What did you think about the crossbows? Would you like to see them return or never use them again? I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!!!
Messed around with an off-the-shelf crossbow years ago, missed my target, arrow sailed right through a very thick tree behind the backstop... "crossbows are no joke" is an understatement.
My sister shot her thumb off with a crossbow not long ago. Yeah, they are no joke. She was shooting at a deer. I have no idea how her thumb got in the line of fire. It’s gone though. Couldn’t reattach it.
@@fivebooks8498 when the string is in motion, imagine a guillotine from about trigger to muzzle. that cable has to push an arrow ~400 feet per second. So it would be a very sturdy cable, as well as a very fast moving one in order to propell a bolt. When shouldering a crossbow, your offhand that you use to brace the end of the weapon, if you are clumsy enough with your hand placement, your thumb doesn't have to be in the broadhead's path or in front of the bow at all, just anywhere in that gap from bowlimb to scope is a Finger-Be-Goner THATS WHY WE HAVE VERTICAL GRIPS, PEOPLE
One of the biggest things I notice people getting caught up in with modern archery equipment, is focusing entirely on speed. As a traditional archer and someone who prefers a recurve crossbow due to their ruggedness and reliability over compound equipment, I would recommend doing another video using much heavier arrows/bolts. A FMJ shaft(carbon fiber with an aluminum wrap) and a heavy point(200-400 grains as compared to 85-150 grains typically) can achieve an amazingly impressive amount of penetration and damage while also increasing the durability and stress able to be taken by the arrow/bolt itself. Speed is the messenger, momentum is the message. A 700 grain arrow moving at 200-250 FPS can do a lot compared to a 400 grain arrow traveling at 300-400 FPS, as speed is quickly lost through contact, but momentum allows it to continue its travel through resistance by weight. Awesome video Scott, as usual! 👍🏹
If true, this is interesting to me because velocity favors mass when it comes to kinetic energy. Eg. Energy = Mass x Velocity² (squared being the key). A 400 grain arrow flying at 400 fps has less energy than a 700 grain arrow moving at 250. But that's just at the "muzzle" of course and I don't know how an arrow behaves at distance. I don't know the velocity/distance curve but from what I'm reading from you I'm guessing the speed just drops dramatically faster with a lighter arrow, which does make sense. I would like to see a light arrow moving fast vs a heavy arrow moving slow from 10 feet though. I bet that would yield different results regarding energy and penetration but of course I'm sure not many people are shooting a deer from 10 feet away lol (although I'd like to see that).
and that's why Rail guns are so powerful... throwing a projectile that fast imparts a lot of momentum as well as kinetic energy... Though you'd probably notice arrows and crossbow bolts are larger than most bullets. Personally I'd like a full auto crossbow. there was one in this game called the attica from the game warframe was my favorite gun... silent and deadly.
The amazing thing about high speed crossbows, is that you can throw heavier bolts. I can shoot a bolt 50gr heavier than what you shoot, with a 150gr tip, and get 50fps more than you do from my high speed crossbow with a pretty flat trajectory.
@@getmeoutofsanfrancisco9917 in bullet ballistics heavier bullets drop much faster than lighter bullets. The .458 Socom 600 grain bullet drop 100 feet at 200 yards for instance It’s like hand artillery lol
Thats because speed does matter. I am an avid bow hunter and when I was younger I started with kind of a shitty beginner compound bow that didnt shoot very fast and even at 20 yards alert animals will jump the string and cause bad shots even if your aiming point was perfect. Once I got a nice mathews that will shoot 350 fps with a 450 gr arrow I have not had an animal jump and nearly all pass throughs even shooting 2inch cut 3 blade grim reapers. You need a balance of speed and weight and the right set up for the game. If your hunting bigger stuff like elk or moose you will want a heavier arrow.
A lot of people don't seem to know just how brutal a crossbow is, but just looking at the wound channels and the way it get's stuck in there is something else, huge power.
Fired my crossbow for the first time today into a standard archery target. Field tips. The depth of penetration and the pure difficulty of pulling that bolt out made me realise that I just fired off a weapon _easily_ as deadly as a firearm in my back yard. Think I’m not gonna shoot in the back yard anymore. I own every shot I take and I’m not gonna risk that anymore.
As a hunter who exclusively uses a crossbow for deer and elk, they are no joke. Clean pass throughs on even the thickest elk. 2 inch long cuts, double lung and heart pass through in just one shot. Crossbows are absolute monsters and need to be respected as such.
@@mr.malware8299its less abusive than eating a factory cow that elk lived a good life, and then he died a pack of wolves, a bear, or a hunter, t'is all the same
I loved it! I would love to see other weapons used as well! Long bow, Recurve bow, knives, swords, clubs! Kind of a "How would people survive the zombie apocalypse throughout the centuries!"
As someone who lives in a country where firearms are mostly illegal but crossbows and bow & arrow are still freely available weapons, I'm definitely up for more of that content.
_Very_ lethal. There's a reason that they kept on using crossbows in warfare for a couple hundred years after guns arrived on the scene. Guns overtook them eventually, but they are definitely no joke.
They are still used today in a very niche role because they are so much quieter than a firearm, even a "silenced" firearm will never be as quiet as a crossbow and a crossbow will make absolute sure that whatever you shot isn't having a great day afterwards
Crossbows kind of revolutionized war for the brief period where they were relevant. Suddenly you didn't need to be obscenely strong to send an arrow/bolt through armor. You can send a crossbow bolt through pretty much anything.
To add context, some crossbows could reach up to 1000lb in strength, they were so powerful you need ear protection to use them and these could go through a majority of armour of its day (but not all armour as good quality plate steel would still stop it, but you’d need to be rich in-order to buy that so for your average citizen, yeah you’re gone.)
@@PRESIDENT_LEMON My apologies (especially if this comes across as an "aktuallee" type comment), but this is incorrect. Even the 1000lb crossbows could not "go through most armor" like, for example, early gonnes could. Because of inefficient energy transfer in their design, the actual power of the bolts shot by medieval crossbows was substantially less than their draw weight. a 1000lb crossbow was no more or less powerful than a 150 pound longbow. While particularly thin and/or shoddily made armor was in danger (such as the arm and leg protection of average quality plate armor at the time of Agincourt), well made and thick armor is more or less invulnerable to arrows and bolts. Such armor was also not only for the super-wealthy. There have even been tests were a warbow was stopped by gambeson and chainmail. Brigandine armor was not only more protective, it was also fairly common; it has been referred to as "poor mans plate" after all. Modern designs are much more efficient in their energy transfer, hence their equivelent and/or greater effectiveness at a lower draw weight. The real revolution that crossbows brought was the fact that you could take a peasant off the fields, give them a week of off-and-on training and they would be just as effective as a longbow man. By stark contrast, training to use a heavy draw longbow takes years at least. For reference of armor against arrows and bolts, I recommend the channel of Tods Workshop. Also, Skallagrim has done a good video on the subject.
You do realize that crossbows were used as late as the early eighteen hundreds right? Due to the slow fire rate of rifles and the accuracy problems prior to the invention of rifled barrels many professional marksman used crossbows. Infact many rich had several crossbow men as body guards because of there power and skill.
@@zebjensen4251 "You do realize that crossbows were used as late as the early eighteen hundreds right?" In hunting, yes. In warfare, absolutely not. At least, not in western warfare. Rifled barrels were invented in the early 1500s, and even smoothbore long guns are more accurate at a greater distance than most crossbows until the mid to late 19th century. Also, the time to reload even a rifled gun is greatly exaggerated. A trained soldier was expected to shoot three to four shots a minute, which is faster than nearly any heavy draw-weight crossbow. "many professional marksman used crossbows" is a statement that I had found little to no evidence to confirm or deny, right alongside "Infact many rich had several crossbow men as body guards because of there power and skill" While I am sure that such has indeed happened, I highly doubt it was as prolific as you suggest. If you could provide sources that I may have missed, that would be helpful.
Arrows are far more lethal than people that don’t bowhunt think. I even saw a video online with arrows vs body armour and even the field tips penetrated. Would love to see the effects of a compound bow on a ballistic dummy as well, just to see the penetration effectiveness compared to a crossbow. Thanks for the video!
after seeing so many bullets get stuck in these ballistic gel targets.. it's quite impressive and terrifying that crossbows can do so much.. sometimes old doesn't mean useless huh
It's a bit complicated so I'll just say it's like the difference between hitting water at 500 mph in a belly flop and pencil diving off a small bridge. The penetration is more in the case of the diver even though the speed was much higher in the case of the 500mph guy. Don't know if that explains it well but hope it helps
Hi AndrewConlan have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe. I got it in my about tab.
it is lol because the arrows could cause a lot of other injuries then just stabbing and bleeding. not gonna say them all because i would be typing this forever, but some other injuries could include: Internal Bleeding, Concussions, (depends if arrow/bolt is rusty or not) Tetnis or Lockjaw, etc.
To be fair, it is kind of like the closest thing you can get to a rail gun. Let me explain, a rail gun is a gun that uses kinetic energy and magnets to fire a projectile. A crossbow uses potential energy to fire an arrow rather then a metal object being fired by a bunch of magnets. In summary, a rail gun uses kinetic energy to fire a projectile and a crossbow uses potential energy to fire an arrow
@@Delta_do_a_spin Both convert potential energy(the charge/ voltage aka potential difference that energizes the magnets and the spring energy of the bowstring). Something has to have mass and velocity to have kinetic energy. A regular firearm does too... undetonated gunpowder has potential energy that is released upon detonation. All three lose a fraction of the total energy due to but not limited to losses in the resistance/inductance of the circuit, friction losses in the bow and gas pressure leakage from the firearm. All three lose heat energy.
Note that there exist repeating crossbows, that can shoot arrow after arrow (or bolt after bolt) with a simple lever cocking mechanism (some smaller ones have a simple pull back mechanism for cocking), not too much slower than a lever action rifle or a pump action shotgun. They usually hold 5-7 arrows /bolts, tho Joerg Sprave did make a repeating crossbow which holds 18 bolts, because of course he did. The lower capacity ones are far from toys, even one hunting bolt (ie razor sharp broadhead) can easily be lethal, let alone 6 of them; plus there are speedloaders for such repeating crossbows, which function something like clip magazines for rifles. To see Sprave's 18 bolt crossbow look up the video called "Pure Crossbow Firepower - High Cap Bolt Mag!" here on UA-cam.
@@RobertCrees Cobra Adder, Sprave's product, which is lever cocking, has 90, 110 or 130lb limbs for it, whereas the Steambow Stinger Compact that is pull cocking I think regularly is with 35 or 55lb limbs, but you could put stronger limb if you can draw more. IDK the fps..
I've been an archery hunter 40+ years and have seen the advancements in technology. I have seen the damage that a broadhead can do to a deer, especially if it doesn't go all the way through, as the animal moves through the woods. .Awesome video, I'd rather be shot with a bullet a dozen times, than be stuck once with an arrow.
@@gustavocampos9404 Well, sort of; I'm not saying where th bullet strike would occur. Also, not all at once, though I prefer not getting shot at all. What I'm saying is that once a bullet is in flesh, yes there's damage, but one can move about without inflicting further damage, provided no vitals were compromised. With the blades of a broadhead, once they have entered th body any movement will cause further internal damage. I know people who have received gunshot wounds, some say it all depends on circumstances and of course shot placement, but some have said that they didn't feel hardly anything, while others were instantly incapacitated even with a minor wound. I would attribute this to shock or adrenaline. To be honest though, I'll settle for not getting shot at all!!!
Great video Scott. You have my vote for more crossbow content. A comparison video showing what a crossbow can do for a stealthy shot versus suppressed rifles and pistols could make a great series.
I liked the crossbows A LOT. I think they were very unique and interesting to see on a gun channel and see how they hold up against the zombie torso. Keep up the good work!

In Washington state they set up targets that you can only see 3 inches of it and the shot is graded how close to the 10 point area you are. Lots of fun. In vermont they have similar shoots but the targets are protected by steel frames you miss you lost a bolt lol. Haven't done any in sc yet hope to soon.
This is timebarred by now and happen in Sweden 35 years ago when i was a teen, but my brother had a Rambo-bow and we were curious how far the arrow could go. So we shot it on the big the big field we had that was several hundred yards of open space, we never found the arrow. But a few days later we heard that a woman had called the police that she had found her kitchen window broken and her refrigerator broken with an arrow that had gone through it. We never played with that thing again at home, only at our countryhouse after that incident.
That is crazy!!! It just goes to show that when shooti g a crossbow or gun always make sure you have an intended target. Only aim at what you intend to hit. I am so glad that woman wasn't hit by it by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks for sharing that story, that is crazy!!!
Were you lobbing them up into the air? Because that is all kinds of stupid. The range on crossbows is not that far, to where it's gonna hit something that's too far away for you to see, unless, I guess there are trees or something blocking your view.....scary nonetheless
It's crazy how many fps some of the new crossbows are capable of shooting and how far/accurate they are while still remaining silent and deadly. Plus they look awesome and are fun to shoot.
@@draxxsklounst6595 yeah barnett makes a good crossbow, any newer crossbow compound or recurve style limbs all shoot really well , fast & accurate. Once you hit that 300+ fps threshold it's all the same for the most part only time it'd really matter is if you're hunting in Africa lol.

Some of the high powered air rifles that you can legally hunt with are really cool but they're also super expensive and not practical for everyone. For a few hundred bucks you can get a really nice set up compound or recurve limb crossbow and be accurate shooting it fairly quickly. Plus they just look cool lol
Note to self, reversing through a zombie is only viable if you still have a tailgate. I'm trying to decide if Scott considered the torso may end up breaking that window.. or if that was a complete shock to him in the moment. I'd like to think he had enough worldly experience to guess that would happen, but then again I could see him just getting caught up in the moment and his dad definitely would NOT bring it up because he knew it would be hilarious
sounded like he was choking on the dust from the safety glass breaking. he probably wouldn't have breathed it in if he was expecting it, although maybe he didn't realize how violently it would break lol
Being new to crossbow myself, the opening slays me to no end!! Though I'm proud to say I actually did my homework so I didn't have any "it'll buff out" moments. 😅😅😅
Im a bow hunter so im glad to see arrows get some time to shine. As you saw, those broadheads make for some significant wound channels. I also am glad to see my decision to avoid mechanical broadheads was a good one. Honestly, I stick with ones like the muzzy, they can take a beating. I once hit a tree with one. The arrow was a loss, but I got the broadhead out intact.
Crossbow also has 2 pretty serious advantages for when the Z-boys show up; 1st, it's pretty damn quiet, so you aren't really broadcasting your exact location when you shoot. 2nd, reusable ammo is convenient AF, realistically you can probably reclaim the majority of bolts once fired, and do so repeatedly as well.
What's nice is if your fletching starts falling apart you just need to pick up a few feathers off the ground and as long as you know how to re-fletch an arrow, you're golden
@@AmaraTheGreat-18 Oh for sure, goes without saying. But just as it was when they were first introduced, the learning curve for a crossbow is much much lower, and a relative amateur can deliver consistent power against a target with very little basic instruction and a bit of practice. I'd personally far prefer a bow as well, but for the sake of convenience a crossbow is still quite good.
I saw some video of a guy demonstrating ancient bows with draw weights as high as 150+ lbs. The impact on target was impressive. Throwing relatively heavy arrows with stone broad heads the target was physically moving something fierce. Scary stuff when you consider that was the standard of warfare for over 2000 years.
Many of those nearly 200 pounds bows were the English long bows. With modern technology with these types of cross bows you can easily replicate the same results with much less weights. My uncle at one time crafted long bows as a hobby and they outperformed leading brands like Black Widow Bows. At about 50-60 pounds, arrows traveled about 155-165 fps. with a 28" draw length. Compound bows at the same weight and draw easily reach 300fps. Alot of the impact and penetration lies with grain, arrow stiffness, and placement of the shot.
Against soft targets, arrows can have the penetrating power of a 20mm. Like, they have been used as anti-sandbag rounds because they just glide through them better than a .50 cal.
The fact that this was the first video I have ever watched from this channel is crazy nostalgia for me. Ever since I have watched so many more of your videos
Oh my god, sometimes Scott just leaves me in hysterics. Never afraid to let his inner young teenager out to have fun either. Hey Scott, I absolutely love crossbows, and archery of any kind for that matter. If you ever do another crossbow video, I strongly recommend you try out a repeating crossbow from gogun. They are hands down the most fun I have ever had shooting a crossbow, and I think you would really like them!
Scott, you should try out the various rapid-fir crossbows featured by Jorg on his UA-cam channel, The Slingshot Channel. Reloading a magazine equipped crossbow has never been easier!
Jorg also has a bow with would be held with both hands and a trigger, so the shooter has a much better grip and is able to direct the arrow much easier which really increases its accuracy

The reason the small game arrow was so lethal is because you were using a crossbow. A typical compound bow has about a 75 - 90 pound draw weight while a crossbow has over 100 pound. Anyone hunting small game would use a traditionalized bow with maybe 45 pounds or draw weight which make it lethal but not explosive for maybe a small hare. The harder it is to pull back, typically the harder the arrow hits.
You can hunt rabbits and other small game with a crossbow using judo points. For some small game you even need a Broadhead. Turkey, goose, wolf for instance.
Scott, huge thanks to you from the stick slinging community! This is an amazing episode, so educational and so much fun! Its a shame though you didnt have one of them Ranch Fairy style good old 650+ grain rod with a 200+ grain single bevel fixed head! Now that would've been a perfect match for the broadside shoulder shot!
Thank you Scott for posting this video on crossbows. I suppose that if gunpowder hadn't been invented crossbows would still be around as a primary weapon. If I'm not mistaken the OSS or British Intelligence in WWII made limited use of tgem. I took an archery class at Long Beach City College in the 1974 when I lived down there in Long Beach, California. One day there were a couple of students in the class that brought a crank up crossbow that was made out of laminated automobile leaf springs. It was powerful and would shoot a bolt through cinderblocks; I forget how many. It should be noted that the Middle Ages crossbows fired bolts that had large forged iron points that were designed to penetrate armor. One of these bolts would have gone through the truck body.
I know what you mean. My brother made a crossbow in woodshop out of leaf spring at Ventura High about 1972. Amazing the power it had. Love the Long Beach and Huntington Beach area 👍
I don't have anything to cite, but I think you're right about the OSS/SAS crossbow use in WW2. For medium range work they're quieter than even a suppressed rifle of that time. (today's suppressors might make that a false statement).
About 1980 a man my dad knew made a crossbow using an automotive leaf spring that shot ball bearings. It shot a bearing all the way through a 1975 Pontiac grand prix, in the driver door and out the passenger side, and it was my car!
Well, when you remember the fact that crossbows were originally made to counter the PLATE armour of medieval knights, it makes sense why they have a LOT of power. Edit: For the love of God people, read the first two replies!
...they werent, and crossbows dont go through plate armor, neither historical nor modern. They were made because you can get the power of a strong warbow without needing to have your soldiers train for years to be able to handle those draw weights.
@@al7bndgsh706 Only soft ballistic armor (usually tightly woven kevlar fibres) can be shot through with a crossbow. Hard ballistic armor (the type of armor intended to stop rifle bullets) completely stops crossbow bolts, and barely even gets damaged in the process.

This is one episode I've been awaiting a long time. More crossbow goodness, please! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear about your user experience of shooting crossbows vs shooting guns. And how about shooting competition-standard crossbows? And there's so much more!
Would love to see some slowmo shots on your usual assortment of targets. Also its important to mention the draw strength of the bow in addition to the stats of the arrows.
Crossbows were pretty cool. Next, one of those medieval style crossbows that can get absurd draw weight numbers would be fun to watch. I always wondered how much a 400-600 lb rope crossbow could penetrate with how heavy the ammo can be. they can go all the way up to 1200 even, but you might want hearing protection for stuff like that.
The main problem with the older crossbows with the crazy draw strength is that that the draw length is not that long so it’s actually pretty comparable. What actually does make the difference is the arrow itself. Tod’s Workshop has some vids on this if you’re interested as another reply mentioned. ua-cam.com/video/bU2SkGz0RYM/v-deo.html
The crossbow episode was great and educational (as always)! It was a great surprise to see it in my UA-cam feedbag. I'd love to see what you do with crossbows in the future on your channels. Cheers to you & Merry Christmas, Kentucky Ballistics!
That was really cool! It would be cool to see heavier crossbows, like the windlass crossbows in the late middle ages that had a draw weight up to 1200lbs. Also, it could be cool to see some of the armor piercing (I believe they are called bodkin points) that were used at the time and see what they can do
Keep in mind, though, that despite having a 1200 lb draw, those crossbows 1. only had a draw length of about 6 inches 2. lost WAY more of their energy to moving the bow limbs themselves than a modern crossbow.
@@Bubben246 that is true. Modern technology is far superior. It would be interesting to see how far they'd come if they were used for more than hunting

One thing I learnt when I started shooting my crossbow was ALWAYS have something (thick foam) behind the target so you don't lose your bolts. They do get expensive!

More stuff like this please… yes it’s not as explosive as blowing things up and the slow motion and watching the splatter going slow but… the crossbow has a different reaction it shows how in reality a crossbow can be used in a home defense. And if something happened that you couldn’t get ammo for some reason you can get arrows almost anywhere and arrows anywhere in abundance 😁

Let's see the crossbows return. It was a cool and nice little change. An unexpected surprise for sure but a welcome one. Although I must admit I'm disappointed you didn't show us the zombie on the inside of your truck. I would've loved to see what kinda damage it took from that kind of a blow.
Thanks for sharing. That's absolutely insane. Never thought of CrossBows and Arrows to be that dangerous. Lesson learned, using CrossBows can make as much damage as a gun - but, it is much more silent. Well, one has to use some more muscle strength to use a CrossBow. But, I like it.

When shouldering a crossbow, your offhand that you use to brace the end of the weapon, if you are clumsy enough with your hand placement, your thumb doesn't have to be in the broadhead's path or in front of the bow at all, just anywhere in that gap from bowlimb to scope is a Finger-Be-Goner
THATS WHY WE HAVE VERTICAL GRIPS, PEOPLE
@@fivebooks8498 There is a brutal photo of a guy who managed to put an arrow thru his hand off his draw with a normal bow.
Correct, they were the nemesis of armored knights in the Middle Ages. They easily penetrated most armor of the day.
The .458 Socom 600 grain bullet drop 100 feet at 200 yards for instance
It’s like hand artillery lol

My crossbow is somewhat loud even though it shoots at 80lbs force.
They are quiet but not silent. silent would imply a 100% lack of sound.
_Very_ lethal. There's a reason that they kept on using crossbows in warfare for a couple hundred years after guns arrived on the scene. Guns overtook them eventually, but they are definitely no joke.
Yeah
so true
Imagine being shot by these things
It's still used today by some special forces
@@zebjensen4251
"You do realize that crossbows were used as late as the early eighteen hundreds right?"
In hunting, yes.
"many professional marksman used crossbows" is a statement that I had found little to no evidence to confirm or deny, right alongside "Infact many rich had several crossbow men as body guards because of there power and skill"
While I am sure that such has indeed happened, I highly doubt it was as prolific as you suggest. If you could provide sources that I may have missed, that would be helpful.

Would love to see the effects of a compound bow on a ballistic dummy as well, just to see the penetration effectiveness compared to a crossbow. Thanks for the video!
Then we can have a comparison between field tips, fixed broad heads, and mechanical broad head types betweenbow types.

And this is why all weapons experts say never point a weapon at anything you don't want to destroy 😂
after seeing so many bullets get stuck in these ballistic gel targets.. it's quite impressive and terrifying that crossbows can do so much.. sometimes old doesn't mean useless huh
It's a bit complicated so I'll just say it's like the difference between hitting water at 500 mph in a belly flop and pencil diving off a small bridge. The penetration is more in the case of the diver even though the speed was much higher in the case of the 500mph guy.
Don't know if that explains it well but hope it helps
exxxxtra penetration due to momentum from the length of the bolt. That's why longer tank sabot penetrates thicker armor.

it is lol because the arrows could cause a lot of other injuries then just stabbing and bleeding. not gonna say them all because i would be typing this forever, but some other injuries could include: Internal Bleeding, Concussions, (depends if arrow/bolt is rusty or not) Tetnis or Lockjaw, etc.
@@Delta_do_a_spin science
@@Delta_do_a_spin Both convert potential energy(the charge/ voltage aka potential difference that energizes the magnets and the spring energy of the bowstring). Something has to have mass and velocity to have kinetic energy.
A regular firearm does too... undetonated gunpowder has potential energy that is released upon detonation.
All three lose a fraction of the total energy due to but not limited to losses in the resistance/inductance of the circuit, friction losses in the bow and gas pressure leakage from the firearm. All three lose heat energy.
i think its better than getting shot with a slug😅

Man, I think you exaggerated lol 12 bullets is a LOT of bullets

A bodkin point out of an 800-1000lb windlass crossbow will go through a lot of things
About 1980 a man my dad knew made a crossbow using an automotive leaf spring that shot ball bearings. It shot a bearing all the way through a 1975 Pontiac grand prix, in the driver door and out the passenger side, and it was my car!
@@pughoneycutt1986 lol ... and that was just a warning shot. Those Grand Prix were big, but very nice, memory lane. That's funny, your car. 👍 And 👌
These need more respect
I would be mortified going to hospital with and arrow stuck in me.
Something about that “thwap” sound too
Fk hell no
As an archer and a marksman both, I'd be super interested in seeing crossbows as a regular feature. Even compound, recurve, or historical bows.
I'd love to see a regular bow
Bows are cool
How quick would you be able to make a bow in the wild?
@@KingShibe In my case, slightly longer than it would take me to starve to death.
I really didn't think a crossbow video would be fun, but this was a blast to watch!
There is a channel called joergsprave, he has crossbows that take magazines of bolts.
*no powder required. 😃😃😄😄
@@MattyEngland Oh yeah! I had seen some of his catapult videos in the past, but never subbed. I'm changing that today. Thanks for the suggestion
@@DinoPwn No worries bro, he's put out some new designs in the last 6 months or so too.
@@random.3665 hmm, so it appears. I guess the one who told me that was either lying or was misinformed themselves. Thank you for clarifying.
@@Crimnox_Cinder Np mate, its a common misconception, no doubt.
@@random.3665 crossbow can go through modern bullet armor tho.
I just started hunting with a crossbow this year. I like it since I’ve had a heart attack and strong thanks to God that I’m still here and you too, buddy. After your accident with the 50 thankful to God we are both here, but yes, I love the crossbows and thank you for serving Kentucky as a Kentucky state trooper😊
Big fan of the crossbow content. I bought one this year myself (wicked ridge nxt 400 similar to the tenpoint you had)to hunt with here in Wisconsin. It's nice seeing unbiased testing of these products. I definitely know what they're capable of. They're whitetail kryptonite.
True dropped my first buck this year in wisconsin with my crossbow killed him so fast he dropped on the spot
I'd love to see one of those medieval crossbows against the zombie torso. Those things have some insane draw weight and considerably G I R T H Y bolts. Maybe he could get in touch with Tod's Workshop 🤔
i saw a thing about it, the modern xbows are more powerful, because they have a longer time accelerating the bolt
@@andyf4292 I'm sure they are a lot more powerful, but I'd like to see the effectiveness of the older technology in action.
@@shirsh4657 have a look on Tods workshop.
To me the medieval crossbows are just a lot cooler. The retro feel gets me every time.
@@andyf4292 The bolts are definitely different though. Historical crossbow quarrels are thicc and stubby. Modern crossbows just shoot modern arrows.
It’d be cool to know the power ratings of the crossbows being used. Lets see more of them!
I use a killer instinct boss 405 and it shoots at 405fps
td 400 shoots about 400fps with 400grain arrow, sub-1 should be around 320-350 with 400g, if i remember right sub-1 factory arrows are 375g and shoots 350, but this depends on settings and which model of sub-1 it is
@@flyfin108 grain... wth, are we still in middle ages?
Lets measure with feathers too.
@@warrax111 atleast they use single unit for all archery, atleast all around western world

With crossbows you're supposed to unscrew the head of the ammo and pull it out to remove the rounds. I'd love to see more crossbow videos!
I wonder how those bows would do against modern armor.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive me too honestly
No modern armor but the Todd Cutler / Todd's Workshop, has a lot of videos of medieval crossbows against various targets.
@@MWBallsRight as I was grabbing links I see this comment getting replies XD ya’ll work fast
The main problem with the older crossbows with the crazy draw strength is that that the draw length is not that long so it’s actually pretty comparable. What actually does make the difference is the arrow itself.
Tod’s Workshop has some vids on this if you’re interested as another reply mentioned.

I was impressed at the devastating results these bolts deliver! So quietly too..yikes! Very Impressive, and thanks for the video! Your style is great.
this guy was my childhood youtuber(favorite) and he still is respect him
Loved the different video. I would actually love to see compound or even old fashioned warbows.
The crossbow episode was great and educational (as always)! It was a great surprise to see it in my UA-cam feedbag. I'd love to see what you do with crossbows in the future on your channels. Cheers to you & Merry Christmas, Kentucky Ballistics!
Now Scott is silent and deadly
But he Will anyways love his boomsticks and hand cannons. Lol

Today, someone in London UK was shot dead by police when he threatened innocents with a crossbow. Their kinetic energy is serious stuff.
The Most Excellent
Order of the British Empire
That was really cool! It would be cool to see heavier crossbows, like the windlass crossbows in the late middle ages that had a draw weight up to 1200lbs. Also, it could be cool to see some of the armor piercing (I believe they are called bodkin points) that were used at the time and see what they can do
Keep in mind, though, that despite having a 1200 lb draw, those crossbows
1. only had a draw length of about 6 inches
2. lost WAY more of their energy to moving the bow limbs themselves than a modern crossbow.
@@Bubben246 that is true. Modern technology is far superior. It would be interesting to see how far they'd come if they were used for more than hunting
My first time ever watching the destruction of what these do. Holy crap! That was GNARLY!!! I’m all for more videos like this, Scott.
You have my vote as well. I would be curious to see how accurate a crossbow can be at 100 yards.
As an archer myself, in the right hands the crossbow would be very accurate.
I’ve hunted with crossbow since I was little, I’ve hit deer further and still ripped through em like it was nothing, I think the range finder showed like 130 on my furthest one I’ve actually killed
Y’know, it would’ve been cool to see you invite Norman Reedus to shoot crossbows with ya.
Can we just appreciate how much of a masterpiece the bag for the crossbow is
One thing I learnt when I started shooting my crossbow was ALWAYS have something (thick foam) behind the target so you don't lose your bolts. They do get expensive!
I would personally love to see more stuff with these. Though I'll always prefer the big guns like the elephant rifles, I would be very interested to see you test these things against stuff like body armor, kevlar and bulletproof glass
10:44 : The Deadpool wound.
13:04 Imagine if the other end broke when you pulled it out, would've been hilarious
I would love to see more content like this! I’m new to the hunting world and I have found an absolute love for crossbows. Killed my first doe this season with it!
Crossbows don’t shoot arrows.
@@buckfutter99 . Wow

YES, really enjoyed the cross bows. Possibly try the smaller hand cross bows side by side to see how effective they are compared
Scott you have the best intros on UA-cam! The antics with all your supporting characters that big stupid lizard are absolutely golden. Thank you and keep up the good work. I’d love to see a pressure gauge on a barrel to test different ammo pressure consistency and barrel fail points. Obviously not quite like the one you did in April 21’. 👍🏼
Let's see the crossbows return. It was a cool and nice little change. An unexpected surprise for sure but a welcome one. Although I must admit I'm disappointed you didn't show us the zombie on the inside of your truck. I would've loved to see what kinda damage it took from that kind of a blow.
I approve of this content, big time. All of Scott's videos are great, but this one is really a standout!
Just for clarification, if it wasn't already stated, the ammunition for a crossbow is known as a bolt, not an arrow ^_^ bolts come in cases, arrows come in quivers. Just wanted to give ya that info iffin ya didn't already have it, big guy. Love the content.
loved the crossbow spotlight, would love to see more of them, there are so many crazy gnarly broadheads and penetrating tips, you definitely wouldn't run out of content lol
Love your intros. I am pretty sure this is more lethal than a 9mm. Have always wondered how lethal they really are. Thanks for another awesome video.
the crossbow is the perfect mix of lethality, sound and the fact that it has reusable ammo

Would love to see the power and penetrative difference between the cheap pistol crossbows up to what was used today.
