    Corpse Killer may not offer a whole lot of variety in terms of gameplay, but the story itself is so over the top and fun that I think that alone makes it worth playing.

    I got a SEGA 32X towards the end of it's life when Kmart was starting to clear them out, and games where $25, or less, and one of the first games I picked up for the system next to Virtua Fighter, and Doom, was Cosmic Carnage, and for the $20 I payed for it I thought it was an alright game, but I liked playing the Cyber Brawl version better having people in the game with more gore. I did play it so much that yes I eventually did get the good ending twice(once on each version), having perfect runs taking very few hits(I don't remember which characters I used at the time). Having said that the game is a bit undercooked, and had it been given more time to bake in the oven so to speak, then I think it could have been right up there with Virtua Fighter as one of the best games for the 32X.
    IMHO SEGA screwed up royally with the 32X, and Saturn launch, and should have just released the 32X as a stand alone CD based console that could play Genesis carts(also be used a a RAM/save slot), and SEGA CD titles as an all in one system with 32X features, so a lot of developers would not have had as much trouble getting up to speed to develop for it, and just forgotten about the Saturn, as it bombed everywhere except Japan(yes it was popular in Portugal to some degree) being so difficult to develop for. Plus it would have lowered the cost of the console consoldating existing chipsets, while using existing controllers, etc... that consumers already owned, but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

    I've always wondered if Cosmic Carnage/Cyber Brawl was ever meant to be a port of Sega's arcade fighting game, Dark Edge at some point during development.
    They feel quite similar to some degree.

      @orderofmagnitude-TPATP 2 роки тому +2

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  2 роки тому +5

      I don't think so, however, it's clear they had contact with that development team as they give Special Thanks to a few members of Dark Edge's development team in the credits. Of special note, the team behind Cyber Brawl had a semi well received fighting game/Beat Em Up released prior to this called Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter. They would later develop Wonder Project J2 (N64), a followup to the SNES game. So I think with more time, this group was capable delivering a solid experience.

    • @thefurthestmanfromhome1148
      @thefurthestmanfromhome1148 2 роки тому +1

      Completely unrelated as Dark Edge ran on Seg's System 32 hardware which as the name implies, was 32-bit architecture.
      Cyber Brawl was simply a 16-bit game transfered to the 32-bit 32X
      Takayuki Kawagoe, a producer at Sega who produced Japan's 32X games, said the following in the book Sega Consumer History:
      The American side was the first to bring up the idea of making the 32X. The Mega Drive sold about 12 million units in America and 7 million units in Europe, and on top of that, there were those who believed that an expensive new console would not sell well in America. So it was decided to release a “power-up booster” for the Mega Drive.
      However, the game lineup was quite weak. There was no time to get ready, since we only had ten months between the decision to make the unit and the release. We were able to re-use the Mega Drive’s development tools to a certain extent, which made things a bit easier, but there were no 32X-specific tools at all. In the end, a lot of the games were just 16-bit games transferred to the 32X, such as Cyber Brawl (Cosmic Carnage)

    7:03 I uploaded a playthrough here on UA-cam with the good ending, a few things I can tell you on how to get the good ending. 1) You can lose a round and still get it. 2) You can play it on the easiest setting and still get it, unlike Street Fighter 2 where you have to be a least on the medium setting.
    My playthrough, adding up all the "Time Elapsed" at the end of every round came to 554 seconds or 9 minutes 14 seconds. I put all that info in the description.
    So, I'm not 100% sure if the timer is only adding up the in matches or also in between matches, but I'd lean to the only adding the in-match times. The longest time including in between matches I've seen and still getting the good ending was 16 minutes 7 seconds.
    So, it's probably 9 minutes 30 second or 10 minutes, in-match time.

    • @Jenovi
      @Jenovi  2 роки тому +3

      Great question. So it's a preference situation here. The 3DO has a cleaner picture, but in doing so, the image is washed out and the FPS is reduced from 15 to 12. The Sega CD has a richer color, a higher frame rate, but is plagued by dithering. I believe the PC version is essentially the same as the 3DO. I don't believe any version is censored, that's just an old rumor.

    Great to have you back. I was missing your videos. Night Trap looks great on 32X, but I still have a soft spot for the regular Sega CD version. It was mind-blowing seeing movie-like video coming from a Sega console back in the day. Of course, there was barely any gameplay in the "game", but it was impressive nonetheless. BC Racers was better on the Sega CD, even though both versions are pretty bad. If I recall correctly, the 32X lacked any hardware support for scaling and rotating sprites. That would explain the slowdown on Cosmic Carnage and the terrible frame rate on BC Racers and other games on the system. Excellent video, man.

    Erm, BC Racers is really good fun. The 32X version runs very smoothly but much too fast. It’s fascinating to see just how many sprites can scale on the 32X. The Mega CD version is choppy, but considering how many sprites it’s scaling, it’s forgivable. The speed is manageable though so it’s better despite the choppy action.

    I still laugh at those senate meeting about Night Trap, as a watcher of horror films all I can think is "You guys need to get out more." since it's the tamest horror story ever told. ^_^ I wish it were either more racy or more tame in hindsight since the middle ground is kind of dull imo. Not a fan but glad they remastered to the point anyone curious can play it.
    CC/CB is a game of unfulfilled potential, shame the design isn't more satisfying but that is hard to come by in that genre outside of the big staple fighters. Slowdown aside the engine is pretty stable and fast compared to other 32X games.
    Corpse Killer is my favorite DP game mainly because it's the most interactive and video game like title they ever made. I think they had very little budget at that point, the days of Sewer Shark/Double Switch scale budgets were over. Sure not the best example of a rale shooter but I admire their ambition to move past the Nemo standard.
    32X BC Racing should have been like PB&J for the hardware, the sprites transferred fine but that performance level is just embarrassing for something done well already before this version. Idk why but it seemed like everybody other than Nintendo usually couldn't make a good kart racer. O_o??? Think that's why the genre phased out for a time.

      I think too often it was engine first and game design second with these games. I always wanted a platformer/adventure game from that perspective but Sonic CD/Jazz Jackrabbit bonus stages was about it.

    I thought the 3DO Night Trap was better than 32x.

      So it's a preference situation here. The 3DO has a cleaner picture, but in doing so, the image is washed out and the FPS is reduced from 15 to 12. The Sega 32x-CD has a richer color, a higher frame rate, but is plagued by dithering. I believe the PC version is essentially the same as the 3DO.

      @@Jenovi oh interesting! I own it for 3DO, but only remember the 32x CD night trap from my sega friend who rented it and the fireman 32x CD game for a birthday once. I do have to say Sewer Shark on the 3DO is actually fun as you can play it...visually, for the directions 😲
      On Sega CD, I had to use the audio to play.
