The iPhone X Controversy

- The year was 2017, and Apple was gearing up for a milestone. It was the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone, and they were celebrating it with the introduction of iPhone X. This was no ordinary release; it was Apple’s statement to the world about the future of smartphones.
IPhone X was unveiled at the Steve Jobs Theater in September 2017. The event was filled with anticipation and excitement as Apple fans and tech enthusiasts around the world waited to see what the company had in store. - Наука та технологія
Just another proof that our brain stopped registering the passage of time after 2020.

I can’t believe the iPhone X is vintage already. It felt like a phone that was ahead of its time back in 2017.
Other than face id, it wasn’t really ahead of its time. It was just catching up to what android was offering

Rare footage of Apple Explained making a long video
It used to be like this when he milked each subject to be over 10 minutes long and actually started the ‘real’ video after about 8,5 minutes
Stop being mean
If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it
@@wombadoo4229he’s not being rude. Apple explained does not do long vids often.
I LOVE when he makes the longer video. More time for the nostalgia dopamine to kick in. 🥳

Bruh, I found an iPhone X 256GB in a recycle bin, from $1149 to recycled in 7 years. It was in mint shape, and it was not only FMI off but already reset.
NO WAY
@user-gn6tk2yi6g There was also an iCloud locked iPhone 11 in there

Wait… Seven…. Seven years…. How… How dare you make me realise how quickly time is passing 😢
Where do you live? In Dubai?
How the iPhone X and the first gen AirPods are now considered vintage just amazes me
1st gen AirPods were always garbage.
@@sigiligusWhat does that have to do with being considered vintage?
I'll never forget the hype over the iPhone X.
I remember everyone hating it. Just like 90% of all new things, it's initially hated, then loved after 4-5 years pass.
iPhone X had the best design even if you buy one used today it feels premium and dated it was truly ahead of its time, I prefer the rounded edge now
Yeah, flat edge never felt comfortable in palm
Literally the main reason why I still keep the X alongside my current iPhone 13 Pro. The compact size + rounded edges still wows me in today and I still believe that it's only 5 years old at most
I finally removed a D-Brand skin I had on the back since 2020 when I first got the phone. Man, I can’t believe I was missing out on how smooth the glass back feels all this time. Made me like Xs Max all over again. Definitely still feels premium.
I remember getting this device when it first came out . . . Man, time flies
Bro no fking way
Where is the controversy? What is the video about?
How some people disliked the notch and new way of navigation. As well as some suspicions that Apple was storing their Face ID data
The iPhone X had significant changes that were controversial in nature, many people didn't like it at first.
Also the $1,000 price shock.
But the general public in the US failed to understand that the $1,000 is for the device if you pay it off immediately (which I highly recommend, because of the fact that you can use MVNOs or prepaid plans, or change carriers later at any time without contracts or unlocking). Most people I knew instead did monthly financing with their carrier. Likewise, the carriers switched to more transparent pricing models (how much you pay per month for the phone) by the time the iPhone X came out.
The iPhone 3G from 2008, on the other hand, was subsidized in the US for a $200 down payment + 2 year contract.
As someone who has followed the iPhone market since 2009, I know that pricing models have changed from subsidies and contracts to monthly pricing.
😂
Yeah,90% of this is positive and 10% “controversy
Omg I remember EVERYONE calling it straight up X and I’m like it was 10!!!😂 One of the most insufferable times when people were calling it that lmao
“iPhone 2G 🤓🤡” is even worse like it’s called the iPhone. Or original iPhone. Come on there wasn’t an iPhone 4G or 5G either and there wasn’t a 2G either.
2017 is just a year ago how is this vintage
I find it interesting how Apple builds upon the previous iPhone models. Nowadays, they put features from a “Pro” model phone from the previous generation on the base model of the next generation. (Dynamic Island as an example)
Pro motion 💀☠️💀
@@mightnare3237 Telephoto camera 💀💀☠☠
true but at this point the smartphone design is pretty finished.. what more can they do? All future regular slab smart phones are going to look the same and are only separated by software features, which are getting less and less impactful each year because of how mature the smartphone space is
@@The92Waffles At this point, making technology more modular and customizable is where new phones could differentiate themselves. The problem is that companies don't want to do this as it is not profitable for them.
Making a device that can come apart means that people can replace individual parts when they are no longer useful or are outside of their lifespan, which is tremendously cheaper than buying a new phone or device.
It has come to a point where companies like apple, dell, hp, samsung and more keep trying to tell people that devices are unrepairable and need to be replaced because the technology is "too advanced" to be repairable.
This has bled down to everything from phones to even dishwashers and now cars. Cars that were previously serviceable by anyone, that you could easily find new parts for.
@@heroninja1125regular user need finished product, not base only
Another downside of the notch was that it took away a longtime iPhone staple: battery percentage. We could no longer constantly see it in the status bar, and instead had to swipe down to Control Center just to see the exact percentage. Battery percentage on Face ID iPhones would not come until iOS 16, which was released in 2022.
no u just had to manually go turn it on, i had it on when i got my iphone xr in 2018
@@ahliaspobre true. But to clarify, the percentage option ONLY appeared starting in iOS 16. All the prior versions of iOS (11 to 15) did not have battery percentage as a selectable option on iPhones with Face ID.
I remember being a sophomore in high school when this was announced. Literally everyone in school was talking about it and wanted it. I still remember people gathering around a person who had it lol. There was a lot of hype behind the phone
I remember it too, I would just use my ancient iPod touch and people would come after me thinking I had an iPhone X, and I would pull out my other ancient iPod and they'd go insane thinking I had two and I was rich or something. They were just old iPods from 2009, not two white iPhone Xs.

The iPhone X was incredibly expensive to the point where it maintained the same 999$ price point until now.
I still have the Xs today.
That's crazy. I've had 3 different iPhones since my old XS Max in 2018.
I just want to know who bought an iphone 8 when the X came out in the same keynote lol.
Probably people who cared about their wallets.
I did. I upgraded to an 8 from a 6 in September 2017. You have to remember back then that iPhone customers were not used to the prices like they are today and I was put off by how much the X was. A new model of iPhone that was at a price I was expecting still seemed very appealing to me and that's why I bought an 8.
my wife had the 8 Plus when I met her lol

Stuck on an X, overheats and lags after playing games for 10 minutes, thankfully I have an iPad Air M2
Same with XS, what’s your battery health?
iPhone X is now trash if u had it since 2017
@@itischeckMy X is at 72% capacity and handles the same way as OPs comment. It still does stuff, just at a much worse way. I’ve had mine since release day.
Then somethings wrong because I had an X until getting the 15 Pro and never experienced lag or issues like that ever.
Then it may be a problem since that’s not how iphones work. Iphones never lag
Still happy with my XS. Don’t like the look of the cameras on the newer ones. But, I suppose I’ll be forced to upgrade next year when they stop support for it 😢
You're gonna feel a little sad when you upgrade to the newer phones because the iPhone XS and XS Max are the last iPhones with the 3D Touch feature. You don't really notice it when you normally use the XS but long pressing on icons and apps are slower on the newer iPhones and I always notice the slight delay when you do that and it makes me want to hold on to my XS Max as well before they stop supporting it. I want to keep mine at least until 2026, time just flies quickly, dude...
@@Kiror0_3D is so underrated
i have the iPhone SE (2nd gen.) and really I like the older models, they always seem better from my view after a few years old, and I'm still attached to having a smaller screen and a home button.
I had the iPhone SE 1st gen. That thing was rock solid. Probably the most dialed in smartphone I've ever owned.
How much usable life do you figure you have left on your 2nd gen?
As a huge iPhone X hater at that time, I thought there was no way I’d give up my home button. I pulled out my 6s+ the other day and I thought it was funny how awkward I found it to be. A significant part of the selling of new tech is convincing people the “way we’ve always done it” is not always better. I’m still upset about the headphone jack though.
Wasn’t wireless charging introduced with iPhone 8?
Is it just me or is the audio/video quality really low even at 1080p?
Yay! A video over ten minutes!!!
I sincerely do appreciate the effort in these longer videos. Thanks
Wow a video longer than 2mins nice
iPhone 8 & 8 Plus were the first to have wireless charging. They were announced at the same event but 8 launched 2 months earlier.
More long vids pls
Still using the XS max, waiting for 16 to launch and use it for the next 6 years.
2027 is probably when Apple will introduce a foldable
I doubt it. Knowing apple won’t do anything impractical unlike Samsung. But who knows they might do a foldable that’s tougher and no crease but also it might not happen.
love ur vids bro
It is true that the iPhone X set the standard for iPhone design, but for smartphones in general? No. The Galaxy S8 was the standard of modern smartphone design.
Not really because the iphone released AFTER the s8, and the s8 wasnt anything special as it was just following a trend that was followed by many other androids at the time and even the display itself wasnt anything special as it actually had some extremely unsettling notches, also not many modern smartphones still follow the middle placed camera and notches as it really wasnt a good thing
I vividly remember this, still have mine
Wow you uploading a lot of videos lately.
i remember the morning of the release sitting in class watching mkbhd's snapcaht stories and freaking out about how a phone has no buttons haha
By the way. The IPhones are a lot more expensive here. The iPhone 15 cost about $4,000 AUD
My iphone Xs Max still rocks today LMAO.
Same goes to my X after a battery replacement last December
please make more long-form videos like this
This was my favourite IPhone kept and used it till 2022, even when the screen was fucked had it fixed so many times was the one, been having to replace with a new model ever since
Man when this launched I was so blown away. Just the thought of facial recognition in a phone was practically unheard of. And I remember everyone wondering how they were gonna adjust without the home button.
I remember that too. A new IPhone without the home button was revolutionary back then

Great video. 👍🏾
I want the home button back. I don’t mind a little bit of bezel
2017 is 7 years ago. Damn…
I don’t miss the home button at all.
I loved my iPhone XS Max . . . until it literally blew its brains around half a year before the 14 lineup launched. Trust me, I got my money’s worth on that device - I drove that device HARD every day. Major power user, as it was my only device. Did even have a working laptop. I was very sorry to see the phone’s brains fail without warning, which got the device stuck in a boot loop that I couldn’t fix with the typical fixes. I sent it to Apple for repair, and they said it was totally toast.
I put up with an extra Android someone loaned me until I could get a 14 Pro Max once they were released. I never used an Android as a full time device. Worst time of my life, lol. Been using iPhones dating back to the iPhone 2, lol. Before that, it was a Windows smartphone, and a variety of Nokias and flip phones before that dating back to ‘99.

I still have a XR and I’m amazed it has not failed me
I was working for samsung IT dept at the time and was amazed by it. And that outrageous price. Saw someone dressed like plain as a library buy the 256gb and was so excited, said he worked hard for it. Shook his hand, told him to enjoy
I think it’s funny how Microsoft skipped windows 9 & Apple skipped iPhone 9
why is half the video so low quality

Watching this on a 15 thinking I’d like an iPhone X lmao
There's just this one or more reasons that I can't explain which makes me keep my iPhone X (as a sidekick to my current 13 Pro) despite having upgraded
One thing I do miss about the IPhone X-11 was the design. I wouldn't go back because USB-C is so much better but not too much a fan of the IPhone 12/5-esque design choice.
this is still a timeless phone

the biggest controversy apple ever faced was removing the headphone jack
I had a top of the line 256GB iPhone X, and I had used it to replace my 32GB iPhone 5, which replaced my 16GB iPhone 4, which in turn had replaced my 8GB iPhone 3GS. Since then I’ve had a 512GB 11 Pro Max and my current 1TB 15 Pro Max. Nothing, and I mean nothing - not even the X - feels as good as that iPhone 5 felt in my hands.
awesome! The iPhone 5 WAS the best. So glad to hear someone else say this. Ha.
Which colour did you have?
@@AnHebrewChild I had all matte black! It was smooth, elegant, easy to use/hold, and had a great camera. I really want to buy one BNIB just to hold onto!
@@39PSIOnTheDaily I agree. I called it the "Vader Phone"
Generally I find that swooning over electronics to be cringey... but for this I make an exception. I find the iPhone 5, especially in black, to be a supremely GORGEOUS device.
And you're right. Easy to hold. Felt perfect in the hand... the screen was just "bigger" enough from the 3.5" iPhone 4/4S to not feel cramped. The black/grey of the 5S always looked geeky and unfinished compared to the perfect shimmer of the "Vader Phone"
That design was dialed in.
Ya know, I think I may pick up an old one just to have as an "iPod" -- good idea.
Cheers
I upgraded from a 6S to X when it came out 2017, good times
I have an iPhone 12 mini. People take for granted the design of phones now with almost full displays.
Sometimes I look at my phone and still appreciate how far we’ve come - this hardware was only a dream to me back when I used an iPhone 5.
Same here, from almost every generation until the 6 before the X and now 13 Pro while still keeping the X.
Even today in 2024 I still can't get over with how beautifully the iPhone X is designed and feels in my hand to the point I wish it packs the power and storage of my 13 Pro so I won't even upgrade to an "iPhone 13 Pro"
Oh dear, a system error has caused the transaction to wander off to an invalid email address.
Now here’s a guy who knows how to make an EXCELLENT video. Thanks Greg, I love these videos. ❤
do Android gesture the same as the one on iPhone?
I hate phone's gesture navigation.. Like I have to reach the top left corner to close Instagram camera.... Phones are already so big it is inconvenient
I agree that it's a beautiful phone with lots of great tech in it, it's just wasn't for me. It's been 7 years and my current phone still has a fully rectangular display, a Home button, an audio connector separate from the charge port and a fingerprint scanner. And I dont't feel like I'm missing out on anything...

bro why change microphone quality, sounds bad
Many other manufactuers jumped on the notch trend. Teardrop notches were a great relief over the wide ones, and the punch hole camera became the most comfortable method, apart from the pop up camera of the OP7 pro and the in-display camera of some mix phones.
Nobody has tried it, but electrochromic glass really should be looked into. Its a glass that turns frosted when charged, and transparent when released (Its usually the opposite). It can blend the light of surrounding pixels or shrink the punch hole.
Or, a seperate screen that slides over the camera.
Ok... I'm about to go down a rabbit hole.
Just ran a search on "Electrochromic glass"
Thank you.
Nice information, thanks
i di think that the Face ID technology it’s still super advanced, probably one of the most advanced technologies ever created, and probably it was part of the Apple Vision Pro development.
