LKLS | Reinventing "Spears" in… 2024 (DS3 Commentary)

  • When a man and a weapon love each other veeery much…
The Lothric Knight Longspear has always met a mixed reception. It got some praise for being a pretty, if unoriginal, “spear-like”. But it was always followed with ire: mocked for being a poise-antenna in a poiseless game, and failing to perform where spears often could. Perhaps unsurprisingly, few people ever understood the wonderful weirdness under the hood - the qualities that turn this simple pokey stick into Fromsoft’s crown jewel.
So, join me on a final, feverish rant as I explain everything you never wanted to know about my favorite weapon in Souls history.
    FAQs:
    - Q: 40 minutes wasn’t enough for me. Do you have anything else to share?
    - A: Yup! Here is the “Longspear Bible”. In it, you can find the Poise Calculator I wrote for easier buildmaking, all my poise/hyperarmor testing data, and a list of combos/pseudocombos. Enjoy! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
    - Q: I wanna try the Longspear. What build should I make?
    - A: There are a lot of options! Dex is best, but you’ll also want Endurance. The Longspear is a combo-based weapon, and depriving yourself of stamina means your combo game… finishes early. And nobody likes that.
Below meta, I would never go over 40 Dex - put the spare points in Endurance. My SL 90 build actually has 36 (!!!) Endurance for endless combos (also optimal for my beloved Valorheart). At meta I get 70-75 Dex for those post-60 Dex damage returns.
At 90 and meta, I’d also consider a Quality build (for weapon variety, plus guardbreaking options like offhand Demon Fist) or an elemental build (for shield chip and hybrid spellcasting).
    - Q: So what IS the deal with the Pike?
    - A: Think of the Pike as a weaker, shorter version of LKLS. It shares all the same properties, aside from the extra poise. It is worse on its optimal build (Dex) but its stat reqs make sense for Raw and elemental builds (which are often stat-starved). In fact, it is competitive damage-wise with LKLS on raw and elemental infusions, specifically! So if you can’t spare the stats, go with the Pike, baby.
    - Q: Uh, why 2024?
    - A: Sorry for the wait!! I crunched really hard in 2022 to get this video out before ER, but I stopped because it was compromising quality (and my sanity). Then ER took over for a while. It’s fine though, because revisiting DS3 in 2023/2024 gave me a lot of good clips and a different perspective.
    - Q: Is this really your last video?
    - A: Probably not! But it will be the last thing I make of this scale. ER isn’t the best game for this type of content (imo), and I can’t just make DS3 videos for the rest of my life. So I’ll have to wait and see what Fromsoft will cook up next.
    - Q: Why do you call it the Longspear and not Long Spear lmao
    - A: Longspears are a thing! And “Lothric Knight Long Spear” just looks wrong man, it totally violates the rules of adjective order. It’s DOSA-SCOMP, not DOOSA-SCMP! (Three people understood that and even fewer cared.)

If you liked it, feel free to share this video with anyone who cares - with a small channel like mine, I really can’t depend on the YT algorithm to help me out. 😅
And if you want more, here is the “Longspear Bible”. In it, you can find the Poise Calculator I wrote for easier buildmaking, all my poise/hyperarmor testing data, and a list of combos/pseudocombos. Enjoy!

Well, you made possible the impossible: made me watch a 40 minutes video of Dark Souls 3, a game that I haven’t touched in 4 years (basically) and I have all the intention to keep it that way. I have too many hours on it, and I can’t stomach the PvP again.
    BUT.
It seems that are plenty of things I didn’t try or even know yet, which is the sign of two things: From Software knows its stuff and that you are a great player/creator. And WHAT A GREAT EDITING, man. Never in the way, always entertaining, always bits and effects of good taste. Very well done. This kind of video took ages to make, I know that for sure.
Also, that fucking RARE Death Grips intro? Jesus Christ.

Years ago I watched a Bloodborne montage from a guy I’ve never heard of before, and it was one of the best things I had watched on UA-cam in years. Later I found out that person made more videos for the other Souls games, and now I look forward to every excellent Elden Ring video they drop - because it’s always the best thing currently going on in the ER PvP scene.
Of course that person is you Azael. So, to hear that you enjoyed my video means so much to me. Thanks for all the kind words, seriously. Even if you don’t plan to return to Lothric, to know I was able to educate and entertain one of the greats is all I need.
      Cheers homie!

This is essentially a dangitjm video. Might as well be called "The underrated LKLS".

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity  Місяць тому +11

I appreciate the flattering comparison! I do have a lot of thoughts about this comment. Humor me if you’d like, otherwise feel free to ignore my blathering. 😊
I do love and respect JM’s work and they really paved the way for a whole genre of content. But for that same reason, I do try and distinguish my style from theirs in a number of ways (in my more data driven approach, my writing, and my music and edits) because I prefer that my videos stand on their own. The Underrated Series is kinda the elephant in the room for anyone making PvP weapon analysis content for Souls games, and it takes time and energy and creativity to stand out and avoid JM’s shadow. I put a lot of that effort into my own style and I hope it speaks for itself - and as much as I like JM’s work, I don’t consider myself derivative of them, and I don’t see my videos as an offshoot of their work.
As an example of something JM does that I do not: I specifically avoid discussions of patch history, PvE/buildmaking, or basic “Googleable” info (like how to obtain each weapon), and tailor my discussion specifically on mechanics and approach. In other words, JM’s vids are just as much about the “what”, “when”, and “how” as much as the “why”. Meanwhile I am very very much about the “why” specifically - why mechanics work the way they do, and why that matters for the weapon at hand.
Furthermore, my approach is specifically targeted at intermediate players, folks already familiar with somewhat advanced concepts and with PvP mechanics, while JM’s approach makes the Underrated series more beginner friendly. I see so much value in their approach, but I have slightly different goals - and I wouldn’t want to tread on tilled soil.
All that to say, I appreciate your kindness and I’m really glad you enjoyed the vid! And please don’t take this as me chastising you - I just have a very chatty brain and this made me think about some deeper questions about my work on this website. And when my brain thinks something, my hands have to write something. It’s the content creator’s curse. 😅

After I've been burnt out of Elden Ring PVP, I've been watching old videos of iamamish, saint riot and dangitjm on DS3 PVP, which I've never participated in. I was kind of surprised when this video came up on my home page because of when it came out (youtube was keen on what I was watching I guess) but I'm glad this video was recommended to me. I'll finally give DS3 PVP a try. Thanks for making this video, I bet it took a long time to make.

I can so not believe what I'm learning that I had to stop the video to comment. I have like a gazillion hours in DS3 pvp, how are some of these news to me? I'm a simple str guy who loves his R1+R1 into R2+R2 pseudo Partizan combo but LKL, which I always overlooked, apparently has some great potential. It was only after I stopped playing DS3 that I became a Leo Ring enthusiast though, so I forgive myself lest Ornstein does not.

You have this very nice ability to not only breakdown every dusty, cobweb filled nook and cranny of a weapon or setup and its potential, but also show what makes it fun (THAT R2 TRACKING X.X ). I gotta say Fel, I really appreciate and respect you decided to finish this video despite life getting in the way for a while. Believe me, I understand the circumstance lol.
It goes without saying, but you did a great video showcasing this spear. Personally, I dabbled with the LKLS a couple of times and I enjoyed it a lot back in the day but couldnt really understand why I did outside the R2. The video not only explained why I did, but also taught additional info (like that 1H Hitbox difference/additional combos like GEEZ). Interesting that the Charged R2 on the LKLS loses the perfect tracking just like the BKG's Charged R2. That was a property I assumed was exclusive to BKG but I was mistaken! This video is the best counterpoint to the poise antenna notion.
On another note, I missed this type of content/analysis from you and the landscape on YT. I know people say that rose tinted glasses elevate feelings, but Elden Ring does not have this type of intricacy in combat. I could say a whole dialogue, but I'd break the character limit on here so I'll digress.
I hope to see another form of analysis/commentary from you in the future. You're very skilled in commentary/video making (You wont convince me otherwise!). I hope life treats you well and that it lets up to allow you more free time. Until next time Fel!

Absolutely worth the wait, it’s already everything I wanted and more. Beautiful, Poetic Cinema. For Action Role Playing Game Dark Souls 3.
Oh my god you actually did the SP comparisons visually, that’s so cool - no one actually does that in videos, they usually just refer to the Reddit thread of dubious accuracy.
I never considered the interpolation on the hitboxes catching multiple opponents by sweeping the R2 hitbox - that’s kind of insane.
    SURPRISE COLUMBO
The video is so good I completely forgot to start taking notes for the entire first 10 minutes.
That added poise damage of the pike class breaking any potential hyperarmor out of the close range R1 is extra useful, though I don’t think any hyperarmor in the game would even come out fast enough to contest it - so they really do have to roll.
Surprise Bisexual Siegward, we love to see it.
That running attack IS Frame 1 isn’t it. Wow that’s fucked up. Except somehow.. It isn’t. Most balanced frame 1 attack I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The multihits not locking is something I’m intimately familiar with, unfortunately, but FRAME 1.
These charts and diagrams are perfect for visualizing how to manage threat zones, spacing, conditioning, the works. Lovely Cinematic Aspect Ratio Shift for the crit fishing montage.
THE BLOCKCHAIN There are like 3 layers to this joke. The Sekiro.
You’re braver than I trying to make a caster with this thing.
OMG I make a surprise appearance! I remembered that appearance but I forgot about the stream entirely.
This was just so perfect, it’s your best work, and you should be proud of it. I’m so glad to finally see it, and it was a treat the entire way through. All killer no filler. I am already preparing to go out and (ab)use this knowledge. It’s an honor to be your friend even all this time later. Perhaps we shall see each other again in Lothric.

Prynne you’ve broken the YT meta once again with your lovely play-by-play comments, this was lovely to read. Really glad the jokes landed with you (the blockchain one especially lol) and the info translated well enough to the screen. I was a bit worried my figures wouldn’t come across clearly, but nothing gets past you!
And I knew the moment we had those fun coinvasions in Demon Ruins that I had found the perfect outro. You’ve been a friend and supporter for ages now, and still one of the few Pick and Poker connoisseurs representing out there - to know that you’re interested in trying this weapon out too only proves that we’re on the same wavelength yet again.
Cheers to DS3 and to a future of weird, wonky PvP. Thanks as always Prynne ❤

Yooo jager what’s up, I was just watching your videos. Thanks so much for the kind words.
I started this video in early 2021, but by summer my IRL workload got too intense so I had to step away from the vid. By the time ER came out the vid was like halfway done, then obv I took a long hiatus from it to play and make vids about ER. Finally in mid 2023 I came back and started tinkering with the vid again, and really focused on it in 2024.
So all told about a 1+ years of tinkering and about 6-8 months of super dedicated work. Which is way more than it should’ve been! But the longer I work on something, the more perfectionist I get about it. It’s a bit of a problem I have as a creator 😅
Glad to hear this hit the right notes with a fellow Greatlance and LKLS enjoyer. If you ever do come back to Lothric, they’ll be waiting for you!

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity  Місяць тому +1

@@iamamish I’ll have to get back to you on that first question, I’ve put my best men on it.
As for the testing, it was done on PS5 at 60 FPS. Worth noting, however, that some weapons seem to be a lot harder to infinitely stunlock - notably weapons with a diagonal block (SS, CS, hammers, etc) get pushed far back on hit, limiting the stun to only three hits before they’re out of range. Also, greatswords seem to be able to attack out of blockstun just fast enough to break out of the infinite stunlock if your staggered R1 timing isn’t perfect. And because staggered R1s aren’t a queued input, your timing really does have to be fully manual. These are all factors that make the infinite blockstun trick situational by nature.
That said, the timing for stunlocks is wayyy more generous for ultras and polearm weapons, which seem to experience the longest blockstun of the bunch.

Aquamarine and LKLS are one of those weapons that are the best-underrated metas in DS3. I realized in time that these weapons are very entertaining to use and sit around the A tier weapons. I hate most players using RKSS and PKCS all the damn time. I wished more weapons were like these, having pros and cons. I see LKLS more like a defensive weapon and using it offensively can be quite complicated compared to RKS.
By the way this video feels like I am watching Dangitjm. Amazing video!

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity  Місяць тому +1

Yeah LKLS def fits in the A-tier as a godlike defensive weapon - that said, its offense is also a bit better than most people give it credit for. It just requires more risk-taking and smart play, particularly with max range R2 pokes, good use of Charge for predictive trades and gap-closing, and the running R1 to open people up and set up your combos. That frame 1 option alone can totally change the pace of a fight, particularly against reactive folks who want to play passive as a counter to the LKLS’ defensive toolset.
Add on the interplay between the long range R2 and the up-close R1 nuke, and it becomes clear that the LKLS ability to push opponents and generate offensive momentum is truly in the player’s hands. The more you practice, the more work this moveset will do for you - perhaps moreso than almost any other weapon. And that’s just so cool to me.
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed!

I recently replayed dark souls 3. I never really got into the PVP of these games until this last year, and I haven't played DS3 since 2020 (and not frequently since around the time the ringed city was still big).
I got a LKLS drop on one of my first knight kills and immediately on testing it out and seeing the tracking and timing on its R2, I was thinking "okay so this must be an incredible PVP weapon right?". I was baffled by the tracking and range. But I didn't look into the PvP meta at all to follow up that thought, I just assumed it must be true.
Now I get this video recommended in my feed, and I get to experience the "wait really?" moment of learning it's not popular in PvP, while also feeling validated by someone explaining why "well actually" it is a PvP monster for many of the same reasons I'd assumed initiallty.

The production value on this video, my goodness! To be frank, how dare you?
I’m not going to be playing DS3 PvP with any level of seriousness ever again, but I do enjoy these exposé videos on underrepresented weapons, like Nino’s on the Executioner Greatsword, and now this one.
I saw your Pick & Poker video a while back, which more than earned my sub, but this is a whole new ballpark, in my opinion.
The editing, the graphics, and the quality are all a step up.
LKLS is an R2 weapon in an R1 game, ha!
I do believe that R1s are genuinely the optimal strategy in duels. Why combo your opponent to death with unique ideas when you can just R1-R1 whiff-punish them three or four times? Or even just pressure them with PKCS if you’re Bdubs or Assassin? But this is far more interesting, and it looks like such a blast. I wish I still had the spark, or at least enough enthusiasm to try the Long Spear.
Angeluso has a fantastic video on escaping what are considered true combos with unorthodox actions, such as weapon arts like perseverance or parries: Gundyr’s R1-WA and even some Splitleaf combos are technically escapable, though some are unpunishable. Pretty interesting and worth a watch.
Ah, alright, then. You know of Angeluso, so you’ve most certainly seen it.
I wish there was more research of this caliber when I actually enjoyed DS3, before all the nonsense (looking at you, estus cancel, unscaled phantoms, and cheaters, and the many facets and permutations of the bow glitch.)
I’m glad the algorithm does seem to be pushing this; it has more views than you have subscribers, which is pretty uncommon, especially for such a long and in-depth weapon review.

    • @Felicificity
      @Felicificity  Місяць тому +1

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts, and I’m glad the video has even surpassed my previously best known work. I was worried it would be a shakier sophomore effort, but it seems to have resonated with people! 😁
To your question, standing at midrange and only using safe R1-R1 combos is honestly only optimal in duels imo. When healing, terrain, PvE, phantom/invader backup, and the opportunity to run all present themselves (ie. elements inherent to invasions), there are a lot more situations where doing only the safest thing is not optimal for either you or your opponent (as I’m sure you know well). It is pretty cool! It’s a huge boon to the invasions format.
One example is the running R1 - sure it may be unsafe in some circumstances, but having an unpredictable Frame 1 move with huge forward momentum and frame advantage on hit is a massive boon vs reactive/passive players. It’s an option that forces predictive plays from your opponent (whether that’s predictive rolling, blocking and strafing, etc) and having that in the back pocket helps corral your opponent into a specific course of action.
On top of all that, you have other highly important tools in your arsenal that answer key questions for invasions specifically. What do I do when people try to flank me? Well you can sweep your R2, you can lock on and let the tracking punish someone strafing or trying to BS you, you can target a single opponent with a close range R1 and use the massive hitstun as an opportunity to escape the bad situation, or even Hail Mary poisetank with Charge and delete a phantom while the host swings at you and fails to break your hyperarmor. And all these options can be combined to bait specific options from your opponents that can in turn be punished with big burst damage, which is what will win most invasions at the end of the day.
This is probably already obvious, but just thought I’d walk through my thought process on the idea of optimal plays. LKLS has a wide breadth of options and many of them are still quite useful even against tryhard opponents, which I think is super cool. Just the other day I invaded some dude canceling and glitching and BS fishing in the Woods, and my R2 tracking, offstoc support, and 2H R1/R2/WA combos and mixups completely frustrated his every approach. Even when he ran to heal I still often caught him off guard with the unpredictable running attack. Eventually I drained him of his Estus and he took off his clothes and swapped to Murky so he could quickstep to the boss fog. It was adorable.
All that said I totally understand not wanting to come back to DS3 - I’ll hold down the fort in your absence and hope we get a game in the future that scratches a similar itch.
Thanks so much for your in-depth and thought provoking comment, and glad you enjoyed!

Glad to see this. I've been eyeing this spear for a while looks wise but never got around to it for the longest time because I have been so deep in the str sauce.
That said I have a dex build now so this is if nothing else accessable for experimenting without making a whole new or respeced build.

I like to run great spear with frost weapon and a fire infused offhand rapier. Resetting the frost, then procking it again with the weapon art is so much fun.

That sounds really fun! On my frost focused Str builds I also like to keep an offhand Ringed Knight Sword for a similar reason - it still scales partly with Str, but it also includes a small bit of fire damage for frost resets. It’s quite potent, and I think it would also suit a frost-buffed Lance or LKLS. Especially on a quality build
