Before you whine about the lame audience (which unfortunately more than 50% of the commenters focus on). This was not a metal festival. It was mixed and I think Meshuggah was the only metal band present. There were a bunch of hard core fans up front (including me) who loved the band and knew all the songs, but for me it was not only about listening to the band. I also wanted to see them perform, and so did many of my friends. Banging and moshing is a great way to show appreciation for the band but you miss out a lot on what's happening on stage, and as a musician myself I wanted to study their playing. Behind us were people who didn't know the band and no one can blame them. They were not into metal. I'm sure they were impressed anyway.
The band´s performance is awesome! The festival was a disaster when about 5.000 attendants were expected while about 400 showed up. That's why you see people with orange "staff shirts" in the audience. Many bands canceled. Right before the show Meshuggah had to deal with payment issues with the festival organisation and I think they finally entered the stage without knowing if they were gonna get paid or not. It was however solved in the end.
It was so heavy, no one knew what was happening.
ohhh i don't know there's quite a few in that crowd that know EXACTLY what's happening
Keep in mind that in 1996 bands like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Deicide, etc existed. So I'm sure these kids heard heavy music live before. Lol.
@@stefanomagaddino632 yea but this is different heavy... It's really new for that time ..
@@omnicide3251 I don't know man, Death metal is heavier, Meshuggah just tunes so fucking low.
@@omnicide3251 also if you want some really good and fucking heavy extreme metal kind of similar to Meshuggah (but not really) check out Strapping Young Lad, especially their album City.
This is just like when marty mcfly plays "johnny be good" ahead of its time and no one could understand the name of the game
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet, your kids are gonna love it." Love that movie
For real. People didn't realize that Meshuggah would influence Djent, Death Metal, modern Black Metal and Metal as a whole for decades. Way fucking ahead of their time. Glad to know artistry like this gets paid it's dues eventually.
Saw them support Machinehead the year before. The pit was crazy. So intense.
Imagine if Marty walked up and started future breed machine
Literally was going to post "ahead of its time" so have a like
This video is some serious metal history. Thank you for sharing!
So true. It had everything you could ask for: Heavy Riffs, CP guitar solos, good ol´ hockey choirs (and shirts) and little bit of haare krishna.
Seriously. This is when Korn was blowing up, in addition to numerous other bands not nearly as innovative and forward thinking as the almighty meshuggah.
His vocals sound exactly the same to this day...fucking insane
I thought that on the first song XD
They were more dynamic back in the day!
Exatamente!
Yes! I get angry when I see people complaining that he lost his voice. They got better overtime!
@@ArcticChonk yeah when you are young that's kinda common.
Only one person clapped when he said "Future Breed Machine"......... 😳 different times
Now you hardly hear that song live !
The way Jens introduced it. 🤣
Nu ska vi spela en hårdrockslåt.
(Now we're going to play a hardrock tune)
What's the weird 'my first guitar riff' he does at the start of that? Just messing around?
I'm from the small town and the school where the festival was held. Organizer went bankrupt after the first festival. I think they needed 5000 guests and there were 4-500 guests. You can also see that many in the audience have red shirts with Staff on them. The organizers became indebted with millions.
Because everyone was going ape shit over Machine Head and Pantera ruled the world.
Little did haake know... drummers would thrive to emulate his style decades later.
Thrive?
*strive
If by “thrive” you mean “brutally struggle”, then yes
Maybe he has a lisp
@@gcharocks hahaha deserves way more upvotes
The first time I saw Meshuggah was completely by accident when they toured with TOOL. That was a show that changed me forever.
When was that?
Lateralus era... Google will have better details
Same here!
YEA I SAW THEM WHEN THEY OPENED UP FOR TOOL. THEY PLAYED SUM COLLAGE ARENA. IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN DURHAM N C. THERE SOUND WAS LOW COMPAIRED TO TOOL. TOOL WAS SOO LOUD WITH TREBLE. IT WAS TO FN HARD TO LISTEN TO. BUT WAS A GOOD SHOW NO MATTER. xDx
2002, I went for Meshuggah tho
The audience simply had no idea what was about to take place.... Afterwards... They still had no idea...
I’m gonna cry. Crazy how ahead of their time these guys are. If this is considered heavy by today’s standard I can’t even imagine how the crowd must’ve felt
I think you're stretching it. There has always been mad hard stuff, just not in the mainstream and not as easily accessible as today. Some namedropping... Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten, Merzbow... and some of Lou Reeds more bizarre work. :D However, I'm not aware of rythms like these. But what do I know? :D
It was 1996 not the 1800's 🤣
Probably a little overwhelming but also intriguing. Gotta start somewhere igniting that spark in the metal heads brain about much greater music out there
@@jorgendnilsson none of these are heavy
@@ajp8025 Oh give me a break, Merzbow is insane. Go see him live and you'll change your mind. It almost rearranged my synapses.
Fun fact: This is only 26 years after Black Sabbath's debut
Ok thats mind bending
And this video is 26 years ago from today.
@@joshansharma4244 Wtf that's crazy. I didn't notice that. Meshuggah were way ahead of their time
@@joshansharma4244 metal mind warp
@@kasogamer the great ones always are.
1996 and the audio quality is better than 95% of live videos on YT from 2015-2020...not to mention this is the third time I've watched this entire video since i found it just after the start of COVID quarantine...THANK YOU for the upload and obv THANK YOU to Meshuggah
General public give no fucks about audio quality beyond a basic lack of distortion so phone companies always cut costs on internal microphones. Insanely high quality cameras, stupidly crap microphones.
In 1996, people recorded on analoge tapes in the video cameras. The tape gives a "natural" compression on the audio recorded. That`s why so many old recordings have great sound. And because the possibility to control the rec volume on smart phones wasn`t available until recently, most amateur footage of concerts from ca 2000 until 2015ish is distorted and sound horrible.
Lmao big true 😂 It's friggin weird. Truly a moment in time
I love how Mårten just walks up to the sound booth 😂
A true professional
The sound quality for this type of band in a video from 96 is super incredible.
Especially for the camcorder. Usually when played back it sou ded like a blender F ing a lawnmower lol
Probably dubbed over with the audio the PA recorded would be my guess why it sounds so good, that or just a really good mic filter
@@HamsterWheelGamingor because of his fking insane rhytmic riffs which are on point!
Part of that is probably because they're so freaking tight
@3:25 Some guitarists point to their guitar and do the thumbs up motion, Marten takes a walk all the to the back of the crowd in the middle of a song to have a conversation with the sound person at the sound booth; when Meshuggah goes, they go all in.
That is so amazing xD He's just like: Hey dude fix the shit and walks back like nothing has happened.
checkin' the sound! a true slave to his craft :D
The only reason I use a wireless is so I can go check out what front of house is hearing and making sure the engineer knows what he's doing lol
@@ayewhaddupdoe good thing you do that... But this looked really menacing 😳
Or he just bought a wireless. Every guitarist does things when they get a wireless to show off they have a wireless.
lol the crowd back then didnt know how to headbang to Meshuggah's ''4/4''
Like lol
No thats just swedes. They never move at shows
Evan Hopper depends on which kind of concert it is
@@Lukas-cg3ms fair enough
old meshuggah did have odd times
Honestly, this set is amazing. People at the show, 25 years later, probably still have no idea how big of an influence this group would have on modern metal. They're truly ahead of their time.
Nah we knew back then too, it was already a thing.
They do the soundcheck immediately before the show for crying out loud!
Audience: How metal will this be🤷
Meshuggah: Yes.
I absolutely adore this era of the band. And yeah, this right here is music history. Man, just listen to how good they sound! it is insane.
Destroy Erase Improve might be my new fav after watching this.
yeah it is still their best work imo.
Music history, are you dump, stupid, or just crazy? Music history 🤮You don't know what you talking about...
Agreed
Am i the only person whos going to comment on how clean/modern the guitar and bass tone from 1996 is? Its 2020 and Im blown away.
yea listening to dei specifically makes me feel like im in the future
Wanna hear the mad part? They were using Mesa’s in the studio in this era, but what you’re listening to is a Marshall Valvestate😂😂
This pre dates the Axe Fx Standard by 10 years,Cliff hadn't even conceived of the concept of Fractal audio yet.
The only extreme metal band with that tone during that time MAYBE i would say fear factory. But this is still super heavy for it's time for sure.
@@FurnaceFuneral84 yeah, that’s true. Demanufacture and Obsolete sounded huge, guitar-wise
Listen: I give the crowd mercy here. If you read the influences of this band from their Destroy Erase Improve album, they list Earth Wind and Fire as the FIRST one, then the obvious Metallica/Slayer/ etc, Primus, then they list movies of that day too. No one in 96 was going to see this band coming, or growing to be as popular as they are now. This is indeed INCREDIBLE history, solid sound, and honestly a typical performance for Meshugah. These men do not disappoint, no matter which era.
Where in their music can you find EWaF influences? Hahahha (not saying you're lying, but that's just weird and funny)
@@chadmarx7718 They also site movies from that era. Influence is an interesting thing. As for EWaF, definitely the emphasis on the 1 unifying everything, and the way the riffs carry over the bar - listen to September. The verse riffs, and horn riffs later in the song. The riffs tend to syncopate for 2 bars at a time. Meshugah just took that idea WAY further, and their riffs syncopate for 4 bars before coming back on the 1. Thomas mentioned that what they do isn't new. Meshugah's approach to that idea is def unique, and THE thing that makes them stand out. They stretch their riffs out for 8 bars and sometimes 16 bars on Obzen.
Interesting read but it's Meshuggah*
@@RasberrySkittle good looking out. I have to spell the Hebrew words correctly! I think I've been spelling it with one G for ten years!
holygroove2 best and most underrated band in metal history. I've listened to them since 2002 religiously and I am more a fan everyday of these gentlemen. True talent and vision
man this is fucking amazing.... the sound quality is like insane for 96????
something about Fredrik spinning in blissful circles with a coca cola shirt on in 1996
I've never laughed at a live concert the way I did at the beginning of Humuliative before. Fredrik diving onto the floor, Marten walking through the crowd, Seriously metal as fuck.
12:50 ...silence and the scream
he felt that breakdown coming haha
Ladies and djentlemen, Meshuggah!
Future Breed Machine has always been my favorite song from them.
Classical musician here. I love how they use different tuplet combinations and polyrhythms.
Of course they were not headbanging, they're counting
Beyond comprehension at that time!
hell, it still is today!
90s Meshuggah was so fucking good.
Jazzy, proggy, brutal and raw.
No matter how many years I listen to this band, they never stop to amaze me.
Right from the start, they have occupied a league so far beyond their contemporaries, it's absolute madness.
Dude Meshuggah is so awesome for performing without even knowing if they were gunna get paid! And they still played their heart out
That's every upcoming band nowadays, dude.
They just love playing this stuff. You can tell how addicted to their own style they are and it's remarkable
That would have been the majority of how bands were in the 80's 90's.. paid shit, if at all, but still played their heart out. Nothing special.
They got paid. It's not the US
Sad to think that someone on that day probably went home after what they thought was a weird band and show, had some dinner and went to bed that night and never looked into them ever again and not knowing how much of an influence these dudes have been today since that day in '96 💔
They're most likely just chilling at home today with their kids, having a nice breakfast and working 9-5, yet every now and then think about how weird that day was and pondering what happened to those weird dudes.
That's a beautiful sentiment. I like to believe they were so shocked they went home and discovered this band and have been #1 fans since.
@@caspian3755 what are you on about
This one
Suspiciously specific
Anyone in Sweden who listen to metal and goes to any metal concerts knows about Meshuggah nowadays
Lol this reminds me of the time I skipped channels when Shed came on MTV because I didnt like it. Then a few years later I discover them properly with their video for new millenium cyanide christ.
After reading the description, 25 years later, we thank the metal gods they took the stage. Where the hell did this video come from? Amazing!!!
I think what blows my mind the most is how this was 1996 when Jens was basically 30 years old, they'd only really started making music for like five years as Meshuggah but even in their 50's they're continuing strong as one of the most influential metal bands of the 21st century. We need to keep this music alive even after they've all retired - which doesn't look to be soon. We need people who can keep this music alive through performance.
Their performances are eternalised, of course; but it shouldn't stop when they can't keep going. Thanks for uploading the whole show
that's why I LOVE METAL it shows Age ain't shit if you have the spirit . Certain artists are like Fine Wine Meshuggah, Gojira, and Deftones are in that category . hell even Slipknot isn't really metal but they still practice their craft at an amazing level for their age.
IIRC, Danny Carey was already in his 30s when Tool released their first demo.
It’s never too late!
1987
Jens' Hare Krishna days.
Negative, it's Floki's brother
lol😂😂😂😂
Lmfaoooooooo xDxD
Торденталь уже тогда играл на 7 струнах.
И вцелом группа уже тогда играла безупречно.
Респект за видео, отличное качество и ностальгия.
It's amazing how the whole world knows about them now and their music from '96 sounds like it was made in 2021.
The greatest thing I’ve stumbled on in a while
Imagine hearing future breed machine in 1996
Ok - Jens is screaming actual pitches for Suffer in Truth...even back in this day, they had ridiculous talent and used it to the fullest. Soul Burn and Vanished 🤘🤘🤘
Very true and Tomas even here his double bass is so accurate.
@@sticksman7819 This used to be the only band he's played in. So he's developed his skills in a unique way. He's always been a good drummer IMO.
24:25 Tomas and Fredrik's interesting vocal improv.
12:41 Sickening is one of my favorite songs with Meshuggah, very underrated in my opinion!
The whole None EP is fantastic. Just groove after groove
I've been listening since 97 and I finally get to see them this year.
Me too. At Royal Albert Hall. Can't wait.
This recording of the audio is fantastic! What a treat!
25:10 Was Fredrik playing the Stage Clear music from Super Mario Bros?
Such an insanely crisp performance and the preserved audio & vid quality is superb.
Haha, good catch, that's totally what he is playing. (or at least attempts to)
Wow, crazy how his voice stays the same after all these years. Class is permanent.
Yeah you think he would get better and progress over time, hey?
@Benjamin I hear ya lol. While the rest of the band kept getting more and more out of the box, the vocalist has done the same shit for over 20 years
He's boring as hell.
First time in a Meshuggah pit 20 years ago my nose broke, like 4 years after this show. People’s ears and minds broke at this one. Wow thanks for the footage.
Jens has one of the most powerful sounding growls in all of metal.
Screams*
@@catchthirtythree growls* there is clearly growls in here. While his screams are legendary, not really what he was talking about.
This is the reason why I am so much scared of him
You gents ever listen to "dead"?
what he is like the most cookie cutter extreme metal vocalist around. He is the weakest link in Meshuggah, by far. Vocals are a common problem in Prog bands. Why do they always suck???
Maaaan known or not I don't know how one can stand so still at a Meshuggah show. And this set list!!!
This is a sacred artifact from the church of metal! 🤘 I feel like I just discovered the holly grail. Thank you
This is absolute treasure. Thanks for uploading. So ahead of their time. They STILL are.
It's amazing to watch and listen to. Very young and full of energy, such a raw sound. Then to see how refined and professional they have become all these years later. Very thankful someone captured this and posted it.
Started with their "Nothing" album, then I just had to explore their discography. Amazing throughout. Long live Messhuggah!
Jesus, these guys crushed live. Still do, but the speed, energy and headbanging back then was something else. And what a setlist!
This is mind blowing, thank you for this.

This is magnificent, thank you for sharing. I love this old RAW sound. Amazing.
This truly is the power of Meshuggah live shows to this day. No matter how loud, complex or convoluted their songs might get, you never stop hearing each instrument individually. Nothing ever muddles, every tiny bit enjoyed to the max, a true audiophile jerkfest 🤤 Kudos to the sound technicians as well who make this possible. Have enjoyed every show they've played, and looking forward to be engulfed in their new inventions 🥳
