  • Ah yes, to try a french seam. You should do it! They are easy and have great results. Dee made New Look 6868, which was a pattern her sister got for $2 online and gave it to her as a gift! She made it out of thrifted fabric she got for $2.69. She made view D which has pleases in the front and the back. She says this is an easy pattern to make, anyone can do it, and comes with six sizes all in one.
Dory chose to make Butterick 5278, view B, a 1997 Classic blouse pattern. She made it out of organic cotton that she got in a FabricMartFabrics fashion bundle. The fabric is a dream to work with and feels so good! This was also a fast and easy pattern.

I sewed French seams for the first time last week! I made an Easter dress for one of my granddaughters and I French seamed the armholes too! I was nervous the while time, but I got it done! Lovely makes as usual, ladies! ~Nancy

The reason you sometimes have to flip your pattern piece is because, it is also used the way you expect it to be in another cutting layout.
Sometimes you have to fold your fabric, so your salvage is meet in the center. This is usually if the fabric is very wide. Other times you have just one fold.
I hope I am making myself clear.
I look forward to seeing videos every week and enjoy them very much.❤

I love the finish of french seams. I actually did them quite often but I finally got a serger at 63 so now I’m serging more. Still prefer the french seam finish though. I sew a scant 1/4 seam then flip it and do 3/8. I do not understand doing a 3/8 seam first then trimming the seam…that was how I originally learned the french seam. I haven’t tried french seaming a sleeve yet. Fun video. Great makes.

I was afraid to try French seams but when I did, they were great - finished off the seams inside so incredibly nicely, added strength to seams and took care of problems with any fraying and they really weren't that hard to do! Your tops are lovely, as always!

Hi, good to watch you ladies again. This is the way I have always understood it. If you follow on the back of the envelop it says how much fabric to buy at each width of fabric for your size. Then the pattern layout shows you how to get all the pieces on that amount of fabric. That way you know the least amount of fabric you need to make your garment. But then again, maybe I misunderstood what you were getting at. Anyway, I always enjoy your videos.

Since my overlocker stopped working I have been French seaming the lighter weight fabrics and flat felling the heavier and the finishes are so nice. If the armholes are not gathered or they are raglan it is just as easy to do the armholes with French seams. The overall look is better in my opinion than overlocking. If you want a challenge try French seam pockets!! You’ll need a tutorial for that one 🤪

🤣 We might pass on the French seam pockets! We enjoy the look of the French seam too.

For the suggestion box: find and download a zero waste pattern. Dee n Dory make the same pattern. It has to explicitly say zero waste. Like the fabrics used this go round as well. Dees top is really cute but I didnt understand in the reveal putting the tie inside. Dory your top is see thru, really see thru so maybe a camisole under?? Great job everyone 😊
