    Laserdisc isn’t digital. It’s an analog optical format. They did encode digital audio on later discs during the later years.
    It also didn’t “kind of” precede DVD, it came out in the late 70’s and was available LONG before.

    We had RCA CED movies when I was a kid in the ‘80s, but one major problem was that they would get dusty and would skip horribly and they would skip chapters out of nowhere.

      Makes sense that the product failed if CED had those issues back then. Yikes 😱

      Thanks. I used to collect for 8mm film. You know those Super 8mm Castlefilms, I had alot of the Universal Classic Monsters on that 8mm film which is dope. Great artwork, small and compact boxes. It's fun threading the film through the projector too lol@@kylesmoviecollection

    I believe the laser disk didn’t die until the 90s 92 or 94 or something like that. I love my laser disk collection. The quality is just a slightly better than VHS or Beta but the CED is way way beneath the quality level. Lol.

      I worked at Tower Records just after college (1998-2000, during the transition to DVD), and we still had a laserdisc section. The format held on in Japan even longer.

    Good video, but Laserdisc wasn’t a Digital format; it was Analog video like Vhs was but was higher quality. I mainly got into collecting the format because of some of the Anime titles that were released on it. But I’ve got a cool Boxset of The Rocky Horror Picture Show that has the soundtrack and a Book written by Sal Piro about the films cult status. Another highlight of my collection is The first season of HBO’s Spawn; which has all the episodes compiled into a Movie. Nothing really that you can’t get on Dvd, but it has a cool gatefold with some awesome artwork in it which is why I got it. Oh, and I have the Criterion Edition of Akira which is pretty rare

    • @mymangodfrey
      @mymangodfrey 9 місяців тому

      Came to say this. Later players and discs offered digital audio, but the video was always analog. Very different technology from DVD.
      Also, LD (originally called Discovision) actually predated (and nearly outlasted!) videotapes.
      PS: I enjoyed the video-looking forward to your others. Can’t beat those gatefold covers and the retro charm of those shiny, absurdly large, heavy, inconvenient discs. (My laserdisc players struggle to get them spinning, but once the discs are spinning, they still play and usually look good as new.)
