Love an RnineT me, lovely premium feel and love those clocks - when I was in the retro market I just didn’t fancy another boxer engine though (especially the “old” one)…for me the Speed Twin pips it but then I like lazy riding and love the idea of owning Triumphs. Great video again Choppsy - you’re really rather good at this!
I'm with Mr. Flyer holding it down for us sorta young guys who love bikes with lots of grunt and don't have all the time in the world for track days (*cough* kids). I would appreciate it if Ser Chopsie would test out what I ride the R1250R and see what kind of abuse it can take 😆
Great way to describe this bike as 75% playtime and 25% ride enjoyment, find that exact same ratio when riding my R1250R and at some point I've even asked myself why not just go the extra 25% into a speed triple. especially coming from sport bikes and even more especially on the rare occasion I get dusted by a supernaked 😆
@@pbofan me: when buying my first BMW (a 900 gs) telling the salesman not to bother showing me the fancy dash and whiz wheel wondering why they can't offer analog clocks on a dual sport Also me: when trading it for the R1250R don't bother showing me the nine-t even if it had cruise because I can't live without the amazing dash and whiz wheel 😆
Let's say it, anyone with an eye for design loves the R9T range. It feels like a special bike to ride, and although I enjoyed my Gen 1 Speed Twin it kind of gets lost in the Triumph range with Streets and other Bonnevilles. The R9T seems unique and I love the running characteristics of the Boxer. A keeper!
what kind of riding do you do with these bikes? How long of a ride? I ride a honda monkey and I love doing long rides (200+ miles) but I cannot go faster than 60 mph so that's the limiting factor. But the monkey is super comfortable for all day rides. I wonder if i should get a bigger bike but the weight is intimidating. the monkey is only 220 lbs.
@@edwardchoe1495 Do not worry about the weight. Its a bit of an issue at crawling speeds but the weight disappears once you get moving. The gyroscopic principle helps to keep your bike upright, so the faster you go the lighter it will feel. Its possible to corner just as good on heavy bikes, and maneuvering through traffic will be a breeze if you get a short wheelbase streetfighter.
Concur. The base model has RWU forks, gaitors and is the so called "blank canvas". Its also 2 - 3 grand Sterling cheaper, and if i was buying new, the one i'd go for. Also like the retro GS version.
@@michaelhayward7572 I owned a “Bumble Bee” R100GS from 1992 to 2011. Wish I hadn’t sold it! The 40th Edition Urban GS is tempting….but with black (not yellow) hand guards. Trying to recapture those happy memories 👍
To be fair that's down to BMW calling the base version the Pure. Weird because it's essentially the original right way up fork version but heyho Beemer wouldn't be Beemer without some quirkiness.
I have the 2021 Scrambler. My first bike ever. I've tested a few other bikes practicing, Honda, Yamaha etc, street bikes. I must say that I love the NineT. Good ride height, enough space for feet when shifting, awesome sound, and above all, the responsiveness through the revs. Not very nice to ride on the highway though since it doesn't have covers. I often get questions and comments about it. My first bike and I hope I will get to give it to my son when he's old enough.
The 75/25 assessment makes perfect sense. When the bike is too fast you’ve got to zone in more as opposed to just taking your time to relax and enjoy it. Both types of rides are enjoyable ofcourse but definitely different
I test drove this R NineT five years ago or so, I thought it was a rowdy, hoot to ride and like TMF mentioned I love that it had\has dual clocks. Also, the R NineT has to be the most muscular, brutish looking bikes made, I luv it.
My dream machine. Much prefer those clocks over the naff, sparkly, OTT Speed Twin version. That's actually important, given they're in your line of sight all the time.
I agree, I've gone the other way, from a 2019 Speedie to 2022 RNineT. I ride larger distances and the chain maintenance is tricky as I live in an apartment building.
Great review. You actually show details of the bike like the adjustable shocks and the USB. Love seeing close up details. Some of us use these videos to decide which bike to buy and tiny details are very nice to know! Very few others take the time to do that. Very helpful and excellent job. Thanks!
I rode one of these a couple of years ago and loved it. My bike is a K1300S and it does psychotic very well. It might take a bit to get the lower horse power into my head but as I'm getting older now, it's sounding like a good proposition.
had one of these as a rental on holiday in Italy years ago, fell in love with that boxer motor! I've a 1250gs now, still in love, amazing engine. Would love an R Nine T one day, especially now that they chucked cruise control on there. Great mixture of classic and modern, kudos LCR and BMW
Lovely review! Please don't complain about the engine being air cooled, that's a GOOD thing! BMW has nailed the design on this bike, absolutely timeless, and with many possibilities for customization.
I have a 2017 and everything you said was spot on, it's a combination of a retro and a naked bike. There is a lot of aftermarket and customization you can do on the R9T range. The R9T Pure would go up against the Speed Twin the R9T classic/roadster would go against the Thruxton although the Thruxton RS is probably a bit sportier.
Not sure if anyone mentions it in the comments but the extra cost spoked wheels are designed for tubeless tyres. The spoke anchors are external rather than normal spokes where they go into the rim. The standard wheels have tubes inside.
@@e.l.9589 I would have to say the handling and also like the higher profile of the Speed Twin. The R9T sits lower. Sound from the stock dual pipes as well.
The handling on my 2020 Speed twin was abysmal due to the poor quality of the suspension...... A set of YSS shock absorbers and decent progressive fork springs with pre load adjusters transformed the bike. Shouldn't have to do that on a new 12k bike..... The newer Speed Twin with the usd forks are better,I imagine, but don't look as good,or suit the bike,in my opinion.
Must admit, I prefer the RnineT, to the Speed Twin...........but i'm slightly biased, as I own a R1200R. From what i've found, any factory fitted "Akra" cans, are restricted to normal emissions and noise levels. My advice, buy one with "standard" cans, fit an aftermarket can. Usually it adds about £800 to £1000 to the purchase price for a fitted Akra, after market will cost similar, and you can remove the baffle on after market ones, not usually possible on factory fitted! Great video, as always Chops, keep up the good work.
The bit about bike vs ride. It makes a lot of sense actually, especially when we get older and are a bit tired from the speed but still love the experience… if you get what I mean :)
Wow it makes perfect sense what you mentioned about the enjoyment percentages between bike and ride, I am debating between a Bonneville or a Nine T, the fact that the Nine T wants to go fast, is probably a showstopper for me. Probably the most useful review for me, spot on with what I wanted to know about the bike.
Stunning bike these are, was soooooo close to getting one around a year ago. And, they hold their value really well. Build quality is exceptional (even for bmw) and this is reflected in the pricing. As always, top review chops. 👍👍
BeMoto didn’t want to insure my R9T even I’m already a customer the reason because I don’t have a garage!!! Where the bike is parked is much safer than a garage computer said NO 😤 Sorry not the place to complain but as it’s one of your sponsors just putting it there. The bike is an absolute dream to ride 😎😍
Actually, I'm not a fan of beMoto, either. They were the only insurance company to decline insuring my 1 year old Ducati - as I only had 1 years NCD (having come back to bikes after a 40 year break)and I didn't have 2 years NCD they 'required' - yet I already had an older BMW insured with them! Both bikes securely garaged. They also sent a threatening letter requesting proof of the previous 1 year NCD for the BMW.....despite getting an email from somebody else at beMoto acknowledging receipt of it! Unbelievable, and I gave them hell as a result, receiving a grudging apology in return. Yeah, naw.......I think they spend too much sponsoring some channels - it was 44 teeth led me to originally insure with them - and their actual coverage and service is decidedly so so. As for the R9T.....yeah, naw.....styling is meh, and I think Ducati finish and detail their bikes better, now. To give just one example, the much vaunted BMW S1000RR, killer bike to ride, but lacklustre, cheapo plastic and stickers everywhere. The older BMW's are better made and finished.
Have owned both..... Triumph for looks and image. BM for quality and reliability. Have a Z900rs on it's way,so should be interesting to compare the 3. As mentioned here, very difficult to ride the BM at sensible speeds as it performed so well..... which is why I sold it. Had the feeling that my licence wouldn't have lasted, too long. Fantastic, and fun motorcycle.
Love my 2019 Urban GS R9T, peppy, quirky, goes like a bat out of hell, you can even tour on it- bags of character, plus it makes me smile everytime i see it sat in my garage. Apparently the new '21 model is slightly less engaging, according to other youtubers
I think this bike is a good all-rounder. You can use it as a commuter. You can use it for weekend fun. You can race it. You could go touring on it. I think BMW left out the fuel gauge because they want to convey it is a retro bike.
Imagine Chopsy if your partner said "I am only allowing you to have one bike and no more". This bike would be the perfect solution, as you get all these different riding capacities in one bike. The Great Around bike has been found in the R Nine T. And the lack of fuel gauge wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. You would just out of habit, make sure you automatically refuel everyday. And you would do this even more more on longer trips. So ultimately the lack of fuel gauge shouldn't be an issue. Remember, Chopsy there are thousands of R Nine T owners around the world, that are riding their bikes and managing to do it, without a fuel gauge.
Not ridden the Speed Twin but I have ridden the R9T, and I loved it. Great review. I'm going to have to ride the Speed Twin to see if I concur now but I do believe you've given a pretty accurate judgment. The R9T may be more expensive but you are getting a few things more. That boxer though is such an easy going motor you can ride it just as lazily to enjoy the views as any bike I've ever ridden so not sure i could agree there. One thing you don't touch on though is these bike are not much good at anything other than offering a stylish Sunday ride out. Really just a second bike for enjoying the ride when you're in the mood.
I'm same age height and weight and have a r nine t, I dropped the pegs 1 inch and raised the bars 1 inch and the bike fits me now. You hit nail on the head about customizing they are the perfect bike for customising, close to Harley's. Specialist customizer with kits (pier city customs are a supplier I have used many times)
I had exactly the same bike, but new back in the end of 2017. Akrapovic pipes were standard then, no cruise available, but went for the heated grips. Bought a Sargent seat which transformed the comfort (did not look much different from standard, but oh was it better !!). Only other changes were a dart flyscreen and a passenger grab rail from Unit Garage which blended in well. Loved the turn-in on the bike as it has a smaller front wheel than the rest of the range (17 inch) - the urban had a larger front wheel and the scrambler larger still). It has soooo much torque, listening to you ride it brings it all back 🙂. For the models back then, the standard R9T was actually the top of the range bike (bit weird, but that is BMW for you). It was a very special bike to own and ride. Only sold it as I was addicted to changing bikes every year or two for a while !! Thanks for the vid !
Thanks for the honest review. Just a little confused on a couple of points. 1. I mentioned the no fuel gauge to the BMW Motorrad sales guy. His comment "Yes it has, the fuel light comes on then you have 60-80km to fill up? 2. Size wise I am 5'7" 30" in seam, fits me nicely? When I sat on the F750GS it felt like a much larger bike & top heavy. I've not sat on the Speed Twin, Seat height 809mm v R nineT seat height 805mm? 3. Wet weight nothing in it really Speed Twin 216kg v R nineT 221Kg + weight would be lower down on the BM I guess. Both bikes are special and we are so lucky to have manufactures producing such awesome machines.
I really like the R nine T, a cracking looking bike and a great review of it, John. It’s very interesting how you thought the Speed Twin was easier to just cruise about on, while the nine T wanted to push on - a good point and worth considering. Looking forward to seeing the Hyper vid 👍 Andy🏴
I had the original R90 in the day and also the Bonne in the 70's. I thought the R90 had the edge then and still think so now. mind you, I still own both BMW twins and British twins and enjoy them both for how they make me feel. I now own other bikes to go fast on though :)
Another great review Chops! I owned a 2015 R9T very similar to this one. Never really gell'd with that bike. That side to side motion was "unusual" and also the transmission and the way it shifted with the shaft drive was "unusual" too. Never could get used to those two things. It was a beautiful bike though and I got a lot of comments on it. I still think the Speed Twin is the better looking bike though, and I'm really leaning towards getting one of those.... time to do some bike shopping!
Got mine about a year ago. It’s a keeper for sure. No maintenance shaft drive is ferah to havle. I probably will keep it till I die. It can be the Swiss Army knife of bikes with simple mods (the scrambler model). You can literally turn it into a bare bones gs for touring and have the best looking urban bike when you simply remove the touring mods. All it takes is 30 minutes to put on and remove the touring mods(wind screen, handlebar riser, peg adjustments) You may want to upgrade the seat as well. I use the unit garage gel seat which both looks better and is much more comfortable.
@00:58 One correction. The version you're testing isn't the base version. It's the premium "classic" model with higher spec suspension, ally tank and USD forks. The others have more budget suspension, steel tank and conventional forks. I've got the now discontinued Racer variant which I've had for 4 years and you wouldn't prize it away from me with a crowbar.
Know what you mean - last year I had the MT09 and I seemed to notice the countryside less on that bike - too busy focusing on the ride itself. I think part of the problem was that the engine was so effortlessly capable that I was always looking to create a bit more drama
In 2020, I drove to a dealership in Cleveland, OH with the intent of purchasing a one year old R Ninet. I loved the look of the bike which is what initially drew my attention, and the price was right. Long story short, I came home with a Speed Twin. After riding both bikes, it wasn't a hard choice. The Triumph felt more purpose driven, and at the same time more suitable for longer rides (much better fuel economy, no need for premium fuel). I think the novelty of the R ninet quickly wears off on most owners as evidenced by so many used ones on the market with extremely low miles.
Two notes: 1. This is not the base version of the R Nine T lineup, that'd be the Pure. This one is actually the better equipped of all the versions in terms of suspension and brakes. 2. This weighs 5kg more than the Speed Twin (221kg vs 216kg), not 10kg like you said. Your conclusion is exactly the same as mine, though: this is better than the Speed Twin is every single department.
Ha....ive just bought one and yes....riding a motorbike non handed coz of cruise control....what a joy....and what a new experience...i think mine might be bit perkier though....a slightly better power to weight ratio..im 10 half the size of you!
I have a 2013 1200R roadster and was thinking of upgrading to a nine t. However on the face of it, I can’t see any real reason to (except for the styling). The 1200R is much more versatile, comes with BMW removable luggage for touring and is more comfortable for my pillion. It has all the performance of the nine t and the riding position is more upright (better for my bad back!). I picked it up for less than £5,000 - I reckon it’d cost me an extra 3 - 4,000 to upgrade and all I’d get would be a nicer styling package!
Hi, I don’t own the r nine t any more, I’m two bikes further on now. However, like most of my sells I regret doing so. The r nine t was a great bike. Great in town and the B road. Loads of grunt at the twist of the throttle on an A road too. Best thing has to be the smell in your garage for a couple of hours after you’ve put it away. That air head motor smells of oil and fuel which you don’t get on modern water cooled engines. Fantastic smell ! Only small gripes, and I do mean small, is there a dead space on the front break where the first 10% of movement does nothing. It’s been mentioned by reviewers before. You ride around it just fine though. The other thing is on earlier models (mine being 2016) the posh looking upside down gold forks weren’t fully adjustable, and the rear shock wasn’t very swanky either. Neither matter for B road blasts or A roads. Not at all ! I think the suspension would only need upgrading if you were doing the odd track day (not sure why you’d choose an r nine t for that though) or if you were some what heavier than the bike was designed for. For the record I’m 12-1/2 stone if that helps put some perspective on it. Great bike ! Shaft drive is super refined too.
I would imagine that if Triumph put equivalent suspension on the Speed Twin it would be as good, if not better. R nine T owners used to complain about it suspension too until BMW sorted it in 2017. Of course it depends what you want from a bike but I reckon the fact the Trumpy makes more torque and does so 1800 rpm lower gives it bigger grin potential.
I'm 5.11 and 17st, I find all the retro Triumph bikes a bit small, except for the 1200 scrams. The 1200 Triumph engine is a peach of a motor, but your right about the handling, when you push on a bit you soon remember that you're on a retro, where as the Bmw you don't, I bought the F900 r I wanted the TFT and all the tec, But the 9T looks the nuts,
Another fine review LCR. Pity you couldn't get the direct back to back with the Speed Twin. Re roll off engine breaking you do get used to it. For me the "old" oil air engine is better then the wc in this type of bike and it sounds better!! 😀
Great video. You should try the rarer R9T Racer. I love mine and is stunning to look at in the garage. The riding position is a little extreme but suits me. Worth a try if you can.
I would definitely go for the 9Nine as it is really unique, engaging, beautiful and full of character. The Triumph is a nice machine but it is still stightly asceptic and doesn't handle as well, especially cornering. The Boxer engine also sounds amazing and is a myth.
Back to the bike: I rented an Urban GS and was absolutely giddy about the strong, exuberant engine coupled with the terrific handling and brilliant brakes! I decided then and there, I must have one... BUT WHICH VERSION? I must have a tachometer, so that's my minimum requirement. Love this bike---Kudos, BMW!
G'day LCR. A very good video and a very good machine but i still like the Speed Twin. It'll do everything the RnineT can at a cheaper cost, its for me.
I bought the exact same bike new in 2018 , I replaced the front forks at 3200 kms due to knocking noises over bumps , it was perfect until I got to just over 7000 kms & got the same problem again so I had enough if it then & got rid of it after having it just for 6 months , I was disappointed because I liked the bike , it didn’t like the backroads here in Ireland , I bought a 2019 s1000r sport after that & never got a problem great all round bike but that’s gone now for a new busa bought last July & loving it
Forget the bhp figures, this bike has massive torque firing you out of corners. Compare the torque this bike makes at 6000 rpm with a 1000rr for example…….😉
And now compare those figures when taking into account final drive ratios and transmissions losses and oops the rr wins in every gear at any speed. Sure this bike is zippy at lower engine speeds, but sportbikes are just geared much shorter so its like being in a lower gear effectively.
Be carefully, it looks like you way to close to bottoming out just by moderate breaking, any bigger bump and you can get yourself in trouble. Love the review ❤
Yes you are absolutely right, I have this bike 2014 model roadster, doesn’t have the cruise control and riding modes. But the rest is all there, the great first class components like Brembo and aluminium fuel tank. This boxer engine is a peach and it needs a bit getting use to to ride it very progressive and fast. But once you get use to the bike, the gearbox and throttle. There’s no better bike in this world. I still plan to build and upgrade my R9T, still not finished. When I bought it always had a plan to get it to a point where it will be perfect. More so then many other bikes one can customise and improve upon. Maybe the only thing I wish it had is that cruise control from that new model, but for the rest it is better to use the 2014 roadster model to build an even better custom ride. Using special and more expensive components then you get from the factory on this new model. The problem would be to upgrade the suspension for example. This bike already has adjustable front suspension which would be a shame to replace. My bike doesn’t, so I plan to upgrade to one of your British high grade manufacturers… Nitron all the way around, front cartridge Set for the forks and rear R1 shock with hydraulic preload settings. That will make it handle even better then this new 2021 model. Straight open SS headers, and these same mufflers only DB out. A nice high flow air filter and a remap by Rexerr tuning. Once I finish it will be an incredibly capable bike. Only the CC I will have to solve by a throttle lock. But that’s ok, it’s only for highway blasting and I do much more A roads with sweeping bends here in Croatia. Great review BTW, I just subscribed to your channel, maybe you can return the favor one day.
Hi, I have to agree with you about the 75% bike / 25% ride. I have owned an r nine t (top spec 🤐) for a few years now and have ridden the thruxton R which is a cut above the speed twin, and I’d agree the r nine t is more incorrigible than even that. The thruxton R or even the Speed twin behave more lazily like the Moto Guzzi Griso I sold. I loved my Griso (with an aftermarket Italian exhaust) but if you washed it, it would misfire (not the first Italian bike I’ve sold for reliability issues !). I’ve digressed. The reason I mention it is that I wanted a reliable bike to replace the Griso with equaled character. I achieved that, but ended up singing to the r nine t’s tune and lavishing it with straight through Akrapovic exhausts, K&N air filter, Power commander V & a rolling road tune. Yet I bought the r nine t to get me back to grass routes and stop chasing horse power. Now I find my self talking myself down…..when I can ! That said, I love the looks and the engine and the fact that it doesn’t pretend to be a full on Retro, it’s just it’s own fully modifiable entreaty.
Do you still own the r nine t? And if so, are you still satisfied? I have found an E 4 at a good price. I'm thinking about buying it. Is it rideable in the city and on winding roads? Can it also be ridden comfortably?
Good review Choppsy, I’ve not ridden the Speed Twin but bought an RnineT Scrambler about three months ago and am totally smitten. That said the stock rear shocker was not great so had a Nitron unit fitted (MCT Stowmarket) and have fitted a Wunderlich thicker seat so comfort levels are great now. Beautiful build quality…..I can see me keeping this bike for a good while,
Note that "BASE" is not the basic one... in effect it is the top of the line. ;)... I think it is called "nineT"... Spoked wheels come from factory by default. the only extras for this is the heated grips and cruise control... ;)
Incorrect regarding the wheels. The standard factory spoked wheels take inner tubes, where as the option 719 wheels on this bike run tubeless.
3 роки тому
@@mansbre you are right... But I didn't mention tubeless. just said that spiked wheels come from factory. All the other nineT Models come with the cast ones. In this case, there are a lot of additional extras more... With bling.
Great review, have the Urban GS for three years. That one does not even have a rev counter! but a good all-round bike, might be in the market for something new shortly..
It’s interesting to compare the R Nine T with the Speed Twin. In fact, I had a speed twin for a while (and I was coming from a SDGT), and I didn’t catch the idea of what was that bike meant for. And now you said it, “it’s a sedated ride” , relaxing, to appreciate the views , that’s what it is for. I simply found it beautiful but ineffective. The R Nine T is a total other game. It can be ridden in a relaxed way but it requires a more aggressive riding, where it functions better. Ironically, I was penalized two times for speeding on the Triumph and none with the BMW 😯?? Maybe because I had the Speed twin first and when I got the R Nine T, I had to behave more careful with the speed…
I dont know why people get worried about no fuel gauge. It's got a great reserve warning system with heaps of k's up yr sleeve. I just got in the habit of parking it in my shed with a full tank.
More expensive than the Triumph but better. My favourite is the Urban G/S. Just a shame it costs around 20,000 GBP in Thailand. Made in Germany so subjected to big import duty, but not the 100 per cent it used to be. Excellent review.
I disagree about Speed Twin not having a sporty nature. It's lighter and flicks trough corners like a beast! I've got the 2019 model and even when it was new there was a huge price gap which makes it possible to get much better suspension than what's on de R Nine T and completely tailored to my weight and riding nature. Handing now is incomparable with it. Being too big for a motorcycle makes the ride uncomfortable with doesn't help with catching the nature of a bike.
I quite like Beemers, especially the Boxer cup replicas, I remember them throbbing around in support races at Moto GP's back in the day, great review Chops. 👍👍👍🇬🇧
Buddy, mega edit as usual, The cinematography, all the different angles and camera views are A+🔝👌🏻 and of course you’re the best in the biz when it comes to actually vlogging, and articulating your thoughts. Are you ever on top of your game right now or what. Now let’s talk about this bike, really enjoyed the thorough review, looks like an incredible machine, it has so much character and charm. Not to mention style 🆒🎬🎥👍🏻
Bought r nine t. I'm 36... he suits me very well... speed twin is for the elderly, and it is smaller, simpler in overall quality, and perception. and I love both this motor and its enthusiasm, and a touch of retro to myself. And also the absence of a chain speaks in his favor. cruise control, heated handles, a beautiful retro dashboard... there is something to pay for but the gearbox could have been softer, and the gears could have been longer
I have a similar age and am thinking of getting one. I've read that it gets quite hot, especially in the city. Have you noticed anything similar and in the summer? Unfortunately I live in the city. And, do you still own it? Experience so far?
I had one for three years and it was a real Jeckyle & Hyge bike. Nice and smooth and slow if you wanted it to be but pull that throttle back and it turns into a quick well handling bike that's plenty fast enough in the real world. When they first came out they were being compared to the triumphs but I personally don't think it's a relevant comparison, other than for a bit of fun.
Maybe it's because I daily a suzuki c50 but the new speed twin turned me into an absolute hooligan. Surprised to hear you say it's less rewarding to ride fast than this. I have got to get a ride on one of these.
New subscriber here. Thanks for the video. I had this dilemma recently. I like the R9T, but when I sat on it I found it caused a lot of discomfort on my inner thighs. I think it’s me, as it does not seem to be an issue that others mention. In the end, I went for a T120. Maybe a Speed Twin one day …
Come on Chopsy, think about it, the engine is in line i.e. the crank is longtudinally mounted. The crank is a heavy, spinning mass which gives rise to the torque reaction when you blip the throttle. Lovely bike which has me teetering on whether or not to own a BMW...
R9T not the base Chopsy, that’s the Pure, funny you found so sporty, Chaseon2Wheels really didn’t get on with it. I tried my mate’s and the non ABS rear brake kept bothering me, def a bike to ride off the front end as you say. Def a modern retro to go up against the Kwak and FTR1200 etc. Now FTR1200 2021 model on proper tyres?
Bought a X-R and saw the sports version with bare Alu tank and had to buy it. Love the triumph but bar position was too uncomfortable on triumph ( yes could have put risers ) major works done by pcc guys, airbox delete , Funnynpbike rear led led, drop the pillion pegs, dna air filter, rapid bike fuelling module, ac schnitzer race bars and alloy wheels ( the difference was amazing) led Denali light - now a keeper ( sold my panigale instead)
Love an RnineT me, lovely premium feel and love those clocks - when I was in the retro market I just didn’t fancy another boxer engine though (especially the “old” one)…for me the Speed Twin pips it but then I like lazy riding and love the idea of owning Triumphs. Great video again Choppsy - you’re really rather good at this!

what kind of riding do you do with these bikes?
Me too. The 1200 engine is the most dependable, says my friend the BMW master mechanic. I’ve had 2 on the GS platform.
I’ve always found it weird how everyone refers to this model as the base R9T variant when it’s actually top of the range. Another great review Chops 👍
100%
@@gerardmontgomery280any suggestions on ninet pure or classic? Buy which? Thanks in advance.
Hi there! I'm looking to buy the same bike but I'm a bit concerned about the hight - I'm 6"2 and I wonder whether it won't be too small?
dear friend I had a dilemma, speed twin or nine but thanks to you I decided for bmw and I am happy...greetings from Spain.
Had an r9t really liked it. But now I have the speed twin first 100 miles on the triumph and I'm impressed, both bikes are really nice to ride.
Nicely done! I recently sold my 2019 R9T and purchased the 2022 Speed Twin and absolutely love it. No going back!
Is it just a different experience you're enjoying, or is it something specific?
Agree with that 100%
I owned a 2014 R9T for two years. Loved it, then I rode a 2022 Triumph Rocket 3gt. I have the Rocket now. Love it, but have fond memories of the BMW.
BeMoto didn’t want to insure my R9T even I’m already a customer the reason because I don’t have a garage!!! Where the bike is parked is much safer than a garage computer said NO 😤
Sorry not the place to complain but as it’s one of your sponsors just putting it there.
Choppsy you know all the dogging lanes😂 I would buy the triumph just for looks .
I love them, they're definitely a retro-futuristic bike but I love a bit of retro futurism.
Love this review. You have a real nack of waffling some pearls of wisdom chopsy 😄 The 75/25 ratio comment was gold
Looking forward to seeing the Hyper vid 👍

It's nice to stretch and relax your feet on the cylinders on those bikes. Nice on cool days as well, gives pleasant warmth
I much prefer the style of the R9T over the Speed Twin. It may be my next bike. Great review. Thanks
You know what? I’m going to make myself a cup of coffee… I’m really looking forward to watching this.
Thanks chopsy, enjoyed over coffee Sunday morn...
That's my Sunday morning viewing sorted......thanks Chops 👍😁
I had the original R90 in the day and also the Bonne in the 70's. I thought the R90 had the edge then and still think so now. mind you, I still own both BMW twins and British twins and enjoy them both for how they make me feel. I now own other bikes to go fast on though :)
I love my R9T Scrambler. The Akra pipes come standard. Everybody I ride with says it sounds great from behind.
What most people don’t know is this is the only model with an aluminum tank. All others are steel. If the forks are gold, the tank is aluminum
I test drove an r9 and it was nice but the Bonnie was better for me.
@00:58
One correction.
For me it is the most fun and beautiful Bmw bike, hands down ! Great video good job.
Two notes:
Yes think your right 👍
Except maybe the clunky jeerbox...like every Beem I've ever ridden from the R69 to the 800GT...
The 75% vs. 25% does make sense, also liked 'smooth but you can feel the lumps..' for RE GT
No, it doesn't make more torque
@@yurig2530 ah yes, correct. R nine T 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm, Speed Twin 112 Nm at 4250 rpm
The R9t standard is top of the range. I love mine.
The real wild price differential is here in the states, a speed twin will run you about $12,500 USD, a BMW R9T will run you about $18,000 USD.
Great video. You should try the rarer R9T Racer. I love mine and is stunning to look at in the garage. The riding position is a little extreme but suits me. Worth a try if you can.
Couldn’t cope with riding position got R9t sports
I would definitely go for the 9Nine as it is really unique, engaging, beautiful and full of character. The Triumph is a nice machine but it is still stightly asceptic and doesn't handle as well, especially cornering. The Boxer engine also sounds amazing and is a myth.
Which kit did you use for lowering the footrests?
@@HUSKY7-1 not sure if the question is for me
Apologies, it was meant for someone else, not sure how it ended up under your comment

One of the best reviews I’ve seen on these great bikes. 👍
Akrapovic, and spoked rims comes standard in Nine T, they are extras with other models: Pure, Urban, Scrambler.
Laterally mounted flywheel gives the lay over effect.
G'day LCR. A very good video and a very good machine but i still like the Speed Twin. It'll do everything
the RnineT can at a cheaper cost, its for me.
I am lusting after the gs version
Great review Chops! I do miss hanging around in the garage while you work on your bikes. Can’t wait for more of that!
✌️🍻
Regarding making it onto a track bike, there was a BMW Motorrad BoxerCup - BMW R nineT Racer series run across Europe back in 2020.
I bought the '21 RnineT for the looks and it has become my favorite motorcycle. It's a special bike and fast.
Welcome in the world of Boxer👍
Hi,
I have to agree with you about the 75% bike / 25% ride.
Beautiful build quality…..I can see me keeping this bike for a good while,
nice one blue sky in the winter makes a change sir keep up the good work one of the best on youtube
One of the best….😉
Note that "BASE" is not the basic one... in effect it is the top of the line. ;)... I think it is called "nineT"... Spoked wheels come from factory by default. the only extras for this is the heated grips and cruise control... ;)
Incorrect regarding the wheels. The standard factory spoked wheels take inner tubes, where as the option 719 wheels on this bike run tubeless.
No fuel gauge. Fuel light comes on = 3 ltr fuel reserve @ 5.3l/100km = 56.8km spirited driving - maybe 80km if holding back on the right wrist.
Yes, I mentioned the no fuel gauge to the sales guy. His comment "Yes it has, the fuel light comes on then you have 60-80km to fill up!
I absolutely love the look of these bikes. Great honest review.
I am a Big Boxer fan. Loved your review. 👌👌
I quite like Beemers, especially the Boxer cup replicas, I remember them throbbing around in support races at Moto GP's back in the day, great review Chops. 👍👍👍🇬🇧
Love it.bmw were right to use the air cooled lump as a large radiator would ruin the look, after all it’s not a race bike .great vid 👍👍
Thanks Mike 👍 😊
Bought r nine t. I'm 36... he suits me very well... speed twin is for the elderly, and it is smaller, simpler in overall quality, and perception. and I love both this motor and its enthusiasm, and a touch of retro to myself. And also the absence of a chain speaks in his favor. cruise control, heated handles, a beautiful retro dashboard... there is something to pay for
but the gearbox could have been softer, and the gears could have been longer
I have a similar age and am thinking of getting one. I've read that it gets quite hot, especially in the city. Have you noticed anything similar and in the summer? Unfortunately I live in the city. And, do you still own it? Experience so far?
it has got a shaft drive 👍
Picked up mine. Such a good bike.
Greetings from 2018 RnineT in Vancouver:)
Maybe a Speed Twin one day …
Quality review thanks chopsy.
First bmw I've ever wanted to buy! At 6,2" size of bike does matter to me. Thanks!
Hyper Motad ! I'd given up on that. It's been going longer than Coronation Street. Good work on the Rnine T
Thanks Dad, stripped the bottom end today!
Great review, had one a few years ago and had beautiful detail around the bike.
