This was the second game I had ever played on my Master System back in 1990, and is still one of my favorite games of all time. Lots of feels when I remember my parents teaching me how to play this, Shinobi, Sonic, Golden Axe and Columns. Still have all of them, still play them all the time.

However that's when you start speed running the game with the tiger and it changes the game again and leads to some crazy gameplay using the bird and the bendy launch pole thingy

I've always considered the lack of backgrounds as a plus more than a con, because that gives some kind of old school, additional charm to the game. It's so nice hearing that you changed your opinion about the game while you was playing it, kudos for that! :D
During the review, I was screaming to myself "this is Magical Hat/DecapAttack!" and wondering why SLX was not picking up on all the similarities. Great review and thanks for your honesty. I loved this game on the Master System. I never beat it before I sold my system. I wished there was a Game Gear version that I could play it on my Analogue Pocket. It is games like this that make me wonder why Sega never gave us an 8-bit Master System compilation collection for modern hardware like they have done so many times for the Sega Genesis. Psycho Fox would have been a great game to include in that collection and I know the collection would sell well.
I borrowed this without having the instruction manual as a kid and it was amazing to discover the pause menu and how to be able to change character. The tiger is by far the best for most of the game. It was the first game i completed and it has a fantastic end credit sequence. I ended up getting my own copy and discovered all the warp zones. There's one early on which takes you almost to the end of the game. It had multiple routes through the stages too which added replay factor. It was a shame they repeated ths bosses but overall it's one of the best games on the Master System if you can deal with the physics, if you don't like it on 60hz you'll despise it on UK PAL. Seeing games now played at their full speed still doesn't seem quite right after only having the slowed down versions.
That's so funny, I recently purchased an Anbernic retro-console, and have been playing all my old school games, namely finishing the ones I never did as a kid. You reviewed Alex Kidd in Shinobi world just after I played it for the first time. I then finished Psycho Fox as I just never beat it as a kid, and weeks later, here you have done it again. Well done, thanks for admitting that it was a great game. I loved it as a kid, just had a very high learning curve and the clunk controls I just never adapted to.
Glad you gave this one another shot. It may not have been the deepest game mechanically, or the most graphically impressive on the console, but it was pretty fun.
As a 7 year old, I was enamored by the box art and screenshots in magazines! I scored a copy and didn’t like it much. A few years later, I set aside my Genesis and gave it another try. It was much better this time around and I now remember it fondly.
I always wanted to play this when I was young. I had the sort of spiritual sequel Magical Hat and loved it to bits. Deffo gonna fire up Fox on an emu this weekend. Great vid X 😊
There was a time when I was so good at this game I could quickly use warp zones to face the final boss in under 5 minutes. It's kinda like Super Mario Bros. in that respect.
I thought I recalled that you previously said you didn't like this one, so I expected a negative review. Nice to hear that you adapted to it and ended up enjoying the game. It's a great experience when you give a game another shot and it finally clicks. I've had the experience a bunch of times where I gave a game a second(or third, or fourth) chance and ended up finally getting it. I didn't enjoy Gunstar Heroes the first time I played it. Due to how popular it was among players, I assumed it's just where my mind was at, and I was right. It's also feels a bit strange at first, which was an issue. It doesn't always work out giving a game a second chance, but it's worth it to try in many cases. I couldn't get into Cybernator or Yoshi's Island my first time with them, but enjoyed them both a lot much later. I had trouble getting back into Super Mario 2 as I got back into gaming as a retro gamer, but after a few attempts I finally got into it again. I've had that experience a bunch of times, and sometimes a game I didn't like will become a favorite of mine. Glad to hear that's the case here.
I have fond memories of this one. It is tough and strange, sure, because of the physics, but I'd say out of all the Vic Tokai titles in this style, Psycho Fox is the most charming of the bunch. The small cart size does hurt it, true, but for me, at least, the re-use of musical tracks felt more egregious than the simplified backgrounds or small enemy managerie.
Loved playing Psycho Fox with my mates back in 1989, good times indeed. When it comes to a SEGA mascot I think most people would gravitate towards Sonic, I think it has a lot to do with when you got into SEGA games. For me Wonder Boy (TomTom) will always be the character I associate the most with SEGA due to playing the hell out of Wonder Boy and Wonder Boy in Monster Land in the arcade and on the SMS from 1986 onwards.
I remember GamePro doing a big comic insert of this and thought it looked pretty cool, but I never once saw ANY Master System systems or games for sale anywhere near me as a kid. Like, ever.
In NJ they were in every toy store. In particular Toys R Us. Sears had them. Every major electronics store had them. I'm pretty sure Software Etc, and Electronics Boutique had them as well.

It was one of my favorite game on the system with Alex Kidd in Shinobi world, and the Donald Mickey made by Sega. As a kid, at first I hated the game, then when I learned about it I really loved it.
This was one of my earliest gaming experiences, and I remember it very fondly. Loved being able to switch between animals. SegaLord, I liked the part where you admitted you wanted to trash it, but then started to adjust to the gameplay and actually began to like it. That's one thing a lot of us real gamers can relate to, and it's very human. We can connect to that. Well done on this review! One of my favorite childhood games!
I remember seeing something, either a cart, box or ad about the Sapo Xulé version, but I can tell that Psycho Fox was really popular here in Brazil, most of us, including myself didn't finish the game at the time, but we did enjoy it, even if you have to get used to how it works. We had this Sapo Xulé (smelly feet frog) toy that had smelly feet once you took off his shoes, it was a funny toy that's also very 90's.
I had/have this still from my childhood complete. 2nd game I ever played after Alex Kidd. Completed it a few times as a kid and I have great memories of it. I must give it another run. Thanks for bringing back the memories man.
This game, like decap attack, alex kidd, wonderboy, some of the disney games, sonic, and others had these amazingly colourful, cartoon graphics, that scream quintessential sega to me. I adore them. But yes, actually playing any of these games have been no fun bc of the awkward controls. Takes a big man to admit he was wrong, I hope to learn them someday, so I can enjoy them more.
Wow, I was expecting SLX to totally trash this based on past comments, in fact I have dismissed it myself based on those comments. I'll give it a play!
I love this game - it was such a revelation. It's impossible to forget those nights when like four us gather and try to beat it. Because of unlimited continues, you always had a motivation to try again. I love everything about it, but as kids, we adored the ability to transform into different animals, and we've never figured out what that stickman figure was used for :)
As that kid who jumped at the SMS in 1987...I remeber a friend bringing this over, at the time we had already started with the Genesis) and Psycho Fox harkenes me back to the original SMS releases. It almost felt like it was a game we missed because of its style. It was a new old. Fwiw , I always thought this was better than any of the sonic games.
Loved this game growing up, had me going to the master system over the mega drive again and again. Definitely one I would be happy to see a remake/sequel to.
I've been told my Master System reviews are the best on UA-cam so it's always nice to see someone else cover Master System titles from time to time too! This is one game I have never bothered with though previously so maybe I'll give it a go!
This is one of those games like super Mario world where I wish I had it when I was a kid because I don't have the patience for it as an adult but as a kid I would have spent hours learning the quirks
all i knew about psycho fox for the longest time was that it had a novel soundtrack, and that it was one of those platformers where you had to be a die-hard enjoyer of platformers and able to push through its oblique mechanics innorder to be able to enjoy it, but i have seen people who are just that do just that, live, in recent memory
Hey, SLX, another good platformer for the Master System that was a success in Europe (and in Brazil, by proxy) was Asterix. I know that Asterix isn't known at all in the US, but it is a very, VERY popular comic book in Europe and Brazil and there was a good game for the MS. I remember it having big and colorful sprites and very nice gameplay.
Oh and thank you for reviaing your judgement. I was probably among the comments asking you to give it another go. Anyway, I'm sure that as a ki d with not many things to try you would probably get better and also get better feel for the mechanics earlier on as an adult with plenty of more interesting alternatives. ;)
This is one of the game I owned when I was a kid, which I bought because it looked nice, and I have found memories of it. Even though first contact IS rough, the game is rewarding once you master its mechanics. So, I do remember your first review, and thought you were a bit unfair 🙂 but I'm happy to see that you finally came to see its subtle charm 😉.
The cutesy 80s electro-music takes me back to that last vestige of childhood wonder, puberty and Nirvana round the corner, at a console whose games were 'controllable cartoons' in a way my old Specky could never rival.
It's definitely good but I still think miracle world and castle of illusion are the best platformers the SMS had. Beating it a handful of times definitely made me appreciate decap attack more than I already did since that game basically perfected what this was going for.
I never played Psycho Fox. I remember seeing it in Sega Visions and wanting to play it. But when Decap Attack came out, I loved that game. I’m sure Psycho Fox would be fun as well.
Played this game in my childhood, never beat, but got pretty far and I never knew that it had a menu with itens I could use, no wonder I couldn't beat it as a child, but even so I loved this game.
Love Psycho Fox! I beat it back in 1989 and just again recently! This game also had me learning about Japanese culture and folklore and Shinto, I really enjoyed this game.
I actually recently bought this, it's a classic from my childhood. Fun game overall but the strange momentum coupled with all of the leap of faiths and blind drops makes you die more than you should. Very easy to land directly before an enemy.
WOW, this takes me back... I LOOOVED this game, it was a lot of fun, always hoped Sega would keep this same kind of vibe on future games, but it was I think a one off...
The 'Pause Button issue' is way playing Master System on Game Gear was such a great experience, even with the small screen. 'Sapo Xulé' means 'Smelly Feet Frog'.. the title originates from a Braslian childreen' song.
I grew up with this game. I probably fired it up more often than Sonic or any other, this and Dynamite duck. We didn't have that many games anyway but it was always a blast. Exploring the levels and trying different paths is not that dissimilar of a feeling as playing an open world game today. You wonder what was on that ledge and then try to reach it on other playthroughs. Quite fun.
Hugely nostalgic for me. Staying up til all hours at my cousins place trying to finish it, only to have their dog Barney come and nudge the cartridge out of place on the last level
I loved this game. I used to speed run this game before I knew that was a thing. I can't remember the time (maybe 6 or 7 minutes) and I could do it on the Game Gear too.
For me this is up there with Alex Kid in the Miracle World and Castle of Illusion. An excellent and unique game. The momentum detail is unique, as you mention, no other game has that. It's lots of fun when you get it.
I love this game! Though at the time I had gotten this game as a Christmas present and beaten it in the early 90s as a wee lil' clueless American tyke, I was VERY confused by the ending!
I came here to say that this looks incredibly similar to Kid Cool (or Kool?) with the little guy you hang on to & how you skip across the water, and it is! 😅
One of my favourites on the Master System, funny thing when I replayed it a few months back I totally forgot about the Pause menu and changing character and was wondering why so many areas seemed impossible to get to as Fox 😆
To this day I still don't know why Psycho Fox goes by that name. He looks so friendly! I always felt that this and the Magical Flying whatever game on the Mega Drive were the missing links between Mario and Sonic, as the levels grew vertically and the physics got refined.
This was the second game I had ever played on my Master System back in 1990, and is still one of my favorite games of all time. Lots of feels when I remember my parents teaching me how to play this, Shinobi, Sonic, Golden Axe and Columns. Still have all of them, still play them all the time.

Video games sure are educational.
It was one of my favorite game on the system with Alex Kidd in Shinobi world, and the Donald Mickey made by Sega. As a kid, at first I hated the game, then when I learned about it I really loved it.
It's funny because this is my only day off and you upload right at the end of it right when I'm working my ass off. This is a treat
Decades later you are still bringing games out of obscurity and into our lives!
So many people hate this game - I loved this growing up!
My first game I ever played! A legendary game that deserves a real retro sucessor....and second game!
The Ape is my favourite!
I had/have this still from my childhood complete. 2nd game I ever played after Alex Kidd. Completed it a few times as a kid and I have great memories of it. I must give it another run. Thanks for bringing back the memories man.
One of my favourite childhood games :)
This was one of my show piece games to my friends while I was a Sega evangelist…
It's an underrated gem that deserves more love!
Wow, I was expecting SLX to totally trash this based on past comments, in fact I have dismissed it myself based on those comments. I'll give it a play!
Wow I forgot about psycho fox ! I loved this game, thankyou for doing a video on it.
Keep doing what you do, man!
Always happy when new sega lord x content drops. Good video.
I really love Asterix on the MS too and rate it as one of the MS's best platformers.
@@sunmoonstudios What about the sequel though ? I never played it...
Oh and thank you for reviaing your judgement. I was probably among the comments asking you to give it another go.
Anyway, I'm sure that as a ki d with not many things to try you would probably get better and also get better feel for the mechanics earlier on as an adult with plenty of more interesting alternatives. ;)
Perfect timing as i have tried to expand my SmS collection but was shocked at the orice of this title.
I've been waiting for his review for years loved this game as a kid
This is one of the game I owned when I was a kid, which I bought because it looked nice, and I have found memories of it. Even though first contact IS rough, the game is rewarding once you master its mechanics. So, I do remember your first review, and thought you were a bit unfair 🙂 but I'm happy to see that you finally came to see its subtle charm 😉.
Asterix and Castle of Illusions were popular in France.
The cutesy 80s electro-music takes me back to that last vestige of childhood wonder, puberty and Nirvana round the corner, at a console whose games were 'controllable cartoons' in a way my old Specky could never rival.
Was always curious about this one. I saw it in magazine ads often back in the day. Never tried it on emulation but will check it out.
loved this game on SMS & loved Decap Attack on MD years after !
Always good to have a new SMS video.
This was my favorite MS game back then but I can't play it anymore... Controls are terrible. But maybe I should give it another chance
It's definitely good but I still think miracle world and castle of illusion are the best platformers the SMS had. Beating it a handful of times definitely made me appreciate decap attack more than I already did since that game basically perfected what this was going for.
I still remember this one when I rented it long ago. I did not make it very far. But it made a lasting impression.
This is the real Bubsy OG, momentum speed and even aesthetics.
Loved this game since I first played it at my friends apartment in 1990
I grew up with this game.
Quite fun.
I love Decap Attack, so its awesome to learn about this predecessor.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with changing your opinion through learning.
That's wisdom.
Decapattack and magical hat was based on this game and improved on it massively.
For me this is up there with Alex Kid in the Miracle World and Castle of Illusion. An excellent and unique game. The momentum detail is unique, as you mention, no other game has that. It's lots of fun when you get it.
I always preferred Psycho Fox to Magical Hat / Decap Attack. SMS heads have always had it in their top ten.
Thanks for the vid, man; looks like it's time to boot up the game and try again! I hope I get to that place with it like you did :)
Cool to see the connection to Decap Attack
One of the first games I have memories of playing
Remember buying that and Vigilante from Toys R us with my birthday money. Many hours on this game.
Same company and same engine so that checks out. Only difference is Psycho Fox is actually a good game.
One of my favourites on the Master System, funny thing when I replayed it a few months back I totally forgot about the Pause menu and changing character and was wondering why so many areas seemed impossible to get to as Fox 😆
If I weren't such a huge Astérix fan, Psycho Fox would be my favourite Master System game.
I played this game a lot as a kid, it’s a lot of fun in my book.
Psyco Fox sounds like another game I experienced that was also hard to get into at first. Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers on PC. Yes it's a fan game.
Gotta give it up for that SMS sound chip! The drums are so tinny *chick* *chick* yea buddy!
Loved this game as a child
To this day I still don't know why Psycho Fox goes by that name. He looks so friendly!
I always felt that this and the Magical Flying whatever game on the Mega Drive were the missing links between Mario and Sonic, as the levels grew vertically and the physics got refined.
When I had a Sega Master system as a kid I had Alex Kidd and Psycho Fox 🦊 as my games. Psycho fox was the one I played the most. 😀
This is still one of my favorite SMS games ever, i love it 😍
Psycho Fox é um dos jogos mais bonitos, divertidos e memoráveis do Master System.
