You Beauty!! I have a pen, one of my first and I did not turn the end flush enough to the nib section. You can feel a slight ridge. It is a beautiful acrylic pen but I need to get the nib section off, So I can fix it. You Sir are my savior. Thank you. I did ask a friend he said you will destroy your pen trying to fix it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

That was so informative. I have normally been able to dis-assemble most of it. Very instructive.

If there was any worry about damage to the components, I'd utilize wooden dowels.
The block of wood for disassembly is a good idea - I'd make another (out of plastic or nylon) for assembly if the pen is assembled in a metal vice.

Thanks for the video. I just started turning and tried my hand at making a few pens. I wish I had seen this before I tried to disassemble the one I put together incorrectly. Very informative and helpful. I would rather not have to purchase specialized tools for each step as well.

Just happen to click on this video out of curiosity.
Nicely done video. I agree, the Satin finishes just don't look very good most of the time.

Nice one Jon, i too turned my very first pens yesterday and 2 are hideous and i now know how to disassemble them and use the kits again.. nice video and nice presentation style. I reckon i might just use your site to purchase my next set of pen kits and some other stuff. Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, if you made a mess of the tubes just turn them so all the wood comes off, clean/sand off the glue and start again - nothing wasted. You can buy spare / replacement tubes but you should rarely have to. Good luck.

Why do it the hard way, use a flat washer instead of the pliers to remove the trans.

Very good John. Was considering buying transfer punch set but thought how many would you use and now I know just 2. Time to go on a hunt in the workshop. Cheers Geoff

2 for a slimline - but lots of sizes for other kits and also trimming up pen blanks on the lathe - I couldn't do without my transfer punch set - it gets regular use.

I'm trying to dismantle some pro gel pens can you do a video on how to do it

    • @prokraftuk

It is on my list of things to do - probably not until next year we are currently far too busy. I would suggest getting a set of engineers transfer punches and use them to disassemble. If the pen kit has any plastic parts as click pens often do they will break before they come out.😢

I had a problem with a twist mechanism having an internal piece with a spring. No way to fit a punch through it to knock it out. If you can tell me the brand that has this, please post it so that I never buy it again.. I tried using vice grips to lull out the twist mechanism and ruined it.

Sorry Steve, "slimline" pens are manufactured by a whole host of factories none of them identifiable, the parts all look the same but are usually very poorly manufactured hence we don't sell slimline pens, I would suggest you don't use the supplier you bought from ensuring you don't get the same kit. I'm afraid most people buy the kits based on their price and if you buy a cheap nasty pen kit you will end up making a pen to match.

It is a very odd one if it is - it's only 3mm with a plastic handle. Please don't tell me there are miniature pens too!
