I'm in the process of making a reversible quilted vest, having rediscovered my fabric stash after years. Some parts will be pieced and the whole thing will be quilted. After I finish the vest, I'm going to make a reversible quilted jacket, using a pattern from a book called "Jacket Jazz", which I bought years ago and used to make a reveersible jacket. I understand how making quilted jackets can.be addictive. Of the jackets you showed in the video, I really like the first one with the collar and your pieced side made from fabrics from your stash. I also like the Jackie O one. It looks very elegant on you.
I think I’ve watched this episode five times, maybe more, I love it that much. One of my sewing groups has had a “quilted jacket” challenge that’s been going on for quite some time. It’s not really a challenge so much as a group interest, but I was probably the most enthusiastic about it, and I haven’t even made mine yet! 😁 A little side amusement (for me, anyway) is that I didn’t immediately know what a “boot fair” was. We have them here in the U.S., but we call that part of the car the “trunk.” I laughed at myself when it finally clicked in my brain, because I’m well acquainted with the term, since I’ve owned two Mini Coopers. 😂😂 Please know that this is absolutely NOT a criticism or even a request to change anything about how you present content, or to in any way cater to “American English” for your U.S. viewers! I really love discovering the differences in language usage. I find it fun. And maybe useful for my current dream of moving away from here. At least for four years or so…😃💙
To prevent my quilted jacket from sticking out, I ran a line of thin, round elastic with a needle across the back above the waist and it brings it in just slightly. Made a big difference.
For the French seams, I will sew around the cut out piece at 4/8 (1/2") and then trim out the wadding (batting) to eliminate the bulk. Then sew wrong sides at 1/4", press open, turn to inside, press again and sew at 3/8". I've been making these since the 1980's! I loved the oriental fabric, but I like them longer, to my knees. Thanks for doing the work so we don't have to! ❤
I must say, I don’t know why you showed up in my feed, but this was the perfect video for me. I am 5’1, very short waisted from waist to shoulder with a very full bust line. I love jackets, but they are so difficult to purchase and I am looking forward to experimenting like you have just showed us. Thank you so much.🎉❤. (And I subscribed!)
I remember that vintage, purple, M&S fabric! They did it in pink as well. I had the pink in a duvet cover in 1974! I loved it but it is long gone. Well done for keeping that going for 50 years! I was thinking of making a quilted gilet but now I think it must be a jacket. Thanks for the inspiration.🌹
I had the vintage St Michael duvet cover in yellows. Golly, a piece of history! It was a wedding present, we've been married over 50 years. I also had a blue quilted jacket from C&A, years ago. Think I need to replace it. This is a really helpful video!
When my sweatshirts become anit fraxxled looking, I cut them apart, fit them like a pattern, place my fabric or quilted piece on each sweatshirt pattern, quilt each piece, then assemble the jacket. My preference is placing the fuzzy side to back side of fabric creating a more thermal effect & hiding the frazzled looking fuzzy side. My serger is used for arm and sleeve seams, but I like to make a neat bias for the side seams. If your sweatshirt has a logo on the front, I merely use the front fir the back of the jacket, fitting it properly. BTW, a person can never have too many quilted jackets! I love being able to use sweatshirts that still have a use, but upscale rhem instead of throwing them away. When stores have sales on them, I select some for future use. Keep experimenting and enjoy.
"Sticky outious" great term (not sure I spelled it correctly) but we all know what you mean. I love the jacket fashion show. So fun to see all the different ones. When you finish the seams edges separately I think it's called a Hong Kong finish. I used it when I made a linen jacket, and I used really light weight cotton, like batiste for my bias tape. You can also be fancy and use silk, which is also very light and doesn't add much bulk. It was great to see all the different finishes you used on the inside. Your leftover white quilted fabric would make a lovely vest (waist coat). Many years ago I made a quilted jacket with a mandarin collar. My mom told me to use slippery lining fabric to line the arms. It was wonderful, even if I was wearing a sweater underneath I could easily get my arms in and out of the jacket. Thank you so much for sharing all your beautiful jackets. They are all so pretty and colorful.
great job! They all are fun! I really like the long Ilford jacket. For the white one you are not sold on, I immediately saw it as a baseball jacket type! Switch it to a soft knit cuff and collar, many times you can get these as a set. Make it a contrasting color for a pop of color and I would reduce the fabric in the front and put in a zipper. It could also be colored. Stay all cream if you want it to look classy but I think it would be fun that way! Thanks, I've had my thrift shop quilts waiting and just never chose a pattern because I didn't know. Your fashion show really helped me!
I think this is doing exactly what it was supposed to do! I think the Sewing Bee jacket is exactly what I've been occasionally pondering as a quilted jacket possibility. 😊
@@sequingirlie I don't know when I'll get around to it; but seeing this really convinced me to do it. Part of my problem with many jackets is that I have atopic ecsema and need to avoid artificial fibre fabrics as much as possible - I have long toyed with the thought (supported by a very lucky RTW find years ago, now long gone) that quilted cotton must be the way to go. And I LOVE the idea of using a warm fabric rather than batting - the fact you successfully used a knit fabric actually supports another idea I was toying with, that of using up my huge stash of wool and mostly-wool yarn in this application. 😅 (It's the same artificial fibre problem - it's less of a problem when it doesn't touch skin but my body still doesn't like its lack of breathability.) The dart in that particular pattern also fills me with more confidence because I usually need a full bust adjustment; so the fact it's there and knowing it's not a problem in the thicker material is such a help and nudge towards actually doing it. And I also like that it's longer in the back - I never gave it much thought before but that's exactly the thing with shorter garments - they look better on me (I have short legs and wide hips, many usual jacket lengths hit me exactly where it makes me look most frumpy), but they can get a bit drafty! So thanks for the overview, it's really informative and inspirational. I have a little suggestion about the video - could you maybe break this up into chapters? Is that something you can do on UA-cam after the fact? I think it would make it even more useful for people pondering different patterns!
Wow back in the 1980s i made a few Quilted coats....knitted sleeves and the hem and neck on some... Taught classes twice...Loved them...Yours are very nice Brought back great memories
That was a great vlog…. I only recently bought a piece of quilted fabric, thinking I could make a jacket…it will need to be lined…but seeing all yours, I now know I have many options…and we are exactly the same size….thanks again, I only just found your post…!! 😊🇦🇺
Thank you so much for this video. I love quilted jackets as much as you do and we are almost the same size so I was able to see (kind of) how I would look. I like the Hovea jacket the most out of all of them, but I would only make the longer length. I am mostly familiar with the Tamarak jacket. Here in the US people have raved about it! I have looked at it several times without being able to see why I did not like it so much. Since I heard your comments about the fit, I realized what it was. A lot of their designs are marketed toward younger women like yourself. Here in the US, it is stylish for youngish women to wear winter jackets that are very close fitting. It is also common here to put lining or quilting in the bodice without putting any in the sleeves, which in your case would have made a difference. If you make it again, maybe you could try a larger size for armhole and sleeves?
I applaud you for making eight quilted jackets!! I have just made my first quilted jacket. After watching your video you have inspired me to make another one Thank you for your video I am from South Africa😊
I don't know why this showed up, but I am glad it did. I want to make a quilted jacket, but haven't yet. Definitely learned some hints I want to try. Sweatshirt material for the inside sounds great.
Watching this at 1 am. Sometimes sewing videos help me relax so i can sleep. Of course they give me ideas too! I think I would like to try and make one of these once I get more experienced using my new sewing machine. I guess they would be good for chilly summer days or slightly cool autumn weather? Maybe use wool in them too for some extra warmth. Cotton looks great but it has 0 warmth. I have no idea where you live but it gets cold here in winter. We are having an unusually warm autumn at the moment - technically its already Oct 1st as its past midnight and its supposed to hit 70 F again - but I am sure that weather wont last much longer. Normal temps for Sept and Oct is more along the lines of 40 F or 50 F as the high. And then once Nov and Dec comes you can expect freezing temps with possible snow on the ground. A few years ago we were hit with a snowstorm just before Halloween. Had several inches of snow on the ground. Like ankle deep snow. And it was so weird to see Halloween decorations up on houses in the snow. So at what outside temperature are these good for? I am also petite and I do get cold very easily. Hence my idea about using wool. I like the pattern - shape of the last one best. But I do think they need some buttons or something. And if its hot enough to wear a tank top under it... That sort of suggests temps in the 70s? Maybe a tad chilly due to wind? Iove temps in the 80s + 90s F the best. Lovely jackets!
Thank you for sharing your quilt jacket journey. I love them all. Also, I feel inspired to try to make one too. Something new to search for at a charity shop. I enjoyed your video.
Hi Sam. Wow -- you are going to be an oasis of color and lovely design when the cool weather settles in. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful quilted jackets. My favorite has to be the Japanese pink and blue one, but what a difficult choice -- they are all fantastic. I've been working on the Moss Jacket by Helen's Closet. As usual, I'm ending up changing every pattern piece to make it fit or to be the way I want it. I made the pockets like the Hovea, changed the kimono-style sleeves to be semi-set-in sleeves, added a back yoke of knit fabric, tweaked the collar quite a bit, and made a sample up out of a flannel print. I'm almost ready to sew it up in a Japanese dobby cotton fabric once I get all the changes back onto the paper pattern. Then who knows... a quilted version maybe. I love your vlog and as always feel so inspired after watching you with your amazing combo of creativity and energy to the max, Antonia
Hi! I have a Janome Memory craft machine also. Mine is older! Lol Wow… 8 quilted jackets. I really liked the gray and white one and the longest one. Great video!
Wow! That was a great comparison. I do love the shape of the GBSB jacket. Hangs beautifully. I have the Tamarack and have not made it but I do have big atms so that information is very useful.
You did a great job on all the jackets. I’m so pleased you showed so many jackets, detailing the pros and cons. I want to make a quilted jacket but haven’t decided on which pattern to choose.
Maybe you can add a buttonhole and a decorative button to the last one with the odd front? Great job on all of the jackets! Even though I am in Dallas, Texas and the weather only gets chilly for a short time here, I am inspired to make one. 😃 Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and sewing tips!
@@sequingirlie I really like the black one, (coral color inside) where about 40mins, you're saying you don't like the way the front comes together. I think it's chic & stylish! The way it easily laid together to overlap at the neckline had me thinking that that spot would be a prime place to add a decorative button or closure!! My next fav was the 2nd one you put on! ...the one where you showed you could roll up the cuff or leave it down! Love the way it fit on you!
Thank you for the quilted makes. They look lovely, so will review this video again and decide which one to make. Surprised at the GBSB pattern. Very elegant and well drafted. I’d have to lengthen it. Appreciate you sharing your measurements. I found that very helpful.
WOW! Can you really have too many jackets/coats? ! I'm not even sure which was is my favourite. They each are unique and have interesting details and fit. I do love the pockets on the rainbow coat, big deep pockets are so useful and stylish. I made my quilted jacket using a vintage Simplicity pattern and a thrifted quilt. Because of the size of the print, it took some careful cutting. After watching Rachel from French Seams, i bought the Tamaric jacket pattern, and it was on sale. I'm glad you told us the sleeves fit narrow. Right after i bought that pattern i found a beautiful quilted blanket at a thrift store. I also have TGBSB quilted jacket pattern. I'm planning on lengthening it, I like my bum to be covered. And I'm going to make it a patchwork using fat quarters. I was going to make it a true quilted coat with quilt batting and a contrast lining, but when you used sweatshirt fleece , well that is brilliant!! Oh, the long quilted jacket! Do I need one? NO! Do I want one? YES! Thanks for all the research and the tips. I am putting this video on my saves so i can refer to it when making my next jacket.
Thanks for this- so informative - have been thinking about doing one of these for ages, now I’m a bit more motivated! I have an Hovea pattern so I think that will be my first attempt!!Thanks for going to all the trouble!!!!
I have a wardrobe of mainly vests and a few jackets. Eight is not too many. They are a great place to try a new technique. They are so fun to wear and give me just a little warmth. Thanks for the review of the techniques.
Thank you for all the tips - especially loved the idea of using twill tape instead of binding & the tip to use sweatshirt fabric for lining the arms rather than batting/wadding. I have big arms & this has kept me from making myself a quilted jacket - now I know what to do! Thanks so much. ❤
Thank you so much for this. I am tackling this type of project for a Christmas gift. I never thought of quilting onto the sweatshirt and just bought a flannel lining, but now I’m seriously debating that.
Ok Sam, you take the 'crazy sewing lady' 1st place prize! You crushed all of them. Normally, I am not really a fan of anything quilted. But you have made so many versions, with different fabrics and combinations, that I am, mayyyyybe reassessing my need to try one for myself. Yup, I stuck the video out to the end and I am so impressed with your honest comments about the patterns and their features. Entertaining too, to watch while I sew. LOL, for the Tamarak, you have to give it the American English A., not the more pleasant sounding British A. 🤣
Thank you so much for this!! I’m off to explore your other videos. I have a hard time fitting my size. I’m 44, 37, 42 and petite framed. So I’m having a time finding a pattern that I can work out to fit, without being either hugely bulky, or full of darts.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think I would choose the sewing bee one. I'm not sure what the size range is. I also did a video about my 9th quilted jacket!!! Used a brushed cotton sheet for the padding and it was really nice without being bulky. Xx
This is a great quilted jacket video! You have encouraged me greatly! I have alwayso Loved quilted jackets of this sort and I'm very excited to begin creating a couple!
Loved that you made so many different patterns. I made a Linda MacPhee jacket . She used to have a tv show in Canada and is so fun . The Hovea is next on my list . A zipper on the front is a nice option. Thanks for all the tips .
I have two Sam...the Hovea and the Molly from Fibre Mood, and of course the Ilford - which I haven't quilted to date. Love your Ilford and think I will give that a go. Thanks for your vlog you are so creative.X
I like the 2nd one you wore for style, but I liked the Japanese fabric of all the fabrics you used. I want to make a Japanese hanten so the style of the 2nd one might work.
I really like your first jacket and the Ilford one too. Someone on Minerva made a quilted jacket from a company called Minikrea no. 70575 and I really liked the look of that too. It has a lovely collar and what looks like princess seams on the back to give it some shaping.
Because Chanel style jackets were made with heavy fabrics, they usually had a chain sewn to the inside back along the lower hem to keep the back from sticking out or lifting up. The links were perhaps a centimeter or so. The chain was removed for laundering, which was done infrequently, given the hand woven fabrics. I’ve been able to see several Chanel and Davidow jackets in person, and it is worth looking at their finishing details.
I want to quilt the jacket. The one that looks like puzzle pieces. And it's long sleeves. Collar. Two large pockets. And the colors need to be bright. On white background. And bright binding too
Love this. Thanks for your dedication 😂 great to see how all the different patterns fitted. I’ve bought the wildwood by Helen’s closet and have intentions of making a chambray patchwork one. ❤
Wow, well done, I have just made my niece a quilted hoodie following a pattern by wellspring designs, and l love it and don’t want to give it away. It took forever as I bespoke made patchwork for each of the pieces before cutting out and machine quilting. I have the tamarac pattern ready to make a jacket for myself. Your tips are so helpful.
Great video. I've made a quilted parchment and found the sizing to be on the larger side. I didn't add the facing on the front, and it still overlapped, so I added poppers. I'd like to try the Ready to Sew, Julien chore jacket.
Omg your jackets are all amazing. I was talking to some friends yesterday about your impending vlog, I then had a lightbulb moment, I have so many quilt tops made but not quilted, these need to be made into jackets and possibly tops and dresses as well as jackets. I love the last one, but the Ilford and Hovea are my favourite
Amazing! All so different and so versatile. I have purchased the Coda jacket and hope to turn it into a quilted jacket. Alderwood Studios is currently doing a sew along for the Coda (Love Notions) and has a FB page and IG for it. This is the 2nd sew along. I', hoping she'll repeat the SAL next year and I can get around to cutting the 50 pairs of jeans I've collected into squares. The sweatshirt is marvelous. My first quilted jacket is made over a sweatshirt and I lined it with a lightweight cupro. Great video. Watched the whole thing. Thanks-Claudia
You never cease to amaze me how much you sew, I am envious. I loved watching this video & it was full of great information! I especially love your first jacket with your self drafted collar, the sewing bee & lilford, nothing wrong with the others though either . I have so many scraps you have motivated me to use them in a jacket.

Thank you for your video. I've made one that I like so well that I seldom wear it! No opportunities in my old age, but I now want to make another one.
Ooh yes go for it xx
Girlie!!!!! I’m from Oklahoma and you have a new follower and subscriber!!!! And I’m saving your video under quilted jackets.
Oh wow thank you. I really hope you enjoy my channel xx
Wish I’d watched this before making my quilted jacket! So helpful. Going to try another one now….
Ooh thank you that is such a lovely comment. I hope it goes well x
The Ilford was my favourite. Great vlog that was very informative thank you.
Thank you so much xx
Hi! I have a Janome Memory craft machine also. Mine is older! Lol
Wow… 8 quilted jackets. I really liked the gray and white one and the longest one. Great video!
Wow! That was a great comparison. I do love the shape of the GBSB jacket. Hangs beautifully. I have the Tamarack and have not made it but I do have big atms so that information is very useful.
Highly recommend you size up on the arms. Thank you for your lovely comment x
You did a great job on all the jackets. I’m so pleased you showed so many jackets, detailing the pros and cons. I want to make a quilted jacket but haven’t decided on which pattern to choose.
Thank you for your lovely comment. I hope you enjoy making your jacket xxx
I like your quilted jackets but I love your personality.
Thank you that is very kind. I hope you enjoy some of my other videos. Xx
Love these jackets…you are amazing..love watching your vlogs thank you sho much Sam ❤😊
Love them. I'm very petite so I need one that won't be too big or stick out. Great colors!
Hi me too. I'm 5ft 2 with narrow shoulders so hopefully you can see how they fit. Xx
I love that you made eight jackets. What a whirlwind you are!
Ooh thank you xx
@@sequingirlie I really like the black one, (coral color inside) where about 40mins, you're saying you don't like the way the front comes together. I think it's chic & stylish! The way it easily laid together to overlap at the neckline had me thinking that that spot would be a prime place to add a decorative button or closure!! My next fav was the 2nd one you put on! ...the one where you showed you could roll up the cuff or leave it down! Love the way it fit on you!
OMG.- so much amazing information and exactly what I needed! Thank you for this! Next, a quilted vest/gilet....🤣 xx
I'm so glad you found it helpful. There is going to be an update coming soon
@@sequingirlie YAY! I'm excited!!!! xx
Loved this!! And thanks for the shout out! Amazing selection and so varied but each absolutely gorgeous ❤❤
Thank you so much xxx
Thank you for the quilted makes. They look lovely, so will review this video again and decide which one to make. Surprised at the GBSB pattern. Very elegant and well drafted. I’d have to lengthen it. Appreciate you sharing your measurements. I found that very helpful.
Thank you so much. I'm glad it was helpful. I really enjoyed putting it together xx
This is amazing. I have the Hovea pattern and you have inspired me.
Ooh I'm so pleased to hear that xx
Thank you. This is amazing. So many ideas and solutions and styles!
Im so glad it was helpful x
Thanks for this- so informative - have been thinking about doing one of these for ages, now I’m a bit more motivated! I have an Hovea pattern so I think that will be my first attempt!!Thanks for going to all the trouble!!!!
You are very welcome. I hope it goes well x
I have a wardrobe of mainly vests and a few jackets. Eight is not too many. They are a great place to try a new technique. They are so fun to wear and give me just a little warmth. Thanks for the review of the techniques.
Thank you so much. I'm now making some more lol
Your jackets are amazing Sam!! So beautiful and colourful, thanks for sharing ❤
I adore the fit of the Jackie O!
Thank you for all the tips - especially loved the idea of using twill tape instead of binding & the tip to use sweatshirt fabric for lining the arms rather than batting/wadding. I have big arms & this has kept me from making myself a quilted jacket - now I know what to do! Thanks so much. ❤
I have all the patches ready and been looking for ages to find the right one to make.
Thank you for giving me ideas and choices.
Oooh I'm so glad X
Thank you so much for this. I am tackling this type of project for a Christmas gift. I never thought of quilting onto the sweatshirt and just bought a flannel lining, but now I’m seriously debating that.
I love that first one…I want one too! Lovely
Thank you xx
I have alwayso
Loved quilted jackets of this sort and I'm very excited to begin creating a couple!
Ooh I'm so pleased xx
Love the collar
Thank you x
LOVE the colors on the #2 jacket!
Thank you
Absolutely loved this video. So happy I stumbled on your channel ❤
Oh yay thank you so much xx
Loved that you made so many different patterns. I made a Linda MacPhee jacket . She used to have a tv show in Canada and is so fun . The Hovea is next on my list . A zipper on the front is a nice option. Thanks for all the tips .
Wow, thank you for taking so much time and effort, fabulous information and inspiration, thank you again❤️
I just found the slacks I referred to above! You did make them…. I must try them.. I’m so glad I found you. You are an inspiration….
I do like the idea of using sweatshirt material for wadding. Cozy…
Thank you xx
Wonderful. Loved watching you describe making your jackets. Makes me want to make some.
I have two Sam...the Hovea and the Molly from Fibre Mood, and of course the Ilford - which I haven't quilted to date. Love your Ilford and think I will give that a go. Thanks for your vlog you are so creative.X
Thank you so much. I can't believe I am building a bigger list of ones to try xxx
I remember seeing about that on the sewing bee.
The grey one looks gorgeous on you.
Thank you. It really surprised me as I don't often wear grey.
I’ve been thinking about making a quilted jacket for a long time! Thank you! You gave me helpful info.
Ooh I'm so glad.
I want to try the Ilford jacket. Thank you for the excellent review.
What a fantastic vlog, thank you. I have made the Ilford in cord fabric but am now inspired to give a quilted one a go.
Loved this and the jackets, thank you!
Thank you so much
Love the jackets. Truly Inspiring. I've made a long but prefer the hip length
So impressed❤️🏴🇨🇦
Thank you
Thank you very much I love the second one have redone the bedroom in new colors and this will be great for my beddibg to still be useful
Really enjoyed your presentation - first time viewing your vlogs - will be back for more!!
Thank you Angela. Wow a quilted capsule wardrobe x
Thanks-Claudia
lots of good hack ideas.
Thank you
Wow! Great video. Thanks you
You are very welcome x
I just made a quilted jacket with the sugaro top pattern which I’m really happy with
You could also flatfell some of the inner seams. You cut some of the seam down, and leave the outer piece longer to wrap and handsew over it all
Thank you for the tip
Thanks for all the info! 💜
You are very welcome xx
You never cease to amaze me how much you sew, I am envious. I loved watching this video & it was full of great information! I especially love your first jacket with your self drafted collar, the sewing bee & lilford, nothing wrong with the others though either . I have so many scraps you have motivated me to use them in a jacket.
