These are intertwined with scenes from the 1930's "Dust Bowl" when a large portion of the American mid-west became a desert when over use of the land & an extended drought brought about just horrible conditions
Part of it was everyone kept growing the same crops which stripped the earth of the same nutrients and minerals. It started happening a year before the stock market crash and which made things even worse. They didn't do much in the way of crop rotation or letting fields go fallow for a season.
Thank God we figured out how to avoid land destruction by agricultural rotation and other techniques- even tapping the aquifers would have saved them. What an awful time to have experienced. All they wanted was rain.
Same kind of thing, that happened here in Australia when the first English Settlers starting farming. They were used to thick loamy soil, it took generations to figure out the best ways to farm here.
Blake grew up in Oklahoma, that is where I am from too! He owns a 1,300 acre ranch in Oklahoma. The black and white film in the video are historical clips of the dust bowl in Oklahoma, the remainder of the video was filmed at his ranch.
The black and white bits are from the American Dust Bowl, where several states had such a drought that the ground had free reign basically, and stories of dust clouds tens of feet high would come rolling on the horizon and block out the sun like an eclipse!
This guy cleaned up here in Nashville at the CMA (Country Music Association) Awards two years ago when this song came out. I know it won song of the year and a few other awards as i remember Gwen sitting in the front row watching Blake. And you are correct they got engaged in Oct 2020...
I wasn't exposed to the country singers with strong voices growing up. I used to think most of it was monotoned singing. Thanks showing I was wrong. I like the country songs that you guys have been picking. Keep it guys!
I think lots of people only think of the strong nasal singing when they think of country. I used to think I hated country. Never listened to it until I started dating my husband 47 years ago. Now I love it... even the nasal ones. 😀 (also love rock, pop, classical, etc.- and if you add Tom MacDonald, I now can include rap)
I wonder if theres something to the simplicity of a country life that reminds us of childhood? Knowing you are your own man and your future is completely dependent on you and your kin.
For my Brit brothers and sisters, The line about being baptized in holy water and shine (moonshine) sippin' shine in the evenin', and dogs runnin' is about using dogs to aid in the fall hunting season. Edit: 4:26 If you are wondering why that fuel looks funny, it's red-dye diesel fuel. Tax free for farm and ranch use only. It's illegal to use it on the street here in the U.S.
My favorite memory with his song was when I was working in the northern Thailand mountain ranges on some missions/humanitarian work. There in the middle of the Thai jungle I heard this song playing from one of the Organizations pickups. Made my day lol.
Blake Shelton is what they call the "new breed" of country, though he has a much older sound on a good proportion of his work. Oklahoma born and bred, the newer parts of the video were shot on his property in Oklahoma, where he and Gwen are living at the moment, with the current situation, it's probably the safest place to be... He has a new single out called "Minimum Wage", it's not bad... Definitely agree with a lot of the comments, "Old Red" " Austin" and "Some Beach" are worth a listen... might wanna check out "Hillbilly Bone" duet with Trace Atkins, it's a fun one, and then you could probably try going down the rabbit hole that is T.A. some fun stuff, some serious stuff and bits in between...
Blake presents a DEEP part of the American Psyche.. that began with those who came here.. and still exists today. "We put it back in the plate" refers to the church plate. God Bless the Blokes!
Thank you for your reaction. Blake is the judge on the Voice and he got married to Gwen Stefani on July 3rd, 2021. You should check his other songs. They’re good.
This is a pump up song for me on the farm, liftin weights, even cleanin the house. And if it dont give ya the chills when you hear them words you aint listening to em
Hi from San Antonio tx.This is one of my favorite songs and I like to thank you for reacting to it. Can you react to Blake Shelton- Happy anywhere (Ft. gwen Stefani)
My grandma used to tell stories about the dust bowls back in the 20s and 30s. Lasted several days and if you were caught out in one you were as good as dead unless you were with your cattle or holding the right-side your fence to guide you home.
Pictures in the beginning are from the Dust Bowl, Oklahoma in the 1930's, called the "dirty thirties"....Blake Shelton is a proud Oklahoma....and they are known for rattle snake hunts...
Yeahhhh I’m so happy you guys reacted to my favourite country singer Blake Shelton. He’s a great artist with a great voice. You guys should def check out Austin by him. It’s definitely a timeless song. You won’t regret it. Love the fact you guys broaden your song taste. Keep up the great work,
I watch a lot of UK stuff. I'm a huge fan of David Mitchell, Michael Kitchen, Steven Fry, etc., etc., etc., BUT, I have to say you three are now my favorite guys in all the UK! Keep up the good work! And thanks!
My grandma is 102 years old. Having been the child of a farmer (it's still in the family) through the Great Depression and dust bowl years affected her for her entire life, no matter how financially stable she was for nearly her entire life. She influenced her kids, who influenced me and my cousins. We are all still impacted by those years, definitely not as dramatically as she was, but she passed some of it along.
I believe it. My husband's grandparents moved to California during the Dust Bowl to literally the final destination in Grapes of Wrath. The area is basically all Okies and Portuguese. It was a fun suprise for them that my husband would end up marrying a woman that lived about 20 minutes from (on the Texas side of the Red River) where they were from. Needless to say, I get a lot of persimmon cookies.
I live in the Southern United States so lots of pickup trucks around here. The downside to owning one is that everybody and his brother is always asking you to haul something around for them. Or so some pickup drivers have told me. I've never owned one, but I'd sort of like to have one just so I don't have to ask other people to help haul my stuff around. LOL. I certainly would hate to have to pay for the gas to run one around, though. And FYI, Blake Shelton was one of the original judges of The Voice and has been a judge on every season. Old Red was one of his earlier songs but it's well worth a listen.
He is signing about Oklahoma, his home state. I live in the panhandle of Texas. There is not much difference in the two. I live about 3,300 feet above sea level. It is a dessert. Cotton and grapes grow well here. It is a very dry climate. We have not had significant rain in oh 2 months. This area was called Comancheria. It was Comanche lands since the 1700s.
These are scenes of the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma and the rest of the video was filmed in Oklahoma, where Blake is from. The weather in Oklahoma can be brutal from cold, ice, snow to tornadoes and wind storms. The farm fields now have trees around them to keep another dust bowl from happening.
Im a slam kid at heart but as far as country songs go this one's a banger. Up there with dixie chicks and save a horse ride a cowboy. Don't get a truck I had a Chevy for years and shit just guzzles gas.
Yes, you are correct the black and white footage took place in the 1930's. The severe droughts caused dust storms that literally created desserts that choked out crops and livestock. The Great Depression also began in 1929 and lasted through 1939. 25% unemployment, 1/3 of banks failed, life savings gone, homeless skyrocketed and foreign trade collapsed. It was one of the reasons the US was so hesitant to enter WWII. We were in the infancy stage of recovery economically.
Love the banter, just speak slow down, like A truck is coming towards you!. Every word be heard in your own head. Listen before you speak and become kings!
He has a couple awesome duets with his wife Gwen Stefani. Check out 'Nobody but you' & 'Happy anywhere'. They did meet on the Voice. Blake has been on the show for 25 seasons. He used to be married to country star Miranda Lambert. This video was filmed on his own property in Oklahoma, I read somewhere. "The devil went down to Georgia" is a reference to Charlie Daniels famous song & 'Shine' is Hillbilly homemade liquor, called Moonshine. For a fun song check out 'Ol' Red' which was one of his first hits, when he was much younger.
When y'all were talking about pick up trucks, I had to listen for a couple because at first I thought y'all were saying pickle trucks. lol. Down here in Tennessee I've heard people refer to them as a pick 'em up.
You should look up hardy ,he's the guy that wrote the song for Blake but also wrote like 12 number 1 hits in the last 2 years ,he's a super prolific song writer
Enjoyed this reaction as usual with you blokes. A couple early song by Blake worth checking out are "The Baby" and "Old Red". Another thought is that I bet most of your subs from across the pond have never heard Hugh Laurie. My favorites are Saint James Infirmary and Unchained My Heart.
Great video as always. I’d gladly grab a beer with all of ya. I can’t resist recommending one video tho! Carson Peters and Ricky Skaggs - “Blue Moon of Kentucky” Bluegrass country music in its purest form being performed by a 10 year old, and one of his idol bluegrass country music icons.

I dont like many country artists, in ny we dont really listen to country but I do really like Blake Shelton. Chris Stapleton is my favorite for sure tho
You guys ought to give a listen to Home Free. They are the only acapella country music group (that I know of), but they do much more than just country music. They have covered some Blake Shelton songs. They have over 130 official music videos, and way over 200 videos in total. Try their cover of "Hillbilly Bone," or for non-country music their newest video, a cover of the old Percy Sledge song, "When a Man Loves a Woman." But try anything they do, you'll find it wonderful! Hmmm. One of their fairly early original songs is "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget." Worth trying! (And I promise, if you react to a Home Free song, you'll be inundated by recommendations from Home Fries, their very active fan group.)
The line, "the Devil Went Down to Georgia" was a reference the the song The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band.

All of you is wrong. The dust bowl was because of improper tilling practices.
As a fellow Okie, I would push back on the midwestern terminology.
I love this song and thanks to all the farmers out there who work harder before breakfast most days than a majority of people work in a whole week.
Well said! 👏🏻
Yes, they put food on our table!
This is on my farm chores playlist. Gets me working when I don't feel like doing anything lol
I thought I was the only person with a farm chore playlist😅
What else is on the playlist ?
What else m?
This is about as American as you can possibly get. Listening to God's Country by Blake Shelton doing farm chores.
Likewise 🇺🇸🙋♂️
If you want to listen to more of Blake I'd recommend "Ol' Red" and "Austin
His cover of Rhett Akin's "Kiss my Country Ass"
Blake grew up in Oklahoma, that is where I am from too! He owns a 1,300 acre ranch in Oklahoma. The black and white film in the video are historical clips of the dust bowl in Oklahoma, the remainder of the video was filmed at his ranch.
"Ol Red" is another great one from him. Great story.
Really like this song. Blake is a great country singer. I appreciate you guys for the reaction. Thanks from Texas.
The old parts of the video are actually of the the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma during 1930-34 ..... the others is on his land in Oklahoma
I love this song!! Glad you guys chose this one!! ✌️❤️Tennessee 🇺🇸
"Some Beach" is a good, funny song Blake sings.
“Boys Round Here” is a fun Blake Shelton song if you ever wanna do more.

This song sounds awesome on a stadium sound system. Production is awesome, LOVE the bell sound
I'm impressed that you guys recognized those scenes from the dust bowl. I'd bet 80%+ of Americans wouldn't know that.
