Thank-you for a concise and articulate presentation of the facts about how our bodies manage protein and what recent studies are saying about how much daily protein we need.
Brilliant video Dr Fung putting to bed certain myths surrounding Protein, promulgated by longevity experts responding to this or that new medical paper or research.. I'm a 55 year old male, that resumed a routine of fasting regularly immediate upon being diagnosed with prediabetes. I followed a stringent self imposed regime doing consecutive 72 hour fasts commencing at the beginning of each week for a period of 12 weeks. I'm metabolically flexible, so was soon able to adapt to the strain of fasting. I exercised daily, regularly performing both cardio and some strength training focusing on body weight calisthenics and simple dumb bells exercises at home. Without consuming protein powders or any advertised body building supplementation. Eating modest amounts of protein and sticking mainly to my regular diet that consisted of eating 3 to 4 eggs and one to two tins of sardines everyday. I believe, empirically, I have put on muscle losing body fat around my belly, reducing my waist size from 43 inches to 34 inch in circumference now.
Ahh, this is impressive. I recall seeing Dr Fung doing a lunch lecture to doctors some years ago and many were too interested in the food and chatting to others.
I agree. I too fell on the high protein train..yet eating about 40 grams of protein daily gave me a great bone density scan. I'm 59 and 5'5". Glad Dr. Fung's voice of reason is out there. Si much advice from non doctors and non scientists.

Pandemic brought back some poor lifestyle habits, I have gained weight, lost muscle. Well, I gain more weight, and the changes in the gym are not better or worst than with fasting. So, I am happily back to a fasting routine and moderate protein, as I can maintain that and if fits my lifestyle!

A much needed topic to be clearly explained. No one need to doubt it as it's from a medical expert and that too explained with proof... He is just amazing🙏🙏
And over time, lack of protein can make you lose muscle mass, which cuts your strength, makes it harder to keep your balance, and slows your metabolism. It can lead to anemia, which makes you tired. However, I don't think that fasting itself is what causes this. Chronic lack or reduction would.
Guys, please understand the characteristics of Dr. Fung's patients. I remember Peter Attia once asked Dr. Fung about muscle loss during fasting on his podcast. Dr. Fung's response was very pragmatic: my patients are not bodybuilders; my patients are elderly, obese, and have kidney problems. And he did not observe muscle loss in his patients during fasting. I am currently also pursuing a lean body. I am targeting a daily intake of 100 grams of protein with a meal sequence of high fiber, high protein, and low carb. I also do resistance training and walk for 30 minutes every day. If I don't practice OMAD (One Meal A Day) with discipline, my weight, waist circumference, body fat, and visceral fat will continue to increase. So in my opinion, the advice of moderate protein intake is suitable for most people. For those aiming for muscle gain, consume high protein but practice disciplined cutting with fasting.
Exactly. When I was in my early thirties, I was lifting weights several hours a week, but I was getting pretty modest gains. I was telling one of the trainers at the gym that one day, and she asked, "Well maybe you need to change your supplement." I was like, ""What supplement? I don't take any supplements." She hooked me up with a pretty simple protein supplement, and I was shocked at how quickly I started putting on a lot more muscle. Yeah, a regular person may not want or need protein supplements, but if you want to get the most out of weight lifting, I think you do.
Focus on achieving the health biomarkers you aim for, such as waist circumference, HbA1C, fasting insulin, blood pressure, SGPT/ALT, uric acid, triglycerides, and HDL. Achieve this through fasting combined with a high-fiber, moderate-protein, low-carb, and low-deep-fry diet. Exercise for 30 minutes daily; walking is the easiest exercise for everyone. Consuming 100 grams of protein per day, equivalent to 14 eggs, is not an enjoyable process, and achieving your health biomarker targets will be challenging with a high-protein diet. Once your health biomarker targets are achieved, switch to a high-protein diet with resistance training.
Not even necessary. I read a study a couple of weeks ago where they found exercises in a fasted state or with protein didn't yield any significant difference. I work out in a fasted state (20-24 hours) and I'm quite shredded, and that's with a combination of cardio and calisthenics. 100 grams of protein daily is like 4 burgers a day
I needed this after finishing Peter Attia's Outlive. :D Fasting works really well for me, but I also do eat plenty of protein when I do eat (and regular fasting actually makes me less interested in unhealthy foods), and lift heavy weights three times a week.
keep in mind that strength is not always related to muscles. The sole act of practicing an exercise increases the neuromuscular adaptation that makes one stronger, even without anabolism. Also, creatine/phosphate + adrenaline can give you short bursts of strength, but longer sessions will make you hit the wall.

Alas--all three are overweight! I am in great shape at age 76--130lbs at 5'8"--my doctor tells me I have even influenced her and wishes I could talk to her patients. I eat around 60-75 grams of protein per day with a snack meal at noon and dinner at 5 or so--between 16-20 hours of fasting every day. Thank you Dr. Fung.
Thanks!
You have convinced me with your teachings , and I am a contentious student.
Have been consistent with iIntermittent Fasting 18 hours most days.

As much as I appreciate Dr Fung for bringing out the obvious facts about fasting. He is not the person I listen to about building a healthy muscular body. Nor will I listen to him on how to maintain muscle mass as I age. I am a 60 year old woman at 5'2" 124 pounds my protein intake goal is 110 grams or more.I am on zero meds
Look at centenarios , they fast it and dint have that much proteins
Thought of doing your own podcast and opening your own clinic, write a few books and treat patients ?
Wow. Just started listening to Dr Fung. He communicates this valuable info so clearly. Very beneficial to his fellow humans. Bless him! ❤
Let me start by thanking you for uploading various episodes on diabetes I have been fasting 8 hours during the day and 14 hours at night I no longer use medication
Thanks and God bless you
Valuable insights.
I too have found my lifts in gym be more impressive if I train fasted. At times I am starving while I goto gym & to my surprise I am able to train with greater intensity & strength
Dr. Fung, you’re a blessing to many who are wise enough to know great wisdom and knowledge when we see it and hear it. Thank you so much sir. God bless you. ✝️🙏🏽❤️
I just found Dr Fung online and things are finally making sense to me. Thank you!
I recommend three of his books, The Obesity Code, The Diabetes Code, and The Cancer Code.. and I that order.
the real deal, this guy really knows his stuff
This is such good news because ive been struggling trying to eat the "recomended protein by these gurus" and ive had a really difficult time losing weight, im going to try and eat a lower amount
Balance is the key to a healthier, happier life. Love this approach!
Very eye opening! Thank you. There is much misinformation regarding protein supplements.
Dr. Fung is an excellent resource for fasting knowledge.
He’s also among the wise folks in the documentary: ‘Fat Fiction’
Thank you for posting this... it doesn't seem natural to eat as much protein as some of these experts are recommending
Thank-you for a concise and articulate presentation of the facts about how our bodies manage protein and what recent studies are saying about how much daily protein we need.
Great video. Very well researched. Thank you!
Plz more on fasting and muscle loss cause its the only topic that sets me back. thansk jason
Thank you for this!!! I am one of the people that stressed because I couldn’t eat 125gms a day of protein!! I now can relax and eat when hungry.
I agree. I too fell on the high protein train..yet eating about 40 grams of protein daily gave me a great bone density scan. I'm 59 and 5'5". Glad Dr. Fung's voice of reason is out there. Si much advice from non doctors and non scientists.
Exactly! When i try to eat a 120 gm of protein a day I gain weight. It's too much food.
We love you, Dr. Fung! Thanks so much for gifting us this valuable information! ✨️
High Protein is one of the Biggest Myths of our Times ! Thnx Dr.Fung for confirming that too !
Sir sorry I want ask...if I do omad....one meal a day eat 30/40gram protien a day enuf?
@@aimansulong-np6yr Even on Single Big meal will contain 40-50 + Proteins ! if it is well-balanced from whole food plant sources ! For ex : beans/lentils big bowl will in itself contain 30 grams +... surround it with veggies a, nuts, fruits etc and you have 50-60 easy... !
@@bobrik335 so okey if we only take 50/60 gram protien a day right?
I think it's depend on your height and weight and what is your goal. Either it's for lose weight..to maintain or to built muscle. @@aimansulong-np6yr
iv eaten 200g or more and still lost body fat keeping sugars and white carbs low.
Excellent Excellent vid Dr. Fung. This is the thought that crosses my mind oftentimes.
I love his videos ❤ such a pleasure to watch Jason Fung ❤
Anything the FDA says I just do the opposite. I recommend reading “Health and Beauty Mastery” by Julian Bannet, that book is a real eye opener about shocking stuff health industry is doing! I completely changed my habits
totally agree
This book is scam
Be careful people
I’ve been saying that for years. The FDA is a great institution. Just do the exact opposite of what they say and you are Golden.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve never heard of that book
@@FireOElijahMC it's a scam
This is so helpful! I’m a vegetarian so I use protein shakes to ensure I get enough protein. But I’ve wanted to get away from using the shakes. This makes me feel confident that I can.
Timing is perfect! I had great success in 2019 fasting and being consistent in a the gym. I felt amazing, was strong and healthy. Pandemic brought back some poor lifestyle habits, I have gained weight, lost muscle. I have been searching for ways to get back into a sustainable lifestyle again, and got caught up in the guru’s talking about not fasting, I have been forcing myself to eat multiple meals with tons of protein. Well, I gain more weight, and the changes in the gym are not better or worst than with fasting. So, I am happily back to a fasting routine and moderate protein, as I can maintain that and if fits my lifestyle!
Same exact story here!
I cant believe this is free
Thank you so much for this. Takes all my worries out of extended fasting
Dr. Joao Sorio gives very transparent advice on diet and nutrition.
Great presentation by great presenter. Direct focused head on without wasting time and energy.
My God Dr Fung,I’m learning a lot from you,Thank you so much.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Crystal clear and highly valuable true health knowledge, thank you Dr. Fung.
Love Dr. Fung. Hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Thanks for all of the info !
A much needed topic to be clearly explained. No one need to doubt it as it's from a medical expert and that too explained with proof... He is just amazing🙏🙏
Excellent, as always. Thanks!
And over time, lack of protein can make you lose muscle mass, which cuts your strength, makes it harder to keep your balance, and slows your metabolism. It can lead to anemia, which makes you tired. However, I don't think that fasting itself is what causes this. Chronic lack or reduction would.
Amazing!!! thanks a lot Dr. Fung for your generosity.
@@alexwijoyong , I’m with you. I preach Dr. Fung all day to people.
Not even necessary. I read a study a couple of weeks ago where they found exercises in a fasted state or with protein didn't yield any significant difference. I work out in a fasted state (20-24 hours) and I'm quite shredded, and that's with a combination of cardio and calisthenics. 100 grams of protein daily is like 4 burgers a day
@@brainchamber99 It is carbohydrates that makes the difference in performance during resistance training, not protein.
I needed this after finishing Peter Attia's Outlive. :D Fasting works really well for me, but I also do eat plenty of protein when I do eat (and regular fasting actually makes me less interested in unhealthy foods), and lift heavy weights three times a week.
Been fasting for 1,5 years now (mostly OMAD)
I lost 10kg of weight,
got more active , less fatigue
and stronger in gym
keep in mind that strength is not always related to muscles. The sole act of practicing an exercise increases the neuromuscular adaptation that makes one stronger, even without anabolism. Also, creatine/phosphate + adrenaline can give you short bursts of strength, but longer sessions will make you hit the wall.
Thank you Dr. Fung! 70+ age with bronchiectasis, I discovered you in 2020 when I looked for ways to enhance immunity during COVID. Your fasting advice has been life changing.
Thank you for your grounded common sense and straight talk!
I've just started a 36 hr water fast; have been wanting to do one for ages. I hope this ongoing cold get better too; that will be a bonus.
All the best to you. Be kind to yourself, especially after the fast.
@@AzaleaBee - thanks; I am ok, but after 23 hrs, was feeling terrible - weak, shaky, dry wretching. yes, ty - I will be kind to myself; can't wait to eat at 8:30 tonight.
@Amanda_downunder Salt. Possibly.. or just your body isn't used to fasting. Enjoy your "break-fast".
Thank you Dr. Fung!!! We appreciate your knowledge and expertise!! 👍😉👌
Thank you for your constant explanations regarding our health.

Thank you, Dr Fung. You're great! You are my Dr. online. 😊
Always clear and to the point. I really appreciate your analysis of the research done on the topic
Doc thanks for this video. I've had several Dexa scans and had no idea about some of the flaws. I still see value in them, but thanks to you I'm better informed.
I was recently considering to eat 7-8 eggs and 20 gm's of Creatine to get in shape on daily basis but thank god i saw this video. Thank you Dr. Fung! Please share your view on Creatine intake too!
I feel gratitude for the clarity privided 🙏❤️. May I ask what gives you more satiety protein or fat?
Definitely need to do a podcast with Dr. Peter Attia
😮😮 this is gold I also follow 0.8 per kg and no protein powder.

Another great video, thank you! Dr Fung is a rarity, seldom do you have a very intelligent human that can present while using understandable real-life examples, and teach and maintain the audience's attention like he does!
He is great at explaining what goes on in the body
Thank you so much in explaining this information. Today, you are the best. This was extremely helpful.
Dr. Fung should be part of MAHA(Make America Healthy Again) team
doubt he wants to be part of a team ready to get rid of all immigrants legal or not
He is a Canadian not American
Why would an intelligent man like Dr. Fung get involved with the MAHA? He's not ignorant.
Lighten up people he is talking about health. 🙄
Trump and Musk should have him on America health board
Thank you so much Jason, this is of great importance to me to know that I am eating the right way for left ventricular heart improved function. Having had an aortic valve procedure earlier this year it is of concern to me

Thanks so much for this information! I have had to limit my protein intake to Apprx 25 g per meal and have been concerned that I wasn’t getting enough protein per day based on the input from other people in the fasting and carnivore space.
Thank you Dr. Jason. Very helpful information.
