Megs face when she feels insecure is so adorable. It's okay to feel pressure and not know what to answer. It's good that you are trying things outside of your comfort zone. Respect! Also, good video in general, as always.
The struggles of going from powerlifting to weightlifting. Seriously this was so helpful. I've definitely been trying to deadlift my cleans and this makes a lot more sense now with the bottom position setup.
I can't imagine going from one to the other because I just learned deadlift, bench, and squat... but not really for powerlifting, I'm trying to become a bodybuilder so I'm all high reps... these fancy moves would kill me 😂
This is the best video I've seen in a long time. I don't care what anyone says, getting in the gym and watching QUALITY/INTELLIGENT coaches coach or going through things with them is always better. I'd watch these all day every day. Great job!
At first I was going to make a comment that said: "SMACKING THE BAR AGAINST YOUR HIPS ISN'T THE BEST WAY TO LEARN". But I'll be darned-- she started hitting the power position and jumping & shrugging without ever having to teach that! Great stuff! It's really cool to see how different coaching/cuing styles ultimately get athletes to that same position!
It's kind of like the "to shrug or not to shrug" argument. If you look closely at any elite lifter in slow motion, they all end up shrugging, the argument is whether you should actually TEACH the shrug
I am literally thinking the same and I believe its right - You are NOT supposed to be humping the bar. You bring the bar inside and at the "touch" you extend.
Pure gold! The way this coach breaks down mechanics is pure gold! I never understood it until now.... you are creating momentum in the bar so that you have enough time to get under it. All the individual components are the driving forces to help direct momentum of the bar upwards... allowing you to get under it. Pure gold!
I've been working on almost identical drills, really working on hip contact, and that moment when Meg nails it (21:45) is exactly how it is... when everything comes to together, the lift feels about a thousand times easier. It just clicks. Great coaching.
She said "I just want IT to look cool". That IT changes the meaning slightly. She wants to get the lift right and not try to keep upping the weight as fast as possible. She probably should have said good or right instead of cool though.
Are you insane? I hope you have good health insurance. This is insanity. the ultimate jerking and heaving movement. Take a heavy weight and jerk it over your head. Knees, lower back and shoulder joints are taking an unreal amount of jerking stress. This is nuts. At least with normal weight training the weight is moved at a much slower rate and this gives the body a chance to slowly suport and grow. I am thinking this girl will do anything to look good, very ego driven. I think she does think about her health but I think her ego is cashing checks her body doesnt have the funds for eventually. If she just had a web site where she lifted reasonable weights and her body was musclar, she probaby wouldnt get those precious You Tube hits.
Learned 3 things. 1. I've been holding the bar overhead wrong this entire time lol 2. hip contact drill, always thought it was wrong but looks like it is widely used 3. I need a JTS shirt now
What an awesome, patient coach. I am almost 60 years old, doing crossfit and am going to really practice his advice. The snatch is such a frustrating movement.
yo. I was training and clicked on this video. saw, heard, and applied it. and got 2 new prs. thanks guys. this is the video I've been searching. awesome. keep it up
I was just looking for a good how-to snatch video then saw Meg Squats whom I LOVE and have been following for years and then to see that she was the "guinea pig" just made this video so much more enjoyable.
thank u so much for this video Meg. I've been on the internet for couple hrs now looking for serious technical training for beginners seeking out Olympic lifts. BY FAR best and most helpful info I've seen. thanks again!
my understanding is that "hitting the bar" literally means to use your hip to hit the bar, not using the bar to hit your hip. The physics here is when you use your hip to hit the bar, your hip extends instantly. this horizontal movement of hip leads to a fast rise of the shoulder height, and gives the bar a sudden vertical acceleration, so the bar gains some speed going up and we get down below the bar before it drops back. For advanced lifters lifting big weights, they are more focused on extending the hips, so contact with the bar might not be as obvious as when using light weights.
What Max is teaching here is the Russian/Eastern European method. Go see videos by Dmitry Klokov and Aleksey Torokhtiy. Both teach that you bring the bar into the hip, you don't bring the hip to the bar. Why? Once the lifter breaks the bar off the floor there is created a "lifter-barbell system." Moving the hips to the bar overextends the hips and shifts the center of gravity forward. This can result in the lift being missed forward, the lifter having to pull the bar back which causes a big backwards jump, or the lifter will jump forward. Not to mention that lots of power will be lost. As for getting under the bar, for a long time I made the mistake of trying to get down before the bar dropped. This resulted in my not finishing the pull. The acceleration of gravity is constant so there is no way to get under the bar without a head start, which results in not finishing the pull. But there is a solution to this. Once the bar leaves your hips you immediately pull with your arms and lift your legs up. As you pull against the bar you will actually fling yourself under the bar faster than the acceleration of gravity. This is known as the "third pull" and is a big part of both Klokov's and Torokhtiy's teaching progression. While US coaches are afraid of teaching "arm pull" these two are actively encouraging it. The key is timing. It's not that arm pull is bad. It's using your arms too soon that's a problem.
@David Diaz Actually slamming the bar into the hips does give it some pop. I wish I was taught this as a new lifter. Nothing confusing here. Obviously a lifter can't rely on this hip contact alone to lift the bar - strength is still required. But actively slamming the bar into your hips in the snatch and the upper thigh in the clean is correct technique. If done properly it doesn't hurt at all.
@@MikeXCSkier The old videos on the Cal Strength channel teach the olympic lifts in a very different manner. Most american coaches, I think, teach the snatch and the C&J the same as Cal Strength, but the way the russians and Max teach them makes more sense to me.
@@sergiotl7378 If you're talking about Glenn Pendlay's old videos those were not that bad. I used that technique for many years. Pendlay taught that the second pull had to be performed with a vertical torso. I probably overdid this because this caused my shoulders to be behind the bar. It worked for a while but I plateaued. The Russians teach the second pull or "explosion" as they call it with a torso that is inclined slightly forward. Your shoulders should cover the bar as long as possible. This one change in addition to aggressively bringing the bar into your body has changed my weightlifting life.
You shouldn't hit the bar with the hip, it is purely psychological. If you notice closely, she doesn't really hit the bar, but thinking she is going to makes her give the propulsion she needs and instantly raises the elbows to bring the bar up and go under it. It is like "Ok, here she is, do the rest!". My coach is always telling me that snatch is the most physical movement we have in weightlifting and CrossFit, just because the body should mold to the bar and not the other way around and that it's kinda hard.
correct. I once read a quote from a russian weightlifter describing the 2 sports' athletes (weightlifters & powerlifters). "Weightlifters are formula 1 cars, powerlifters are dump trucks.."
weight lifters focus on the art of lifting the weight power lifters focus on the art of achieving the most power to lift the weight because of this power lifting is a branch of weight lifting meaning weight lifting is a prerequisite and no one should start power lifting until they gain the skills from weight lifting that they want to use in power lifting
Omg thank you a million times, I’ve always wanted to learn this. I’m pretty advance at the gym, but always wanted to take my training to the next level. And this is absolutely a game changer, because of you guys I now fully understand how to do it, i understand the form, just have to practice practice.
Outstanding beginner Snatch tutorial. The coach is excellent. Very patient and positive. Provides great word pictures and technique cues. The girl in the purple shorts, Kristin Pope, is just so much more naturally explosive. She's one big fast-twitch fiber. I like how she gets excited for the new girl. This is an upbeat video with great technique drills.
Perfect for me - I've got so frustrated with the snatch, that I'm not doing another WOD until I can do it right. Best tutorial I've seen, and I've seen a lot! -
This beginners series is helping me so much. Thanks guys

Why haven't I found this before!!! Thank you so much! I always struggle with snatches and overhead lift in general. One of my biggest problems is the position of the arms (elbows in / elbows out) when I have the ber over the head. Usually I feel more confortable and stable with the elbows in. When I put my elbows out I feel like the bar will pass behind me, like a dislocate movement. These last month I have focused on squeezing my shoulder blades together as much as I can. This has helped me to feel more stable, block the bar and make the movement more automatically.
I found watching Kristen at half speed in the beginning of this vid very helpful. I think I finally understand the form of the Snatch. Lately it seems I found a sport I enjoy in learning Olympic Weightlifting. Very cool. I was afraid of the Snatch but have been working on the Clean and Jerk. Thank you
Thank you for making and sharing this step by step training session, as a beginner in CrossFit, barbell movements and especially snatches are challenging for me. Keep it up :)
OMW these drills are awesome! Really struggle with doing a squat snatch and now to see each and every movement before going into the squat makes a huge difference. Definitely doing this drills from tomorrow.
Great tutorial, has a beginner have had some difficulty making the transition from powerlifting to weightlifting, particularly pulling the bar with my arms
I loved this video. I know that it was hard, but it was nice seeing someone so awesomely strong and talented kinda struggle to learn something so new. Kudos on the hard work you put in! Love your vids!

Love these videos. Coach Pope and Aita rock ... and thanks to Meg for doing this because I'm trying to do the same thing: transition from powerlifting (40+ years) to weightlifting ... everything Max said is so true (about benching power vs. overhead, etc.) ... these are GREAT videos.

Awesome video tried to put some of these tips into my own lifting session and found the weights a lot easier to shift and as a result easier to pull under! Does anyone know if there is a video on stretches and mobility work that JTS use for warm up and to improve range of motion for Olympic Weightlifting?
Really like Max's comment at 6:23. "Weightlifting seems like it's just pulling and catching, but there's this special thing that happens." Yes, it is a special thing. Technique matters. Don't let anyone lie to you and say you just need to get strong and you'll be a good weightlifter.
When Meg says "Why are weightlifters stronger than powerlifters, relatively" - 17:20, what does she mean? Females in the +90kg weight category in the clean and jerk have been posting numbers above 180kg for a while now. But, in the highest IPF weight category (84+kg) women are pulling and pressing and squatting well north of 200.
Aside from not really being able to directly compare the different movements, does anyone know what they are getting at?
i have been waiting for beginner tutorials regarding olympic lifts for the longest time! thank you JTS!!!
Some really good vids have been made by Aleksey Torokhtiy. He's an Olympic gold winner. They are in Russian but have subtitles.

Hip propulsion is wrong. Hip contact making SOME noise is correct.

I'm just as confused
This is such a great video... I've been trying to get the technique down for this movement but haven't been bale to... Thank you
