There was a story / myth about Prince working on a Neve at Larrabee (I think) with candles on top of the meter bridge when the Northridge earthquake hit. It was a mess & I'd know. I was assisting in a Neve room when a client ignored my warnings about candles. 8 channels got covered in wax during an aftershock. It took us weeks to remove the wax & restore them. At least it was only a VR.🤣😂

Incredible studio ! But as always not a word about the Rhodes... It would have been interisting to know how he records it, does he puts microphones face to the 12s inches ? preamp out ? Harp out with custom preamp ? There's always good stories with Rhodes, found under a mount of autumn leaves, played by Donald Fagen etc. ;)
Thank you for this excellent video and never forget the Rhodes... Greetings from France. Best regards.

    Cool guy nice pieces
The Neve is nice too - the most ordered version of this 8078 was the ic version, as the discrete BJT transistor cards ( class A/B) BA440 cards would slip to class B when warm also more expensive to service. So the BBC would always order the IC version, & Neve themselves promoted that idea. The ic NE5534 I believe. Possibly 32s
It’s funny because I see very famous audio websites say the “classic Neve is not IC” I’m like well the 8078 and Air Monserrat must be in the non-classic range then 🤣 such BS! And the AIR had some of the greatest specs ever.
Also that contradictory website Wikipedia lol… states that the Neve 8078 is one of the most classic Neve consoles of all time, and even one of the most classic’s ever built.
A classic for sure I think, going by the sound it produces. 💯

@@FromTheWestBarnPodcast there is a great option I’ve been using in my Neve 54 series console which works for the op amp version if the 8078 is that version.
The sparkos Class A op amp are true class A and use BJT transistors.
I’ve replaced the IC’s throughout and it’s amazing. I can send you samples a/b with a 1073 if you want to hear the side by side comparison 👍

    • @RemyRAD
      @RemyRAD Рік тому +1

I read your response regarding the Neve. You're only sort of right. Regarding the 8078, IC chip conversion. Which, yes had those, NE 5534n's. And a pair of, A/B biased, output driver transistors. That were always biased, Class A/B.
I can also attest to this much. While Rupert and I had many hours of, conversations. For over 25 years. Once I found myself an owner of a custom NBC-TV Neve. Of serial number 3869. Now it's going were all old legendary audio consoles go. One module at a time out to the masses. For others to experience the goodness. But here's another thing, few know.
In my conversations with Rupert. His early, 1970s designs were, discrete transistor. As Chips had not yet been, invented. They came after we landed on the moon. In July 1969.
Now Rupert built both, Class A consoles and Class A/B, consoles. And being the purest that I understood he was. He didn't much care for his, A/B, circuits. Because of the, teeny tiny, little itty-bitty bit of, crossover notch distortion. In the A/B biasing. It never goes to pure Class B ever. There's always that small overlap. Nevertheless.
Those BA-438 and BA-440, operational amplifiers. Were used in a wad of luscious sounding, consoles. And these differ in character. To the, Class A transistor versions. That is found in the, 1073, 1084. Pure Class A. But then there are those others that are highly coveted. Such as the, 1081's. Way different sounding from the, 1073's. Yeah! More aggressive! More punchy. More zip! More solid. Upfront and in-your-face. Thanks to that little bit of extra, crossover notch distortion. It has just the right, dissonant, odd order, distortion components. To give your rock 'n' roll that extra edge. That extra zip!
Where the pure Class A circuits are nice sure. But they are a little soft sounding for the 21st century styles of music. And all of that esoteric bullshit about Class A being better than Class A/B is total bunk and bullshit!
In fact my console had the modules called 3115's. Identical to, 1073's. But using Class A/B, transistor op amps. And I really like it better for rock 'n' roll. I keep turning everybody else on to these, also. And they usually come around. In short. Their sound has more, Balls! Even more than the Class A versions.
He intended these to be used for the same kinds of, demanding applications and then some. He intended the A/B circuitry. To be cooler running. And more robust to failures. Industrial with a golden touch. And designed for, demanding, network television operations of, 24/7, daily use. And so he told me he built the network television audio consoles. To be much more heavier duty. To that of his recording consoles. And I can attest to that and verify that.
So nobody knows what's truly good anymore. It's all a bunch of wives tales, rumors and lies. That I see chips are better than, silicon transistors. Bullshit! You can overdrive the chances choose to make magic! Over driving those 5534's. Really does not sound good. They sound all bloated. Not like the transistors sound. Which sound huge! And they do a little magic trick. When you gain stage, just right! One click extra! And the output meter is slammed! And there ain't no distortion! Woo hoo! Because those had, headroom up the wahzoo! At every stage. From input to output. But you could push those, Class A/B consoles harder. And you'll just go nuts! Way beyond that of the boring, Class A.
Now you also have to understand. IC chips, have a lot more transistor junctions within them. And the more transistor junctions you go through. The more distortion you get. And old-fashioned, low topography consoles like these. Very easy to work on and modify. To your hearts content. But really no need to. So don't!
I have to go to sleep before the sun comes up.

      @@RemyRAD cool info
Yes best pre amps BJT transistors
I’ve converted my Neve completely over to discreet op amps built on 3 stages of BJTs running completely class A
Very different to class a/b really actually compared to my Neve 1073 stereo strip the console is even bigger, but that’s down to the fact that you can drive the L01166 transformer with the fader which is far easier than the 1073 strip outboard trim, that seems to peak out before reaching the large warm saturation levels.
But yeah I agree the best sounding Neve’s are bJTs class a throughout
But ha many that don’t own Neve’s don’t realize how many were a/b chip or transistor
1081 different as the output stage was a/b, but everything else in it was class A, so it’s a great mix fat yet punchy
      👍

That's a very impressive and quite capable,, control room. To say the very least.
I've never owned an, SSL. No. I've used them, sure. Instead, I owned something better. I had a 1978, Sphere, Eclipse-C, 32 x 24. But before that. I had 32 API 312 microphone preamps. And 2 highly customized, Auditronics 501's, tied together. With 52 inputs. But then I got an incredible bargain. On one of three, 1972, Rupert Neve custom for NBC-TV, Washington, DC. That I used for, 12 years in, Control Room B. A beauty I love using but knew, I would never be able to own one. Until I did.
The quasi-SSL 4000 style, 10 input clone microphone preamp. Ain't nothing to write home about and rarely gets used. And this is not counting the, 12 inputs worth of vacuum tube, 8 Altec and 4 custom tube mixers and preamps.
Thankfully I am not in a wheelchair. Yet. Though my MS could leave me flat. At any time. I have unfortunately been thrust into, and awkward and uncomfortable retirement. And all said equipment is now about a memory for me. It was great! You know it! You have it. I had it.
And with that luscious sounding equipment. My heart sinks now that I'm without it. As sometimes retirement doesn't quite work out as one planned. And not having made any recordings, since the pandemic. I guess I'm done. Down and out of the scene. But hey. I did my thing for God and country. As an atheist. And I made it to the end of my 50 year career. About 10 years too early. And so things are now a bit awkward. And I ended up poor. Thanks to numerous health conditions. That one may never recover from. And that can skew the azimuth on your Scully 280 B. Or the original 280. Whichever you prefer. Ampex, 3M, Studer, MCI, still modestly acceptable.
And I don't think, Studer is better. As I was trained as an authorized, factory warranty, repair technician for, 3M, Ampex, MCI. An declined job offers from two of those. To, instead. A request to help save the legendary, Scully's. As their last ever, Quality Control Manager and Final Test Engineer and overall machine troubleshooter. And without a college degree.
As for needs a college degree? When all you're going to do is, design and build recording studios. And the junk that goes inside. While watching a movie on HBO. While on the air with, Tom Brokaw's Nightly News. For about 10 years running. Some of my directors would get upset when I was watching movies on HBO. But you don't screw up. When you know. Three, to, 10 million people were watching and listening. And when you don't screw up. It makes it much easier to watch, HBO movies in an, NBC-TV control room. When you are in an isolated, audio control room. From the video control room. Otherwise… Directors and producers, would complain about the sound from HBO. And so you really have to know how to, operate those early 70s, Neve consoles.
That is one gorgeous studio you have, sir! I'm so jealous. I'm also so retired now. I miss it. Likely as much as you miss, walking. My MS hasn't curtailed that for me. Yet. But I'm also not the man I used to be. As a woman. And all the good old-fashioned, rock and rollers. Are really but a memory. There ain't no more rock! There are just oldies. And you need a cover to not be, obscene. And remember to zip your fly. Before you go on stage. Or not.
    Can I move in?

there iare conflicting stories on the neve console. East west are still doing interviews where the neve console that recorded MJ bad and dangerous albums is still located at east west studios in los angeles. So I am confused on who owns the actual console that recorded MJ. I know MJ first couple of albums such as thriller and off the wall was recorded on a harrison 32C console by Bruce Swedien.

They won’t throw him free gear if he’s trashing them online. Warm audio basically has no originality, I don’t know if they have any original designs and the clones they make are bottom of the barrel compared with anyone else doing it like heritage or BAE.
