It's a great car, one of my favourites as I owned one back in the day. Still miss it and was thinking of buying another but prices have really shot up.I love the interior and the piping on the seats. I think the young lad liked it and was spot on with his judgement whereas you were a bit harsh in yours to put it politely!! It was one of the few automatic Porsches back then and fast enough to pull away from most cars. Superb, powerful and effortless on a motorway. Being a large engine not the most efficient economy wise but great fun to drive clutch free!!
Hello Jack, sorry you were not enthused by the 928..............I LOVE THEM BUGGERS! Almost bought one many times but I got the "sweats" when I looked deeply into the cost of maintaining one to my high standards. I finally gave up on owning one but I still vividly remember the splendid drives on curvy roads while testing them. Thanks for the video. I always look forward to the next.
It was the fastest production car you could buy for several years running. I had a 1986 S with stick. Loved that car and to me it was kind of a German Corvette. Just think of how crude the 911 cars were in the late 70s when the 928 debuted. It was also voted European car of the year. It's remarkable that it still looks contemporary all these decades later. Very advanced car even today, with an absence of technology overkill.
If you go into ANY car review convinced you’re not going to like it, chances are you’re not going to like it. Setting aside your unfair assessment these are amazing vehicles with a host of useful and unique features you never bothered to touch on, but that set it aside in the market.
The 928 is my favorite Porsche. I love them and I own an '84 model S. Nice video and I respect your honest assessment that it's not the kind of car you are into. I feel the same way about 911s. Too ubiquitous, not comfortable, and never liked the way they sound. But I understand why they are loved by their followers, I just prefer a different cup of tea. :)
As your only Porsche maybe not but if you had a small collection then a 928 is a must ! Nothing else like it ! Imagine collecting one of these in the late eighties or early nineties brand new.
This car preceded the aforementioned Ferraris in the video and was built more for the North American Market. I don't know that it makes sense anywhere else in the world but you would certainly have take into consideration what the competition was like in its target market. It's a beast of a car that handles very well and has classy looks and I love it because it isn't a 911
It was amusing to see how the viewpoint changed from one of indifference, to a bit more positive, to quite positive towards the end. Personally, I love 928's. I've owned a 1983 928 S manual and a 1987 928 S4 manual, and both had awesome torque and handling, besides supreme comfort and of course the beautiful, timeless shape. Thank you for the excellent upload!
Michael D thanks for watching and for the feedback Michael! Would really love to try a manual S4.. I'm sure it would totally change the feel. Make it far more muscular!!
Number27 Thanks for the reply, Number27. I've never driven an automatic 928, and although I believe the Mercedes gearbox is very good, I doubt it could really compare with being able to change down at will. The massive kick in the rear that comes from changing down to a very low gear in a 928 is quite mind boggling! Nothing else I've test driven, including De Tomaso Panteras, a 930 Porsche Turbo, and even two Lamborghini Countaches (as marvelous as all these cars are in their own way), can quite compare to it. Would love to own a 928 GTS, but they are very scarce. Once again, a great video, thank you.
You can down shift an auto 928 at any speed you want. Just keep in mind there is no safety to prevent your face meeting the windshield if you downshift too far (hard to do under 120 mph) and the gears are much longer than in a manual so you may have to shift down farther than you think. Just to put this in perspective, an early 3 speed auto is capable of 85 mph in first gear. They are much more fun at high speeds on the highway than the manuals, which are more fun at lower speeds around town and in the twisties.
TheTardis157 As you say, and as far as I've heard, a 928 automatic will respond almost instantaneously to the amount of force with which you depress the accelerator pedal. I think what it boils down to is with a manual (as was the case with my two 928's) it is more involving and therefore more fun, in that speed can be controlled with both accelerator and gearshift changes, as opposed to simply depressing the loud pedal, especially in town driving and on tight bends. All said, they are spectacular cars in virtually every way, and in my opinion reward the driver like no other.
Michael D the best ones to throw through the gears is an early 3 speed car as far as autos go. you can really wring them out as the U.S. cars have no rev limiter. the 5 speed cars have a different feel about them as they are more engaging as you said. the only way to get a auto 928 to instantly respond to throttle to downshift is either depress the kickdown or upgrade to the gts throttle assembly. they tend to not want to downshift on their own, but making them do it against the autos will is a lot of fun.
remember the time it came out and compare it with a 911 of the same age. My mom owned a 928 and some Porsches before it and I can tell you that you can hit the Autobahn and drive it at 270km/h for the next 4 hours without any level of stress at all (what my mom always did) while in a 911 from that era it is very hard to keep it in a straight line once you are above 200km/h. IMO comparing it with a 911 can not do the trick coz it is designed to do different things. Is the 911 sportier than the 928? Sure it is. Is the flat six more punchy than the V8? Sure it is. Is the 928 a good sporty car. You bet it is. Like what you said at the beginning, it is a GT so compare it with other GTs and I think it stands up very well. It is 10x more reliable than the Jag of that age. The 8series Beamer came 10 years later and it is less sporty. The Mercedes SL is not sporty at all and it drives like a tank. What ever the Colonies build at the time can not compare at all, not a Mustang nor a Corvette. Aston Martin of that time looked awefull. So name a better GT. There maybe is one that can compete that I don't recall at the moment but the 928 surely was and still is a GT highlight.
I always really liked the 928, and still think it looks pretty cool. Sure it proved a dead end along with the 924/944 in terms of a replacement for the 911… but viewed in isolation and as you say an alternative to other GT bruisers of the time… I think it visually and mechanically held its own!
Really funny that the little man loves the car... He's got an eye for it ;-) The 928 is timeless and a much better car then the 911 of that time. It's not really fast?? It's faster then the 911 from lets say '87 when the S4 came out first. even the automatic does 0-100 in 6,1 sec and the 911 in 6,3 (if you are a real good driver...) topspeed 270 versus 240 in the 911... Lets say it's just not your car, and I can understand that. It corners a bit different then a 911, but... it's a fantastic car. Period!
Hey Wilhemus, thanks for watching and for your comments. I totally agree it's just not my type of car.. as I mentioned if I was in the market for a big Gt this would definitely be on top of my list! I did enjoy having it though.
I have a 928 - I have also had 914 and 911s - The 928 in my opinion is the king of the 80's and 90's - if you are lucky enough to have a late model manual transmission you might have one of the best all around cars EVER made.
Launch it properly from 1st gear. Since you had a busted CB best way would be stop, select 2 then D. Hit the throttle to hold down the kickdown button under the pedal. Then ask Oliver what he thinks. My 1989 928 S4 still does 0-100Kph in 5.6secs doing it this way. You can drop it into 2nd as high as 90kph and it'll reach 125kph before needing to shift to 3 or D. You can convert to mph.
The 928 is still the only sports car I believe to have won the ECOTY in 1978. Having owned a 928 in the past and currently own a 996 convertible they are very different cars. The 996 starter sounds rubbish as though it isn't going to start whereas the 928 is almost an event with passers by stopping to hear the chicka chika vroooooom as it fires up. Because of your poorly arm you would not, I think, have been able to explore the handling of the 928 properly it does take a bit of man handling to get the best out of it plus you really have to boot the accelerator as it has a two stage kickdown. If the car was wallowy and had done 140 k I suspect the suspension and bushes had seen their best some time ago as mine certainly didn't wallow and was quite agile, just needed a firm hand. Also those things were surprisingly practical as you could actually fit someone in the back, 996 only children under about 12. The boot was pretty good as well being a hatchback and managed to get a Merc W124 drivers seat in there to be refurbished. Not a bad review though and always good to see the old girl.
King Brilliant in its day it was faster than the 930, and broke a land speed record. So its fast, its just now days everything upwards of a hot hatch is fast.
Had 3 Maserati Biturbos which easily bested the big old 928 in its day. Still have a wanting for one however though. Only been in one so far and found it low, big and cumbersome. But I'm still drawn to them for a longer trial 🙂
Nice video, I had a '73 450SLC and it definitely wasn't a drivers car. I have a 928 now and it ticks all my boxes, but it's definitely not as chuckable as a 911, I like my engines at the front though.
Gary Fishman hey thanks Gary... an SLC would appeal more than the SL but agree with you I'd definitely have this over all others of its kind!! Great tourer
Hope you heal quick, always loved the 928 from Risky Business. Very clean example. Need to find your friend's son a proper Patriots hat to replace the Seahawks!
Put an 89 S4 in first (in the auto) and it hauls because the gearing is so short that year only. I have an 89 S4 and an 81. They're both good, but for different reasons. The 81 can corner at a much higher speed and with more precision than my S4 can because it is so much lighter at 3200 pounds along with the factory Bilstien sport suspension. The S4 is faster in a straight line because it has 90 more horsepower. The place these cars really work is at speeds above 80 mph where they can out accelerate most other cars on the road. Getting to 85 mph in first gear (auto) doesn't hurt either. Try an earlier car, they feel much more like sports cars than the later ones do. Nice video by the way and I hope your collar bone heals without issue.
Hi Jack, would love to hear your thoughts on a manual GTS version - if you can get hold of one. Also have you tried an R129 Merc 500sl from the same era? Would love to see a comparison between the two.
I've been watching all the 928 videos I can find and this ranks among the most informative and also charming - thank you. I'm thinking next for me is a manual 928 or 944 but with an engine swap. Recommendations? I'd like more efficient engine and a power bump but all I'm finding are LS engines used.
acchaladka thanks for your kind comments! Much appreciated. Wow sounds like a big project doing an engine swap on a 928 or 944.. keep us updated ... I don't have any expertise on engine swaps but looking forward to what you do!
Thanks guys, just seeing these comments now and glad it was of interest. In the end I’m having a modified 944 S2 (the 3.0-litre engine with bolted on turbo, built by a performance house owner) looked at for purchase today. It’s fast, and interesting and my heart is still with the 928. Unfortunately they’ve gone up in price and most exceed my budget now unless I get a non-runner rebuilt for me (because I have no garage). I’d still like to do a 928 swap but I hate most of the stock engines either for power or for fuel consumption reasons. Rennlist forum suggests the Ford Duratec V6 or the Porsche Coyote engine are good fit, but I don’t need 700 hp, I want excellent torque and highway cruise plus some sway bar / suspension upgrades mainly. For the 944, it’s much more affordable but who wants someone else’s Frankenstein? I’ve understood that the Audi 1.8 is the popular swap option for the 944, 150 lbs lighter and an optional (?) turbo. So I’m still dithering and useless over here; cheers from French Canada.
Just strap your hand to the wheel with a string of cloth. I had a broken collar bone, and its not like its a serious disabling bone fracture, except when moving you arm above your head.
Derek Paisley Cheers Derek! I think my average was about 22mpg but that included a lot of Motorway stuff. Basically it will do low teens in town and about 25-28mpg on a slow motorway run
If the example you drove rode as you describe it probably needed work due to its 140,000 miles. My S4 has very tight roadholding and corners like its on tracks. The Mercedes sourced gearbox will always start off in 2nd gear unless you select otherwise. Then you can expect 0 to 60 mph in around 5 seconds. Maybe it seems slower because it does it quietly and effortlessly?
as you can see, i´m a owner of a 928 GTS from 1994. A late model. I would like to suggest to change the shock absorbers. I did that last season (and many more repairs) and i have "another" car right now. Btw nice video and thanks for your comments. Regards from Kempten, Bavaria.
I bought a '95 928 GTS RHD Manual a few weeks back at auction, and I must say it's a delight to drive. So planted, and it really really shifts down the road. If you're going to buy a 928, I would highly recommend spending a few extra quid and getting a manual.
Get a rear muffler bypass...a chip from PORKEN...and add suspension upgrades( new bushings...bilstein/eibachs..sway bar upgrades) and it wont be “wallo-ee and soft”. You got to drive a beautiful example there. 👍🍻
When it came out many Germans called it "Opa's Porsche" ) Grampa's Porsche due to the auto', mainly, just like they named the little anemic Boxster a "secretary's Porsche when it was newish
I have had several 928s. The five speed is the only choice. You can run 4th gear to 130 mph (209 KPH) and 5th still pulls hard. I have included links to Mark Anderson racing the 928 on stock tires. You will note him destroying several 911 Carreras and doing quite well in the turns. ua-cam.com/video/P29nHru4fvI/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/We7IS_afCww/v-deo.html
I owned an XJS for 6 months hated it ," an English Trans-Am..," that was 25 years ago, that's how long Iv'e owned my 928 now , would'nt swap it for the world ! XJS = Whale 928 always a Shark !
la 928 s4 1987 boite manuel j'en possède une depuis 2007 cela fait 13 ans elle marche fort j 'aime la 911 mais faute de financement je me suit rabattue sure 928s4 je ne regrette rien.
Fabulous car, but complex with ruinous bills. l owned a show condition 928 S4 in 2010/11 and it cost me £2800 in eight months. The previous owner spent £10,500 in eighteen months. They guy who bought it from me? The gearbox failed after five weeks draining his wallet of £2500. No thanks. l swapped mine for a BMW Z3 3.0 M Sport While obviously not a Porsche 928 it has a superb engine and in three years has only cost a few hundred pounds in repairs, plus it's easy to service at home. Despite the above l still miss the 928 though!
Rick2010100 hey Rick, it was pretty thirsty but I did not do any mpg calculations while I had it. I think gentle motorway was about 20mpg and the rest was downhill from there!
You could do the car a favor, and and get a better acessment if you we're properly informed as to how to drive it? You'll notice the shifter has some numbers! Research that! Surly the standard shift would give you more of what you seem to be looking for? I'd say Oliver has a better handle on this cars luster!!! WHALE??? Take it out on a good straight away up to 150mph. Then repost! (:
u need to drive manual, not automatic. with manual gear box u can use him properly. its like it reads your mind. have s model 1983. and gts 1994. both manual and i know what i'm saying. its a shark and it drives like go-cart
"It's not particularly fast". Well 165 mph top speed was at the time one of the fastest production cars on the market, if not the fastest.
I like it, the interior still looks pretty good for its age.
Marc Tordoff yep, they weather well like other Porsches of this era!

joeblownorty hey thanks Joe, appreciate you taking time to watch the video! Do love the engine!!
joeblownorty and
928 is my favorite too. It has no use to compare with 911, such a differnt car. Really a shame they stopped builiding it in 95.
The new 911 are now longer and wider looking more like the 928.
As your only Porsche maybe not but if you had a small collection then a 928 is a must ! Nothing else like it ! Imagine collecting one of these in the late eighties or early nineties brand new.

The R129 does not drive like a tank. The R107 does.
That interior is great, love the leather colour , sounds fab, more reviews with Oliver hahah, loved his face when you booted it, priceless.

what a nice refreshing review. My mum had a 928S back in 85. Loved them ever since.
Fantastic!! Thanks for watching
Really funny that the little man loves the car... He's got an eye for it ;-)

no car with pop up lights is timless dude its 80s like bros
Jay Barker my god, what modern car are you driving. Ive owned a 928, own a cayenne now, the cayenne lights up the night like an A380!
Incredibly funky seats in those cars
I have a 928 - I have also had 914 and 911s - The 928 in my opinion is the king of the 80's and 90's - if you are lucky enough to have a late model manual transmission you might have one of the best all around cars EVER made.
It’s a very good GT car!
The 928 was misunderstood trying to be a 911 replacement, it’s a great gt crusher, it’s a different car, but a great car in its own right.
Nice car, regret selling my 1986 928S. Values have really ramped up since 2015. I can't get one for less than $20K.
The 928 designer in chief had an aircraft background, that inspired the 928 design cues!
You not comparing the beauty of a 928 with a banger of a Jaguar XJS??? Please stop swearing.
hahaha
I know what load of bOllOcks - 928 was a poster car not an XJS jeez
good assessment, I have a 1981 Porsche 928. a project, but enjoy her
srwilliams1963 thanks for watching and good luck with your project!!
You can convert to mph.
the 928 was faster than all 911 except the turbo and that was a special order so you have no idea of what your talking about.
i know the reviewer hasn't got a clue
Love the 928!
The 928 is still the only sports car I believe to have won the ECOTY in 1978. Having owned a 928 in the past and currently own a 996 convertible they are very different cars. retepyam5858 the only V8 to ever will as well!
"It's got enough power for most situations" (7:40)
What situations would require more than 300 hp???
simon lloyd I’m always amazed that people don’t understand power:weight ratio. And that no one uses the number!
King Brilliant in its day it was faster than the 930, and broke a land speed record. So its fast, its just now days everything upwards of a hot hatch is fast.
Every situation requires that kind of power. I especially need it at the McDonalds drive throughs.
Torque to weight ratio and power to aerodynamic drag ratio are the important stats. Where in the rev range is the power is a good question too ?
When you are used to driving American Muscle cars!! 550hp in my '67 G.T.O feels just right!
Had 3 Maserati Biturbos which easily bested the big old 928 in its day. Still have a wanting for one however though. Only been in one so far and found it low, big and cumbersome. But I'm still drawn to them for a longer trial 🙂

K Nola Cheers K, happy new year to you! I'll pass your message onto Oliver on the Seahawks!
K Nola it's a good honest car and great mechanically but could do with a few cosmetic tweaks!
i loved this car in the 80s but i feel thats where the car is trapped - 911 is timeless

lol you're proof positive opinions can be wrong.

TheTardis157 thanks Tardis!! Interesting what you say about earlier lighter models, I'll try and get a go!
Hi Jack, would love to hear your thoughts on a manual GTS version - if you can get hold of one. Also have you tried an R129 Merc 500sl from the same era? Would love to see a comparison between the two.
Comparing the 928 to 911 is like comparing Sean Connery to Steve McQueen.
Nice
niacal4nia lol Sean Connery is the 911 and Steve McQueen is 928
until you remember the 928 was supposed to replace the 911...it'll be like Sean Connery being asked to ride a bike in The Great Escape
I don't have any expertise on engine swaps but looking forward to what you do!
absolutely agree - great video
944 Turbo is fantastic!
Just strap your hand to the wheel with a string of cloth. I had a broken collar bone, and its not like its a serious disabling bone fracture, except when moving you arm above your head.
928 IS my FAVORITE Porsche!!! 😁
Good review !, come on then in thet week what did you manage as an MPG ?
Derek Paisley Cheers Derek! I think my average was about 22mpg but that included a lot of
Motorway stuff. Basically it will do low teens in town and about 25-28mpg on a slow motorway run
Btw its a whale shark
Mine had that interior but without the garnet red piping
If the example you drove rode as you describe it probably needed work due to its 140,000 miles. My S4 has very tight roadholding and corners like its on tracks. The Mercedes sourced gearbox will always start off in 2nd gear unless you select otherwise. Then you can expect 0 to 60 mph in around 5 seconds. Maybe it seems slower because it does it quietly and effortlessly?
I’m about to get one of these!
Good luck buddy!!
I like it
as you can see, i´m a owner of a 928 GTS from 1994. A late model. I would like to suggest to change the shock absorbers. I did that last season (and many more repairs) and i have "another" car right now. Btw nice video and thanks for your comments. Regards from Kempten, Bavaria.
Chr. T. You're absolutely right, on all my cars the shocks have made the biggest difference! Thanks for watching !
great assessment, I love 928's what year is this?
Cant remember Ernesto.. they are cool cars!
I quite like the 928, especially the later models with the 993 or cup wheels. I'll have a manual in dark blue please...
Ewan Turner nice spec!!! Thanks for watching Ewan
Another fun video there. I like the 928. Would be interesting to see how a manual compares and how the driving experience changes.
Stanley Leask Cheers stan and thanks agains for wAtching and your comments! Manual boxes do transform these I've heard!!
Im going to test drive one thats a manual in a few days... when i do ill let you know
zestydude87 please do, would be good to hear!
I bought a '95 928 GTS RHD Manual a few weeks back at auction, and I must say it's a delight to drive. So planted, and it really really shifts down the road. If you're going to buy a 928, I would highly recommend spending a few extra quid and getting a manual.
Rory Crisp-Jones thanks for the advice Rory, enjoy your GTS.. I ai e heard they are the model to have!! And thanks for watching!
928 S4 - My fav Porsche mwaaaaaaa :)
I'm going to say something that's going to be insulting... It honestly sounds like my Cadillac allante I used to have and I love that car
Lovely sound. This was the ultimate Top Trump car in it’s day.
Always loved the 928. I would go for the manual transmission though.
Apparently that transformS it. Would
Love to try a manual!! Thanks for watching!
I’ve one, a 928GT from 1990. It’s a blast. Never seen a whale doing a wheelin 😂
Best measure of whether a car is good or not. Put a 12 year old in it and ask him if it's good. I dig it. Kids are honest. No pretense, no pomp.
Completely agree!! Thanks for watching Brian
I broke my hand in a cycling accident and was told I must not drive and I had an automatic
Interesting to hear the young guys opinions since fun cars should appeal to the child in us.
Seahawks and a 928 =)
I owned an XJS for 6 months hated it ," an English Trans-Am..," that was 25 years ago, that's how long Iv'e owned my 928 now , would'nt swap it for the world !
XJS = Whale 928 always a Shark !
How about a 6 series BMW of the same era..? would that temp you?
yeh, nice cars, although I'd still prefer my 928, 25 years is a long time.
You have to get a 968 if you want a shark.
Exactly! But the GTS is really fast...
la 928 s4 1987 boite manuel j'en possède une depuis 2007 cela fait 13 ans elle marche fort j 'aime la 911 mais faute de financement je me suit rabattue sure 928s4 je ne regrette rien.
It's a bad a** shark!
No thanks. l swapped mine for a BMW Z3 3.0 M Sport
While obviously not a Porsche 928 it has a superb engine and in three years has only cost a few hundred pounds in repairs, plus it's easy to service at home.
Despite the above l still miss the 928 though!
A Killer Whale. Everyone has an opinion.
No words about the fuel consumption? My one burns fuel like a booster rocket.
Rick2010100 hey Rick, it was pretty thirsty but I did not do any mpg calculations while I had it. I think gentle motorway was about 20mpg and the rest was downhill from there!
@@Number27 Just drove my 1986.5 928S on a 2,300 mile road trip with with average speeds between 75 and 90 mph. Averaged 20 mpg for the trip.
@ 0:56 you shouldn't mix tyre treads like that - recipe for disaster!
It's not a shark. It's a killer whale!
Sounds like most of your friends have never been in a 928
No 27 - and a half.
Killer whale ! ;)
A bottomless money pit.
