If it hasn't been mentioned, one of the reasons the fight scenes were so good is they were choreographed by Jackie Chan's stunt team.

Yuen Wah was part of the Opera group that JC was in and he is ranked senior or Big Brother like Samo Hung. Yuen Wah was the Landlord in KungFu Hustle which has a poster on the wall when Shangchi was packing his bags for Macau.

Wenwu was such a great "villain". Although he really didn't feel like a villain to me. Everything he did was for love and ended up sacrificing himself for his son. Tony Leung played him so well, he is a legend! I also love the fact that as they say in the movie Shang Chi was the product of both his parents and they tell it in the fight scenes which I absolutely love. The way he defeated his dad using his mothers softer fighting style but also ended up beating the giant monster with his fathers more stronger moves. It's really great visual storytelling.

There are tons of legendary Hong Kong actors in this, including Tony Leung. I think for me, the heart and most compelling part of the movie is the tragedy of Wen Wu. This felt like his story. You can see in his eyes his sorrow, like when he hears that "We needed you, and you chose those damn rings" and his tears and shaking his head when Shang said "I wish that were true". The dragon and soul sucker I could care less about. To me this was the story of a Father who wanted to be strong and love his family and did it in all the wrong ways. It was so human. The irrationality, lashing out blaming his son for his wife's death (even though I'm sure he didn't really feel that way all this time, would know better) Shang Chi blaming his dad, saying he's going to kill him, another irrational but very human reaction. My eyes sweat seeing him flash back to his son through the ages before he died.

As a little girl growing up in Korea, I always loved martial arts movies, but, as a child, I associated them as either the real action violent martial arts movies and, what I called "magic" martial arts movies, where they showed the more supernatural aspects of the artform. I LOVED magic martial arts, the flying, the superhero-ish jumps and moves, the manipulation of chi on one's environment, the "powers". For me, Shang-Chi was taking all the beauty and wonder of magic martial arts, and placing it within the MCU universe. I LOVED this movie, and I feel it's one of the more interesting ones, like Guardians of the Galaxy, like Doctor Strange. LOVED it.
And Katie especially, made it feel SO relatable. I AM Katie - the girl who moved to the US, whose parents were constantly speaking our native language to me, so I fully understood it on hearing, but I failed at actually speaking my first language due to repetitive and regular use of just English, and wanting to fit in with my American friends. A little overweight, a little weird, not at all athletic and sporty and able to fight, a little bit Americanized and not quite fitting in EITHER culture, and struggling to maintain equilibrium within that. Parents wanting me to achieve the success they KNOW I am capable of, but feeling out of place within that Asian parent dream. I related HARD to the Katie character, and I loved that she was kept as a vital part of the story, and not just a forgettable secondary character.
I ALSO loved how well the ladies got along, Katie, their friend, his aunt, and his sister. I'm tired of the "women can't get along and constantly hate each other" trope in movies, so this was absolutely refreshing to see them all exhibit such camaraderie. Oh, and can I say, Michelle Yeoh is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, at ANY age. And she still has moves - she can whip the ass of a person less than half her age. I can't get over the fact that she is damned near 60.

But in this movie, they allow for a natural healing to occur between the siblings who also understand that there is a common enemy between them and that they benefit aiding each other even when they have their differences. If Steven loves the fight between Shang-Chi’s parents, he’ll need to see Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon with Michelle Yeoh and Hero with Tony Leung and Jet Li.
Nikki loves the bus fight and she would love anything from Jackie Chan’s catalog because most of those fights were lift right off Chan’s moves especially with the jacket sequence. These credits go to Brad Alan, the first foreigner to be on Jackie Chan’s stunt team. He helped to coordinate Shang-Chi’s fight choreography before his untimely death.

Yes! Loved the black figures fighting in front of the pink billboard. Beautiful visual! The director talked about this scene. It has lots of CGI of course. Because the buildings were all glass so they had to make sure all the reflections on the glass and the helicopter were accurate. It's one challenging scene for them. But the bus scene tops it all. They spent a month shooting that bus scene.

It demonstrates earlier in the film with the dragon eye water scene that it shows him the way and when and what time the entire way opens up and stays open sooo that’s how they got all the cars through. There was no pocket. It’s fully open occasionally and he knew the day and time from their necklaces.

I love this movie so much. Oh and the reason his dad got his whole army though was because the day he came in he didn’t have to “stay in the pocket”. The water map showed the exact route in the maze to get into Talo. And it’s only open once a year. That’s why his dad took the pendants because he knew the day but he didn’t know the right path to take but then he knew both. Shang-Chi and the rest got though only because Moriss helped them stay in the pocket that you have to stay in the other days of the year. If you are not from Talo then you would never know how to find a way though. I also love the end battle! There is a quick cool detail at the end with Xialing and the dragon. They tag teamed with the rope to hold the soul sucker back so Shang could blow it up with the rings. That was so cool I have never seen something like that before!

Enjoy watching it with you two again. I watched it in the theater 3 times and I'm not even a Marvel fan. 😆 Several points no one has mentioned:
First, Marvel did the right thing to hire an Asian-American director and an Asian-American writer. They really brought authenticity to the project and avoided all the racial stereotypes in the original comics. Simu Liu had it in the contract that 30% of the crew behind the camera had to be Asians. The dirdctor Destin Daniel Cretton was an indie director of character drama. He never directed a big budget action film. He worked on the script with the writers. They wrote the family drama so well.
Second, because Cretton is Asian, he's familiar with Tony Leung, a MEGASTAR in Asia. He wanted Tony for the Wenwu role and Marvel didn't force someone more famous in the West on him. Cretton didn't think Tony would accept. Marvel being Marvel, they told him to try. Cretton talked Tony into accepting it. Tony only played a villain once previously (Lust, Caution by Ang Lee) in his long career. Tony Leung just added so much gravitas, charisma and acting to the film. I'm expecting he gets an Oscar or at least a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. If anyone wants to sample Tony Leung's films, HBO Max is showing his old films "In the Mood for Love", which won him Best Actor at Cannes Film Festival in 2000, and "Happy Together."
The style his mom and aunt practice is Tai Chi, a very fluid style of movement that focusing on directing the internal Chi (energy) outwsrd. That's how they moved the leaves around them. Shang Chi's name means "Elevating Energy" based on the Chinese characters.

I wish to hear your guys opinion on Tony Leung's performance here. I am definitely biased when it comes to this legendary actor as I have been following him since I was a little kid. Another cool fact, the stunt coordinator/choreographer in this movie was Australian martial artist Brad Allan. He worked and was part of Jackie Chan's stunt team for many years. You can definitely see Jackie's influence in the martial arts in the movie. Sadly, Brad died before the movie came out. The Man was only 48.

I love this movie so much! I am a martial artist, and Kung-Fu is in my base, and this got me excited. What Shang-Chi's mom showed, in the fight scene with the dad, is a presentation of the Dragon style of Shaolin, Hollywood version. What bothers me there, we can't fly! Enough with the flying, make it more realistic Hollywood. Other than that, the movie is incredible. The weapon you've seen, with the chain, is the Shaolin whip, as my Sifu called it, and it's very hard to control it. I am a big fan of Iron Palm training, I do it myself. Beyond the colorful name, it's not just the fist, it's the entire body, you create micro fractures. This is not just increasing power, it could be a life saving training, as your bones are more powerful, and much less easy broken. But the problem, the way it was shown here, you don't hit with full force, you hit with minimal force.

it warms my heart to see you both enjoy shang-chi so much 🧡 in case you didn’t know, the giant lion dogs from the ta lo village represent traditional chinese statues that are put in front buildings in real life - one lion dog protects the home from harmful spiritual influences, while the other protects the community from evil people. they’re an important symbol of chinese culture and mythology 😊
    much love!🌻

“I’m a try and grade this fight” in case you didn’t notice that’s the street vendor from Homecoming. The one that yells “ok Spider-Man! Do a flip!”
I’m surprised they didn’t recognize Emil Blonsky aka The Abomination from The Incredible Hulk movie
Seeing Trevor Slatery come back was such a trip. There were so many callbacks to super early MCU films I love it
Wong doing karaoke is the best mid credits scene ever!
