  • Episode 95 - I've been a fan of the Atari 5200 for some time now, owning almost the complete library, two (yes, two!) working controllers, and I've played every official release for the system. There are a ton of top ten videos out there for the system, but they really don't seem to nominate games that really make the system special. So that's what we are doing here. These are ten games that still make the 5200 worth owning in 2022. They may not be the ten best games, but all are worth owning and are some of the best the system offers.

    A 5200 Postmortem :
Here are some details for clarification.
    1. SNARCast pointed out the 5200 Gremlins did release for the C64. Not sure how I missed this, but I 100% had no clue. So it would be fair to call this a console exclusive but not a full-on exclusive.
    2. About that Gremlins release date in 1986
ABlackFalcon asked about the Lucas Arts games released in 1986. Unfortunately, I don't have a definitive answer, and I looked into it quite a bit while making this video. From what I could find, there seemed to be a very limited release for both Rescue on Fractalus and Ballblazer in 1984. I've even seen an Atari Corp box dated 1984, which I found interesting but there are not many answers there. Looking at a cashed version of the developers' website (
    web.archive.org/web/20030203125512/www.lucasarts.com/20th/history_1.htm )
They seem to agree with these dates, stating both games were released on the 5200 in '84. So it appears they were likely released right as the company changed hands, and a few did go out, but it's also possible they were only partially manufactured and shelved until 1986. There’s a ton of discussion about this, but I’ve hit a wall resource-wise. One other thing of note, there is strong evidence that Gremlins shipped in 1987 and not 1986, or at minimum, at the dead-end of 1986. For the video, I had two approach options for determining release years. 1, use printed material and copywrite dates. It's the method most 5200 enthusiasts go by. 2, Use internal documents. Neither meshes well with the other, but I chose number 1. Using number 2 concludes that Gremlins was released in 1987, never selling a single unit in 1986.
So if Rescue on Fractalus and Ballblazer were released in 1986, then we know precisely how many were manufactured and sold.
    Rescue on Fractalus 1986-1990
    11,217
    Ballblazer 1986-1990
    19,560
    Gremlins 1987-1990
    5,016
Personally, I feel Rescue on Fractalus & Ballblazer released in limited form during 1984, and I believe Gremlins shipped at the tail end of 1986.
Ultimately, we just don’t know, but someone does, and the answer may yet finally manifest itself.

3 weeks ago I bought a totally refurbished beautiful original 4 port 5200 system/controllers along with 17 games at a store here in NYC. If you truly want to feel like its 1982 again, playing these games on the system is a blast! The design of this system combined with game play really give you an authentic feeling of what it was like in 1982. It's similar to driving a 1965 Mustang and listening to The Beatles on an AM radio.
As for the controllers. If you get a refurbished original controller, you will be ok. In fact I much prefer the 5200 controller over the new Atari VCS classic controller any day as far as response time goes on 5200 games. The refurbished controller also worked great on games like Pac Man and Joust.
I am 50 so I remember this era of video gaming very well. This machine (with all of its charming quirks) is a beautiful representation of the time period its from.

I’m probably one of the only people in my generation who loves experiencing the pre NES era of gaming. (I was born in 2003)
Despite how young I am, Atari 2600 was one of the first consoles I played and those early experiences gave Atari a special place in my heart.
I like experiencing different versions of arcade ports as even though they are inferior to the arcade versions, it is cool to see it in a different lens.
Each recreation of an arcade game to inferior hardware, (Atari, Coleco, Intellivision, etc) has more personality than the perfect arcade version ports on modern consoles to me.
It is more interesting to see the shortcomings and compromises to make it run on the Atari hardware in comparison to downloading and playing the game on Xbox One for example.
But again I have weird tastes in games.

At the very least, 5200 is an interesting console for its peripheral options. I think Dreamcast is similar in that sense, and I think the compromises made with modern game controllers are really evident when you consider how many types of older games play really poorly on modern controllers. This was especially true with Wii, which had so many games that simply didn't work as well with Nintendo's attempt at a motion controller that attempted to mimic aspects of more specialized hardware.
Great video, by the way. You seemed kind of down on it on Twitter, so I don't know whether it just came together later on in editing or whether you were just being a bit too hard on yourself during the process, but I think it turned out well.

The 5200 was my first console and I'll always have love for the system. If not for those damned faulty controllers I'd still have one today. As for your list, you listed mostly games I didn't own as a kid. I would have included games such as Jungle Hunt, Pengo, and especially Pitfall 2. The 5200 version of Pitfall 2 includes an exclusive second quest with a whole different map that opens up once you complete the main game. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video and I hope you do lots more 5200 coverage in the near future!!

I found a working 5200 while clearing out my grandparents' basement. I replaced the flex circuit in both controllers and had a whole 2 days before the start pause and reset buttons stopped pushing. I also have a track ball controller, but upon starting anything it just sends me running directly to the left or right side of the screen once I roll it. Loved the community behind controller repair (best 2 days of my life!), but I just wish there was more info about track ball controller repair too.

  • @BeyondTheScanlines

I'm going to be taking this from a slightly offset angle, if only because being Australian means I've never used a 5200 in person (no PAL release of it), so my experience of what it's capable of is more via the 8-bit computer family.
Two definite picks for me would be Star Raiders and Rescue on Fractalus. The former is something I feel would be *amazing* with the 5200's controller, particularly for the extra range of control analogue input offers. Whilst for Rescue on Fractalus, the same applies, but it's also got a killer atmosphere (in large part thanks to the colour palette of the Atari 8-bit & 5200 chipset), which I don't feel any other port matched.
Am glad to see Dreadnaught Factor & Zone Ranger on the list - both are great shooters which deserve a bit more love than they get. I imagine Dreadnaught Factor would be amazing with the 5200's stick, and dual fire buttons (going between your bombs and shots is clunky on the 8-bit version).

Excellent game choices! Also, it's good that you discussed the controller choices for the games, as that's a major part of getting the most out of this system. Whether it's a Trakball or a controller coupler for twinstick shooters, these aspects need to be taken into account when considering the system. The 5200 has many unique aspects of control, and the games you decided to show off really demonstrated that. Again- excellent work. This one's a gem!

      I'm the luckiest on earth.
I straight up found an Atari 5200 with a dozen games, 2 standard controllers, and 1 Wico controller, all in an old neighbors basement. When I showed interest they just staight gave it to me. They didn't know where it came from or even knew they had it but guessed it was given to them by a church friend back in the day but never used. Oldest thing i ever saw them have was Nintendo, so this had been put aside in an open dusty box for possibly decades. My eye just happened to hit it one day last year while in their basement, and they wanted nothing to do with it and were super nice.
I had just purchased myself a 7800 a few months before and got real into Atari. Never thought I'd get one. Someone in the 5200 group said that 5200s have a way of finding their owners!

The fire buttons and number pads needed cleaning, i wiped this black stuff off the flex circuit to get em going. But start button and joystick never failed, and the wico has never failed, so I was able to play right away in my case.

It's great to see an appreciative Atari 5200 video rather than one that simply bashes it. As someone who grew up playing the 5200 with my cousins, I know very well that the software library is actually awesome and super-fun to play. We spent hours having a blast with Frogger, Defender, Mario Bros, and H.E.R.O. among others.
However, I do have to disagree with you about the hardware -- even with my rosy nostalgia glasses on, honesty compels me to say the 5200 earns every iota of its bad press on that side of things. Between the gargantuan form factor and the worst-in-history controllers that were prone to every failure imaginable (if it wasn't the drifting analog stick, it was the buttons failing... including the Start button needed to even play the games), it's a very hard console to recommend to modern audiences for the simple reason that any un-doctored original hardware is almost guaranteed to be a "lemon" of some sort. And though the modern controllers you linked to solve many of those issues, each costs over $100 apiece and is prohibitively expensive for all but the most hardcore 5200 enthusiasts. Personally, I'd recommend modern gamers emulate or play these titles in an Atari collection title -- don't sleep on the 5200 versions, kids!

Awesome you did a 5200 video as its the latest system to grace me! Cant wait to check it out.
The 5200 is really special to me, but i like it most for what makes it unique. What it does that the A800 doesnt. ANALOG and it's controller. I'll tell you how to make yours a caddilac for select games.
My number 1 is Missile Command. Easy top 5 gaming experience of all time kinda thing.. and not with a trakball but with the original analog joystick.
For maximum ease i highly recommend the rubber boot around the stick be torn or even removed. It's worth it. I was lucky mine was given to me that way to see the difference.
Analog paddles and trakballs don't have centering so certain analog 5200 games really shouldn't either. You don't want something tugging on your controles at all for Breakout, Kaboom, Star Wars Arcade, Missile Command, Gorf.. the only way I'll play those is if I'm on a Wico with self centering switch turned off or a standard with a torn or removed boot.
I recommend the standard because even with the boot gone it's not completely loose. You can also just make a tear on the center ring. Then it's even got some cushin on the edges. It's possibly my fav controller of all time as where my prestine 5200 with perfect boot I can barely stand.
I also recommend the US model controller with sunken in triggers as the other later models triggers are fat rubber and awkwardly stick out in comparison and are less clicky.
Ill explain for anyone reading why analog makes such a difference on these games. Other home system you have to push the curser at a single speed where you want it to go, but with 5200 Missile Command, Gorf, Breakout ect.. you simply just point and it's there, as fast as you can think. Just like a computer mouse but better!
No other system is like that. Fast as the eye.
Now it does depend how the game is programmed. Some like Centipede need the Trakball controller to unlock this feature, Centipede controls different in joystick mode and needs centering as where Missile Command leaves it at full range no matter the controller.
The boot was put there to accommodate for games that need centering like Pacman and most of the library. But a Wico stick with actual spring loaded centering is so much better for those imo.
What makes 5200 special to me are these non centering analog games. I couldn't have gotten the Gorf world record without my trusty torn boot controller.
5200 is really the big smooth caddillac it was meant to be, I was just lucky I was given one by my old neighbor last year. I wouldn't have experienced the magic otherwise.
An analog thumbstick would work for Pole Position and River Raid, but wouldn't on the games I listed above.
There are analog control games that need centering. So don't tear the boot unless you have a better backup.
Then there are analog control games better without centering. "2nd place record in Kaboom!"
And then there are digital control games that don't benefit from the 5200 analog whatsoever in any way, like Pacman, Popeye, and likely the majority of the 5200 library. People often get non analog controller options for these.
But its the handful of gems that make it stand out to me 💎. The reason 5200 was different. Without those games people might just get the Atari 800. Same hardware and games but without 180 degree analog.
Thx I just had to say all that because it's been a passion. Now I'll enjoy your video !

My dad had one of these when I was super small. Apparently the salseman at KMart convinced my father who was a software developer at the time that the 5200 was basically an Atari 800 computer. That was mostly a lie but a few years later when I was little I would sometimes unplug the NES and plug in the 5200. I thought some of the games were pretty cool. It had a much better than 2600 port of Pac Man, and excellent port of Ms. Pac Man, Vanguard (first shmup I every played), Qix, Galaxian, Countermeasure and Centipede. I really think that console would have done much better if not for the extremely delicate nature of the controllers. The buttons literally fell out of both controllers and the rubber boots around the joysticks pretty much disintegrated. Cool video and a great kinda forgotten console. Damn thing was so big it had controller storage on the back of the unit.

I gotta say, consoles like the 5200 are well before my time, but it's a time that I find very fascinating to learn about as far as video games go. If I ever find myself in possession of an Atari 5200, I know a lot of games I'd love to try, but it's really cool seeing some of these recommendations. There's still a lot that I've never heard of.

I really appreciate how this console unlike other obscure and failed ones it has packed in a lot of hidden gems that anyone was capable to enjoy at the time because of the controllers. I played all the library of this console via emulation and I swear I enjoyed all of those games despite of the broken analog/trackball emulation.

I still have my original 5200 from Christmas 82'. It sat for years until I got a newer analog controller. Now I can play most games again and along with track ball, just about all of them. There have been many 8 bit computer ports over to the 5200 like Laser Gates, Encounter, Satan's Hollow all great games. My favorite is Star Raiders for it, I mastered that game as a kid. I spent thousands of hours in Star Cruiser 7's cockpit! Lol But there is one game that is making a close second to me and it's a recent release. apparently it was completed but never released and was completed before it's arcade version wich was unusual back then. That is Blaster. Dude, you have to hook up your 5200 to a sound system and let the light and sound show blow you away!!! I still am impressed that this came out on a 5200 considering it's line scaling. Yes enemies and projectiles all are line drawn and scale, now mind with a fair amount of slow down, wich is understandable. But man that Pokey chip!! Love the sounds on that system, almost thunderous if hooked up to a sound system.

I think for many, the 5200 won't be appealing and I tried explaining that early in the video. Why beat around the bush trying to convince someone? It's essentially a system dedicated to a few genres. Imagine a console dedicated only to Sports and Puzzle games. No matter how solid the experience was, if you don't like that stuff, no minds will be changes. That's the deal here. Arcades remained relevant longer in small towns in rural America, where home consoles hadn't quite reached saturation.

      7800: 2 player support.

Star Raiders is the best game on the Atari 5200 and the Atari 2600. I will die on this hill....

Why is this Gyruss better than the nes version? 5200 definitely has worse graphics and its digital so not gaining anything with analog controller. What did I miss?

They are not the same game, that's the main deal. I also prefer the graphical style of the NES version. Most old timers during that era referred to Gyruss for the NES as Gyruss II or a Gyruss inspired Nintendified version. The NES version was easier and has bosses too, something that really changes the feeling of the game.

The coleco vision has way better games than the 5200 as well as double the library. Both controllers suck but the coleco sucks less. As far as the first system to do twin sticks, almost all of the home ports of robotron 2084 in 1983 supported twin joysticks. The main issue with the 5200 was the reliability of the controllers and hardware, especially if you have one of the 4 port consoles that carries power to the system over the RF switch.

It's personal preference, and for me, the 5200 wins in the games department, though I like the ColecoVision. For Robotron 2084, the only home console port in 1983 was the 5200, then later the 7800. Everything else released in the 80's was for home computers. Anyways, the twin stick reference wasn't about "Twin Sticks", it was regarding twin analog sticks, and the 5200 was first to do so, something now common on all modern game system.

@@Jenovi I said "Home port" not "Home console port". In the 80s Home computers were easily half of the gaming market and were sold on the same shelves in the same stores as the "consoles" of the time. Robotron is much better with with digital on off style joysticks just like it had in the arcade. In addition, the 5200 was not the first console to have twin analog sticks. That distinction goes to the Magnavox Odyssey 2 released in 1978...

@@hi-fibyharris8461 Huh? I've had an O2 for decades. I don't recall any game designed around a single player experience using both controllers, but then again, I don't own every game. Most important though, the O2 100% has digital controllers.

@@Jenovi you are 100% wrong about that. The Odyssey 2 joysticks are sensitive to how far in a given direction they are moved, therefore making them analog. Play Smithereens once and you can observe it first hand...

@@hi-fibyharris8461 Yeah, I have it. Smithereens is 100% a digital game. You hold the joystick to determine how far your bolder will travel( a digital action). I even tossed it back in to make sure I wasn't mistaken.

Atari and Sega should compete nowadays, not Xbox and Playstation 🥲 Nintendo could stay 🤣

Laughable! The 5200 did NOT "out compete the ColecoVision." The 5200 was a total bomb in the market. Get your facts straight!

The 5200 joystick is a funny setup, there is both a digital and analog style of input programming, meaning one could make a D-pad controller for it Eg. see Gravis Gamepad. Been thinking maybe a DC like layout with both present could remedy the feel difference matter across it's library.
Good news about the coupler is there are a lot of people selling 3D printed reproductions. Admittedly I've held off playing more because I'd rather use the Maker Matrix one, maybe he should just let people ship original cables to him since it's been a while since you could buy one.
Heard a funny anecdote about Gremlins, the programming author got to talking about it in an interview long after and was surprised to here it came out. I sought out a copy because it's a must own for this platform imo.
Yep TDF not the traditional shmup experience but it's not bad. Lol yeah I played far more Qix clones that the original, they should have added naked women. ;)
