    It's great how easy the gamecube controller is to work with. I did a parts swap between black one with a worn out grey stick but fully functional boards and an orange spice one with worn out button membranes and a faulty c-stick module but the sticks and buttons were in good condition, so I kept the board from the black one and used the stick, shell, and buttons from the orange spice one to make something perfect. Obviously not gonna paint that because I've always loved the look of the orange spice controller, but I am thinking about trying some custom buttons and maybe some Xbox stick caps.

    You can get the z buttons to fit by cutting off the prongs and using an exacto knife to trim the part by the prongs (iirc it’s the inside edge). I’ve done it with several of those kits and it works great.

    Fun fact, third party sticks in particular don't always feel great, and xbox control sticks work as a replacement. You can replace both sticks too, to add a modern twist to your controllers. It's important to note that traditional xbox control sticks sit kind of high and you can see underneath the stick to the inside of the controller when you tilt it in either direction which can be distracting but there are some bigger base models that cover that empty space

    Ye those button replacements are great except for the z button. I'm looking through painting videos because I finished the shell and button replacements for 2 of 4 so far. First one was an OEM swapped into a non official transparent purple shell with transparent buttons. Easy. Second was to have a black OEM match the purple. So purple has black buttons, reverse on the black. Welp, that's where I found that the hole for the z button is almost literally a mm away from the same thing. So if you're as dumb and determined as me; you'll need what I seem to use the most during video game hardware modding. An exacto knife (non metal/ conductive handle) and a torch (lighter might take too long). Heat up the knife and with an extremely steady hand you can trim down the lip of the z button that's gonna hide under the shell anyway. The heat will make cleaner cuts than all the white marks from dry cutting. You're mostly aiming towards the middle of the controller part of the z button. Once you've relieved that mm from the button it should line right up. Careful that the pegs on the button are fragile and will try to snap off I'd you force the shell closed without accounting for the gap

    • @make432
      @make432  2 роки тому

      Yes, our best guess it the majority of z buttons are molded after the "modern" gamecube controllers (like the special editions made for smash) and not the original ones.

      @make432  3 роки тому

      Hey Dre! We did, we used this clear coat - amzn.to/3iFjgRb - but we've also been recommended 2K clear coat, which is likely better but more expensive. The one we used is holding up well through regular usage though!

  • @sebseb9890
    @sebseb9890 3 роки тому +2

    My question is do they feel the same after the paint job? I painted my controller using the same method described here and afterwards it just feels tacky. Like almost sticky. It doesn't feel like the same kind of plastic that it used to.

    • @make432
      @make432  3 роки тому +3

      They don't feel exactly quite the same as before, but the tackiness does go away with time and it does get VERY close to the same feeling as the original plastic. We ended up letting ours sit and dry for a long time, a few weeks or so, before really handling them a lot. Just curious what color/buttons did you do?

    How do you apply the varnish properly when you finish repainting?my controller got a bit crusty andbread I am not sure if I screwed up the step pf the paint because of ita being a hot day or because of the varnish.

    • @make432

      Was just a really unfunny joke about the paint.
      Just a heads up though Montana gold is a low pressure can designed for fine line work. (Less paint comes out the can)
      More expensive, smaller color selection.
      Montana black is a high pressure can. A good all around can. (More paint comes out of the can) Cheaper, bigger color selection. Also Ironlak is a very good quality paint as well and is cheaper the Montana.
      (Montana=Apple)
      (Ironlak= Microsoft)
      But both are made for graffiti. They dry very fast within 10 to 20 seconds and don’t fade over time from UV damage. With a very high pigment output, and a wide section of colors.
      Check out Montana’s Marble and Spider cans. I would like to see how y’all use them.
      Ironlak Sugar low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. Good if you are painting inside with low ventilation.
      Btw great videos they are very entertaining.
