I did this replacement on my 2015 Silverado this morning in the parking lot of the parts store. I also replaced the serpentine belt while I was at it for good measure. Tip: if you have trouble getting the new belt on to the alternator, remove it off of the tensioner roller, place the belt on to the alternator first, then the belt will slide right on to the tensioner roller. With the tension relaxed, of course.
This video was awesome. I replaced the alternator on my 2015 Suburban and the simple way of showing how to do it in this video made it so simple and saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you!
While some models are different in the position of the air vent, and exact location of the alternator, the principles you describe to pay attention as to how to do it, what comes first and what next, etc., are very informative. I was able to change the alternator on 2014 GMC Yukon. Saved money. Thank you.
Excellent video, especially giving the wrench sizes and torque numbers! Also, the detailed comments on how to release the alternator charging connector and the crankcase vent hoses were helpful - no plastic was broken. The reman'd alternator was too tight to drop in. The bronze bushings in the front are split, and can be moved forward. There wasn't enough room to use a (plastic) hammer to move them forward. I clamped vise grips *tightly* on outside of the right bushing, then slightly pulled as I turned the bushing back and forth. The left bushing was more stubborn and the vise grips kept slipping off. But a pry bar with a bit of jigging easily pushed the bushing out a bit. The pry bar jigging: Cut a small piece of wood a bit less than distance between the back of the bushing and the face where the back of the alternator mates. I used a short piece of angle iron to bridge between the back mounting screw holes, which serves as the anchor for the pry bar. Moving the bushing: Place the cut piece of wood against the back of the left bushing, then place the pry bar tip against the back of the wood. The pry bar handle will be to your right and fulcrum of the pry bar will be against the angle iron. Push the pry bar handle toward the engine and the bushing will easily (at least for me) move forward. With the bushings moved forward, the alternator dropped in with no restriction.Tightening the mounting bolts will draw the bushings back in to their desired positions.
Thanks for the video bro! Simple, detailed and well done. Made swapping the alternator super quick and easy. Saved $940 from what they wanted to charge me to have it done. Appreciate it.
Did repair on 2014 Silverado 1500 2wd LT, only difference was the two tubes with the grey lock on the air compartment box, there was only one of them on the left side. Thanks!! 👍
Great video, thanks! Wrench sizes were spot-on, everything was where you said it'd be... really smooth & easy process! One thing I'd like to add, as I just did this, is those bushings have a cut/groove in them & if you have a small pair of vice-grips to clamp on the outside of them, they're MUCH EASIER to tap / back out & give you the clearance you need to put the new alternator in. I messed around for ~ 10 min trying to tap those out a bit, with no luck, before I finally saw that groove & immediately thought "vice-grips!"... TWO THUMBS UP! =)
Big thanks for this really easy to follow vid. Just swapped out my alternator by myself, works great, and your explanation of every step was clear and easy to follow. I do appreciate you saving me the however many $$$ in labor cost.
Great vid! Thanks! Tapping the bushings out was the worst part for me. I very carefully used a Vice grip to close them a bit, then a couple light taps did the trick. Much easier and less stressful not worrying about breaking off those ears.
heads up anytime you disconnect the battery... could trip emission codes that may require driving hundreds to reset. my suggestion make sure emissions are completed prior to battery disconnect (or aren't due for a couple months or more).
I replaced my alternator with a high output alternator & now it keeps stalling. Keeps sending random codes & it says the charging system isnt working properly. What could be the issue?
+butlerp434 At this moment, the closest how-to video we have to your request is for this vehicle, which is very similar to the one you have. The steps may not be 100% the same, but should contain an adequate amount of information necessary for accomplishing this task:
Old alternator wouldn't charge the battery, now with the new one in, I get an error on my scanner saying it is overcharging 🙄🙄🙄🙄. 2015 Chevy Silv 1500 LT
+Jayy8Bit We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
+David R We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. Buy this part for your vehicle on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Absolutely not. DO NOT hit those bushings with a hammer. Use a socket, bolt, washer and another bolt to push bushings out. Again, DO NOT HIT THEM WITH A HAMMER. Come on guys.
+joshua a If one of the wires for the alternator shorted when the alternator was replaced, then this will occur. If this occurred right after the alternator was replaced, then there is something that shorted when the alternator was replaced. Thanks for the question.
1A Auto Parts I got a fuse tester and it seems like power is only going to the right side passenger fuse box but no power to the fuse box under the hood fuse box and driver side fuse box. Any idea?

Thank you..took less time to change than it did to watch video, because of your clear instructions.

I did it but instead of removing the whole serpentine belt I just removed from the alternator only
.......and thats why mechanics are worth their weight in gold!!!
appreciate the video!!! extremely easy to follow , just finished up took me roughly 40 mins!

How do you get those little shims to move? I can’t get the new alternator in
Thanks for a very clear and detailed video, Well done.
Do you have a video on a 2018 for an eassist?
Would this work for a 2018? Just asking cause it’s the only year not listed in the description…
Great video very clear and easy to follow 👍.
Who else struggled wiggling the alternator out of the bracket😂
I had to sit on top of the intake manifold
This looks easy. The 2015 Colorado my son has is completely different and very difficult to access. I wish it were this easy!

Also keeps blowing the fuse
That’s a clean engine!
What size are bolt holes for alt side casing? I wanna run a ground there
you put the old alternator back on? just for demonstration? why not install a new/rebuilt alternator?
God bless you for making this video
What size motor is that and does it matter?
How about changing it on a 2019 4.3 ?
Is this the same as a 2015 suburban?

I have 2014 Chevy Silverado you no how much is the price for alternator
I just paid $391 for one last night for the 2014
When your conducting the torque, theirs no need to torque it twice, your just doin an extra torque. Once your hear the click it’s torqued.

easier placing it over the tensioner pulley last. IMO
What do you call the pipes on both sides @1:08
