- Since Ukraine announced that the production of their best tank, the BM Oplot would be continuing, I thought it would be a good time to compare it to the best Russian tank in active service, the T-90M.

Yes there is a few examples they where going to produce them before Russia annexed Crimea. A lot of companies that made compentents for the T84Oplot where in Crimea and not available so Ukraine now has to start agian. Though with Challenger 2 tanks, Leopard 2s and Abrams tanks coming in I think the T90Ms Russia will have to bring more to the battle field or risk thier Arfarta tanks. Though depleted Urainium rounds will peirce the T90M not a problem.

I think the only real downside of the T-90M is that its still using the old transmission giving it only a 4km/h reverse speed. The torque would be insanely high but that doesn't save you when your being engaged.

Yeah people complain about carousel but they added armor on it and chances of cookoff decreased significantly. Only thing hindering T-90M is it's horrendous reverse speed. I don't understand why are Russians so adamant to not fix it

@@nekko5778 T-72s does only have 1 reverse gear with 4 km/h max speed which is really bad even if the driver only drove 2 or 3 km/h it wouldnt make any big differenc

I think the amount of APFSDS used in this war is extrmeley mininal. 99% of a tanks targets are not going to be other tanks, every war with tanks in it has shown this. Even WW2, which has had by far the largest tank conflicts in history, saw tanks rarely facing tanks, when compared to how often they faced other targets.
I wonder then if the tank training received by Ukrainian crews in the UK will be of higher value than initially thought, as modern British tank doctrine is arguably more centred around infantry support instead of tank v tank.

This is something that is very overlooked in wars.... probably the dumbest thing NATO has done tankwise was not issuing HE projectiles during the cold war, but only HEAT, APFSDS and HESH. (Thankfully in recent time they NATO tanks have extremely efficient airburst HE)
Lmao no, tank x tank combat despite not being that common is definetely not as rare as they say, as it is intuitive to deploy tanks to combat other tanks on the field of battle; and on ww2 tank x tank combat was extremely common, since the scale of that conflit.
Keep in mind that mbts are designed to fight other tanks, if tank x tank combat was so rare they would focus much more on the infantry support capabilities.
Don't forget iraq war, which was determined by huge tank x tank battles.
It is not that tank x tank combat is rare, it is that having footage of those combats is rare.

Challenger 2 is in armoured infantry brigdaes which is your standard mechanized infantry built around high mobility tank/armored vehicle warfare, rather then positional infantry fighting
Soviets were the ones who still kept companies assigned to motorised infantry, and the US are bringing the concept back with MPF which will be assigned to Infantry Brigade Combat Teams and not Stryker or Armored Brigades

In any case, the crew will be less effective in combat against an army with better intelligence, communications, UAVs, tanks with APS. The crew and soldiers in general are not the most important thing in the war. the most important thing is the actions of the command. Not even the best crew in the world can win in spite of their shit commanders.

Russians basically make same tank from introduction of T-64. Differences are marginal and hard factors are not as important as soft factors, despite what people think. Both tanks are obsolete.
Great comparison. One comparison I would love to see is the T-64BV vs T-72B3. Why? Because that's the tanks that have suffered the highest losses in the war on each side and I'm fairly certain they're the most used ones as well. They're the backbones if you will.

u also get to have longer projectiles increasing performance, as of now Russian tanks like T-72/T-90/T-80 have reached the peak length and they can’t increase the size of the projectile meaning the performance cannot increase
@@cmdrmonkey chobham armor is just a name for British composite armor. Its not magic or special really, actually by now probably outdated since its like 40 years old at this point. The first use of composite armor was actually by Soviets. T-90s already have composite armor of their own design.

So Ukraine's "brilliant" idea is to field Leo 1's with a 105mm (L7 ammo), AMX-10RC's with a medium pressure 105mm (not compatible with L7 ammo), Challenger 2's with 120mm rifled ammo (2-piece not compatible with 120mm smoothbore ammo), Leo 2's & Abrams with 120mm smoothbore ammo, and are putting into production a design that has a 125mm 2A46 compatible ammo cannon? Whoever is the head of their logistics just walked over to the front lines waving a white flag, to hand himself over to Russian forces. Sounds like a totally sane, war winning strategy that could only be cooked up by NATO and Ukrainian officials.

I mean they are able to wield all sorts of Artillery systems, both western and soviets, as well as an insane amount of fighting vehicles from around the world. Who says they can do that with tanks?

It really boggles the mind that the Russians haven't replaced the transmissions. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that if the Ukrainians can install a gear reverser, then the Russians should be well and capable of doing the same.
Also as you mentioned numbers of T-90M, I've been trying to get a handle on how many have been produced since the Kherson offensive, and my best estimate is 320 or so. It could be as low as 250, or as high as 375. Just going off visible serial numbers and extrapolating, as well as collecting videos of tanks being delivered on trains. Not the most accurate method, but it's safe to say Russia is likely delivering about 2x as many tanks to the battlefield as Ukraine is receiving from us in the west.

I was a T-72 gunner with the 6th guards motor rifle regiment. The reverse speed might seem like garbage when performing maneuvers in combat, but once the tank gets stuck in mud or other unfavorable terrain (happens a lot especially during the mud season), the very high gear ratio in reverse allows it to either get itself unstuck or helps massively when another Russian tank is required to tow the stuck tank

@@Pao234_ I'm pretty sure that the engineers at UVZ have investigated this matter before making their choice. You can't imagine just how meticulous design processes can be.

To add more gears requires a redesigned gearbox, and though this level of technical specificity is beyond what I am familiar with, larger and heavier gearboxes are required to accommodate more reverse gears which may prove too bulky for the T-series vehicles unless the gear ratio was changed, and on top of that it would result in reduced components interchangeability with other Russian tanks, which is partially the reason why the T-80 program was abandoned. And you may think that reversing faster is more important than recovering a stricken vehicle stuck in mud, but the soviet/Russian doctrine has a pretty consistent track record of prioritizing logistical soundness over sheer combat performance.
Russia has more T-14 that Ukraine has Oplots. Maybe you should have compare Oplot and Armata because of comparable amounts of tanks available
TBF the biggest T-90 disadvantage still exists in T-14 (can't reverse). Other than that T-14 should be better in other scenarios except the ability to produce, since it used a lot of electronics which are now sanctioned and hard to get. But Oplots are not produced as well so I guess we can call it a tie in that regard, since having 20 T-14 without the ability to construct more is not very useful.

Anyway I guess if you can produce T90M in numbers, you can produce T14 as well... May be a little downgraded, if there is really some kind of techno block, but nevertheless
@@iyhan1987 the entire point of T-14 was being so "scientifically advanced" that the west would fear it, therefore they put a bunch of semi-advanced electronic stuff, which is not present in T90, I don't remember exactly what. I'm not a big fan of Russian tanks and ERAs in general but I have to admit both tanks are pretty impressive, the T-90M looks pretty badass and the ERA used on the Oplot is interesting

the problem with Nizh is that its effectivness depends on where the hit lands
for example, if projectile hits last hollow charge, all 10 would affect it
but if it hits first, it would be affected only by 1
Also, because of how big Duplet is, part of T-84's base armor is cut out to mount ERA
That's why the lower sections have various angles of the charges - to maximize the hit radius. Same is with side sections for hull and the turret.
Another issue is the single use. Once it is triggered, the tank functionally misseda solid chunk of armor while on the T90M it at least still has access to all it's plating.

Me personally, for Russia, they should just abandon the T-14 project and start allocating all those funds towards the T-90M, constantly improving on the design, especially it’s reverse speed. It’s a pretty decent tank all-around.

Engine and transmission are connected together to form whats known as a tank powerplant. With t80s gas turbine engine and t90 piston engine i doubt the trannys are interchangeable
you cant just out t80 transmision in to t72 hull thats not how that works
That's not that simple, there're huge difference between gearboxes and connecting modules
All T-90M already have a 15 kmph reverse speed. It's still a downside, but not as big as for older modifications. Don't know where 4 kmph is coming from.

I think it's kind of unfair to compare these two, oplot is made or still in existence in handful of numbers while t90m is in hundreds, the more fair comparison is oplot vs armata, or t64bv vs t90m...
Armata? Why? This is different generations of tank. Armata can be compared only to abramsx if it ever being produced.

There are not hundreds of T-90M. Most figure are around 100 before the war.

Availability of tanks doesn't affect the tank's technical category. Oplot is comparable to T90M or T80BVM; while T14 is a different generation.
I would like to point out about the T-90M that it uses a Catherine XP/LR Thermal Imager which is 3rd generation Thermals, Relikt ERA (as said in the video) which makes it so that APFSDS has 50% less penetrating power (M829A2 could not penetrate a T-90A which was fitted with Relikt while M829A3 struggled to be consistant), however it does have a "weakspot" in the turret which the T-90A doesn't have which is right ontop of the gun mantlet, where the turret is higher but where APFSDS should not be able to penetrate.
Thales Catherine XP/LR Thermal Imager - Made in France. Which means the russians may manufacture as many T-90s as they want but since the electronics are made in the west and so they are unobtanium for the russians after the invasion. So the new T-90s will be just a nice props for propaganda but worthless in combat. So your dissertation on US APFSDS rounds is pointless.
@@haloguy628 While i agree that what i said about M829A2 and A3 may not sound realistic, but it is, as pointed from the manufacturer of Relikt and even a German document about it, which says that DM63 (and M829A2/A3 too basically) cannot penetrate modern Russian MBTs in the front plate.

People saying that it's strange that Russians aren't replacing the transmission. Keep in mind that this is still the nation that didn't wanna replace the KV tank with better and newer designs, and just slapped some armor plates all around to make it's armor more effective. The butt ERA on the T90M is the perfect example
The most probable reason is that theyre using the same transmission for so long that changing it would mean changing the production lines to the point where it could hamper the production of the tanks so much.
BM-Oplot had the same production challenges when they were delivering tanks to Thailand.

@@wulfleyn6498 They need the blueprints which they can reverse engineer but even then which country would suspend their own tank production to make a foreign tank. The USA makes about 100 new tanks a year and all of europe together probably makes about the same. Putting a new tank in production would be too costly and inefficient. If Nato makes 50 a year that would be surprising.

The BM Oplot is pretty damn good all things considered.
The Duplet armor System seems super effective, and the mobility is excelent.
Of course, it has a lot of oversights, and has reduced anti tank capability for a top modern tank.
They are just TOO few to make any difference, and I doubt Rheinmetall could come close to UralVagonZavod's production.

I would love for it to get some field experience, because the fact they had to remove part of the upper frontal plate to not break the suspension because of how heavy Duplet is gives me the feeling that the tank may not be as reliable as one would wish. Unlike Russia with the T90M, which seemed to modernize practically the entire platform (aside from the transmission lmao), the Ukrainians seemed to just build up on the old T84 platform, without really changing much from the basic design (aside from the turret ammo rack, that was nice). We may have something like a Panzer IV situation, where by the middle of the war, not much could be done to further improve it without redesigning things like the suspension or the general layout, something the Russians seem to have done with their original T90. I don't know, but the T90M seems just so much more practical and mass produceable to me

I like the BM for one reason, it doesn’t look exactly like a Russian tank which makes it both easier to identify and also gives the casual watcher an easier time knowing who is on what side in any rare tank on tank battles we see

Even if Ukraine had a wunderwaffe tank or a cheaper off the shelf one, I would question its production. Russia has historic and greater capability to produce tanks. So this video should just be seen as a fun one.
If they have enough parts left to repair/more t90ms use of western imports means they can't get more parts. Perhaps they made their own replacement, otherwise good luck.

Great vid but I would like to point out that T84BM oplot also can mount the KMDB 6TD-3 opposed piston 6-cylinder diesel (1,500 hp), instead of the 6TD-2E (1200hp) engine.
The best tank in Ukraine's arsenal is the ghost version. It's known for being invisible when in battle.

@@FullAutoWitch T-14 has more numbers under Russian Control (under less time as well, and this is adding the Thai order), this is a economical problem, I bet Russia has not focused on Armata... because of Ukraine, since everything seens to indicate an "armament campaing" starting in ~2016, with 2015 being the year the last year they tried to have minsk II upheld.
The T-90M3 can weight up to 54 tons according to some valid sources, depends on the modifications. Additional reactive protection alone it makes 50t. Then you have all the other stuff.. I think 48t is accurate for the T-90MS in 2017 version.
Can you cite them please? I find an increase by 6 tons by adding some cage armor hard to believe.

Not just cage armour dude. Carousel armour, cage armour, ERA, newer modern systems, 6ton on a tank honestly isn't much. Look at the TUSK Pack for the A2 SEP

What weight have they added to the T-90Ms since 2017? Just some additional cage armor for the most part, that's it. The modern systems, carousel armour, and Relikt were already on the tank.

@@sdrkrm I mean the old 3BM42 still went in by 60mm, you only need to add some 20+ mm of penetration and it will go trough the side of a T80. The tank (Oplot) itself seems very sluggish and the additional weight won't do it any benefits in wear & tear.
Making a good tank, is not just about making its triangle (firepower, mobility, protection) into a giant one, but it must be mass produced effectively and maintained for years to come. From what i understand, the Oplot has been plagued by massive reliability issues, due to its added weight and addition of components that have not gotten the necessary long term reliability testing.

Because in majority Oplot and Yatagan have the same base but different gun and ammo storage.

That gun will be useful on that tank.
Nozh/Douplette due to its design and function seem to need a pretty sharp angle to work, which might make it inable to stand hits not from that exact angle expected. So covering the roof might be nice for missiles comming in a ~30° angle, but not anything more directly top attacking, as this HEAT beam would perfectly go through the defensive projection from Nozh.
Same with threats hitting Nozh from a ~90° angle, as these wouldn't affect the threat at all. As this might be irrelevant for (not top attack) hits on the frontal armor, this very well might be relevant on side armor. From teh space and angle of the side shield, you can tell that Nozh is single layered and either top/down mounted, so both ERA lines might have at least a bad angle left, or they're from front to rear like snake scales, offering good protection from frontal hits, and then gradually degrad protection the more the angle of attack shifts to the side.
I also have my concerns about removing frontal armor for ERA cover. As ERA indeed offers better protection, and can be replaced/modernised way better, they still need to have something that have a indiscriminatly 'dumb' protection to catch the rest. Removind armor might make the whole degredation idea pointless. I know, its a coping strategy on top of copying strategys, but still i see some problems.
Addition: This limitations of Nozh rendering Oplot almost completley inable to protect against artillery fire, which is one of the main threats in the recent war.
Maybe a combination of flat tiles (instead of the heavy armor they removed, as well as on top) with a single explosivly projected plate would make sense, and protection would be a bit less niche against KE from one specific angle.
I would like to know if they could reduce the carousel autoloader detonation damage. They already have a shield on top so adding a sliding door like Abrams that automatically close after a reload is not that difficult. And blowout panel underside could be interesting but I don't think it could last a rough ride but blowout panels to the sides through the tracks can be possible. I wonder if they calculated it and come to the conclusion that energy release is too rapid for the crew to survive. Or it's one of those "possible but no money" situations.
It wouldnt be possible as the ammo carousel isn't isolated, so the pressure inevetably would still go to the cabin.

Maximum speed those APFSDS ever achieved in Russian service was just over 1700m/s which is muzzle velocity. As it travels down range, it loses the speed. So it's significantly less than 2km/sec. At 2km distance penetration is almost half of stated against "point blank" and even less so against angled plate.

How can you compare oplot to T90m? There are only couple of oplots made, while on other hand hundreds of T90M'S.
BM oplot is better for one simply reason: it is based on t-80U/UD which was most advanced MBT while t-90m is based on t-72B which was most simplified MBT of USSR. In other aspects they are nearly identical. Turrents were joint developed by both Russia and Ukraine in the 90-00's based on the works of Object 187, they differ a bit but nothing major. Both ERA designs were based on older soviet designs. As of thermals and other electronics, they put whatever best thing they could buy from the West. The main advantage of t-90m is that Russia can produce it, while Ukraine can not their BM oplot. Otherwise the tank is mediocracy or just a t-72 on steroids which should have been replaced with 'Object 187 if not famous Russian corruption.

Wouldn't Duplet ERA only be effective in countering kinetic and heat charges that are coming at an angle more than around 15 - 20 degrees of the armour?
if the main principle of survival is using heat charges to dissect the penetrator, then the angle between the charges and the penetrator should be of vital importance. i can see the glacis being the best spot for it but for shots to the side and even from old RPG rounds that send a sufficiently small penetrator, this would prove ineffective if hit in the right spots of which the probability is around 30 - 50%.

@Pao234 HE-F is actually quite potent on old tanks like the t64 if used on the Hull or turret roof.
Since in reality life tabk on tank warfare, it isn't necessary to kill the crew or detonate ammo to knock out a tank.
Simply tracking it, destroying the engine, destroying the optics, can render an otherwise perfectly undamaged vehicle useless.
T-90 M has abysmal reverse speed i hope they can fix that problem.

A forward/reverse lever with lockout on top gears is a good idea. Our U1300L and U1700L Unimogs in NZ had a lockout for the top four (of eight) gears. The forward/reverse lever itself is handy when you lose forward momentum on a slope.
Shortly after the Unimogs (mogs) came into service, a member of the RNZAF serving at Ohakea Air Base, removed the lockout pin from a Unimog transmission and reportedly got the truck up to 90km/h in reverse, on the runway, before he rolled it and killed himself.

One correction I have to spell out to you here. The thermal control unit on the left was made by Thomson-CSF (as depicted upside down in the still), while the one on the right is made by Thales. They're not copies of anything or anybody as Thomson-CSF (1968 - 2000) was the former trade name of Thales (2000 - current).
I feel like the T-64 style autoloader does have one thing that you neglected to mention:
It isn't inherently worse because the charges themselves are placed behind the main composite and explosive reactive armour sets of the tank, meaning that any shot that strikes them would have probably killed the crew anyhow, since they would have to have penetrated the upper front plate or the side of the tank. The T-72 style autoloader simply places them really low down, which makes them lower profile and thus harder to hit in any case, but that also means that the charges are not placed behind armour - if a projectile was to come in at a downward angle, enter the lower frontal plate, or a mine was to detonate below the vehicle, the T-72 autoloader is still equally vulnerable, if not more vulnerable.
So, in a sense, I don't really think that it matters too much in this regard, and that the T-64 autoloader might just be a little better because of the speed improvement: if it's faster and has such a little impact on the vehicle's survivability, then it has to at least be able to be considered as a superior option, or at least on par.

Generally speaking neither tank has yet to or likely will make a dent at all on the face of combat in Ukraine and will be relegated to moral boosts and propaganda value status as we have seen already.

Not really... During war times cost is not a factor. Only the the number of factories and the speed at which they are made. For example the US could produce thousands of the latest abrams if a war were to start even though the price of the tank is very high, but Briton couldn't produce even older challengers even if they are cheaper because of the limited production capacity
T90m i believe is 4-5 million. Oplot on the other hand is only 3 tanks. So the price is higher most likely. If the Ukrainians produced more oplots before the war the price could've been on par or somewhat lower than the t90m price

On paper, the T-90M is the superior tank (aside from the reverse issue). Of course, it isn't just the tank that matters, but the crew and supporting elements, so that somewhat evens it out. Perhaps in the future we will see a BM Oplot-2 which addresses these problems.
If Ukraine is planning on producing the BM-Oplot now, it will likely get upgrades. Its over a decade old design that has barely any produced so they won't be upgrading existing vehicles, but making new ones. And if they are setting up a factory to make new vehicles, its a easy opportunity to upgrade its systems.
And the reverse issue makes it on paper a worse tank.
The other T90M advantage are very small and situational. The reverse speed is not, as the war in Ukraine shows.
You’re much more likely to survive a battle in an Oplot with its reverse speed and better armor than in any T90M. Side armor in the carousel or not.

BM Oplot is a Ukrainian T-14 Armata: it has been on parades and exhibitions since 2008. Ukrainian presidents have been photographed with it all the time, saying "We're about to start mass production for our army".
I am sad for the engineers and design department that they have been told beautiful stories for 15 years about "How important your tank is to us".
It is more likely that after the war Ukraine will buy Leopards or Abrams - they are time-tested and ready for service.
And the US/Germany will definitely help them in this: re-entry and commissioning and upgrading old Abrams/Leopards => jobs = electoral votes.

Ukraine abandoned the knife system due to its low efficiency, and switched completely to Kontakt-5. No tank or other armored vehicle was equipped with the knife system after the start of hostilities
I remember watching a Ukrainian tank unit video going over how they abandoned their T-84 cause it was getting overrun. They came back and it was still there so they retrieved it.
I also remember how the tank commander said he had 6 T-84 BM Oplots also didn't Thailand sign a procurement contract for 48 T-84s so theres bound to be more than 6 as surely those that were meant for export were put into Ukrainian service
They were facing production issues before the war, which is why they struggled to provide the tanks to the Thai in the first place. They might have more but still a tiny number I would imagine.

You forgot a feature of the T-90M: as of March of 2023, all new T-90M tanks will be outfitted with the Arena-M hard-kill APS, with a retrofit program likely to come in the future over an unknown timeline. As such, T-90M is fully superior to the BM Oplot in every way except reverse speed.

Unfortunately, UA-cam deletes any reply with a link these days, so I can't post it here.
Why T-90M hasn't received Arena APS until March of this year had to do with teething issues with Arena APS itself where it was proven to be very hazardous to infantry that happened to be near the tank. Fixing that issue took long enough for the performance requirements to be raised, hence why T-90M is receiving Arena-*M* instead of original Arena.

There was a report written up on the captured T-90ms, the things you say on paper in this video do not actually apply to the real tanks, both were not hermetically, the armor is the same as the T-72B 1989, the engine loses 1/3 of its power in warmer climates, there was no functioning intercom system, the interior looked like it had been exposed to the elements for many years ect ect.
