Welcome to pen crafting! I, too, started with the Slimline kits. They are inexpensive and allow us to hone our skills before attempting more expensive pens. I love to make pen blanks out of logs and branches straight off the trees. In doing so I have discovered some unique grain patterns, and the pens tell a great story. One of my favorite woods is toyon, which is native to California. It has a very light color with a swirling darker set of bands, especially when turned as candle holders or bottle stoppers or goblets. Have fun exploring this new to you aspect of woodworking. Blessings, Glen PS: I you can give me a means of contacting you directly, I would love to send you a few toyon blanks. That would be totally unique back there on the east coast.

I never had a clue how people turned and made pens. Now I have a general idea, thanks for that.

Thanks Pat, you should get a bench lathe and give it a go! It's always fun to step away from the scroll saw for a project or 2

Very nice way to use scraps. Pens look great. Maybe make a jig to hold blanks when drilling

They look great. Really enjoying the new content. Always remember "Adapt and Over Come" it gets me thru a lot of those " I don't think I can do this" moments.

What size of pen mandrel did you use for that lathe?
P.S. I'm left-handed, too. Great video! Thanks for posting.

I sent you an email a few days ago and I was wondering if you received it. I am mailing you a small box of pen blanks for your pen turning enjoyment. Most of the blanks come from wood harvested directly off the trees. By the way, Penn State has a pirate themed pen kit you might like for yourself. Have a great day, Glen

Not keen on the "speed of light " turning, can't follow the process

In actuality it takes around 5 to 7 minutes for me to do all the turning, sanding, and finishing. Hope this helps
