Since Nitro mentioned it first, I actually DON'T want to see Odyssey 2 (GASP!). I mean, I wouldn't be upset if it happened, but rather than follow up the original with something similar, I'd rather see Galaxy 3, or maybe even 3D World 2. The reason is while I enjoy Odyssey a lot, it looses the feel of a platformed as it focuses more on exploration and collecting. I think it would be nice to get another Mario on Switch that goes back to that and feels totally separate from Odyssey. Although I rarely have a second player available, I thought 3D World was great for multiplayer.

Yeah I agree, the final battle was very underwhelming. I didn't think Galaxy 1's fight was that amazing, but it was easily better than 2's. I probably should have mentioned that but oh well.
For me, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best game in the series solely for the stage variety. While it may not control as tightly as Mario Odyssey, it more than makes up for it by having such memorable levels. The Oasis section at the end of Slimy Spring is one of the most beautiful looking places I've seen in a video game, not only for the incredible looking sunset, but for how much it contrasts from the dark and gloomy interior of the level you played before. If Galaxy 2 got a virtual console release/HD remaster on the Switch, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Or hell, give me Mario Galaxy 3.
Ultimately, I've always personally thought that Galaxy 1 had the better atmosphere, while Galaxy 2 had the better gameplay. Strictly as a game, I agree with you, Galaxy 2 does so much better... but I dunno, I feel like something really important was lost when they dropped the beautiful atmosphere of Galaxy 1. ...for the record, the potential space puns with "atmosphere" was completely unintentional when I wrote this.
I kind of disagree with the whole "atmosphere" thing. I think that there are several points in 2 with a really good atmosphere, like Slimy Spring Galaxy and the one water world I forget the name of both have a really serene, calming atmosphere. Maybe it's just because of the music, which is _really good_ (I would say even better than Space Junk, which is saying a lot!) but yeah, that's just my two cents on the subject.
Its not the atmosphere of a specific level, but of the whole game. G1 made me emotional and feels more spacey, while G2 focused more on fun gameplay and mechanics. Like something feels off when going from G1 to G2.
I agree that something was lost when transitioning from galaxy 1 to galaxy 2. But I don’t think it’s the atmosphere since it’s still crazy, wacky and memorable worlds and music. Maybe the magic and wonder of galaxy 1 was lost. However I feel the reason the games are the same but so different is 100% because of the level design. No game I can think of can even compare with galaxy 2s level design. Galaxy 1 relied on the gravity mechanic too much where as galaxy 2 relied on extremely innovative ideas like the flip switches and beat blocks and the 2d sections as well, galaxy 2 used gravity to either hide some little secret(pipe on the underside of planets) or to benifit the level design like in tall trunk galaxy.
I just got Galaxy 2 a few days ago and started playing it today, and I must say, the first impressions are definitely much better than in Galaxy, and this is coming from someone who ADORED Galaxy. Definitely the better Galaxy game, in my opinion.
I think that what really soured most people about Galaxy 2 was the fact that it has one of the worst final bosses in a Mario game. It's like the developers were suddenly too lazy to make a well designed final boss and made it near impossible to die! Can't believe you did not mention the shitty final boss :(
Something else I noticed is that the camera is much better in Galaxy 2. In Galaxy, the camera could easily get the wrong angle and get blocked by the level. In Galaxy 2, the camera has much better angles and it doesn't let objects block your view.
Galaxy 2 has more of a cheerful vibe to it that makes me like it quite a bit more than the original (I think a level like Cloudy Court Galaxy kinda reinforces that for me).
I don't understand how you don't have more subs my dude, you put so much work into these videos and you're extremely entertaining. Good luck man keep it up.
Fantastic video! Great summary of how Galaxy 1 compares to 2 as well. 1 for setting the magical space atmosphere and 2 for more tightened level design for people who've experienced the first game and wanted more. But both games are still pretty approachable for new players either way.
I think what makes me like the first one way more is like you said, the story. You can have cool ideas but if I don't care about the story it won't matter. Galaxy one always sticks with me because there was some weight and tension to getting to Bowser. Something I haven't ever felt in any other Mario game. Good concepts for a Galaxy don't factor to the memorability to me because it didn't matter as much. I've always appreciated a good story in my games which is probably why Galaxy 2 never struck me as hard. And because of the weaker story I couldn't help but feel it was just an expansion of the first with not much else to differentiate it. I know Zelda is completely different, but Majora's Mask really did prove you could do a whole lot different with the same engine. Its not like I need a good story in a Mario game but having one really helped. All of that being said, its still a pretty fun game besides the Green Stars. But it may very well be my least favorite 3-D Mario game not counting 3-D Land and World. Still good hearing your opinion. I always love your videos.
Nice-Guy Hunter Yeah. But calling it a mere expansion is completely ignorant. Did you play galaxy 2 half asleep? Because there are so much more ideas and better level design.
Callinater You must be missing the point. The lackluster story makes it feel like it’s just an expansion. Well designed and thought out yes, but nothing that will stick with me like the first one does.
Nice-Guy Hunter I understand. But beyond the story galaxy 2 earns more than enough to be a worthy sequel imo. Many new power ups and phenomenal levels.
You forgot to praise the sound track. There are so many good pieces like Sky station Galaxy, Space storm Galaxy, Throwback galaxy, Fluffy bluff Galaxy, Cosmic coves Galaxy, Starshine beach Galaxy, etc.
Love to hear such positivity about a game that is one of the first videogames I really got into! I played this game over the course of years with my younger sister, starting when we were young kids and not very good at video games (not that I'm that much better now) and it was a fun experience to come back to this game when we both happened to have free time and try a stage or two over and over again. It really is a fun game, and as we got older we were able to handle the more challenging aspects. We finally finished the main story last year but never really got around to the post game content, especially as we've been enjoying Odyssey.
Gotta say, Nitro. After seeing this, the next time I set up my Wii to the tv, I'm gonna make sure a play through Galaxy 1 so I can hype myself up for Galaxy 2, cuz the experience you've sold me on sounds like a 'once in a blue moon' sort of time.
As a kid, Throwback Galaxy and the Piantas had me extremely hyped. There were levels of extraordinary caliber, and just like a refreshing break time, it was nice to see a few familiar faces over the course of the unique stuff in this game.
Amazing video! Mario Galaxy 2 is my favorite Mario game of all time and in my top 5 favorite games of all time! The levels and music are so memorable in this game especially compared to the original!! Also, the power ups are amazing! The Boo power up was always my favorite since Boo was one of my favorite characters ever. Thank you so much for showing how amazing this game is!
The Galaxy series has been my one that got away, never played it before for some reason. But your videos have finally convinced me, picked up Galaxy the other day and i'm excited to give it a shot!
14:40 That was me for the Shiverburn, Puzzle Plank, Rolling Masterpiece, Hightail Falls and Tall Trunk Galaxies. Some of the best Mario levels ever made in my opinion!!
I honestly thought I was the only one who strongly prefers galaxy 2 to 1. I remember not really caring for galaxy 1 when I first played it but galaxy 2 quickly became one of my all time favorite games and my favorite Mario game. That title now belongs to Odyssey but I still love the hell out of Galaxy 2. Great review Nitro
Kiz Epic Journey sigh. Easy this easy that. I had fun and didn’t care about the low difficulty. Look I love super meat boy as much as the next guy but there’s more ways to make a game rewarding other than difficulty. And Nintendo knows this. Tbh tho, odyssey isn’t any easier than most games nowadays. My little cousin can’t even get past the lost kingdom smh yet he can play gta v wtf.
-Being a children's game is not a bad thing -If you really want to discuss video games, show some respect for the people who made it. Saying "no thought went into it" is untrue and insulting
Sam Blackmore that comment was two years ago so odyssey was fresh on my mind. After playing both galaxies again I can say galaxy 2 is still my favorite 3D Mario game. I still enjoy odyssey though
I have very fond memories of this game. I played it all the time when I was younger. We originally got it as a gift for my little brother, but he barely played it and I ended up playing it myself and loving it.
Love this game I forgot how beautiful the graphics are in this game and it's not even HD and its from 2009. Seeing this game reminds me that talent is an asset to crafting a visually stunning game.
1:27 lol, same, it was also the first Mario title I bought at launch. Discovered Galaxy some time before, loved it and was so hyped when I heared about Galaxy 2. I got it with a weird DVD manual I watched even tough I knew how to play just because it was there. Because I discovered Galaxy so shortly before the release of the sequel I compared both games all the time while playing. 2 had some cool new ideas but at the same time had things I didn't like -especially the green stars scattered around the levels, at least back then. Also was confused by the lack of any story, loved Galaxy for that.
Overall I'd say I like the original more, but as sequel it's just great. It has a lot of new stuff to make it feel fresh. I also liked how they ramped up the difficulty in comparison to 1 (not sure if everyone will agree they did), there's that pepper Yoshi level early in the game where you'll probably die a lot.
So happy that someone out there's justified my adoration for this game. Galaxy 1 was a masterpiece, but this was a legend. Both games are some of my absolute favorites of all time.
Yeah but now I'll also be able to review Luigi's Mansion Darkmoon this coming Halloween! I'll also finally get to review the Hotel Dusk duology and Elite Beat Agents!!!!
Nitro Rad Glad to hear you're putting it to good use. Can't wait for your next videos. You've quickly become one of my favourite youtubers. Keep up the great work, man!
I personally prefer the first game. The second game has better level design and stage gimmicks, but the first one has better atmosphere and a better story and ending. They are both masterpieces, but the first one stuck with me a bit more.
I absolutely understand that! Galaxy 1's story didn't click with me at allllll, so I suppose I found it much easier to have the level design and stage gimmicks stick out. Three months ago before replaying these games, I could maybe describe to you 3 stages from Galaxy 1 in detail, but I think I'd be able to describe at least 20 from Galaxy 2.
Story? Who cares. It’s no mass effect. It’s still a mediocre story compared to actual story driven games. Mario isn’t defined by story. Atmosphere? Sure. You got me there but that’s not enough to declare a game better. Ending? In terms of story, yes. Galaxy 1 definitely had an edge due to how much more cinematic and climatic it was. But still. If you’re talking about the final boss, that’s a different story. No pun intended. Both were disappointing but I thought galaxy 1 took the cake for disappointment there. At least galaxy 2 had a unique phase. Galaxy 1 was the exact same ‘make bowser pound the blue thing’ except give him a sonic spin dash.
I know alot of people don't like green star missions, but they were some of my favorite parts of the game. They allow you to understand the moveset and do cool things with them, and I like exploring the stage, even if it is linear. It also has a collectathon feel to it, and I really enjoy that. sure, super mario odyssey has done it way better, but they aren't too far apart in my opinion.
I'm so glad you praised Galaxy 2 and realized just how much it improved on the original. It makes me crazy when people claim it's just more of the same or even inferior to Galaxy 1. Not in this or any other Galaxy.
The thing about Luigi in this game- because you can switch between him and Mario throughout the game, I found myself not using Luigi as much as I did in the first game (mostly because it was a must in that game). Only once I realize how usefull and cool *some* of the Luigi ghosts that you unlocked by playing as Luigi are, then you are more encouraged to play as Luigi.
I'll be honest, it took me about six months to beat SMG2's Grandmaster Galaxy's comet back when I was 16 years old, the thing was so bloody brutal on me and it was pretty punishing, but after going through so much and beating everything else, it was a fantastic day when I beat it. Having Rosalina holding the final star and seeing her in the ship once you beat it though... Yeah, I don't know what else I was expecting. Godspeed, Nitro Rad, you make good content.
The huge grin on my face the moment I saw "Throwback Galaxy". Galaxy 2 was the first game in a long time that made me just feel so happy and giddy to get home and play more.
StarcoLover I'd actually argue that the one in Galaxy 1 felt more like a real boss, it's just so huge and menacing in comparison while Galaxy 2's drill boss feels more like a miniboss at most.
Even the music is way better in Galaxy 1. It makes you feel wayyy more threatened by that gigantic robot. The moment you get on one of his leg you get the police siren sound effect, bullet bills come at you, the machine is actually trying to defend itself. They could've probably expanded on this idea, maybe by making it harder for you to climb on it as the fight goes on or making it so the boss would actually try to kill you and not wander aimlessly... The galaxy 2 equivalent of that boss (Digga Leg) is very subpar. The only attack he has is sending mini drills at you (which, not only are easily killed by you, most of the time they will just get crushed by the boss itself), the music, while awesome, doesn't create any tention, it take 3 hits to kill and the only thing that makes this fight a boss fight is the fact that it's pretty frustrating to get to his weak point in the third stage.
Yeah dude! I totally agree with you! This game is freaking SICK! I don't think it's possible for a Mario game to be truly "underrated", but man, so many people say this game is just Galaxy 1... but more. I thought it was really nice how Nintendo saw they had something going and took time to perfect it before overhauling everything. I'm all for innovation, but a game doesn't need be innovative to be amazing.
All toasters toast toast except this game is innovative. And it’s LITERALLY CALLED galaxy fucking 2. A sequel. Ppl wanted more of galaxy and WE GOT MORE OF IT.
Yeah, I know. I meant nothing bad about the game. In fact I think this game is amazing and creative, it's just not as innovative as 64 or Galaxy 1 in my opinion. That doesn't really matter to me, because they innovation Nintendo sacrificed was worth it to get one of the best Mario games ever.
I remember getting Super Mario Galaxy on the first day of release back when I was still in 3ed grade and having some fun with it. I didn't finish it because I was really intimidated by the prankster comets ,the thought of a game over, (For some reason.) and because going through the final stage without a hit is apparently out of my league. If there's one thing I love about this game, it's the soundtrack. With my favorites being Puzzle plank's stage theme, Flip swap's stage theme, Bowser Jr's stage theme, The bouy base stage theme(Does that count?), Melty monster's stage theme, and chompworks stage theme.
I see you are a man of great taste. Galaxy 2 is easily, easily better than 1. It's genius level design, difficulty curves, bonus content, vs just solid design in Galaxy 1. I liked green stars, some of them are devilishly hard and fun to figure out
I'm glad there's someone out there that adores Galaxy 2 as much as I do. I love Galaxy 1, but Galaxy 2's consistent output in creative level design gets me all the time. It stresses me a bit when people say Galaxy 2 is just the same game. Yeah the engine is the same, but dammit the levels say otherwise. Kinda sad that I might be the only one that loved the Green Stars entirely. If you don't think of it as something that's required but rather extra, they feel a lot more satisfying to get rather than a crawl to get them all.
A vast improvement from the first game. The atmosphere was much better and bringing back elements from sunshine and 64 really helped with the atmosphere. Made the game a lot more enjoyable.

Wow, a Nitro Rad video IS uploaded on my birthday!
I know how it feels now. It feels gooooooood.
happy birthday
Happy birthdaaaayyy
Happy birthday!!
Luckyyyy
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Thanks for reminding me why this is my favorite game of all time. Great video my man
I just got Galaxy 2 a few days ago and started playing it today, and I must say, the first impressions are definitely much better than in Galaxy, and this is coming from someone who ADORED Galaxy. Definitely the better Galaxy game, in my opinion.
Goddamn, the video looks so much better with the slight yellow de-saturation!
11:25 don't tell rayman 2 about this part
Hey Joey! Any top tens planned?
He protect he attack but most importantly he almost back
But it's one of the fastest games.
I think that what really soured most people about Galaxy 2 was the fact that it has one of the worst final bosses in a Mario game. It's like the developers were suddenly too lazy to make a well designed final boss and made it near impossible to die! Can't believe you did not mention the shitty final boss :(
Same dude
The final boss is bad and extremely disapointed
I thought he would bring it up but nothing
I still think the final boss of Yoshi's new Island is 666 times worse.
It's not much different from Super Mario World's final boss fight. It's so piss easy. The koopalings are tougher than Bowser himself.
Zachary Putnam Well thats mario games for you. 😁
Something else I noticed is that the camera is much better in Galaxy 2. In Galaxy, the camera could easily get the wrong angle and get blocked by the level. In Galaxy 2, the camera has much better angles and it doesn't let objects block your view.
It would be pretty ironic if this video got fewer views than the original Galaxy video.
I'm 100% expecting that to happen.
Don't jinx it!.
Why would that happen
Galaxy 2 has more of a cheerful vibe to it that makes me like it quite a bit more than the original (I think a level like Cloudy Court Galaxy kinda reinforces that for me).
You should hear the Cosmic Cove Galaxy song again. I swear I was about to cry.
Yesss!!! I know how you feel! Like, holy crap that stage just like completely enchanted me.
This was my first ever video game. Went back to it a while back, and it STILL holds up. Absolutely fantastic.
I just finished Odyssey and Galaxy 2 is still my favorite SM.
thankyou for sharing to the world the greatness of mario galaxy 2
hopefully more people will expirence the amazing game that it is
I don't understand how you don't have more subs my dude, you put so much work into these videos and you're extremely entertaining. Good luck man keep it up.
This game is literally the best goddamn game I’ve ever played.
So true
Spoiler in 3D Land for your review:
There's a grandmaster level in 3D Land as well. Didn't seem like you knew.
A Blob it didn’t come as a result of necessity for dedication like this.
@@jacobmeade1045 yes it did
Glad I finally know someone who loves Galaxy 2 just as much as I do

StaySkeptic Well I did say I enjoyed it. It’s not unreasonable to be critical of something you enjoy.
StaySkeptic The fuck is that supposed to mean?
There are so many good pieces like Sky station Galaxy, Space storm Galaxy, Throwback galaxy, Fluffy bluff Galaxy, Cosmic coves Galaxy, Starshine beach Galaxy, etc.
dude i frickin love galaxy 2, i should replay it some time
Love to hear such positivity about a game that is one of the first videogames I really got into!
Galaxy 2 is still, to this day, one of my favourite games of all time.
I know it's not Halloween but...do more horror games please!
Be did one last week.
He*
He should do some indie horrors
Now it is pretty much
As a kid, Throwback Galaxy and the Piantas had me extremely hyped. There were levels of extraordinary caliber, and just like a refreshing break time, it was nice to see a few familiar faces over the course of the unique stuff in this game.
"Don't get mad get money" respect.
I love how enthusiastic you are about some games, you gush about your enjoyment and add so much fun to watching
"Don't get mad. Get money." -Nitro Rad 2018
This game will always be amazing to me.
The Galaxy series has been my one that got away, never played it before for some reason. But your videos have finally convinced me, picked up Galaxy the other day and i'm excited to give it a shot!
RIP Super Mario Galaxy 2
Game’s not in Super Mario 3D All-Stars
Annoying since it’s far superior to Galaxy 1
Yvonne Exell Well yes..?
@Ivan Exell um duh but it still sucks it's not here
7:01 I've owned this game for at least 6 years, and I've 100% it twice and I never knew that.
At the end of galaxy 1, the universe actually gets reset, so I think that luma basically is reincarnated
I love both games. They're both excellent.
-Being a children's game is not a bad thing
-If you really want to discuss video games, show some respect for the people who made it. Saying "no thought went into it" is untrue and insulting
Bro how can you prefer odyssey over this?
Sam Blackmore that comment was two years ago so odyssey was fresh on my mind. After playing both galaxies again I can say galaxy 2 is still my favorite 3D Mario game. I still enjoy odyssey though
I’ve been marathoning your videos on the main Mario series for the past day or so. Loving your content!
Chargin' Chucks are in 3D World and Odyssey!
And they sick at léase from what i seen in 3d world
Later games
I have very fond memories of this game. I played it all the time when I was younger. We originally got it as a gift for my little brother, but he barely played it and I ended up playing it myself and loving it.
8:09 He released his inner Dunkey!
Love this game I forgot how beautiful the graphics are in this game and it's not even HD and its from 2009.
Seeing this game reminds me that talent is an asset to crafting a visually stunning game.
Super Mario Galaxy 2>Super Mario Galaxy
Nitroxity same
James omg you didn't need to buy that card for a review son holy shit.
14:20 Chargin' Chucks were in 3D World and Odyssey.
I personally prefer the first game. The second game has better level design and stage gimmicks, but the first one has better atmosphere and a better story and ending. They are both masterpieces, but the first one stuck with me a bit more.
That's cool but I prefer more polished and fun gameplay :)
I consider them one game. One fucking amazing video game.
Gameplay>Story
Story?
Not in this or any other Galaxy.
shadow it's just some shit about story or atmosphere or whatever
TerrorOfTalos which is crazy to me as a reason to prefer the original
TerrorOfTalos lol atmosphere is like, 1/100 of what makes a game great. I don't get it when people say that
People also play games to have a magical expirience, to play with their emotions.
yung muney both are magical. Very magical. The peak of Nintendo magic.
This is definitely better gameplay wise than the first one.
Hope to see more 3DS games than just 3D Land reviewed if you've spent all that on a capture card!
Agreed
But that's about it. We have 2D games, adventure puzzle games, car games, oh yeah, they ported Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World to the 3DS.
Still mad it's not in all stars
Holy crap props on your introduction to the game.
I've never seen you this happy
I'll be honest, it took me about six months to beat SMG2's Grandmaster Galaxy's comet back when I was 16 years old, the thing was so bloody brutal on me and it was pretty punishing, but after going through so much and beating everything else, it was a fantastic day when I beat it. Having Rosalina holding the final star and seeing her in the ship once you beat it though... Yeah, I don't know what else I was expecting. Godspeed, Nitro Rad, you make good content.
It took me an hour
Charging Chucks are in 3D World and Odyssey
The huge grin on my face the moment I saw "Throwback Galaxy". Galaxy 2 was the first game in a long time that made me just feel so happy and giddy to get home and play more.
Talks about the drill boss in smg2.
Doesn't even mention the TRIPEDAL ROBOT FROM THE FIRST GAME.
I'm disappointed.
maybe because the galaxy 2 boss is better and actually feels like a boss battle unlike the galaxy 1 boss.
Tripedal 100 foot tall robot*
@@Devin11246 the first one was a challenge planet rather than a boss
I like how you posted this video exactly the day I finished galaxy 1. My 3D Mario journey is almost ending and I still don't have a switch.
This got recommended to me for some reason. I love your enthusiasm! The review was amazing. Subscribed - nice job!
Most creative game to ever be made
I remember getting Super Mario Galaxy on the first day of release back when I was still in 3ed grade and having some fun with it. I didn't finish it because I was really intimidated by the prankster comets ,the thought of a game over, (For some reason.) and because going through the final stage without a hit is apparently out of my league.
If there's one thing I love about this game, it's the soundtrack. With my favorites being
Puzzle plank's stage theme, Flip swap's stage theme, Bowser Jr's stage theme, The bouy base stage theme(Does that count?), Melty monster's stage theme, and chompworks stage theme.
i find nothing wrong with this video, so all i can do to help you give this game justice is quote mario himself:
SUPER MARIO GALAXY! TWO!
No it's more like Super Mario Galaxy Two hoo!, but of course if you played the game you'd know that he doesn't actually say the 2 part.
I see you are a man of great taste. Galaxy 2 is easily, easily better than 1. It's genius level design, difficulty curves, bonus content, vs just solid design in Galaxy 1. I liked green stars, some of them are devilishly hard and fun to figure out
The 2 BEST Mario games are hands down, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. Whatever you like more is really just your choice.
Very true! Galaxy 2 and Odyssey are two very different types of Mario games, but both of them refined their version of the formula to a freakin T!
Nintendo not including Galaxy 2 in 3D All-Stars should be considered a criminal offense.
I hate you Nitro Rad, I was trying to do homework, now I can’t...
do your fricken homework or i'll send 1000 mechakoopas to your house to own you into oblivion
Im a the only one that watch this to see what i am goin to miss in mario 3d all stars?
A vast improvement from the first game. The atmosphere was much better and bringing back elements from sunshine and 64 really helped with the atmosphere. Made the game a lot more enjoyable.
