the minute you turned the key on and the chime was at full blast I knew right away there was an aftermarket amplifier in the vehicle. also there was an LC-1 volume knob on the knee bolster, the wire at the under dash connection was what the audio shop used as an "amplifier turn on (remote wire)" and it SHOULD have been installed on a switched accessory wire (they installed it to a constant 12v instead causing the aftermarket amp to stay powered on) you could have put an amp clamp on the 4 guage wire under the hood and seen the amp draw. the boxes behind the radio were called line out converters. they are installed at the factory radio speaker outputs to drop down signal to RCA level to go to the aftermarket amplifier, and there would be speaker wires tied into the speaker sides of the wires that came from the amplifier. Also you should have noticed the large blue 4 gauge wire on the driverside firewall. That will have been connected to battery positive and ran to the amplifier. (probably mounted on back wall behind seat) great video again dude!
It suck’s from the customers prospective; he didn’t know the prior owner hacked it up. Hopefully it wasn’t a flood car. Great diagnostic work tracking down it’s draw.

This is the first parasitic draw video I saw with multi meter set to amp and inserted between ground wire.- Thank you. bizarre nobody else seemed to do such simple approach (to identify parasitic draw over two amps)
That was a hack job for sure. If you want to install an aftermarket amp, spend a couple of bucks more and get the proper patch cable that plugs into the factory harness. It's only about $30 and makes a clean install. If you want to ever remove it just unplug and everything goes back to factory. No more hacked up wiring.
Good morning brother, thank you for your video, I went through the same process and found it was a parasitic drain/short in my steering wheel. But what I really need to find now is the link for those battery terminal jumper clips that plug into your kline tool. Again Thank you for your help bro.
Moral of the story: stop messing with factory wiring I ran into something similar with my 2014 Sierra…….someone messed things up. Leave it factory Leave things alone It works better that way
Awesome job Oz, was this the one you did a little while ago when I asked about a 2014 Chevrolet that had a different issue or that you couldn't do a video on? It was on your last video before this like a couple weeks back. Good video buddy, I appreciate all your guy's help, knowledge and advice thru everything.
@@OzMechanics its all good if ya weren't able to do a video or if ya got busy, not trying to be a pain. You mentioned you had someone come by your shop with a similar problem as my vehicle a 2014 Chevy Malibu LS and I mentioned saw a video from your buddy Eric G at Advanced Level Auto. You commented saying that it was funny I brought it up and you had a customer make an appointment on similar problem as mine, just was wondering if ya found the conclusion to that similar vehicle.
That is to retain steering wheel controls and door dinger when installing a cheap aftermarket radio and or subwoofers. They come with a stupid loud speaker that most people duct tape foam over to quite it down. It's supposed to be on a key power obviously. Most likely previous owners had a android headunit and put most everything back to stock. Just easier to leave the thing behing the cluster and trade it in. Probably kept the radio for the 2017 2500hd they traded for.
I'm having that same problem, custom sounds hooked my amp ,10s, and lc71 , having a voltage problem and my chime is super loud with the chime volume all the way down, thanks Maan
Appreciate the video! I Have the same problem, chime is turned down and its loud. Bought new battery 3 months ago and now says low battery.. 2014 Ltz with the sound system package, could this be same issue? I’ll check it out for sure
I have a 2018 Silverado 1500. Had for 3 years. The dinger on my is really loud also. I cant stand that. I have it turned down all the way. What should I check? Thank You
With such a high draw, I wonder if an infrared camera would have saved a little time at the fuse box. Aftermarket installers should be required to supply a wiring diagram to help fix problems later. I suppose they don't want to do that with security systems.
That is another option I could explore. I just remember Eric from advance level auto telling me, Eric o made a video using the infrared camera and that lead him to a rabbit hole. Need to ask him about that video, so I can check it out.
Thanks for watching Steve. Unfortunately, No. I pay a monthly subscription… but you can look up alldata diy and get it for a one time charge for one vehicle
How do these people sleep at night after jacking up someone’s ride like that? As you know once they mess up electrical systems they can brick a vehicle or leave someone stranded. Good video. Subbed. 👍
I’ve used different approaches in my career and I prefer the in series test I did on this video. I also made a video testing a draw using the in series test, amp clamp and voltage drop. You can find that video by watching this video again and clicking on the tab on the top whenever you get to the part of the video where I talk about the voltage drop test
I have a 2007 Ford 250 and the battery goes dead in about 5 days I tested the battery and get 13v when charged the alternator is also putting out 14v . When i do the test to see draw the meeter goes to 1.39v and within 4 seconds goes to 0.19 and stays there . What could be wrong making the battery go dead in 5 days Thanks for any help Norm
I’m having a similar problem with the parasitic draw and I’ve unplugged every fuse I can, also replaced alternator and went through 4 batteries. It drains within 8-10 hours of shut off .Help! 07 Avalanche

My '07 does the same thing (did it last nite/this morning), but it does it so randomly, it would be a futile chase. Perhaps once a year.
