I recommend it on any DIYers reverse their bolt removal order, those back bolts are very tight and can tweak if you leave them for last. My filter slipped down when I was doing it, and it prevented me from pushing the front bolt back into the transmission to provide access like they managed.
Great video - thanks much! I plan on doing my truck soon as it doesn't seem like too hard of a job. The toughest thing is not spilling the oil all over! One thing I did notice is at 1:50 he says 15 bolts but I only count 14.

I forgot in my that to tap the holes back . A ball pine hammer works the best to do that and when you see the circles appear you have taped it enough . Thank You
To be honest me as working on cars and stuff I think every transmission pan should have a drain plug and then remove the pan to clean the inside transmission filter and other components to me it will be less of a mess ... Matter of fact when it's getting close to my transmission changing I think I might add a plug if it's possible
Would it be the same process and torque spec for a first gen expedition? Also if there is no knowledge of a pan drop flush with a vehicle that has 150k. Is this still recommended to do?
Hi I installed a new pan and dealership gasket and i still get a drip from the farthest back bolts. I did everything in this video, do you have any suggestions? Should I use black rtv? The old pan had ridges in the bolt holes FYI thank you and stay safe .
The òne thing that I don't see on any of the videos about this is if you have a replacement gasket that doesn't have the circles where the pan bolts go through what I do is with the inside of the pan up I tap at the bolt holes and you will see little circles around each hole appear and that is designed to collapse to seal without leaking or deformity the pan . This is factory old school but I have never had a leak in 30 + yrs as a mechanic. This works on ant stamped pan or valve cover in my opinion and experience. TAP NOT HAMMER NOW !!! THANKS ..
1998 Ford F150 4wd, 5.4L V8 Triton, Automatic Transmission 1. While running in park a clunking noise occurs 2. if youre already at high mileage changing out the dirtier fluid may allow an automatic trans to slip, if you use a trans flush machine to change it you may push gunk around in your trans and mess it up worse during service. if the trans is serviced more regularly it isnt a big deal on either count.if you have a high mileage, unserviced trans you may just want to look for an additive like lucas trans fix/slip stop. it isnt a miracle fluid but it'll add some life back into the trans if you use it right
So my dad is giving me his old 2002 v8 Ford Expedition. It has roughly 220,000 miles on it. He said he's never had the transmission fluid changed. When I checked the dipstick, it still has some faint red on it and the car still feels smooth. Do I even bother changing the fluid at this point? I hear very conflicting answers.
Would you please tell me: Is the hole where the dip stick goes the same hole that transmission fluid should be put into if low? I'm specifically asking about a 1989 Ford E-150 (not F as shown in this video).
few days ago i buy one truck ford f150 4.9l 6 2wd auto. When i put drive reverse the transmission is jerk all the truck lean. the transmission fluid is brown. is safe i put new fluid and filter?
Hi, I have. 1998 4.6 f150 and I just changed the spark plugs and cables along with a new MAF sensor and it was running fine for a week. This week I added a radiator flush for a couple of days and my transmission started to feel sluggish(3 days into driving) & it was empty when I checked it. I pour a little bit of oil and the meter stick shows that it has too much. I drive it, it begins to show signs of sluggishness and it’s empty again. Didn’t see any leaks in my parking spot or anywhere the car has been parked. I’m thinking it could be a cooling hose but I was hoping to get maybe some advice before I go to war w the transmission. Thanks and thanks for posting your videos. 👍 stay safe everyone ......
Wouldn’t be better if spray break cleaner straight to the differential for a better cleaning.? You ll still have dirty old oil mixing with the new clean oil.
Ive changed the filter and fluid on my 03 f150, and it fixed the shudder and loss of power, but now it hesitates when going into first. Someone with any advice please help
+Gary Baldwin Unfortunately we cannot really accurately diagnose that. We would advise you take it to a trustworthy mechanic in your area that can look at it in person
What is best gasket to use??? Cork or rubber?? And also I replace with new rubber and it started leaking day after.. Could pan be messed up? Damged? Making gasket not seal??
Hi friend, this is a great video and wanted to mentioned that I had a small accident with my 2005 4x4 F150 (broke the oil cooler and the oil leaked while driving), after a few miles I stopped and had to be towed back home. I'm in Canada and the truck has 270,000 km, got it one year ago and don't know any mechanic history of it at all. I have the new oil cooler and wanted to know if I should change the filter now that is "empty", and if you know how much oil I may have lost and how much oil would require to bring it to the correct level?
Is it normal for the dipstick to leave a dirty mark on the paper towel with otherwise healthy pink fluid, or does this indicate a problem? I'm driving a 1997 F150. Thanks in advance!
+DJ RaptorXS If you just changed the fluid and did not clean the stick, this is more than likely why its leaving these spots. It also may be due to the fact the dipstick is old and eroding, you may want to get a new one to prevent any marks, or give it a good clean.
@@1AAuto the orange seal of the old filter came out very easily for you. I tried using a pick like you did, but my seal just crumbles but still doesn't come out of the transmission. HELP! How can I get the old seal out? I've got a few tiny pieces of it out, but most of it is stuck in the groves of the port on the transmission! When I use a pick or hook, the seal just kinda breaks apart but it's still stuck in there. Such a PITA! I've wasted a lot of time on that dumb orange seal. Any tips, advice, suggestions???? Thanks!
How many miles did that truck have? If it’s never been serviced and has 150k miles then won’t it do more damage to the transmission? Slippage starting etc? That’s what I heard if you’re not doing it every 50k miles. Just curious. Thanks
when you lowered the lid, along with the oil there was a piece of plastic, when reinstalling the lid you don't see where you put the piece. I would like to know where the plastic piece goes

❓ ❓The only thing missing is you forgot to drain the Torque Converter Plug that holds 2-4qts because with all the fluid it holds 13.2 quarts

I've heard some people say never change your transmission fluid or filter that it will cause the transmission to start having problems.

Thanks a lot for the video. Is it necessary to put some gasket maker (like permatex ultra-grey)?

Turns out it is the same hole, per mechanic and manual, at least for my vehicle and likely for at least some others.
Yes
why did you not use the old gasket as identified on the pan?

Ok I have a 1997 ford f150 xl 4.6L V8 automatic, the owners manual is telling me 13 plus quarts of transmission fluid. Is this right?
Why didn't you remove the hose and drain the other 8 Quarts? Is this not recommended?
You could do it, but if your just following fords guidlines then this js what they say to do
It shouldn’t be there really because the previous person should of removed it. Ford says the gasket is reusable as long as it isn’t damaged.

Question, would it be safe to use an impact wrench? Thanks 4 ur video.
We would not suggest using an impact wrench as this creates a higher chance of over torquing the bolts. Hope this helps you out. +Rosalio Garcia

Or over tightening your hardware, and or not tightening down the pan and gasket evenly by using the criss cross pattern shown

How do you put 15 bolts into 14 holes on the pan?
Drill another hole right in the middle of the pan
Kind of scary that the only thing holding the filter in place is that little orange o-ring.
What's the exact torque you put. I heard 10.
He did 10 ft/lbs
Forgot to drain the torque converter
anyone know what kind of transmission
fluid is needed for a 2002 f-150 8 cylinder 4.6 liter
Did you ever find out what kind of transmission fluid is needed?
Mercon V
Number of bolts is 14 not 15 fyi.

the plastic gets thrown out, its only in the pan to show you if its been serviced before or not, hope this helps
When he washed the pan, he told us to throw it away. Put in at factory. This way you know the pan has never been off

Didn't drain the torque converter or clean oil cooler core! Very unprofessonal to leave 7 or 8 quarts of that nasty fluid in that W70.
My thoughts exactly. Why didn't they change it?
It was about 01/02 when they stopped putting in the tc drain plug
Where is that located?
That’s not a removable cover on that torque converter.
With the amount of miles that thing has it’s not recommended to due a full flush
Will a 98 tranny fit the 04
Will a 98 tranny out of f150 fit in a 04 f150 both have 5.4 both 4x4 ?
