- France recently announced that they would ban sales of The Apple iPhone 12 after it failed a safety test. So what exactly is wrong with the phone? And should people around the world continue using it?

I’m French and everybody is talking about that right now. It’s not that big of a deal but the amount of misinformation spreading about it is crazy 💀 my sister said that she heard we could get it replaced with a newer model by going to apple but that’s clearly not true lol

Apple has 2 weeks to introduce an update. As a french possessing an iPhone 12, Thank you for giving the correct information to strangers rather than doing shorts insulting one or the other party of the problem. Great video!
@TheErrorInBlack Je suis d’accord.
Le gouvernement lui-même n’a pas réagi correctement. Avant même d’engager la discussion avec Apple, ils ont fait part de la possibilité de rappeler les iPhones 12. Pratique pour semer le chaos.
I use iPhone 12 too and my battery is not that great , how long does your phones battery last
@@kimjong-un5570 Personally I have a 12 mini so it’s very bad in terms of battery life
Wdym brother are they gonna give an update now?
It’s interesting that not many people are asking why this is being discussed almost three years after product launch. Did EU not certify all electronic devices before approving for sell in EU?
My thoughts exactly. How could they be sold if they did not go through certification that checks for these issues?
I think the problem came with an update but I'm not sure
@@omega3678 it’s an interesting comment. Assuming it was caused by the software update, that means it can be fixed by another update. Then there is no need for all the fuss.

At this point Europe is the biggest nightmare for Apple. First USB C, now this. 💀💀
But Apple keeps turning it into sales. What are the biggest reasons to upgrade to the iPhone 15? "It has USB C" and "emits less radiation". Apple doesn't even have to change anything about their phone in any meaningful way, Europe is basically marketing for them. You know I'm starting to think the people that run Europe have stock in Apple.
How is getting compliant with regulations after having been found not to be a marketing argument when the competitors' already are compliant.
But now it’s only in France and easier replaceable batteries are also coming for Apple and Samsung, that’s gonna be a huge issue for all manufacturers because they like using their glue on the batteries
@@TheRythimMan they made loss of switching to usb c otherwise they would’ve never switched because now they can’t charge companies for producing a proprietary cable and also they never advertised this „less radiation“ since it was only a problem with the iPhone 12, they fixed it with the iPhone 13 already
@@TheRythimMan "The people than run Europe" LMAO
as an iPhone 12 owner, it damn well can burn you, if I play rec room for more than 2 minutes it gets hotter than the fucking sun
Ok true💀
Fr, its my first iPhone, thought it was a general iPhone problem. Maybe I need a new one...
it also gets so hot when charging with 15W
Mines never hot
mine is quite hot rn, it gets very hot when i’m charging aswell
You’re more likely to notice your iPhone feeling hot in your hand from the heat given off by the CPU than any warming happing from EM radiation…
3 years into owning my 12 mini, it will get so hot I can’t hold it 😂😭. I should’ve listened to the tech bros when they warned about the battery
@@ImThatGuy00wait you mean it’s gotten hotter year by year ? Or it was alre hot from the beginning

Every country has regulations about radiation exposure but this is not a health concern but instead it comes from regulations that forbid non authorized people to emit electromagnetic waves with more than a specified limit. Like you also are not allowed to boost a wifi signal beyond a specific amount of wattage
@@lordhelmchen100 thanks that was some useful info there.
To add to what was said, all signals used are considered nonionizing radiation, so it’s not dangerous, won’t cause cancer, won’t hurt you in any way/shape/form, and it won’t heat you up from the inside as some people actually think. The heat mentioned is all from the chipset and the phone gets hot from heat dissipation. That’s it. Same thing happens to your computer, tablet, modern TV, etc. If you notice your phone getting hot form heavy use, the screen will dim to try and use less power to cool itself down. At that point, either shut your phone off, stop using the app that’s making it hot, or put it in front of a fan.
@@danielschmaderer phones could technically heat you up inside, but the amount is really miniscule. Probably the only way to have negative effects is when you infront if a 3000 watt antenna that is also focused on a small point on your body
@@soacespacestation8556 but it won’t damage your cells. It also depends on the frequency. A microwave, for example uses a frequency of 2.45 gigahertz because that’s the exact frequency that makes water molecules vibrate fast to the point of boiling and heating up food. Any other frequencies would render it useless. But, as you mentioned, microwave ovens also are at wattages as low as 700 watts and only go up from there, which can impact how quickly it can heat up.
Regardless, it’s all still nonionizing, so it can’t hurt you on a molecular level. The battery itself has a higher chance of hurting you if it’s poorly constructed.
I remember seeing this on the news a week ago. In the same report they said "it dangerously doubles the amount of radiation numbers imposed by France" and "but there's no evidence of it causing any real harm".
thank you for making consice and informative videos. it goes a long way
1:48 I wonder how many people using iPhone, clicked their screen not realizing that that pop-up message for an update installation was a part of the video and not a part of their iPhone
Haha, they almost got me, until I thought, wait a second… 😂
Couldnt get me because it was full screen 😂
I was really really close to almost doing that…. They have us trained well 💀
Cant get me, i am watching on a ipad, dangerously close though
Almost had me for a minute and I'm using Android.
France is gonna ban flashlights and light bulbs with this kind of regulations.
Standing outside in the sun for literally seconds is considerably more dangerous than your phone could even theoretically be. The amount of complete misunderstanding of how the electromagnetic spectrum works by even mainstream publications is quite worrisome.
Exactly. Basic knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum is key to understanding how ridiculous this is.
I high wattage lightbulbs can give you heat stroke if you’re close to it from the heat radiating out of it. Not gonna hold my breath for the ban of lightbulbs ever.
@@quantuminfinity4260what’s sad is that it only takes basic knowledge to understand that this is all ridiculous, yet no one seems to understand it at all, which adds to the problem and worrisome of the public’s basic general knowledge. I’m not the smartest person by any means, but when I’m worrying about someone’s basic knowledge, then there’s a problem. The comments prove the need to worry and why I usually engage in conversation about this.
@@danielschmaderer I agree with this worry, I try some times. But some times it feels like an impossible battle when almost every single comment on some news videos covering it are like "Apple can adjust the radiation some ones phone puts out with an update?! This is very concerning!" I really do enjoy helping people understand things when they are unsure or misunderstand. But I feel badly because I literally can not take the time to address even a fraction of them.
@@quantuminfinity4260 I do agree. I try too, but only so many people will understand.
The other problem with electromagnetic radiation is that it can interfere with TV, radio and communications signals.
Also, the frequencies of the electromagnetic signals the iPhone 12 is designed to be capable of receiving are several orders of magnitude lower than the PHz+ range of UVA and above. In an alternate history of the iPhone, in addition to being much easier for the end user to fix themselves, _all_ iPhone devices are also designed to be capable of receiving electromagnetic signals that are several orders of magnitude lower in frequency still than the GHz range of the 4G LTE/5G cellular and Wi-Fi networks they are able to connect to. Of course, these signals are at 64-108 and 162-163 MHz and correspond to FM and NOAA weather radio.
😂
What iOS affects this issue? I still use the 12 mini as my daily driver and it’s on iOS 16.0.
I have the iPhone 12 and I am not going to upgrade it until iPhone 16 or 17. It works great and it is a perfect phone for my usage. It can get a bit warm sometimes but I am sure it has nothing to do with the radiation.
Sometimes The Warmness Can Have Something To Do With The Radiation
14 to 16 pro ?
I would normally update my phone every year to the newest iOS but I rlly do not know now since I have an iPhone 12 will it crash my phone..?
Probably gonna stick to iOS 16
It’s non ionizing radiation, so there’s nothing to worry about. It’s better to wait as you are. I have a 12 pro and I’m happy with it.
@@danielschmaderer should I upgrade it to iOS 17 idk
Well we all know that iPhone 12 is one of the few iPhone that have the issues like battery life, cosmetic issues and this one
Not an expert or anything but this is probably due to the iPhone 12 having a strong 5G capable modem along with the fact that it is actually thinner than the iPhone 11 and the iPhones 13-15.
Some people freak out over 5G, not realizing how safe it actually is. Too many conspiracy theorists adding fuel to the fire of something that doesn’t need to be worried about and the French government is falling for it.
I wonder how bad the cellular performance degraded after the update was issued?
Are the 12 Pro series also included, or is it just the regular 12?
Every.. single.. iPhone.. before.. 14..
The solution for overheating phone is by putting a case into it which the case would insulate some amount of heat. Depenting on what type of case you are putting it on👍
Sure, your hands won't feel as hot until the heat trapped by the case actually does damage to both the phone and your hands lmao
Phones get hotter with a case on. The only heat exchange that can happen is with some of the phone’s frame or back being exposed to air. Contain it in a case and temperatures will be much higher.
It’s actually the same issue you end up with when putting a hardshell case on a macbook
Well radio waves can easily pass through thick walls.
🙄
I've loved my iPhone 12 for the past years since release but these new updates seem to heat up my phone worse overtime. Nowadays I am being burnt by my own personal assistant over its own rages. My iPhone just be throwing fit even when it's off.
I have an iPhone 12 Mini. I don't know if it has this issue, but it's not gotten hot during the two and a half years that I've owned it.
Holy macaroni, the amount of comments about the heat of the SOC/phone, really makes me doubt humanity. 😵💫
Hi, can you do an episode how updating a softwRe could change a hardwares SAR?
I am an iphone 12 mini user in Africa. I noticed that the iphone 12 mini frequently heats up and once that happens, the phone will disable its functions and enter sos mode until the phone's temperature cools down. I often would rap a wet towel around the phone to help reduce the high temperature of the phone and stop it from entering the sos mode.

I’m in the US. I had so many issues with my iPhone 12 getting extremely hot, like, burning the skin hot. I brought it to the Apple Store and tried to demonstrate, and when the employee felt it she basically called me a wuss by saying heat is “subjective”. Like… what??? No honey I don’t think my phone should be this hot just from charging normally… but ok
why the fuck would you buy an iphone anyways
@@BobBark you should be able to charge your phone normally and not get burned when you touch it. You should also be able to charge your phone normally without it overheating in a normal environment. This was not the case with iPhone 12, which would regularly pause charging or completely stop working because it was too hot. The Apple Store employee just wasn’t buying it.
@@BobBark In my experience as well.

Is it the Standard iPhone 12 or all iPhone 12 Models?
I just realized that I had an iphone 12 haha. I think the update was the newly relased ios 17.0.3 which is supposed to fix overheating of iphones and probably fixed the SAR as well
I called apple (store) when I discovered and they literally said nah thats just France that makes very weird tests... I was like okay but its still over the legal limit?!
only the legal limit in france tho
You do know that each country has their own legal limits?

Another reason why I upgraded from the 12 pro max. That’s what I tell myself 😂

Its impossible to have the radios heat up your skin, its simply too weak and unlike a microwave isn’t specifically designed to heat up something

Won't this update impact signal strength and speeds?
Yes
Yes, because they have a hardware issue that's existed for the last three years- and they want to take the easy way out.
I have an iPhone 12 Mini and hope this update France wants doesn’t inhibit my phone’s capabilities.
My iPhone 11 gets hot when I do something extra performance taxing, and yet they haven’t banned that one in France.

Fun fact: iphone 12 does not have a usb c port, only a lightning if you didnt mod it
What what presumably relevant is, how many other iPhone 12s were among the 139 that did NOT exceed this legal limit?

So... once Apple releases an update to fix the SAR, does France get to sue Apple again for releasing a software update that makes their phones worse again?
I do quite agree with this, I once owned an IPhone 12 mini, there are moments that my phone heats up than normal to the point that it really is concerning that I have to stop playing and cool the phone for a while, to think that Iphone 12 carries a powerful chipset. I used to own an XR and now downgraded to the 2020 Iphone SE, They don't heat up that much. This is concerning.
This is the most stupid comment.
It’s not about a hot SOC/Phone.
The SAR is about the antenna signal radiation, that slightly heats YOUR body’s tissue. 🤦♂️

I’ll do the update after winter
Even bad news is used as a advertisement.
Why this is appended in mid 2023?
When iPhone 12 was launched in 2020 it wasn’t any issue related to this… 🤔
I have an iPhone SE 2016 and I think that sometimes when on charge or when on a App that demands lots of power of battery, the phone burns the hands!
Way that the France authorities don’t see any problem with the iPhone SE?
Maybe because is classified by Apple “vintage”? 🤔
it happened in 2023, because france test a few hundred phones at random each year- and ironically enough, included 0 iphone 12s in previous years- instead accepting Apple's documentation on how high its SAR was.
as to "how the difference happened"- Apple tests, in such a way that it assumes you don't have anything in contact with your Iphone, France tests phones assuming you have them in your hand or pocket... in both cases, it came up at near twice their legal limit.
So if I’m using my se and the iPhone 12 receives a update then my se NOWHERE near the 12 will also need updated
Like updating my devices cause of some others mistakes
Updating your device is clearly a way of apple slowing down your phone lol. That’s why they have constant updates
