What do you think about fighting game tierlists? Do you think they matter? Do you take them seriously? Any time I start a new fighting game I don't look at tier lists really because I don't really think they matter unless you're good. tier lists are fine as points of discussion (and pretty much only that). in that vein i actually really, really enjoy tier lists because they show differences in scenes and differences in tier lists can show differences in thoughts on the state of the game. i think that thinking about and talking about that is fine. the problem always comes from when people try to make decisions based on tier lists. doesn't matter if they're top tier, you need to learn the match-up. doesn't matter if they're low tier, they can still knowledge check you. fighting games are great.

Ya Bear's buttons may be fast but he has no range, low damage, and very few mix up options. His game plan gets a little repetitive with strike throw being really the only thing he can do. He aint even got an invincible reversal...
Hopefully they buff him in the new patch :( he needs better pokes and okizeme. Ex paw needs to be +15 on hit

i find tier lists good as a sort of "state of the meta" type of thing, at least for me personally. like i don't follow a lot of fighting games' pro scenes, but seeing folks like Brian_F make up tier lists while also giving commentary as to WHY they're where they are and stuff helps me see what the meta values, what characters take advantage of the meta the best, et cetera. i don't like using it as a Top 10 Strongest Characters list because fuck that, i don't care how weak omega rugal is, i'm USING him, but i think tier lists do have value in a more roundabout way.
big agree! I still watch Brian's tierlists when they come out because they're interesting insight into a part of the meta I don't get to see at my level of play

For a while now I've been focusing too much on tier list to make sure I don't pick a high tier, that way I can't be accused of tier picking or being carried by my character... while I am actually tier picking instead of feel picking, just not the top end.
I hate forcing myself to play a character. If I get nothing out of their personality, aesthetic, playstyle, anything, then playing them just becomes a chore. If youre not enjoying the learning process for them, youll never even start to approach the higher potential the tier list says they have

Tier lists are for competitive play and rank grinders. I'm a filthy casual from the arcade era where a tier list doesn't matter because I'm fighting the same 10 dudes all night.

I'm glad to find with a UA-camr with a sense of humour in regards to tier lists and such. :)
Personally, I don't care about tier lists that much, although they give me insight on community's perception on a given topic like favourite videogames, food or playable characters in a fighting game.
My personal gripe with tier lists is that they tend to be misused and encourage a narrowminded, black-and-white thinking as well as discourage open-minded discussion.
The latter I find repulsing as a natural individualist.

Who is the UA-camr you had on the tier list? I know/like the four you listed and Core-A Gaming, but who are the others? I might like them too.
I never really liked the prospect of Teir Lists because I feel that people only look at the list and ignore a lot of other important parts of fighting games. It's a fact that some charatcers are better than others, but that's only part of the equation. The other part is the player themselves. If a player plays a high tier charatcer but dosen't fully understand them or the game, they won't get the power of said charatcer. On another note, a player can sometimes just not vibe with a high tier character, and instead use a lower tier one. I find that if you play with a character you enjoy more, you'll do better with them vs the person who is only Tier picking. If you favortie charatcer happens to be high tier then great! But I have seen some NASTY shit from people who really like a character, even if they are low tier.
Cool new avatar. Have you tough about making a "coming back fighting games" video? I took a long ass break from KOF XV due to Elden Ring, but everyone has moved forward, and I feel like I forget what few I've learned from that game

I agree that tier lists are pretty much useless at lower levels of play in modern fighting games. We can have fun memeing about how certain charcters are overpowered (occasionally they actually are) but at the end of the day we are long past the time when part of the cast was literally unplayable. Just play what you enjoy and respect each other.
Hrm, I feel like most tier lists are cursed by inconsistency and subjectivity. Especially subjectivity.
But I think they should factor in way more than just their optimal performance, right? Like their basic entry level - what can get someone started on learning the fighter. "A minute to pick up, a lifetime to perfect" - that kinda deal.

Potemkin is easily my favourite strive character and people say he is low tier which i call bullshit as a tierlist hater and what i find most annoying is when people say if you don't care about winning then pick anyone you want and i care about winning so what does that mean i can't play Potemkin? Honestly i just can't handle how much i bloody hate tierlists
While they can bring up discussions, at the end of the day, it’s all in good fun.

I've never consulted tier lists when picking characters. I play Terumi in BBCF, because I love how big of an asshole he is, and stomping on the opponents face 27 times with a single super is hilarious, as is watching their meter rapidly deplete from the OD enhanced 4D-j.2D loops into 632146D. I also play Mai in BBCF because of her personality (also her "personality"), and because waifu. I play Hazama and Adachi in BBTAG because Terumi's not in the game, also they removed the limit on Hazama's Ouroboros. I play Orie in UNI because waifu. I played Hero in Smash ultimate because I love Dragon Quest, and was hyped for the representation. Then I played Pyra/Mythra because waifus (are you sensing a pattern here?).
Tier lists have they're value, and I tend to check where my favorites end up, but they don't factor into who I play at all.

i usually play low tiers because they have the most fun gameplay

When I get into a multi-player game. I find a character I like. Play them a bit. Then look at a tier list. If they're good. "Oh cool. They're fun." If they're bad. "Oh cool. They're fun." I often end up playing low tier characters. Because grapplers are just usually low tier. And hey, they're fun.
there's also a factor of how a character fits with your style. An A tier in someone else's hands might be an S tier for me because of how i play. Like, that wouldn't change the character's ranking on a tier list, obviously, but choosing a character just because they're in S tier with no other consideration is insane to me

I know it's not a traditonal fighter, but I have seen some people who play Low Tier charatcers in Smash Ultiamte do some NASTY shit. I really feel that if you play charatcer who sucks but that you like, you'll usually do better than the person who's just tier picking.

I care far less about tier lists than I do the characters the top players use. I don't care who is theoretically best, I just want to play a character that has had tangible success and a good player to steal tech from.

I was recommended by a local player to drop Potemkin in Strive because he believes I will have a better time with the game playing a character with better match-ups. I've been scouring the roster and I can't find any character that would fit the bill. Even though Sol was jokingly mentioned as a better grappler character.

I'm just tired of S-tier having 5+ characters. S-tier is for the characters with frame data coded by God himself. Nowadays, fighters are more balanced and the power gap between high and low tier not as wide. You can just use A+ to F tier. Or better yet, reject tier lists, return to -monke- match-up charts.
So instead of a simplified tier chart of putting every character in a ranking, you have a personal chart for every character that list comparisons to every other character, in the form of win loss percentage rates?

tier list are fine, real, and have an impact at all levels of play, higher tier characters generally have better neutral and conversion than LT characters, though its a game and having fun with what you like and are comfortable with should be the priority
