TMNT (1990) is iconic, I saw it twice at the Cinema in '90. The Terminator, Die hard, Outland, ALIENS ...All Great Movies to own on Laserdisc. Awesome update!😀👍
Anyone remember the Wing Commander movie from 1999? My buddy hasthat on laser disc, its an okay movie, but I remember its claim to fame was that it Episode 1 The Phantom Menace Trailer was showing with it and people would just pay to see Wing Commander and then once the Trailer was shown would leave the theatre. Maybe you could do a Retrospective of that Oliver? Just a suggestion though, keep making great and entertaining videos man.
I had to do a quick check on Wing Commander, it was announced for LaserDisc but cancelled. So you're probably thinking of another movie your friend had. Wing Commander would've been an early DVD release around that time.
Lol, Wing Commander. There's still the odd movie that was on Laser Disc and VHS that's still not out on DVD or Bluray, I remember seeing Beastmaster 2 and 3 on Laser Disc?
Love these little collection updates 👍 It'd be awesome if somewhere in the near future you'd be able to include small snippets of captured footage to show the quality per movie 😊
Actually the original American Tail came out in '86, the sequel came out in the early 90's, I don't know when, but I'll just say '91-'92.@@OliverHarper
I've had Fifth Element for months and never checked it! Checked it after watching this...luckily I'm rot free, lol. Pretty crisp transfer actually. Ps, jealous of tmnt LD, that's been on my wants list for a while.
Just watched your blade runner video where you talked about what you thought the sequel might be like. Please do a review of it! Would love to see that!
Please, please, please do a retrospective on An American Tale, and its very underappreciated sequel! If, or whenever you do, please see if you can find out why the differences in voices and the addition of sound effect, lines, and music that appear and/or don't appear between the VHS release, and the DVD and Blu Ray release. For example, the mice that bully Fieval during the tragic orphanage scene in the rain say different lines and have different voices in the VHS print, and for years, that is what I was familiar with while growing up. There's even a line or two that you don't hear in the VHS print and a different music cue when Fieval drops into the gramophone looking for Papa, though the DVD and Blu Ray play Horner's music. I still cry when I watch this movie, and Horner's heart-wrenching score can break me up on its own as well.
Was on Holiday in LA a few weeks back and popped into the Amoeba store in Hollywood They had a laserdisc section next to their blu ray section. Had quite a few in its section but didn’t go through the titles there.
Those old PCM audio tracks really stood the test of time, though it took many years and formats to finally top the audio of LaserDisc I would have to say Dolby Atmos has finally made me give up on watching alot of my LaserDisc movies minus a couple of rarities, but until Dolby Atmos they were the king of audio for sure.
I own that exact same Ninja Turtles laserdisc. I got it back in 2018 for $10 off a seller from LDDB, not including shipping. Nowadays it goes for somewhere between $50-$100. I also own the original pressing of Die Hard with the original 2-channel Dolby stereo track. It’s a terrific sounding disc.
man, i used to love this channel. back when he did retrospectives all the time for 70s, 80s, and 90s films it was one of my favorite channels on yt. i'd watch those videos multiple times. now its mostly shovelware, low-effort garbage and literal ads. 🤷♂
I did a retrospective two weeks ago on Invaders from Mars, but I have spent the last 3 months editing a feature film so didn't get much time to dedicate to UA-cam.
Hi! I have gotten into laserdisc collecting over the course of this year, and I love seeing these updates from you. I actually have that same edition of The Terminator, and yeah, hearing that old school mix was nice. Also got the later Hunt For Red October that you mentioned but have not watched it yet. I actually found the Aliens Special Edition at a store around where I live, and it does look good. Thank you for putting these videos out. Gives me a list of ones to look for!
Some excellent pickups there Oliver 👍 I just realised I haven’t picked up any titles on the format in almost a year 🤔 I think that’s because I do have the majority of the titles I wanted. Who knows I might go on a binge buy next year for all I know lol Great video as always and I’m always interested with you’re pickups and recommendations for Laserdisc 👌
Good call with JP and Aliens. I have the US Ac3 of Aliens. The sleeve is beautiful. I also got the Japanese Ac3 of Alien 3 last year. Cost me 70 quid. No regrets though.
Really enjoyed your update! I'd love to watch that terminator laserdisc. The blue tinted picture on the terminator dvd & blu ray look like absolute dog crap.
@@andyrycroft5752 I hate the tinkering they do with the pictures of older movies. George Lucas adding a blue tint to the Orginal Trilogy was the first time I noticed it. Looks like crap run over twice
@@OliverHarperBrilliant. I was curious as I am a big fan of your content (for years now) and pretty much love all the movies you review/retrospectively review. Would you say you watch a laserdisc over a 4K release. For example - Aliens is rumoured for this year, will you ever go back to the laserdisc if the transfer is immaculate (hopefully not another T2 transfer). Thanks for your reply, pal!
@@ColonelSternlove I watch 4K blu-ray's more often than LaserDisc but sometimes you fancy watching an older movie on the LD format as it has that unique video look and the sound is always great on LD, it doesn't really suffer from compression that plagued their DVD counterparts and most often the sound mixes on Laser are presented in their original presentation and haven't been remixed and had the dynamic range reduced. I've been into LD since the late 90s so its certainly nostalgic for me, but for newcomers they probably think im a bit mad! lol But yeah im definitely looking forward to see ALIENS in 4K. I imagine Mr Cameron will fiddle with the picture again!

The first TMNT movie is still the best one after all these years
A shame it isn't on 4k. At least not yet
@@M3TR01DFANBOY hopefully they do a good restoration
Captain Obvious
I'd still like a decent release of secret of the ooze
That's true!
What I love about laser disc are all the production photos on the sleeve. That and the vintage audio mixes

Do certain labels have more disc rot issued or is it more about how the discs have been stored ?
Please do another updated 4K UHD collection video at some point.
Another lovely laserdisc video!
You know how much I adore American Tail too. A true classic and some superb animation.

A Hunt for Red October retrospective would be great 😊
You've got a nice collection, Oliver. I've got Commando. Conan the Barbarian and Aliens on DVD.
Hey bud, can you do a clue retrospective?
LaserrDisc is the best name for a format ever.
I love a good LD update video
Glad you slated the THX Die Hard - I agree it's got awful PQ - I suspect it's a case of overuse of noise reduction that is the main culprit
ah im not the only one then who doesn't like its transfer!
Hi Oliver you got the new robocop rogue city game or doing a review on it cheers
Hi there im playing the game at the moment and should have a review ready later in the week!
@OliverHarper OK gr8 love it just completed it hope u like it to. Look forward to your review & thanks for replying

That THX Terminator is imo one of the definitive ways of watching the movie, get that great mono track and superb image quality.
All of my favourite movies. Nice.
Hopefully you'll do The Land Before Time (1988) sometime soon on your Retrospective Review, Oliver
Perhaps a Laser Disc Book for collectors might be good one day? (Nes Manga)
I need to watch Outland. Hunt for red October is pretty good.
We need a T2 video games retrospective that T1 video is in my top 10 favourite UA-cam videos this year
Yeah I will get round to it dude!

Here you go! ua-cam.com/video/wDk_Q9ONJug/v-deo.htmlsi=7mI3L6_wsU1gFmXp
Well at least this cover of TMNT is better than those more recent one face covers that for God knows what all have the Turtles 3 designs
I miss James Horner and two back to back to start there
380 yen, $3.80? That’s super cheap!
Bloody bargain!
That sax music is a little distracting. Sounds like your roommate Miles Davis practicing in the other room
I do believe that tmnt is open matte. Ofcourse not the original creative intent. So maybe you're not losing any picture but maybe gaining too much.
yeah you're probably right about the open matte.
Do you watch these discs or are they just collectibles?
Yep

Somebody should tell him about the existence of DVDs and Blurays which made laserdiscs obsolete.
Those are digital formats though

Why does Commando have the Weyland symbol?
Terminator was made in 1984 released in Oct 1984
I’m referring to the release of the LD, pretty obvious.
