Why Apple Still Sells The iPhone 12

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- While shopping for an iPhone, you may have noticed that Apple still sells the iPhone 12, despite it being almost three years old. Why would they continue to offer this outdated device alongside newer models like the 13 and 14? Well, it has to do with a business practice popularized in the late 70’s called versioning.
This is where a company will create a product and then offer different versions at various price points. And it’s something Apple has practiced for years.
Calling a 3 year old device outdated is seriously a first world problem
Fr I got an iPhone 12 literally today. If it’s still fast enough and supports the newest software, what’s the problem?
I was kinda shocked when he said this, especially after just having recommended my Grandma to get one, I'm even still using an iPhone 7 Plus, that's now 7 years old and only recently the battery has started to really show it's wear, but I haven't noticed any performance issues and all apps, at least the ones I use, still work perfectly on it.
@@theoldtechhandheldtinkerer4092 you dont really realize how much slower your old one is until you get a newer phone
@@GoudLoodje I’ve had mine since 2020 and I haven’t experienced any major issues. It’s still a solid buy, but I’d opt for a newer model if you have the money.

@@MK8MasterJunjieSAME!

If you are going to buy a higher storage model. Then get a 13 as it starts at 128gb at base
this
Yup, 12 with 128gb is similar price with the 13 128gb. LOL
@@AppleReviews also new camera sensor compared to the 11 and 12
Exactly why I got it!
@@CleverMunkeyyeah honestly the fact that iPhone 13 starts at 128gb makes buying an iPhone 12 obsolete imo when there’s only a 50 dollars difference between them at that storage. 64 GB is definitely still manageable for some users, but is becoming less and less so.
Using the 12 since 2 years now, very smooth performance and decent camera. The only cons I can think of is the battery life because my battery health is at 86 percent and speaker gets distorted at full volume
I have the same issues, i am at 80 battery health and the battery is the worst part
Wow, Same here 86% and speaker issue.
I thought that Speaker problem was just because I dropped my phone several times, it's strange to see other people also having the same problem. Maybe its connected to this model itself.
I have a 12 Pro & it's @ 90% battery health. Other than that, no concerns.
My iPhone 12 battery health is at 66% ,but I don’t really feel the battery degradation as compared to when the battery health was at 88%
@@Jedidiah_ hahahah that is a little too much
I upgraded from the 12 to 14 this year, there’s a difference but it’s honestly so minimal that it doesn’t matter.
Good to know, I was thinking of upgrading from my 12 to a 14 but I think I'll wait until the 15 or even the 16 if they're still doing those
@@daniel_7173unless if you want a cool looking island on top of your screen and a USB C port that you can share with your Android friends, I'd say just wait
I know the situation, i had my iPhone 8 for like 5 years and didn't want to upgrade if it doesn't stop updating iOS.. sadly it happened, but there is a difference on my new phone camera, but still not worth the price
Why did you upgrade then?
@@hobbygrg-eudaimoniastudio I'm wondering if I get my battery replaced on my iPhone 8 and keep using it for many years to come, maybe I'd be able to break my smartphone addiction because I wouldn't be able to get any apps or browse the web due to the phone's software being old. All I want to do on my phone is text and call. What do you y'all think of this idea?
Something that wasn't mentioned: due to European and Brazilian laws (as well as many other countries, although I don't think the US in particular does this), Apple has to supply spares for a few years after release and in some cases even a few years after the last brand new unit was sold (from them to a distributor or store, not the end customer). As such, they basically have to keep producing iphones a few years regardless of whether or not there are brand new models, because they need those parts. And if you have all those parts anyway, why not just slap them together and sell it? That's the logic behind it.
Cant buy 13pro in Europe.
Extra parts is how they invented the SE
@GGWP nice pfp 😮
@@MarekKubi u cant nowhere it’s literally not being sold anymore by apple
If I understand correctly, apple also has to honor the IP rating, which is possibly why the device costs more over there? In America, they don’t, because there is no way to actually prove how the IP rating failed. Probably the same with extra parts. If they are going to be forced to create extra parts that may never get used, you can believe they will recoup that loss somewhere.
Now it’s starting to make sense.
I'm shocked to say, I been running the iPhone 12 since it came out and I'm going to be almost 3 years. Works flawlessly, just need a new battery soon.
Same. No desire to upgrade at all. Planning on going until support is dropped. It’s nice knowing I still have a few more years left
Yeah especially with the base models of the new iPhones being very similar I don’t see the point in getting the base 14. I can see why the base 13 is good to get but there’s absolutely no reason to go for the base 14
I have 84% battery health should I replace it?
@@ashmakes21 I would
@@ashmakes21 mine is at 66% , don’t replace yours 😅 I use the iPhone 12
The 12 is still an EXTREMELY competent and a good model even now
I got one since it’s the first model to support 5G.
The iPhone 12 is only 3 years old, dude. For an iPhone, that's far from old. We still have people using iPhone 4s and 5s because instead of buying new phones and succumbing to perceived obsolescence, they just replaced the battery on the phone they already have. Apple and third party repair shops do iPhone battery replacements. You should try it. It's better for the environment, and it'll probably be better for your sanity.
They did the same thing with the 11 and xr. They sell the non pro models, or affordable models for up to three years. They sold the xr till the 13 came out. They sold the 11 till the 14 came out. And they’ll sell the 12 till the 15 comes out.
They always did that since time immemorial. When they sold the 6s they had the 6 and 5s alongside, even when they sold the 7 they had the 6 and 7s on the roaster
- Apple practices a business strategy called versioning, where they offer different versions of a product at various price points.
- The iPhone 12 is still being sold by Apple, despite being almost three years old, because it allows them to target customers in the budget smartphone market who have a lower budget than the flagship models.
- By offering the iPhone 12 at a lower price of $600, customers can enjoy features like a larger display, Face ID, and an extra camera lens without having to spend the full price of the newer iPhone 14 ($800).
- Apple can reduce the price of older models as component costs and production expenses decrease over time, allowing them to capture more customers and maximize revenue.
- Apple also offers the iPhone SE at $400 for customers with even tighter budgets, providing a more affordable option with some outdated technology but still delivering a true iOS experience.

For me an iphone is only outdated if it’s not supporting the latest OS anymore which the iphone XS and iphone XR still do. And for IOS 18, the iphone 12 is still getting more features than the older models that will support IOS 18.
I am still using iPhone 12 Pro Max since 2021 until now. There is no issue just on the battery health from 100% and now only 97% for that period. That’s it 🥰

Outdated? I love my 12. It is definitely not outdated. It literally has 5g. He’s running out of ideas
It's outdated to be sold after 2 years. We already have 2 new generations.
It is almost 3 years old and they’re still manufacturing the phone and it’s components so yes, it’s outdated but only for it to be sold as new. In terms of software support it isn’t.
Haha poor
@@haroldberserkerKante:#### you
I also love my 12 mini it's not outdated. It's a gem 💎. Yes I also have 5g and esim. These guy here is out of his freaking mind 😳
Bare in mind that there is no difference between the regular 14 and regular 13 in terms of chip specs (both have A15 chips) so therefore the 12 is technically 1 generation old than both of them (iPhone 12 has the A14 chip)
It's not just about the surface-level prices. There are several options to choose from when it comes to iPhones.
The iPhone SE is the most budget-friendly at $429, while the iPhone 12 is the cheapest version of the flagship model at $599. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are last year's models, priced similarly to the iPhone 12. Finally, for those looking for the most up-to-date iPhone, there's the iPhone 14 or 14 Plus, which costs $799. And for those who need the best, there's the iPhone 14 Pro at $999 and the iPhone 14 Pro Max at $1,099.
Keep in mind that these prices don't include trade-in offers, and the cost may vary depending on the color and storage capacity you choose.
As you mentioned in the video, each model attracts a different market segment, with the iPhone SE catering to the budget-conscious, the iPhone 12 being a popular choice for those who want a flagship experience without breaking the bank, and the Pro and Pro Max models being suitable for those who prioritize the latest features and performance.
iPhone 12 is still good to this day it really worth the value
I still use a iPhone SE with the home button. Works for everything I need. I used the 12 at a job and hated how touchy the screen was. I like the mechanical home button.
It’s not mechanical, its haptic simulation makes you think it’s mechanical
Outdated ? it's practically the same as the iphone 13 and 14 (only regular 14 not the pro)
Outdated? What planet are you on? It's from 2020 and is the first of the new design to come out. It feels like yesterday it came out.
For most people, the only difference will be a bigger notch and fewer years of software updates. Otherwise it's no different from 13 and 14 basically.
How about “why text/iMessages do NOT sync between iPhone and MacBook”?
They sync up for me, might have something to do with the model of your iPhone and MacBook.
(Edit:) I found a setting that allows you to sync your messages over iCloud. Look in your Messages preferences. (Messages > Preferences > iMessage > Enable Messages in iCloud)

I mean the 12 is still relevant. The design is still modern apple still uses phones with the flat edges, and the processor is not much slower than what’s in the 13,13 pro or 14 pro. With iPhones the speeds are plateauing and aren’t seeing huge leaps in performance. I think there will be a time where iPhones won’t really be discontinued from software support for speed. The 7,8,X and 11 are still decently snappy and run fine.

Seriously, since Iphone 12, there have been minor differences between the models. Differences that just aren't enough to get anything beyond 12.
The problem is that Apple has reached a point where there is not much to innovate anymore, at least when it comes to phones.
And even when there are things many people would love to see on an iphone, apple is just too stubborn to add it.
(Hell, the only reason why I'd be thinking to upgrade to iphone 15 is USB C, and even that wasn't apple innovating, it was due to the EU)
You just want a new design. That is the only thing you consider as an upgrade. Because the iPhone 12 was hardly an innovation after 11, yet you point out minor differences starting from 12, not X.

The original iPod came out with just 5GB of storage in October 2001. The 10GB model came the following year in March and the 5GB was retained. Apple certainly do versioning, but with the first iPod there was only one model on release day.

Hey man I'm pretty curious, do you work for Apple?
Idk if y’all know but when the iPhone 13 released they started selling the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11 and when the 14 came they got rid of the 11 and that’s how it keeps going so when the iPhone 15r releases then the 12 goes away
I watched this video on iPhone 14 Pro. Definitely better than iPhone 12.
“It’s 3 years old and outdated” yet plenty of people are still using older phones. My dad uses an 8 Plus and I use a XR. They’re both a bit old now, but they still work. Old doesn’t necessarily equal outdated, just means it’s not as good as the newest thing.
This phone isn’t outdated but there’s parts of the phone that are a little dated like the smaller non diagonal cameras because it doesn’t get sensor shift on every later model excluding the 12 pro max and the Battery size is dated at under 3000 mah for this sized phone offering poor battery life compared to the 13 and later
The 13 and 14 are cheaper now that the 15s are out so it makes more sense to buy like a 13 pro for 500 dollars or a 13 or 13 mini instead of a 12
Well $600 budget smartphone is absolutely wrong it belongs on higher midrange phone.
Man we still sell iPhone 11 in here
I got an iphone 12 last year and I still have it. And the reason they most likely sell it still is because its in the middle of new and old and its moderate and not really old

iPhone 11 and 12 were probably the biggest difference, 13 was just a smaller notch, and 14 a different notch, because screen (besides FPS) and the body of the phone look very similar between the 12, 13 and 14.
It is still a good phone. Of course they still sell it. I don’t even know 3 year old models considered outdated device.
I literally saw a lady using an iPhone 6+ at the bus stop the other day. What’s outdated is upgrading every year and calling last years device “outdated”
This guy 1 year from now:
Why does apple like to be apple
Hey, a friend of mine recently got an iPhone 12. Secondhand from a friend of his who decided his phone was outdated and he wanted an upgrade.
The whole point of getting an older model phone is to save some money, why would anyone spend $600 to get a phone that’ll stop getting software support in 4 years just for the peace of mind that nobody’s done anything wack to it? A refurbished 12 Pro Max 256gb will run you $100 less than a new 12 64gb.
There's also another idea behind offering different models at different prices. I forgot the name, but it goes something like this: a customer will look at the cheapest product and considers purchasing. But wait, the next model up is just a bit more, so they consider getting that model. But wait, the next next model is just a bit more than that, so they consider getting that model, and so on. So while there's a $400 difference between the iPhone SE and iPhone 14, it feels less because the consumer will compare the prices between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 12, then the iPhone 12 with the iPhone 14.
I use the 11 it’s a great phone and i can’t tell much of a difference between it and when I use my friends iPhone 14
Something that isn’t mentioned: iPhone 14 Plus *is* worth it because while for £100 more you get a Pro iPhone… what about personal use: hear me out. I personally wouldn’t consider iPhone 14 Pro because 14 Plus has a bigger screen & more storage £100 more gets you 128GB, a smaller screen & less battery life so I don’t think it’s worth it meanwhile 14 Plus is ✨perfect✨ I hope this helps the few people reading this 😗
For the same price you could get an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
My iPhone 12 mini is the first phone I've ever owned where I don't feel like replacing it after two years. Even with the battery life at 82%, I still think I'll get another two years out of it. If you don't need the most up to date hardware (and few people realistically do), the iPhone 12 series is by far the most sensible iPhone to buy right now.
Make sure to update your battery once its goes below 75%, It doesn't go all the way to 0. Phone will be useless at around 60%, and I think after I got to 70, it was dropping 1% every day or two.
I use a 12 pro max and it doesn’t feel outdated at all
It’s like in the Apple ad when people upgrade from a 12. The 12?!
I own an iPhone 12 and it’s better than my previous 11. Never had battery drain but that’s likely because it is a late Summer 2022 release iPhone 12.
Answer: Apple sells 3 models, the last one (this year the iPhone 12) gets replaced with the second option (this year the iPhone 12 will get replaced by the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 15 will take iPhone 14’s spot)
You know what’s annoying? The iPhone 14 is barely an upgrade from the 13 yet it still had a higher price than the 13 at launch, and the 13 price is unchanged even though it is from 2021.
What they should’ve done is to bring some of the features of 13 Pro like triple lens camera or LiDAR
