DHEA, The Often Neglected Hormone That Helps Against The Effects of Aging

  • Опубліковано 17 сер 2024
  • I wanted to tell you a little bit about an often neglected hormone called DHEA. This is a hormone that can be important in aging, and it definitely declines as we age. Peak levels would be in your thirties and then they would begin to decline such that by about the age of 55, you've lost about 60% of your production of DHEA. It comes mostly out of the adrenal glands, although some of it is made in the ovaries in women and the testicles in men. DHEA is considered to be a neuro hormone, it mostly has effects supporting the brain, particularly with mood, memory, concentration, and multitasking. It also assists the metabolism and helps with fat burning to some degree.
    For women after the menopause, it turns out that DHEA is the source of all of the sex hormones that your body is able to make now that the ovaries are no longer making them; that includes estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. For men, DHEA does not convert directly to testosterone, but it certainly does help to support mood and memory.
    There are very few side effects associated with supplementing DHEA. It could cause a little bit of oily skin or acne, even a little bit of facial hair growth and certainly if the level was too high, we could start to see becoming a little bit angry or irritable and short tempered, so getting the dose right is important.
    This particular hormone is available over the counter as a supplement in the United States, but in Canada, Health Canada regulates DHEA because it can convert to testosterone in women so it is considered an anabolic steroid for women, which is why it's only offered by prescription in Canada.
    My usual starting dose for women would be between 5 to 10 milligrams a day, whereas for men more like 50 to 100 milligrams a day. The testing of the levels of DHEA is usually not something that's covered by MSP insurance so be expected to pay a little bit for the blood test if you want it to have your levels checked. If they are low, consider talking to your doctor about going on some DHEA as a replacement to help you with some of the effects of aging.

      DHEA is the “parent” hormone and can be converted into androgens and estrogen. The 7 Keto form does not convert, so I use it particularly in women who get unwanted side effects from DHEA like oily skin or acne. The 7 Keto avoids that.

    I take 20 mg per day with a popular multivitamin and I can concentrate easily for 8 hours in conferences or when working by myself, used by itself or at seperate times from the multivitamin it seems not to do much... can't figure it out why. It just is ... so I take the two together.
    Also there's a lot less squeaking in my knees when doing squats... I am 56 years. been taking DHEA for 7 years more or less daily, and eat anything I fancy with moderation. As for anti-aging, I look 45 (so I've been told)
    As for the estrogen thing... I have noted that with exercise (weights and endurance) testosterone rises... failure to exercise estrogen markers jump way up within 3-4 days.
    So I keep active, and the wife is happy. wink.!

      DHEA does not automatically convert to testosterone, your body decides how to "distribute " whats there.
      There is a lot of wishy washy studies done on the correlation of dhea and prostate cancer.
      Recent studies on the cancer show aggressive cancer in patients with LOW testosterone. But once a cancer is found blocking natural testosterone helps keep the cancer under control.
      Remember. Some people smoke cigarettes all their life and others get lung cancer quickly! Luck of the draw.

      Pregnenolone is a DHEA precursor and is a safer option if you're concerned, you can raise your levels this way but Alzheimer's and other serious illnesses (like autoimmune disease) are associated with LOW DHEA, so it's a coin toss. Do yourself a favor and get tested @ a retail lab (like Ulta Labs, they have a $30 test) before getting started, you can track your levels if you can't find or afford a Functional Medicine doctor.

      Both hormones are produced by the adrenal glands. Some studies have suggested that supplementing DHEA will reduce cortisol but this has not been determined for sure. It is true that people with high cortisol levels often have low DHEA, and if they are able to reduce stress and improve (lower) their cortisol, the DHEA also improves (increases). I typically take DHEA first thing in AM.

      Because DHEA is produced mainly by the adrenal glands, a lower production in your 30’s would be related to overall adrenal function. Supporting the adrenals may be all that’s required to get DHEA back on track.

Boron helps to reduce the amount of estradiol, a type of estrogen and Zinc lowers estrogen levels by stopping an enzyme in fat tissue (called aromatase) from changing other hormones into estrogen. What is your DHEAS level? I would only supplement if you are at the lower end of the normal range, plus I would discontinue DHEA once you are pregnant

    I took one capsul of DHEA supplement in a week, Doctor. Is that alright? I stopped it because its price is sky-high.

      Should be cheap, actually. I like Swanson brand, the cost means nothing as far as quality.

    What about 4-DHEA?

    • @pagdinhealth
      @pagdinhealth  6 місяців тому

      4-DHEA is simply a pro-hormone of DHEA, meaning it gets directly converted into DHEA, so it offers no advantages over just using DHEA itself.

      Not true: you are thinking of 4-androstenedione

      @@pagdinhealth well doesnt 4-dhea convert to 4 andro though? And then convert to testosterone so its a 2 step precursor to testosterone or am i wrong?

      I would only suggest taking it if your blood level is in the lower half of the range or below normal

      @@comedyvideos1659 yes there can be: there is no such thing as a perfectly safe hormone! Too much DHEA can make you feel edgy, irritable, or anxious, and in women can cause androgenic side effects like oily skin, acne, and whiskers

    Will DHEA lower our semen volume?

    • @pagdinhealth
      @pagdinhealth  6 місяців тому +1

      DHEA supplementation for men should have no appreciable effect on testosterone levels or semen volume
