What's your favorite part of Matt's setup/workflow?? He's the goat.
I can highly appreciate the workflow aspect of everything. Staying Creative Always!
My mixing desks and mic locker/ gear drawers are Husky as well. Home Depot Rocks!!!
My favourite part to his studio is the 3 roland RE-201 RE-301 and that beast of a 808 fed into them and the Langevins...(haha cant spell)sounded so dirty
Love all his Warm gear with all these other pieces as well. Rad mix of stuff- but all centered around creating without barriers.
Tr808 drum machine & him scratching in the dj deck. I gotta go check put this guys projects now.
This is basically the "entering the chocolate room in willy wonka" scene for a lot of musicians.
This is by far the best studio tour. He is actually using his gear and giving brief demonstrations and has sounds preloaded into protools etc.
It’s cool when people just show us the gear they have but it’s way better when they actually show us how they use their gear in real time rather just name off brand names.
This has been my favorite of all the tours because Matt still has that childlike hype that most of us share when it comes to making music. He's more excited to let us here things rather than showcase gear. Love it!
this is up there with the best studio tours since Matt actually plays and let's us hear all the gear & instruments. that makes the world of difference. great vid. we basically just watched him write like 4 new songs
Dude this is one of the most inspiring videos thus far. The immediacy and tactile nature of his studio is amazing. Studio goals.
This was quite fascinating and the best so far. I’m a fan!!!!!!!!!
definitely studio goal.
Getting into the moment really fast and just doing things from the start, real nice !
I guess he's most famous as a producer but his band Self put out insanely good music. The songwriting was just unbelievable. They're probably the one band I'm shocked never made it to be really big....though it's probably because Matt made the songs kinda askew and never really tried to write for radio hits.
I genuinely think he's a musical genius.
I think what made this studio tour so good is the studio owner actually played sounds through the gear!! Encourage that more in future tours --- makes it so much more fun!!
Great thing about Matt, even with all his talent and gear.. guy appears to have zero ego…. admirable
Matt is a legend. Still so surprised how little people know of sElf. Glad to see him on here!
Matt's Self album GIZMODGERY is still crazy to listen to all these years later! It's mind blowing!
this literally ranks as the raddest video on all of youtube. thank you for making it, AM! sElf / Matt is one of my very fave alltime artists forever, and this window into his mind, gear, and creative space was just an invaluable hour spent of my time, as a musician. i might have to rewatch. pure gold. amazing. need to watch more of your Epic HS series here!
I'm thoroughly convinced that Matt M. is the coolest dude ever!
Love how Matt just jumped on everything so we got hear it all! He's the real deal for sure. He seems pretty gear/software agnostic, 100% dedicated to the creative workflow. This was a special one.
Huge fan of Subliminal Plastic Motives!
Matt needs a masterclass on his DAW template!!! I love love love this guy and his vibe. Dope people, dope video!!!
Never heard of this dude before but just listened to Subliminal Plastic Motives - damn he's good and was probably way ahead of his time.
I have been watching a number of your studio tours for around 6 months now as I prepare for the creation of my own project studio up in Central New York. I learned a lot from the various tours and will incorporate what I have assimilated into my studio design.
That said, I found this particular tour to be THE MOST INSPIRING of all of your videos (so far). To be honest, this was a life-changing event for me. I found Matt Mahaffey to be incredibly inspiring, transparent, inquisitive, honest, educational, humorous, and unafraid to push the boundaries of creativity. He is an absolute master of his craft.
I will probably have to re-watch this a number of times just to digest the breadth of the content and put it into perspective so that I can draw upon his knowledge and experience as I approach my own projects. I have an extreme case of G.A.S and have been accumulating a trailer-full of equipment over the past few years in preparation for this plunge into music production (guitars, synths, amps, MIDI keyboards, a full mic locker, racks of outboard gear, preamps, cables, etc.). I am not a professional musician; more of a creator/producer/video editor. I produce training videos for extremely complex software programs.
My background is in computer technology, professional lighting, high-end theatrical facility design, and recording studio design. I am leaving my corporate job of 24 years this summer and will embark on exploring my true passion with the creation of my project studio. I will actually build it from the ground up and try to incorporate a lot of what I have learned from all of your videos.
I found Matt to be incredibly inspiring. He has instilled the confidence in me that I can start with my Nektar Impact MIDI controller, a Moog Matriarch, an Arturia synth, a Yamaha piano, a vast collection of guitars and other instruments, racks full of outboard gear, multiple DAWS, hundreds of plugins and sample libraries, no real training at reading music, and just basic guitar and keyboard skills to unleash my long-suppressed musical creativity and produce some quality productions.
I realize that my gear collection is just a means to the end goal, but I believe that I have the necessary skills, just needed someone like Matt to inspire me and remind me that the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first few steps. I am in awe at what Matt has accomplished and am now determined to unlock the potential that I have kept hidden away inside for so long.
Thanks to you both for sharing your experiences with others and inspiring us all to find and express our talents.
Never heard of Self before today. Not sure how I missed out for so long, haha. Just queued up Sophomore Jinx; incredible song. Excited to listen to some more.
Dude, you're in for a rabbit-hole-sized treat of epic proportions!!! Glad you found it!
You are in for a real treat!
Sophomore Jinx is one of the greatest but pretty much every sElf song is a banger! You're in for a real treat. One of the best ever!
Their record "Breakfast with girls" blows my mind every time
The the millennial falcon reference. Unique individual and studio. I love how he has his outboard equipment patched in to what he uses not some patch bay.
You should see the life-sized Darth Vader he has in his living room lol. It's enormous.
Never heard of him, but it seems like he’s done some nice stuff, he’s definitely a gear nerd with a good setup that suits him… good attitude too, so it was delightful to watch!
Coffee and a new studio tour... nobody’s having a Better morning than me today
A-ma-zing character. He looks like a sound alchemist in his lab.
This might be the coolest one yet…and that’s a tall order.
HE WILL NOT KNOW MUSICAL LANGUAGE, BUT HE HAS ALL THE RHYTHM AND MUSIC AND VIBES, THAT OF ALL THE HOME STUDIO VIDEOS YOU HAVE MADE HE PLAYED ALL THE TOYS. IT LOOKS LIKE HE'S AN INCREDIBLE GUY.
CONGRATULATIONS SOON 1K!!!!
His ns10 setup is straight up terrifying!!
What a fun guy and studio! Thx Andrew!
Finally someone making some sounds in a studio tour ;)
Did I hear that right? A Terabyte of RAM? Holy sh#t! What a cool dude and amazing studio!
This guy is the best part of the studio. He makes you comfortable and has a great positive energy.
I know Matt From California, Andrew You are truly the Man. Keep on Rockin
I think this is one of the most interesting studio tours. It was amazing he played every instrument, he showed us his studio for real, it was fun to watch and so inspiring at the same time.
Ok..., THIS is definitely my favorite epic home studio ever....
This guy has has YEARS to perfect that setup. He was collecting gear long before anyone else from his generation was. He is an OG.
@@tyler_ Totally OG.
i basically grew up on his band self. loved all his albums (including the many online-only freebies), other projects he produced like call florence pow and mondo primo, basically everything he touched. self’s 2005 farewell concert in nashville was my first show, and their subliminal plastic motives anniversary show in nyc a decade later was the last concert i saw before moving abroad. this is an incredible video - it was such a great experience getting to watch the man in his element for a full hour. i still cycle back to his music in a big way once every few years, and this is getting me back into a self mindset for sure…psyched for the new album but now i also really wanna catch up on everything he’s ever done, including the TV scores and all that. does anyone have a (mostly?) definitive list of his releases and credits? i'd love to catch up
That guy was the coolest dude!!! I've seen Andrew interview. He's got to be a blast to be around!!!
Love this guy! What I love about his set up/workflow is his 808 and Space Echos as well as his love for break beat/hip hop knowledge! The think I love this most are his ears and his ability to listen to something and recreate a sound/feel like he did with the prince Linn drum machine.
This is great. Big sElf fan here, really fun to see how Matt works. Can't wait for the new album!
My family moved here to Nashville back in the mid-90s (I was in high school), right when the whole Spongebath Records scene was blowing up. So many cool memories came out of it. Seeing SeLF multiple times and getting a signed pair of drum sticks from Jason (still have them, unused!), eventually getting to know the guys from The Features (another band on that label) once my mom became their photographer for a while (blew. my. mind.), etc. After so many years as a fan, very...very cool to see Matt's studio and hear that new SeLF music is incoming!!
I love this one Andrew.. Matt is so ridiculously talented and you can tell he knows every inch of ALL of his setup inside and out from a technical stand point, but at the same time is an ultra creative BEAST!!
So cool to see that some of the studio owners you're doing tours of are also influenced by your tours!
I like every part of the setup but that lounge, wow!
Anyone else’s eyes bulge when he bowed that percussion? Amazing vid.
I’ve had the pleasure to meet Matt a couple of times. He is actually even nicer in person. Best guy I’ve ever met in music. I’ve been a fan every since I heard Cannon on thunder 94 in Nashville. Was so proud that someone from TN could make this kind of music. Wasn’t hardly anyone like that back then . Can’t await to hear what is next!!
I'd never heard of Matt Mahaffey but that guy is awesome. Would love to hang out. Thanks for sharing y'all!
Jungle producers in the UK used to tune 808 kicks as bass lines in the early 90s but still, mad kudos for doing that in 95!!
The first person to tune an 808 for a bass line, was DJ Magic Mike for, " Feel The Bass" (Speaker Terror Upper), released in 1988
@@davislewislove1314 amaaaazing track, thank you!!
@@davislewislove1314 Feel The Bass has a sample from 2 Live Crew from 86 that has tuned 808s too altho im not sure if its similar technique. Awesome thanks for sharing.
Sonic paradise. Best tour yet!!
Matt Mahaffey is the best!!!
Andrew, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! Matt is my all time favorite of everything music... I still to this very day can remember where I was in 1995 and what I was doing when I first heard So Low on the Radio. This was such a blast to watch. Thanks again for Posting! Oh,... and Matt had to drop that bomb about a new Self Album,....! I guess we heard it here first!
yesssssssssss
I always click and skim through your videos, as I'm not a guitarist or anything like that. So I scan through what interests me the most (keyboards, controllers, mixing consoles, chains, etc). But I must say, Matt is an extremely interesting character, and I truly enjoyed every minute of this video. He held my attention throughout, and it was really great to see someone so eccentric and lively about what they do.
PS He gave me a Pauly Shore vibe. 🙂
Straight up best part of my Monday mornings is enjoying my coffee and watching the studio tours keep it up the work. I’m stoked for how big your channel is growing you deserve it bro!
Dude! I've got that controller too. Cool to see a pro using such an inexpensive controller.
This guy rules... One of the funniest videos yet. This guy is what music is all about. Having fun and just going for it!
Initially, I was unsure about the setup and Matt Mahaffe, but upon reevaluating the video from a different perspective, I have come to the conclusion that his entire setup offers numerous possibilities for composing music and a lot of creativity. I am a composer and engineer, but I have spent too much energy on mixing and mastering equipment and too little on creativity. Matt Mahaffe has found the right balance, and now I can appreciate him as an artist.
I had to replay the intro a few times. Boom!
SeLF fans: a little bit 'o Placing the Blame with those felt pads. Nicely nicely. 55:10
so cool like a cool music store with only the best gear...nice
Matt is a legend! Great video.
THIS is exactly how I want my setup! This has been the best tour so far dude. It killed me that I was just in Nashville for a week knowing you were out there somewhere with all your cool knowledge and toys! 😆
Frankly that Minikorg FS700 with Overstayer Instrument Driver is like taking a rocket to Saturn with no helmet. But that extension is almost impossible to find anywhere in the world. Such a lovely studio, kind of a heaven for "my kind of" devices to be honest. Thanks man. Greetings from Izmir🥂
Can’t lie, the intro had me thinking “oh god, one of these guys” but this was great. I loved him playing with the synth and drum machine into the Space Echo’s. The joys of hardware. I’ve got to get some of those Azzam Bells.
I gotta see the gizmodgery setup
Been listening to Self since the first album. Also, can't believe he got that organ in my hometown of Camden!
dope af! that drum break in the intro
Out of all your studio tours- I wanna make music with this guy. So rad!!
It was really awesome to see him jam! Would be great if more of your guests made some sounds / beats ❤️
Matt is a crazy genius! What a pleasure to go through his studio! Two thoughts! 1 - Subliminal Plastic Motives, is a masterpiece, and got missed by most of us simply due to timing! 2 - so awesome to see Matt’s shear enthusiasm with his audio! He just loves all of it! So inspiring! Can’t wait for the New sElf release! Please Matt, go for a Surround mix! Love you man!
Long time sElf fan here. Wow. An absolute joy to watch Matt take the studio for spin & just hang out on the channel for a bit. 🔥
Incredible musician.. Love the work he did with Jeff Turzo as: Wired all wrong.
What a treat!
my hero!
20 years of template building. What a workflow. Amazing support for an incredibly talented couple.
Man, what a nice show case of this Artist's wonderful studio:)! Initially, I wasn't into watching over an hour long video "studio tour"! But, from the start this is the best studio and tour that you've ever done (and they're all great)! But, this studio was talking to me because the Artist's passion is excellent and good to experience... Very nice work!
He is the best man.. He is a work beast for sure. You cant teach the love and passion for music. Its in the blood lol....
More tours like this please!
For sure hearing Matt use some of his gear was my favorite part about this! Sure, looking at pretty gear is fun, I'll be the first to admit - But listening to sounds that actually inspire me to pick up an instrument and write something is priceless. That Korg Mini / MS-20 section was soooo killer!
I need like twelve more hours of this
I love to see these cats take so much pride with their gear. Way cool.
This man is a musical genius. I’m blown away. Great interview.
This is such a versatile studio. Love it and love the references to so many cool UK and European acts.
That Soyuz 017 is absolutely Glorious
it's magical!
This Dude is so cool! I love people that share and he's open and can JAM! Keep on Poppin' and Rockin'--Peace!
I want to be like him 😭 so much love, knowledge and passion for the art
Wow. Studio goals. So many rad sounds....💻🎧🎤🎙🎸🥁🎹
this was amazing. I love this so much.. extremely inspiring.
super cool bloke....thanks for showing his setup....i can 100 percent see why you been waiting to do a tour with him...please can you revisit whilst hes working....id really like to see him in action...
a year later almost....please revisit this guy i really want to see his workflow...
This is so dreamy and awesome
Thank you so much for shining a light on such a talented artist! No one influenced me more when I first started recording than Matt. So excited about the new Self album!
really enjoying this episode... thank you so much!!!
I love this guy... Definitely should do Atmos
Matt is not playing around. What a cool guy. Thanks. Great tour.
brilliant, Matt's sheer enthusiasm is infectious, the joy in creating music is both childlike and inspiring, thanks.
I can totally relate to this workflow. Great stuff, guys!
OMG, just the straight acoustics on those drums through your camera mic sound amazing!
I LOVE his studio, and Matt seems like a great guy to be around as well.
that is one cool studio! it has so much character.
So cool to see the gear actually being used and how it inspires the producer!
What a chill dude he is
Awesome tour! Love that he and his wife team up & work together on projects.
You haven’t exaggerated in the intro. This guy and his equipment are fascinating . Like something from the future. Cool of him to share and you to post. Subscribed.
Loved this one! Very inspirational
Dude is like a mad genius! I love what he has going on with his synths!!
