I want you to know I bought my LCD- XC due to your video. Best purchase ever. And the microcosm is so amazing. You could spend years and not exhaust its abilities
Inspiring stuff, I’m 43, and just about to build my first home mini studio, since my oldest son has moved out, the younger kids are moving rooms, finally leaving a tiny room free for me. There is very limited space and i have loads of gear stacked up in boxes waiting to move it all in and set it up (waiting for it to be painted and new carpets go down). Watching this video makes me extremely jealous of the space, the gear, the quality , the amount of synths, the vintage synths….urrrgh…..but at the same time I’m thankful that I’m going to be able to enjoy even just a small fraction of that in my own space now. I will be moving to a much bigger house in the next couple of years, and will finally have a dedicated space for my music, so will definitely come back to watch this video in the future for inspiration. Oh and that COFFEE MACHINE!….. I can smell it from here!.
I love how much he knows about his gear, and how much he knows he still has to learn. Going to subscribe to Tony's channel now. Thanks for sharing! My takeaway here is that I really need a CLK GTR model on my desk.
I love how he keeps his synths on racks, then moves them over to his main desk to play. That makes so much sense. 1) You are always facing the speakers when playing. 2) In front of the computer/keyboard to easily punch in/out. 3) being able to sit and concentrate. I'm thinking of mimicking this. Just brilliant idea.
I do this with 100w guitar amp heads and a Torpedo Studio. With something tactile you need it right in front of you. The downside is that some of these things are bloody heavy.
$35k on studio monitors, $16k on a pair of condenser microphones, etc tells me this a home studio that is only a home studio because it happens to be located in a house; The gear is beyond most home studios. Nice setup though!
This is my favorite tour you've ever done on the channel. I would totally hang out with this guy. His point about you inspiring musicians is spot on. I built my home studio after being sick and watching your channel. I keep coming back for more inspiration. Great stuff Andrew.
I dream about a day I realize @Tony Anderson has created a masterclass. A deep dive into his mind and approach to creation. Please please please please please.... Consider It. I would give all my time and energy to help make it happen and when the project is done, I will buy a copy of it.
Best home studio route and here is WHY: I'm glad I finally lived to see a host who knows his place at home not in "A" / "B" or 1/2...) Invest on that that you are the best and leave the rest for the bests!
You should buy a nice analog synth like the prophet 10 or oberheim obx8 as their strong character really brings out ideas. I wouldn't recommend digital modelling synths as they sound fake and have no character. The analog ones are quite expensive but based on the rest of your studio it looks like you can afford it ;)
Synths are a big rabbit hole, but I suggest getting one monosynth and one polysynth. I use a Moog Sub25 for bass and a Prophet Rev2 for chords and pads. The Novation Peak is also a good buy if you want a different, more modern character as it's a hybrid with digital oscillators and an analog filter. It's not for everyone, some people hate it, but I think it sounds very cool and different.
a couple of solid physical synths are worth their weight in gold, but I'll be honest- I use the software synths on my iPad INFINITELY more than any of the actual units I've got at my disposal.
Such an inspiring studio tour, not just about gear, but of Tony as fenomenal human being.. so polite, inteligent and life loving guy.. Hat down for both of you..
Came for the studio tour, stayed for the coffee nerding! One thing worth mentioning because I hear people say it now and again. When Tony says ‘Coles 4038s are noisy’ - they are passive, so they don’t make any noise at all. They’re low output/sensitivity so if you’re cranking your mic pre gain you’ll notice any noise present in the preamps. The active part of the AEA44s is increasing the level so the preamps can stay out of the noisy range. You could use a cloudlifter/fethead etc to get a similar result. The AEA44s are insane mics though and plenty of reason to use those regardless.
Totally spot on. The difference is the Cole’s recordings were still very noisy even with cloud lifters or soyuz launchers. Different preamps over the years with the same noisy results. RIP 4038s. They had to go! Especially for my style of music where the instruments are exposed at all times.
I can’t even with the blower thing. I’ve done compressed air cans, I bought a small air compressor….. I saw one of those things on Amazon and got it as a Christmas gift, and I’m very much feeling I’ve made a good choice. But now with the brush and the technique. ::chefs kiss::
Have to agree that Tony's music totally chills me out too. I am in awe of anyone who can produce music like his without any training. Whenever I feel low I put on his music and it lifts me every time. This is an awesome video. Humble and nice guy. Reminds me a little of BT
Amazing studio tour, one of the best yet! Tony interjects the perfect amount of humor and self deprecating humor to keep things light, but make no mistake about it, this is a highly specialized setup by someone very intent on becoming a master of their craft and honing their skillset in a way that is reflected by the way the studio is setup and gear choices, and there is some absolutely killer gear in that studio, the piano corner sounds so warm and vibey, just beautiful!
So inspiring, love the piano setup and workflow with one keyboard connected ata a time, and the cable free keyboard stands. I need to get a similar dust gun and brush. Such a clean and creative workspace.
Best video I've seen on your channel bro. We're all nerds. We're all weird people that gets excited about hanging cables on a wall and other weird things like that. And I love that. But this guy is able to be that and at the same time "I'm not gonna wait until I'm 80 to start enjoying the quality of life" 41:35 .. sorry but that is just so right that I felt it had to be pointed out. Focus, passion, practice, gear etc is all great, but damn right let's enjoy life. Now, if this is not inspiring I don't know what should be. Thank you for all your content and for keeping me and many others inspired! Love from London UK!
watching this while building my little home studio in Moscow with a budget of about 500 dollars (all the essential gear like pc, monitors, mic, etc. is already here, I am copping some furniture and parafernalia), and this video is a huge inspiration for me, a visual goal of where I'm supposed to get in some time. Even though the exchange rate is fucked up and every thing that's imported costs a couple times more in Russia nowadays, I know it's possible.
Inspiring Room. Reminds me of Christian Henson's shed...the permanent fixed space pair on the piano is a must for quick and seamless composition. Its like shoes...if they're difficult and annoying to get on your feet every morning, you will never wear them. Find the path of least resistance and allow your ideas to flow.

This was fantastic. I really appreciated the story behind selecting each piece of gear. Anyone can go buy a bunch of stuff and wire it up, but to hear how Tony literally went through hundreds of mics to find just the right set...just very impressive. LOVE the wood furniture too. Everything in the room. Thank you!
Andrew. THIS. is the best video you’ve done, hands down. Maybe because watching and listening to Tony is like confirmation that he really is my long lost brother from another mother - holy smokes, there’s more than one of us!!! 😂 I mean, his whole left brain-right brain civil war is SO familiar, among other things… insane. Seriously, the density of great ideas and fun factor in this one is off the charts. Funny enough, I’ve been considering unplugging all 20 of my hardware synths and doing Tony’s approach of just putting them all on shelves and pulling only one at a time. I’m hesitant to do it, but seeing someone else take that approach makes me want to try it. SO good. Hats off to you both!
Jim, we are analogue brothers living in a digital world. Let's hang - let's drink something good, and then you need to play my synths. They deserve better than what I've ever given them!!!!!!!!!!!
