Saw his son twice. He took a picture of my wife and Nicki Sullivan and Buddy Holly Labor Day in Lubbock. Very gracious guy. Saw him several years later at 50 years later Winter Dance Party. He carried his father's legacy well
The Big Bopper. Some names are iconic. I bet he was a lovey,dovey,fun lovin,partyin,good timin guy who was confident as all hell with the ladies. The dude everybody would have loved to have at all family gatherings and parties. Unique and fun approach to music and very talented.

He made the first music video which everyone has made now and coined the term Disc Jockey, and though Chantilly Lace was his real big hit. He had other good bopping tunes that deserve more respect and he was a talented songwriter too. He pioneered mixing humour with music something not unlike Weird Al, Allan Sherman and so on. If anything his life should be covered. Richie Valens didn't have a long career either but they made a movie about him and he's beloved everywhere. It's JP's turn to have his story told then and only then the trio can be completed.
They should have done a Movie on the Big Bopper as well . They only did one for Buddy and Ritchie . His son would play the role real good . The Big Bopper was truly a funny and silly performer and singer that made the fans love him He knew how to entertain and make people laugh . Then, his son Big Bopper Jr goes and digs up his fathers remains so he can announce that his father's corpse has barely decomposed over 40 years??!! Thats just weird man. dios mio!

Richardson had seen college students doing a dance called The Bop, and he decided to call himself "The Big Bopper". wikipedia
Barley Educated adding to that, he was also 5’ 10” and 210 pounds so he felt it was suitable for him.
Since he was a Disc Jockey (The first of his kind btw) I think he used that name as a DJ name too a character he made.
