      +CJ Dodge Sure. Don't go on other people's channels to try to get viewers. (Its kind of rude.) Just make videos on something not many people do. (So not minecraft) Be unique, and try to add to whatever community is in a certain game. Then you might be able to get someone who's a bit more popular to give you credit for you contributions. That's a much better way to get yourself out there than asking people to check out your videos on someone else's channel. Just remember "If you build a better mousetrap the world will beat a path to your door."

      Ironically, Borderlands has at least a hand-wave of a reason for it: Pandora is a relatively small planet with lower gravity than Earth. Which is why you fall slower and can handle the impact without damage.
      Also because Borderlands is less about realism and more about action.

    Dear Austin.
    I have a question for you. Not that you’ll likely see this since this video is nearly 4 years old and you have better thing to do anyway, but after reading like ten comments I decided nobody important has brought it up. First let me qualify my question with an observation I had while upgrading my power armor. When looking through the leg upgrades I noticed one was to add explosive vents to the legs, it increases damage to nearby enemies when falling from great heights and adds an explosion effect when you land. Now I’m no expert on explosions or collisions but when cars hit something at high speeds there doesn’t seem to be a super impactful shockwave that spreads from the impact in a radius. So this got me thinking that the energy from landing isn’t getting absorbed by the armor but dispersed by some magic device in the legs of the armor that takes all that kinetic energy and pushes it out in a explosion thus sparing the poor squishy innards of the individual within the suit and not sparing anybody unfortunate enough to be standing within some radius of said falling individual. Anyway my question is: Is this actually possible. And if so just how much damage should this blast actually be doing to the surrounding areas. It seems like it would be more than the game shows but I’m not informed enough to figured it out myself so if by some miracle of fate you see this, maybe you can.
    -Sincerely Jarod

    • @captainxeno8202
      @captainxeno8202 4 роки тому +8

      Not to mention the fact that at no matter what height you fall from or how fast you're falling it still creates the same effect, it would make more sense the lower the elevation the weaker the impact and if you jump off a tall building or something it should do the explosive vent effect. Then again this is the game that has a nuclear explosion in a grenade and some ballistic weapons have a legendary effect that lets them shoot plasma sooo.

    • @DaisFlaque
      @DaisFlaque 4 роки тому +10

      The exterior of the suit does not stop the interior (you) from instant deceleration.. even if the suit could disperse its g forces.. it couldn't stop yours.. as you are a separate entity from the suit itself. Simple answer: no. It would not help at all, not in the slightest. Because you are not the suit, you are a squishy sack of meat stopping nearly instantly. Hope this answers it for you.
      Sincerely Dais F.

A way the F-16 combats this is by angling the seat, meaning the blood isn’t being pulled away from your head as hard as a normal seat would entail. Actually, when you are moving forwards or backwards, G forces aren’t a problem. It’s when there is potential to pull blood away from the brain, or surge blood into the brain.

      Well, considering that maybe the batteries aren't 100% percent efficient from the start, the degradation of not being used for hundreds or years, and the fact that power armor would use a lot of energy could explain that.

      There's no excuse for any bit of military hardware that can only last 30 minutes in the field. That's fucking ridiculous, it would never get accepted. I preferred the old lore wherein power-armor, essentially, never run out of power(because it had a fucking fusion core, in it, it was powered by the same thing that powers the sun).

    • @brownking96
      @brownking96 8 років тому +1

      Keep in mind this is 30 minutes in real world time. If we take the game's time then each minute in our world is an hour in fallout 4. So that means power armor can last 30 hours on a single core, pretty impressive considering that they've been laying around for 210 years.

    Short hopping the jetpack before landing should reduce the impact and Gs enough so that the PA's leg hydraulics don't instantly give way and hopefully the reduced G force won't turn you into tomato salsa.

    You know how there's those new backpacks that suspend themselves on your back, taking the weight off of you? What if the frame connects to the armor in a similar fashion? You're basically floating inside of the power armor so when you land instead of you taking the force the frame moves inside the armor, sort of like absorbing the shock.

      Yeah, except the game will not allow you to decelerate if you're already falling. If you moving downward, with a jet pack, and try to slow your fall, it does exactly nothing.

    • @Leongon
      @Leongon 6 років тому +2

      The jet pack in the game barely can lift the armor from standing on the ground. If you already are falling it's really unlikely it's short and weak thrust will decelerate you enough back from terminal velocity to survive.

  • @Paragon..
    @Paragon.. 8 років тому +161

    Power Armor has kinetic servos in the legs. When you get inside it you take a step up, your feet never really touch the ground, you stand above the armors ankles.
    have you ever dropped a phone and it breaks? But if you get a case for it and drop it from the same height it will be fine even if does weigh more now. Case takes the kinetic force and the padding dampens that force on the phone. Power armor feet are basically hydraulic airbags and the person inside the frame is basically your phone in a case.

    • @Fordragon
      @Fordragon 8 років тому +65

      False. Your character's body is still decelerating at a far higher rate than can be survived. There is no way a human would survive that fall, especially repeatedly/discounting freak instances.

    Pneumatic shock absorption. That's the key, as its mention in one of the leg mods. It uses the compression of air at the moment of impact to decelerate your body and suit during the fall. WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY.

    • @nicolomatias2223
      @nicolomatias2223 8 років тому +8

      You have no idea what you're talking about. How the fuck would you decrease the acceleration of your body? Those pneumatic fucktards are nothing to the forces you would experience during and after your fall. They won't be enough. When you land, almost every single bone in your body would disintegrate, blood vessels would pop, and don't even get me started on the power armor crumbling on top of you.

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 8 років тому +5

      Distance of those shock absorbers wont be nearly enough to make one god damn difference, if we talk about terminal velocity. Sure it could so something in high of small building, but essentially will still take damage and die.
      Just fact that your brain is swimming inside of your skull and moment you hit the ground, your brain will be smashed into your skull (brain damage or death), cause that too need to stop from that speed. So yeah...
      Essentially humans are fragile as fuck and there is currently nothing we can do about that.. possible in the future, but not in our life time we see cyborgs that can withstand such forces with their computer based brains.
      God damn bethesda.. why you didnt add rockets/jets on the suit to cushion the fall..-.-

      1: Eh...it could be excessively powerful? *shrug* if that's the case then it sure, as fuck, isn't modeled in the game.
      When I heard "pneumatic shock absorption", I immediately thought of the suit blowing air in to the ground just before it landed - it could create a dense bubble of air, creating a wider window of deceleration.
      2: Fallout physics are different. Our laws don't, really, apply in full there(I mean...radiation makes you immortal...or it just turns you in to a centaur).

    Let's not forget that Proctor Ingram (The character) lost her legs due to a fall in Power Armor. Yet we the player, as stated in the video, take no fall damage when wearing power armor. Think about it.

  • @MCPunk55
    @MCPunk55 6 років тому

    Two things... first, while in game you're not required to wear it, there is a special jumpsuit every Power Armor unit has to wear while in Power Armor. That suit Danse is wearing? That's it. The same suit the guy in the intro video is wearing. Second, the frame. Exploding vents was the biggest hint for me to understand it. The VENTS in conjunction with the hydraulic system of THE FRAME, expel the excessive fore on landing and evenly distribute the rest. That pose your character assumes when falling? Soldiers are trained to fall from heights and land without damaging their legs and feet and the secret is in the way you land. That's also why Power Armor suits don't have... shoes, for lack of a better word. Imagine a cloud of steam coming out of the joints and feet of the frame when it lands, then replace it with G Force. That's why the pieces that form the armor don't crack either. The frame handles pressure and weight distribution and the jumpsuit you should be wearing makes sure you're not going to have a heart attack when you land. Can we build something that advanced in our world? No. At least not yet.

    Seeing as how a power armor suit is on average 2 feet taller than the people in them, and apparently the power armor suits cushioning pistons in the legs, I’m assuming that even though some of that height is taken up by armor and the feet, there’s still plenty of space to install shocks that will absorb the fall. The lore does state that they would airdrop in power armor, with or without a pilot inside them.

  • @ShiningDarknes
    @ShiningDarknes 7 років тому +20

    Ah see, now we know where all that energy from the fusion cores actually goes: It isn't to power the armor, no sir, it is to counter all that kinetic energy caused from impacts/deceleration. How? No clue, but that is certainly where all that energy is going because it certainly is not all getting used to move around.
    Oh wait! Idea: the suit actually creates some sort of suspension field that actually maintains your internal organs suspension in your cavities by stimulating the fluids and structures in the body that keep your organs where they are supposed to be. Sort of like how you can run an EM field over magnetic objects to make them move (obviously over-simplifying but you get the point). If their scientists could figure out how to make compact FUSION happen and mass-produce said units I am sure they could come up with a way to generate a field that counters the negative effects of deceleration on organic entities with fluid cavities that contain delicate organs. Such a continuous field would of-course require a huge amount of power to maintain thus the reason for a power source capable of powering large building being deleted in mere hours if not minutes of continuous use.
    Ta-da! Fixed.

    The most curious thing is that fall damage negation is only part of the game, but canonically, power armor doesn't protect you. Graham lost his legs due to a bad fall, and according to the Prydwen terminal, an initiate tried jumping from the Mass Fusion rooftop, resulting in damaged power armor and a meat smoothie. In fact, when you arrive at the Prydwen, a scribe is fixing a power armor leg, apparently damaged because the knight decided to kick a Mirelurk xD.

    We seem to forget that we're basically falling constantly and it's the ground under our feet that prevents us from moving downward. The fact that the apparent motion stops doesn't mean that we've stopped falling: if the counter weren't there, the apparent motion would just resume.

    I did the research, And I have determined that the lightest commercially available slug for a 308 winchester (presumably the .308 round used in the Fallout franchise) that I could find reliable data for is 110 grains. That bullet, fired from a 24 inch barrel would generate exactly 3,316.34 Joules of energy at 100 yards. The most common bullet weight for .308 winchester 150 grains, which generates a force of 3,600 Joules. The most that T-51 power Armor can sustain is 2500 Joules, meaning that any one with a decent .308 hunting rifle and some ammunition could easily kill a soldier in power armor in ONE shot to the chest. Eat that, Bethesda! Kind of a fatal flaw, considering that the most common round for sniper rifles and medium machine guns to be chambered is 7.62x51mm NATO, which is the military variant of .308 and those would probably be the best weapons to use against power armour.

      I think of it similar to an early tank. Still vulnerable to Something bigger than what others are used to but still a huge threat to anyone who doesn't have the adequate power to take them down. Not to mention it's made harder when you remember that power armor pets you fire a minigun from the hip, if they could even get close enough to the soldiers in power armor then they could probably do something about them, but when you have 5 minigun trained on your position things get much harder

      @skullpoker69 8 років тому +9

      Everything you do that uses AP also uses up your fusion core. You can fast-travel, run, swim, jump, and fire from the hip forever and never use up your FC. Sprinting, VATS, Jet Pack, Power attacks, and Steady aiming are all going to use that thing up. The more AP you burn, the faster your core goes. I think I held my aim steady for the full AP bar and burned about half of my FC, you can burn a core up in about a minute this way.
      If you use AP a lot, go for the upgrades that reduce AP cost. Those are the Optimized Bracers and Optimized legs. Double up on both and a Legendary weapon with reduced VATS cost to get the most out of your FC.

That makes even less sense than no falling damage.
