Well done! I LOVE my Voltron of gaming systems which is my Sega Genesis, Sega CD, 32X combo. In some ways, I wished Sega was more like Nintendo because, with the exception of the Virtual Boy, Nintendo knows how to support its platforms. Back in the day of the N64 Nintendo had their 3 pillar strategy of N64, GBA, and DS, and Nintendo was able to play to the strengths of each console and provided some great gaming experiences on each. If Sega did not have so much infighting they could have had something similar with the Sega Genesis, Game Gear, 32X & Saturn. In the very least the 32X and Saturn should have been pillars for the company with the Sega Saturn being the home of high memory next-gen games like Nights and the Panzer Dragoon series with the 32X as a home for all the 32-bit arcade games that never made it home like a true arcade version of Super Monaco GP, Rad Mobile and Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder. The 32X also could have been home to some incredible 2D 32-bit platformers. That was money left on the table. So sad. I am still hoping with the release of the Polymega and its built-in 32X support, love for the console will be so great, indie game developers would start to make 32X game carts. I would definitely pay the money to buy a quality 32X game. Again, thank you for this. I am a big fan of both Jenovi and RGT85. At the very least I feel like as a retro console, the 32X is finally getting more respect in no small part due to videos like these. Thank you!

It's really crazy how much missed potential the 32x had. Like yeah sure whatever, Sega CD has CDs!! Ooooo!! But the 32x had solid potential to bounce off of Sega's arcade backlog, especially with those brilliant Space Harrier and After Burner ports. Augh, wish there was more forethought into that thing.

I'm so curious about what the 32x CD games were capable of when pushed to the limit. You have the dual CPUs in the 32x The Sega CD CPU and custom ASIC and the Genesis CPU. It could have been a killer 2d monster

46 MIPS plus what's in the Genesis already is overkill for placement of sprites in 2D. It's the vector graphics (and arcade scaling and rotation in software) that required the powerful SuperH.

You've got the unbridled raw horse power of the almighty 32XCD+karaoke+floppy disc/home banking system, then you use your SEGA multitap to plug in a Menacer for your strong arm and the Konami Justifier for your weak arm, you've got your Aeroblasters glove on so your grip holds tight & true, you power up the Aura interactor so u can feel every lazer blast and explosion, you plug in your Mega Modem and lower the Visor of your SEGA VR Helmet, using the Mega Mouse to select which SEGA Channel game to play, you brace yourself as you prepare to enter The Next Level!

Jenovi, I would like to commend you for that other video because you reiterate the same points here. Here what I adored.
    1. You actually go into detail about the Mega Drive's failure in Japan and not just mention it in an unimportant matter.
    2. You actually talk openly about the development of the Saturn and 32x. For the case of the latter, you successful went into heavy details without mentioning the 32x being a response to the jaguar.
    3. You don't mention sonic at all considering the first point as well as how misleading the "Genesis Does" commercials are. Speaking of which, I admired the fact that you showed a Japanese commercial in your video instead of an American one.
    4. You remained silent about the American launch of the Dreamcast and focused primarily the console's performance in Japan. It is clear you respect David Rosen who wisely questioned Sega's decision to continue their console business after the failure of the Saturn.
    5. Speaking of which, you did an excellent job showing that next gen article featuring that interview with David Rosen. I paused to read over it and it was very clear that Sega should have stayed out of the console business.
    6. Speaking of which, it is very obvious from your discussion that nothing, not even sonic, could stop the failure of the Saturn. Speaking of which, it is very obvious that the problems with the franchise are rooted in the failure of the console business. Here is a video that shows how dire the situation is for sonic.ua-cam.com/video/RYBTMs7x41I/v-deo.html

What you bring to the table in terms of knowledge is amazing, Jenovi. You're the type of guy I wish I was friends with growing up. There is just something about your delivery that makes me feel more connected as a viewer. I watch a lot of retro content on UA-cam and you are the first that I've seen that has ever connected the dots for me between the dual processors of the 32x, Saturn and the programming aspects. As a die-hard sega fan back in the day, this understanding wins them back some respect in my mind. After buying all the previous Sega systems and hedging my bets on the Sega Saturn being the one system to rule them all with the launch day price tag... when that failed and support dropped, I was literally completely disheartened after feeling burned by the 32x. I was the only kid in my HS with a Sega Saturn when everyone else had Playstations. Because I believed in it. And still to this day, I literally have no attachment to the Dreamcast. I've never even played one. The hype for it wasn't any different from what I experienced leading up to the Saturn. By the time I was heading off to college, I swore I would not be making that mistake again.

Great content and discussion! As a kid, I had very limited exposure to 32x. Not a single person in my sphere of friends and class mates got one or even expressed a desire to get one. At this stage we were fully transitioned fo the SNES and every time we saw a game ported to multiple platforms, SNES always looked and sounded better. Even with the 32x attachment, the CD and 32x ports really didn’t seem much better or warrant the extra cost of the attachments.
I’m not hating on the 32x, I have one and think it’s pretty cool, but I could totally live without it, and if Sega has never released it and jumped right to a slightly lower cost Saturn, the video game world might have been a very different place in the 90s.
You have made me curious to give more 32x games a fair shake. I know that Star Wars Trilogy as RGT mentioned was really good... and he’s absolutely right that Virtua Fighter looking that good on a 16bit console was pretty impressive... but it was still 16bit looking and the leap from that to the Saturn port was such a large leap.
I know I’m wrong in saying this from a technical standpoint... this was just my perception, but through my 16 year old eyes at the time, the 32x simply looked like a $150 device that gave the Genesis access to a much larger color palate and maybe could store more game data... so games would be longer and have more depth... but to me, they were still just regular Genesis games with more colors.
Seeing how quickly the 32x disappeared into the clouds of obscurity and over shadowed by the 32bit CD generation only confirmed my prejudices towards the 32x.

Your not wrong your right on the bat. Sega should have forget the 32x. Continued the last push of the genesis and sega cd. Developed SVP games for both platform till the Saturn arrives in every region. Even they could release a cart only version of the Saturn with a cd-on and/or all-in one unit the following year for regions outside of Japan.

I hated Sega for a few years after that because I was basically stuck with no new console until 1997. People blame the 32X--which no one was ever forced to buy--but it was really the changing, bizarre roadmap of Mars, Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, etc, that developers and gamers couldn't adapt to. When Nakayama-san ordered all developed save the Saturn canceled in October of 1995, any faith left in the company outside of Japan was gone. With the Megadrive long gone and the Saturn taking off there, the decision made sense. Outside of Japan, destroying the Genesis/Megadrive AND the 32X and CD was perceived as yanking the rug out from under us and expecting us to fork over ANOTHER $400 for a system that didn't seem much more capable than the $700 of 32X CD.
    And we were broke!

  • @boblowes
    @boblowes 3 роки тому

The 32X is a badly misunderstood piece of hardware. The roadmap Sega were working too was actually very good - but I think with so many other machines coming out at that time, the market was getting saturated with consoles, and an add-on didn't to the old console didn't make sense to most people - developers, retailers and consumers alike. Which is a shame. Maybe if they'd got it out a year earlier, it could have made a huge difference. Still, I'm glad to own one, along with my Mk1 Mega Drive and Mk1 Mega CD. It's wonderful-looking Frankenstein nightmare of plastic.
I do recommend though, that owners of any combination of Genesis/Mega Drive and it's add-ons consider an all-in-one PSU. I bought one from Retro Game Supply (en.retrogamesupply.com/). It supplies power to all the Mega Drive, Mega CD and 32X from one laptop-style power brick. The guy who runs it is very easy to deal with, and the quality is superb. He ships worldwide, with a mains power adapter for your country, as well as making combination power supplies for other machines - eg, a Famicom and Famicom Floppy Drive, various combinations of PC Engine hardware, Atari Jaguar with Jaguar CD. Well worth it if you have multiple consoles like me, and a limited number of mains power sockets for them.

I'm working with the Doom Resurrection crowd, and there's more than can be done on that system. SuperH is pretty tough to write hand assembled code for, and most are just using C and, like many developers, not bothering to figure out how to use the two RISC processors and four DMA channels. Another reason why SEGA should've just built a 32-bit 68EC030 Genesis like they'd talked about before starting on the 32X.

    Yes, I definitely have questions.
So, Sega was well known, especially on the Saturn, for making all the specs for the hardware available, then letting programmers figure it out for themselves how to make anything on the platform happen.
The hardware of the 32X was mostly just the two chips and a 3d chip (BTW, how related was this to the SVP in the Genesis Virtua Racing?, and did it also concentrate on Quads like Sega's arcades at the time?), so programmers who were used to throwing together tiles and sprites and having the machine do most of the work with a predefined pipeline suddenly had to make renderers, and push together everything in software that they had been relying on the hardware to do before. Did Sega publish any sort of SDK, or was there any middleware to attempt to help developers into the ecosystem, or did they just have to be heavily skilled in an area that basically only Sega's first party programmers had any experience in?

That was the criminally underused 32X CD. There were very few games on the Saturn that couldn't have been done 80-90% as well on the 32X CD.
And that's why so many Sega enthusiasts were so livid with the company, feeling ripped off now that the $400 Saturn was on its way out, and third party developers were abandoning their $700 "Tower of Power" for Saturn or PlayStation. SEGA was on death watch from then on, but the seeds of its destruction had been sown with lackadaisical support for the Sega CD.
