      The .50 cal machine gun was made to be and still is the ultimate sword. Power armor would have to be able to stop full auto .50 rounds to become the ultimate shield.
      So not sure if powered "armor" will really be seen on the battlefield.

    • @vescovinator
      @vescovinator 7 років тому +13

      The point is to stop small arms fire like ak 47s and other small weapons. so the power armor would be very effective until an invading force uses only .50s and other HMGs. Also if you listened to the storytellers power armor lore the defense is nice but the main reason is it allows a soldier to wield the biggest swords (ass you would phrase it) on the battlefield by himself. I would pesonally suggest a gau-19.

    • @Braindamagedpotato

      Power usage , production and field use are the main reasons we don't have irl power armor. We still have anti materiel rifles from ww2 that could easily mission kill a power armor frame , not to mention grenade launchers , shoulder mounted missiles (Javelins specifically), black tip 50 cars and of course IFVs with 25mm autocannons (?).
      Though if we ever become a space faring species , power armor could be a game changer seeing as that ballistics and mobility in space are completely different

    • @chr0n0s17
      @chr0n0s17 2 місяці тому +2

      @@Braindamagedpotatopower armor doesn’t mean that tactics are thrown out the window and you just walk towards the enemy. Power armor would still be like putting a thousand pound weight on the scale of war, you would have troops who can carry extremely heavy weapons platforms, be resistant or immune to small arms fire, while also being agile enough to carry out strategic movements typical of infantry. you would effectively need to be hitting a large amount of infantry sized targets that are effectively using cover and bulldozing your strongpoints, all while advancing, with anti armor weapons.

    • @lordundeadrat
      @lordundeadrat 7 років тому +6

      Tesla's battery weights well over a thousand pounds by itself. It's also as wide and as long as the car. The advantage Fallout power armor has is fusion cores. Magic compact fusion reactors that can output power on unbelievable scales. IF you think fusion cores drain quick. Hooking a tesla battery to power armor might be enough to get yo down the street to the next closest red rocket to put it on the charger again.
      Battery power is without a doubt the single largest problem we face with all our electric equipment. Be they cars, phones or giant suits of power armor.

    Okay, gotta make a correction here: all three major forms of ionizing radiation are stopped by the equivalent of a few feet of dirt (or a quarter-inch of lead). And that's for gamma rays, which have the best penetration. The shelter you showed had three feet of dirt on top, and the rest is concrete - there ARE no "layers of steel" in it.
    Power armor's radiation protection will therefore depend on how dense its plates are - which you can up-rate by modding at the power armor bench (with lead, natch). If not for the fact that any articulated suit is going to have some gaps which can't be as solidly covered - knee and elbow joints, neck, waist flex area - you'd prolly be able to stomp around in the Glowing Sea as long as you liked.
    Or until a Deathclaw snuck up on ya.

    The polyethylene armor is armor panels, just like the ceramic or metal plates, that goes inside a vest.. made of an extreme long-fiber, like Kevlar (or one of the competitors like Spectra Shield)
    The military has specified and formally researched powered armor since the 1960s. In the 1980s the project was called PITMAN. Future Force Warrior is just the latest version of it.

      Comm243 Yeah like the fusion core nonsense. It was already established in the lore that the energy source of a power armor could power it for centuries, even millennia, but in Fallout 4 you sprint for a few seconds and your core is depleted. Its just typical Bethesda not following their own lore while trying to not make the game more of a walk in the park than it already is.

    • @cinder8926
      @cinder8926 7 років тому +21

      If you could tank every bullet ever and each fusion core did last that long there would be no reason not to wear power armour 24/7. Its the way it is because of game balance. The challenge of the game would be eliminated completely if that were the case.

    the major difference between most of the real world armor and the power armor frame is that the PAF is self-supporting. it acts more like a vehicle that the wearer sits inside, while the darpa gear is attached to, and holding onto the wearer, being supported in part by them and in part by itself. because of this, the frame holds the weight of the armor better, being basically independant .

    • @bofa987
      @bofa987 2 місяці тому

      additionally, he completely skipped over the actual use of the power armor: sure, he talked about the lifting of heavier loads, but the real use of the armor was to be able to lift extremely heavy weaponry while having the mobility of an infantry unit (i.e. minigun, lighter forms of artillery) You are also right, in Fallout, power armor is a suit of armor that you step into kinda like an iron man style suit. it isn't an exoskeleton that is attached to the user, it is a powered vehicle that the user moves in.

      Which brings me to a game mechanic that makes, in Austin's words, No God damned sense!
      If power armor can shrug off bullets and lasers alike, how does a Stingwing manage to penetrate it with a stinger made of material weaker than bullets, and less velocity?
      I'd just narrowly survived getting in a crossfire between Raiders and Super Mutants, my X-01 armor was mildly damaged, I'm looting corpses, and get mobbed by a swarm of stingwings and my health plummets *FAST* due to all the poison I'm being injected with *THROUGH* Mark V X-01 armor pieces.

    A big difference though is total weight. The lifting attachments are fairly light so they can be worn and moved without too much issue. The power suit in fallout would way over 300 kilo's minimum and could easily be over 500. That is a lot of mass to accelerate to stop.

    A lot of people say that “power armour was made to be tank like and give a bunch of protection” but it was really made to allow individual soldiers to carry heavy weapons. This makes me think about exoskeletons just with some armour slapped on.

      It also weighed so much the man wearing it could barely move. It should also be noted that the Imperial German Army put forth the idea that if some sort of /powered frame/ could be devised, it could be wrapped in heavy armor and enable a soldier to bear heavy weapons while still being mobile. based on LFTR reactors it is possible to reduce the power plant enough in size to power the suit, heat shielding would be the only need but based on the reactor design for the Cadillac thorium car one could use and adapt that same design to power the suit. power units of that type would further reduce the weight felt, could run an air filtration system, power reactive armor, and never run out of power.

    I'd like to mention one of the biggest things I feel was overlooked: the fact that the individual inside the armor doesn't actually touch the ground. [S]He is on raised platforms if you look closely without leg armor on (so just the base power armor skeleton). This leads me to believe that the wearer would have a *much* higher weight carrying capacity. The arms work the same way as the foot placement does, with the user grabbing an inside (its like a thing you grab with your hand but I don't know of a single word that describes it). Anyway, I felt that was kind of a big hole that was overlooked, that's all.

  • @mitchdevries6628
    @mitchdevries6628 7 років тому

    I was looking into this a while back and the biggest set backs that I found were jointed movements, such as shoulders and hips because those are internalized movements where the suit would need to be external. Another one had something to do with spinal movements and flexibility as you somewhat mentioned. And the last and most important one is the Power source. You kind of glossed over the tethered suits, which is to say they work, but they need a type of power line connected to them. If I recall when I was looking it up they can only currently supply enough power for maybe 30-2hrs of untethered movement. But thats not counting all the weight and such brought on by armor plates that would be added. But, much like you I am really excited about the future prospects of such tech, even though it will almost certainly never be something citizens can get our hands on.

    You don't know enough about armor or small arms to make this video. AR500 Level 3+ armor can take 100s of shots from a 7.62x39 chambered arm and be nearly unaffected. Ceramic armor is/was only used for wieght savings as a full set of AR500 level 3+ armor (Front, back, sides, thighs and other small plates) would weigh 60 lbs and preclude the ability to carry any other needed gear. Power armor would avoid this entirely as it holds it own weight. Hell you can probably build the whole suit out of Class 4+ plates and not run into problems.

    A big issue with kevlar as well is that it's flexible. Even if it stops the round it won't stop the force of impact. With pistols where the energy is fairly low this isn't a huge deal but rifles have a lot more power. Even if a kevlar vest stops the bullet it will still likely break ribs.

Webbing, the straps that soldiers are often seen wearing, redistributes the load of items on it, allowing you to carry more for longer.

    Fallout 4 power armour isn't realistic. For the amount of armour mounted on the chassis it should deflect most small to medium rifle-grade cartridges, and at a bare minimum stop a large rifle cartridge within. However, yes, even after a while it will still break. A lot slower with the small-to-medium cartridges and a lot faster with the large cartridges. I'm no armoursmith (yet) but I can deduce that much. I'll edit this when I have more updates, which will come with more information of different types.

    What power armor really brings to the table, as far as military employment, is that your soldiers to not only repel rounds and carry heavier loads, but also carry heavier weapons. That, I think, could turn the tide of a battle or a war if power armor is widely issued. At a 17:1 felt weight reduction, you could carry a Dillan minigun and enough ammo to make it practical to employ.

    One thing you failed to mention was how the operator would see outside the suit. mini cameras are getting better all the time, but I think there will be a real need for the old 'mark one eyeball' through transparent mediums.
    This being so, I think that a multi layered 'wafer' would be used as a viewing block for powered armor suits. Probably with a thick metal, or metal and composite face guard that could be retracted to enable the operator to see out through the viewing block.
    The viewing block would combine the best anti-ballistic polymers, Shatter resistant Glass, and (this is actually a real thing) Transparent Aluminum. The largest piece of TA I've heard of was 4 by 6 inches, and 1 inch thick. The report I read on this development was over two decades ago, so the manufacturing process may allow larger sizes by now.
    In any case, even a 4x6x1 inch slab, mated to the above materials, would be an effective 'view port' out of the armored suit, and still deflect or absorb all pistol rounds, and most rifle rounds (although, I still think a Barret .50 Cal would penetrate).
    a relatively thick layer of 'anti-spalling' film would keep glass shards from impacting the operator's eyes, thus preventing blinding. Such is common these days as a film layer on Cel phones.
    Just a few thoughts,

    Kevlar is actually capable of taking rifle rounds depending on how tightly woven it is and how many layers you have to slow down the rounds. However kevlar is mixed with Boron Carbide. Which is that ceramic you are referring too. Which is capable of stopping high velocity rifle bullets. So modern body armor works fairly well for what it is designed for.

    The thing about power armor as showed on one of the video's made on this channel before, we would not get the shock absorption from a fall but other then that it will be capable of tons of other stuff mostly. Carbon Mesh made with Resin is also possible to be better in time. Its the same stuff they make many race cars of, and its on step down to the type of stuff they say will be used to build future spaceships and stations and other things. Able to take 56,000 per square inch and its very light, and it can stop bullets without issue, and it can take the effect of 200 mile an hour crashes and other stuff, and is often used to make the pods in indie cars just as its used for its body. The seams mostly have rubber or other stuff, that would help and would save space and be easy for someone to replace.

    Using an "exclusive" T-60 power armor as an example to determine a damage treshhold, in a game, which makes power armor to be made out of paper and which makes "power armor" available to use to any frickin' raider (who yesterday only could hunt the molerats) is a bad idea. What a shame.
    Also, if we start to talk about lore, then lore-wise T-60 and X-01 should not exist. Again, a shame that the author did not bother to research the earlier power armors. This video is not augmented.

    • @Starcrafter23
      @Starcrafter23 7 років тому +2

      X-01 is from FO2... and since Bethesda OWNS the lore, they can change it however they like, so if they say that T-60 makes sense lore-wise, it does.

    • @xelgringoloco2
      @xelgringoloco2 7 років тому +1

      T-60 I agree on, but isnt the X-01 just a rename of the Advanced Power Armour MK II? So isn't it consistant with lore?

    • @CheffBryan
      @CheffBryan 7 років тому +1

      Like it matters; none of the Fallout games take into account the Mk II Browning .50 cal, the most common munition round the world over. With all of the AFVs laying around in FO4, mounted .50's should exist in the game, and good luck surviving the first round of a crewserve weapon, when you can't last for more than a single clip from an AK-47.
      Buuut it's a video game, can't expect reality to hold sway.

    For power armour i feel taking a look at late Medieval armour and Tank armour is a wise thing to examine since in late medieval armour you see an involvement of spaced armour which evolved to become more ergonomic for the wearer improving the protection from projectiles mean while also allowing it to be used against melee weaponry as well it could of course also be used for non combat uses.

    Handguns, in general, are not a smaller caliber than rifles. The one used in your example , the 7.62 mm is a smaller caliber than the most commonly used handgun caliber, the 9mm.

    My level IIIA AR500 armor has taken literally 90+ rounds of FMJ 7.62x54R and higher, dead on. I completely and utterly fail to understand why power armor couldn't be made of such a material.
    Then again, this is a game/fantasy universe, so, meh.

    It's worth noting that resistance-wise, an equivalent-rated steel plate does have longevity advantages over its ceramic counterpart. Namely, it's less likely to fracture upon impact, or suffer accidental damage. That said, they're generally heavier for the same level of protection, and they tend to "explode" the bullets that hit them, rather than catch them the way ceramic does. This causes shrapnel and spall to shatter outwards from the impact site as the bullet fragments. Not so much an issue for someone in fully-contained power armor, but potentially deadly for someone wearing it in a vest.

Nor are they interested what one person has to say on what an entire business, as that is what most youtube channels run by multiple people function as, should do with their future, especially when that future is based on nothing more than "they sorta make similar content maybe".

    Hello, I'm new to this channel and I absolutely love the content you create. I have always been a mega-fan of the Crysis series because it's just so badass. My favorite armor ever is the Nanosuit 2.0. I am utterly infatuated with the science behind the Nanosuit and I wish I could have a Nanosuit just as much as a lightsaber. I would absolutely appreciate it if you were to research the armor and see if it is technically possible to make a Nanosuit. Keep up the good work, Austin!

    well to be honest, it would be a mechanized frame covered with armour plates, which would not stop radiation unless it was led lined, and would not work against lasers which would just heat the armour up, it would be a totally bullet proof armour suit, but the first issue would really be power sources

    pre war T51 is the best. It was designed to protect the wearer from literally any conciviable from of weaponry. In the WMD department the helmet and sealed environment will filter air making the wearer impervious to both gass and bio weapons. then as discussed in the video it also has the benefit of blocking radiation. as for conventional weapons it's thick ass metal plates for kinetic and special coating to be used to disperse energy weapons hitting it. It also looks awesome too
