tomb, so he didn't use the art of kindling to fuel the fire, but for necromancy. Time is distorted in Lordran, and we get to meet Leeroy in all his forms: when he was a foolish Paladin of the church (white) in search of the lost art of kindling, and as an enlightened servant of Gravelord Nito (red) after having found out the true nature of kindling. If defeated, you can find Leeroy's equipment in Nito's tomb, which means he didn't hollow, but was rather blessed with death through Nito's mercy. Rather than providing an undying service TO the gods, Leeroy, in his final moments, was a human serviced BY a god. Without humans, gods would not be worshipped, but without gods, humans may flourish through their own strength.

    • @joshuabernardo4305
      @joshuabernardo4305 8 років тому +12

Nito and Gwyn is disparity at its finest. Both in what they represent, and their ideologies. Nito wished for the age of Dark to come through Manus, but his idea of "man" was corrupt and abominable. Nito is unable to kill Gwyn, for the Lord Soul resides in him as well, and would have to relinquish his soul to the Lord Vessel in order to confront Gwyn (as well as retrieve the other Lord Soul fragment from Izalith). Of course, if Nito relinquished his soul to the Lord Vessel, he would die before he had the chance to fight Gwyn. And so Nito lies in idle wait for a suitable successor to take his Lord Soul, break down the age of fire and bring forth the age of man. Hence, his lack of concern when joining his covenant. Notice that the purpose of the Abyssal Covenant is similar to that of the Gravelord Covenant in goals, hinted at by the color of the player when invading worlds. The only difference is that the Abyssal Covenant was founded by a serpent, instead of the Gravelord himself... and the serpents should never be trusted, for their entire existence is questionable in nature.

I personally believe that the main goal of maintaining the age of gods is to prevent themselves from being potentially overpowered by humans when the fire dies. The gods are beings of the fire, and if they survive the fading, they likely would be powerless. Then The Pygmy (holder of the dark soul and as such the god of dark) and his humans (who are made human from dark) would rule over them and the world. The gods, after Gwyn kindled the fire and canceled the age of man, then insured that man forgot the power of darkness and swayed them into their worship.
It also makes decent sense that the three lords would do all these things just to "get back at" the "pygmy," considering man was created by him.
I dont know if I worded my theory clear enough to not sound like an idiot, but it seems plausible in raw, thought form.

    • @Dunge0n

+Joshua Bernardo Would you say the Abyss is wild and 'corrupted' Dark, then? In much the same way that Chaos is Life turned cancerous? I see a lot of lore meisters conflate the Abyss, the Deep and the Dark as some anomalous concept , despite all being quite distinct. For one, the Abyss only came to be after Manus himself did. Meaning that while Dark has the potential to twist humans as Life (Chaos) does, it's not its pure essence.

      +CrazyGrapefruit
It seems that when a human is alive, their true soul is their humanity, and after losing it from dying you decompose (unless the curse revives you, in which case you still decompose and become hollow, which could explain the madness of hollows). The key nature of humanity, to me at least, seems to be how your emotions can affect it. Pursuers and Affinity describe you taking your own darkness, and charging it with either love or envy, which causes it to do what those in love or envious do: blindly follow the object of attraction. When your emotions run too wild, such as the onset of Manus's madness, humanity grows and expands infinitely by the human's emotion powering it (If you lost humanity without dying, I feel like you would instantly die and hollow out, as the instant start of decomposition after loosing your life essence would be quite lethal indeed).
As Manus continued to rage, the Abyss grew from his blind fury, and lashed out at everything living, as Manus does. When he died, the main fuel source of the Abyss would be gone and it could not spread, so why would the Abyss appear outside Oolacile?
Personally I believe that the Abyss is not one location, but simply the result of humanity running wild and expanding over an area. For example, Wolnir's soul states that he killed hundreds of people "to outlive them all," and so this strong and evil desire could have disrupted his humanity and consumed Carthus in dark. It's possible that when the Undead Legion saw, they killed him to stop it from spreading further (hence why his skull is a chalice that leads into Wolnir's personal "hell" in the center of his own Abyss) and buried it underneath Farron, setting up a keep to prevent the humanity from seeping up from in Carthus.
When they became Lords of Cinder, the Abyss was not being fought back, and Farron and its legion was overrun by the dark. This could be why the watchers kill each other, and why some have the signature red eyes of Abyss corruption, as they would need to fight each other before attending to the darkened Farron outside.
The infinite nature of the Abyss is likely because of that as it expands, it becomes denser and moving through the dark takes time, though I cannot claim to know the physics of the dark soul.
As for the Deep I believe, from the human dregs description, that darkness has a tendency to separate from denser components and sink. Dark sorceries have a physical weight, as mentioned in ds1, so it's possible that this fluid material could eventually separate from itself. After thousands of years and linked fires, separate Abysses (or other compacted humanities) became filled with sediments that became stagnant, making them more potent and dangerous. So the Deep could be the literal filth of the dark soul and humanity, and forms after any one Abyss has remained undisturbed for some time, as stagnant water quickly becomes filthy and is likely to carry with it an infectious quality of some sort. Perhaps this caused Aldrich to become a cannibal, as his visions of a world where a giant Abyss covers the earth like and ocean (with the Deep being the dreg filled place that any remaining life settles into) were likely to have drawn him to investigate and eventually worship it, and could be the reason why he became sludge after bloating (consuming all that darkness, and thereby increasing the amount of potential sediment, could have collapsed him into pure sediment and truly make him the Deep's revered patron saint).
Does anything I just typed even make reasonable sense to anyone, or am I lost in my own ass here?

What I think: Nito is Death, the Witch of Izalith had the Life Soul. Gwyn has the Light Soul, and Manus/The Furtive Pygmy had the Dark Soul. Light and Dark fluctuate, but the closest Life and Death get are to be reincarnated through each other. I.E. Death dies, and is born again. Life dies. Same thing. Cyclical, just not on the scale of Light and Dark.

Wait a moment; if Nito supported, and may still support, Gywn and his age of Fire, and Frampt the King Seeker supports the Age of Fire itself, why would he send you off to kill Gwyn's allies at all?

    • @Rightontheleftside
      @Rightontheleftside 10 років тому +7

I believe, like you said in the comment, that King Seeker Frampt only supports the age of fire itself. Seeing as how Nito has no second thought about killing the undead that enters his lair, and spreading death everywhere else, Frampt may see this as an obstacle to his cause of finding the chosen undead to fuel the bonfires. Nito may support Gwyn, but as mentioned, only for as long as it is beneficial to them both.
Perhaps Frampt is being blinded just like the player is, and doesn't see the fact that Nito aids Gwyn, and sees only the fact that everytime Frampt may have found an undead strong enough to fuel the bonfire, he/she is shown no mercy when entering the tomb. (just speculation)

    • @Plato86
      @Plato86 10 років тому +5

I think it is because Gywn is desperate to keep the age of fire going and thus wants to put as much power back into the flame as he possibly can. If you talk to Framp he will tell you that the beings that hold the lord souls have either chosen the path of wickedness (I.e Seath, Four Kings, Bed of Chaos) or have outlived their usefulness (Nito). While Nito is still Gywn's ally, he is more useful to the goal of continuing the age of fire as fuel for the flame, rather than as the lord of death.

That's probably because the eternal snakes do not really care about anything but themselves. Frampt is the Kingseeker - and probably also the kingmaker, as long as they can control the flow of the diffrent ages they'll survive all of them.

I wouldn't exactly say that just bowing down to the Lord of the Dark alone showed he was in support of the Age of Dark. Think of this; a powerful tyrant rises to the throne, and no matter how much the people dislike him, they still bow down to the king in fear. Serpents are often depicted as sly beings, and perhaps it is this behavior, that allowed them to survive through the ages and consequently earning the Primordial Serpent titles; they simply bow down to whoever holds power.
Frampt is probably aware that you need to offer the Lordvessel the Lord Souls in order to open the gate to the Kiln, and that alone takes priority over any allies that Gwyn once had when he was still sane, as you cannot relink the flame if you can't get to it in the first place.

This was great! It also plays very nicely into the way Dark Souls was based on ancient western lore, where the god of death was less often strictly "the bad guy", and more often just another god who just has a duty: to judge the dead and monitor their passage to the underworld.
I'd love to see more of these from you, the only criticism I had was that it was obvious you were reading from a script, which is a very minor thing!

Youngster Joey mentioned that too, and I find it fascinating. I was thinking on it, and I think that it could be that Nito is a smaller being that uses the skeletons as his armor/coating. Look at how different his legs are too - they almost seem Dragon - or at least animal (like the skeleton dogs). The leg joint is backwards, like an animal would have.

Kindle the undead church. Kindle Anor Londo's inner wall. Kindle the catacombs. The tomb of the Giants. The Dukes Archives. Lost Izalith. Kindle Firelink Shrine. Strengthening the flames of fate. The bonds the undead share. Venturing onward, where others only dare. Beyond the ashes, in the heart of the flame. The place, where only embers remain. Sever the bond of cinder. And kindle the first flame. In order to remember. In order to try again.

I know everyone has moved on to DK2, but I just wanted to grow this out there. DKS takes many of its inspirations from pagan beliefs. I believe the reason Nito doesn't attacks you when you enter through the coffin is because when you are brought in through the coffin, this is the Gravelord servant rite.
But notice how the skeletons are kneeling before the pitfall in Nito's lair. Also notice the red carpet that lines the entrance ? This is a sacrificial pit. Most humans would die falling from that height, and by dying this way, they join Nito's army, but of course the player cant. I believe the pool where baby skeletons spawns also served as a sacred cenote like pool where parents would sacrifice their children as an offering to the death god.
The catacombs and TOG make much more sense when you view them from a religious standpoint. The clues add up when you factor in members of the way of white was down there, as was the sacred rite and occult shields.

Great work! I've been waiting forever for a Nito lore video.
I want to add that in the intro we see, that Nito is the first to grasp after the fire (he is also the only one of the four, whom we see physically reaching out for the flame). After that we see Nito, holding tight onto the flame, unlike the witch and pygme who seem to cradle the flame instead. In fact, Nito seem to look upon the fire with emotions like desire or obsession.

When Nito is called First of the Dead, we are shown in the cinematic several humanoids walking to their death. Therefore, the implication is that he is made up of a collection of the first beings that died. That’s why he appears to made up of multiple corpses and is called the first of the dead.

He's shrouded in a cloak of humanity because he wears a kind of coat of human corpses. The innate humanity those people had within them must have never been taken. Great video, it cleared up a bit of something I've been wondering, about why his blade spell is actually a "Miracle", a very "one of these things is not like the other" situation, but his connection to the Way of White explains that a bit. I'd like to hear more speculation on deeper origins, like how exactly did Nito rise to power? Who perhaps was he before being the First of the dead? Also to be exact, I think Gwyn is primarily the Lord of Light, and the Witch of Izalith is the Lord of Life.

I would say that Gwyn is the Lord of Light, as opposed to the Lord of Life. How ironic I think it is, that Gwyn of all people, is afraid of the Dark(Humans)
I personally think that the Witch of Izalith holds the "Life Soul" Seeing as it was seemingly fire, that created life, and the Witch herself inadvertently created Demons when trying to recreate the First Flame.

It makes you feel, the chosen one was used all along for the purpose of making the first flame last longer but it cannot last forever anyway.

Thanks! Yeah, I've been going back and forth. I view Gwyn as being similar to Zeus (with Nito being similar to Hades). So, in that regard he seems like a God of life (at least, human life, as the Way of the White and others worship him).
    - On the flip side, he's known for SunLIGHT, hence the heavy light connection. And The Witch of Izalith created the Bed of LIFE, and created the life of all demons, so she actually did create a form life itself.

  • @watashinoama

So much of Dark Souls connects to Greek Mythology if you think of the first dragons as the Titans and Gwyn as Zeus. The simple act of taking power from the dragons and creating the age of fire sounds similar to Zeus freeing his brothers and sisters from the belly of Cronus. Dave, your theory reminds me of the relationship between Hades and Zeus and I couldn't agree more.
