Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive a bad, high-milage example of a rare car, and then drive a perfect, low-milage example of the same car back to back? Well, thats exactly what I've done here. Today, I find out if my Car Trek Maserati Coupe GT is better than a nearly perfect example of the final hurrah for this platform, the Maserati GranSport.
My German cars are still for sale! email me at ealvis@cox.net

Elliot is back! Dude I miss your videos, you’re so down to earth bro
Thanks Keith! I appreciate that very much!
Everyone needs a friend like Tyler Hoover.
Couldn't agree more
You hit the nail on the head, Elliott! Tyler's looks like it is owned by a banker or Italian stock broker whereas yours epitomizes the flashy gregarious 'look at me' statement that appeals to a young man with a dream-car poster mounted to his wall. Both have their place but only one evokes excitement and motivation to work harder to make it big. Thanks for sharing--to you and Tyler.
Well said Ramon! Thanks for watching.
Glad to see you making content again Elliott! Congratulations! Tyler is one heck of a friend.
Thanks Paul! Good to see you in the comment section again. Tyler is one good buddy.
Glad your back
Thank you! Always good to be back
If there's one thing I've learned from Car Trek it's that Ed, Freddie, and Tyler are insane... But the *second* thing I'd say I've learned is that the "perfect" car is the one you _want_ to drive, regardless of whether it has a perfect interior, decent mileage, or y'know... doors. I'm surprised you have started looking for cheap aftermarket replacements for help fix the minor issues it has.
You've got a good point. Unfortunately, the aftermarket is extremely limited because they made so few of the cars in the first place. So there just aren't really any 'cheaper' alternatives.
@@ElliottAlvis that's too bad... Though that suddenly reminds me how I'm watching another channel where this dude in Japan makes custom bike fairings out of cardboard mocks ups and fiber glass. So something non mechanical like a rear shelf or steering collar cover, you could probably DIY a replacement instead. Might not be pretty but it's an idea.
Elliott, you “stir my soul!” (to quote one of your lines in this video…) You did a great job with all the comparisons. Both cars look like a blast to drive! But I especially loved the “3rd Maserati…” and it’s sweet little driver… lol
Lol thanks mom!
Great video! I’ve had my Gran Sport since 2007 -> it’s a 2006. Stock GS horsepower is 396, up from 385. I have aftermarket rear Tubi exhaust and the Larini decats….and she screams.
Secondly, the only item that is “Ferrari” is the block, everything else is Maserati. Ferrari helped designed and they built the engine.
Thirdly, car has a top speed of over 180 mph, 0-62 in 4.8 seconds…not bad for a normally aspirated, heavy GT car.
People want perfection and that is not what this car is about….it’s about passion and history. This is a very understated car - and for the most part, a lot of people do not understand this car or Italian cars for that matter. If you want perfection - buy a “yawn” Mercedes/Audi/BMW or Porsche…a dime a dozen.
Kindly,
Stephen
I believe these were actually made in the Ferrari factory at the time, so they're actually all Ferrari!
But yeah the gransport is a great car that flies under the radar!
As an owner of GranSport Spyder I can confirm that F1 transmissions can last up 60000 miles. Some folks even do more. You should know how to drive them. That hype over manuals is a "flavour of the month". They are still produced to support demand: Evora, Z coupe from Nissan, etc. but you won't find F1 transmission for the bargain price like in Masi. 4.2 engine is also bulletproof. Happy driving to everyone!
Real question is when did Tyler get that Maserati ? I don’t recall him releasing it yet on his channel
He hasn’t even driven it yet actually lol. It’s for his Motor Trend show: Car Issues
Fun video. We're all glad to see you're back posting- love the cars and cat shirts. Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks Tyler! Have a good weekend yourself!
the king of cat shirts returns!
You know it! 🐱
What a way to come back to youtube. Thanks for bringing us back into the studio. Saw the details for automobilia this year, are you planning on taking something down to Douglas for this years show?
Good to see you still going at it. Always enjoy the content and the shirts.
Your car has so much more character and such a great story! Yeah, it's got a few things wrong with it but there's a story behind all of it. Glad to see it get coverage on the channel again 👍
Everyone needs a friend like Elliot Alvis…one that you can trust to loan your Maserati to. Love the videos, EA
Tyler Hoover is becoming the Daddy of all Kansas auto youtubers.
Always was. it's like an out of control Maury Povich episode over there.
He already was, but he becomes more powerful with each passing day.
But he'll never take Daddy Doug Demuro's throne!
I mean...both are really amazing 🤩
Exactly I would wanna drive both 😎
I agree! They both rule in their own ways.
I was so excited to see a new video today!!!! Mr Motory Notary, you are so correct about having a nice daily driver that you don't have to worry about!!! Thank you for this video!
Hopefully one day you will fix that Alarm issue! Its always funny seeing your four-ways on
Yay you're back! I'm willing to endure an Omaze ad anytime to get my Elliott fix!
What a stupid question, the answer obvious: the white one😏
Haha, I appreciate it.
The Big Chill (1983)
Michael (Jeff Goldblum) : I don't know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They're more important than sex.
Sam Weber (Tom Berenger) : Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex.
Michael : Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization?
it totaly suck when youtube does not show for days you released a new video
I agree, not cool UA-cam!
Great job Elliott! This comparison video was a pleasure to watch and it was awesome to experience how great your Cartrek Maserati is! Thank you so much for sharing these two amazing machines!
Well thanks for watching as always Mitchell!
@@ElliottAlvis You are very welcome and I really appreciate your personal message.
How are things going with you? I’m sure that you get a ton of DM’s, but I wrote to you on Instagram to see if you are okay 👌.
The GranSport is shiny, but it's not as willing to tell its story, probably because it sat in a garage most of its life. The GT might have had some horrible things done to it, but it has character, and character does a lot for the emotional attachment to a car. Plus, as you said, it's already been bumped around and dinged up, so you don't have to worry about preserving its perfect paint job. You can drive it and have fun without that layer of anxiety! Also, it just sounds so much more rowdy, and therefore better.
Glad to see another video, Elliott! I really enjoy your car reviews, and it seems like a less expensive way to get a video out than trying to improve the fleet over every episode. Thank you, and I hope you have a great weekend!
Very well-said Bunker! I always appreciate and value your comments. Have a good weekend!
Nice to see you again - and yes, you are of course so so right! Take care!
Thanks Kristian!
You can always bird dog Copart for a Coupe with a blown engine or body damage and strip the parts you need for the interior. However, the White car is probably the better car to live with. You don't worry about car dings, and a clutch is so under appreicated.
Ayyyyyye look who's back
Elliot is the only person in a video to love a single clutch automatic.
You're not wrong James. But I do love them.
Interesting comparison, I agree with your findings. 👍
Thanks! 👍
Thank you for the video. I have a 2002 GT stick, drove the CC and love the stick. More exciting driving it and can fix stuff myself.
Welcome Back My Dude
Thank you Danies!
I love these cars, so little content on them on YT. Wish you'd made some more vids with it.
Working on it!
There is something about a beater supercar that i love. You can do what you want to it and not worry about anything and you can actually drive it and thrash it.
Good buy Elliott!
Thanks!
Both look like a Prelude. I just love my 3200gt with the 🪃. And hearing the 2 blow off valves.
Great content as always
Thank you!
EA it’s great to see you today on my 📺 screen, good video to btw.
Hey, Thanks Trevor! I appreciate you watching.
Welcome back!
Thanks Sock!
I think you should turn your channel into a flip series. Sell the Maserati, Volvo and BMW, use that money to buy a car that is under valued and needs a little love. Something you can make some money with. Flip that car and trade into something a little nicer that needs the same thing. I love that concept on YT. Not many are doing it and that would interest me. Alex at LSC has a E39 he is working (slowly) and i love it. I think this would bring the views. You have the garage, the skills, and if you sell the fleet, some seed money.
I like the way you think Jason!
Having THIS model Maserati is very darn cool, even without the 'Ferrari' engine - Got the
coupe and Spyder. Love them to bits.
the background music while your talking is not needed lol good content as always
Liking, commenting and .,...well...ive been subbed ....
Love the verdict, over the fact that while one of the cars may be better, the other spawns so much more emotion!
Thank you for your like and comment man! I am glad you agree with my verdict lol
I wish you had put Tyler in the summary shot, mumbling something along the lines of ‚better is better, stupid wrap, stupid wing‘. It would have hit the comedy note just right for me 😉
Great video Elliott. Your GT manual Maserati sounds better. I wish I could find you some proper fitting wheels and tires. Some salvage yard needs to help you out!
Thanks! I actually have a set of OEM wheels for it, but then I would lose part of it's signature look!
Loved the little car❤😂
I prefer the Coupe GT hands down. I think the front end looks better, and not to mention I was never taught how to drive an automatic, so having 3 pedals was a must. I had a '02 for a few years as a daily and never had any issues other than the heater core which was pretty easy to replace. My only complaint was it drew too much attention as a daily.
nice man! I just sold my 2005 Maserati Cambiocorsa coupe. The clean one has the chrome grills called vintage package, mine doesn't come with it so it has a black grills instead. The 4200 GT/CC is the true Maserati. The clean one is called Gran Sport. But if you have a 2005 Coupe (not gran sport) you would get same GS bumpers because it's the last production year
Well I came to that conclusion before your video already, but it was cool to see you explaining why your car trek one is better 🤣👍🏻
@Elliott Alvis take a look at the Maserati Gran Sport MCV edition it is even more limited (only 180) and the highest trim level that final year, special carbon seats, blue carbon fiber trim on interior and exterior as well as some exterior aero and performance upgrades.
I've seen pictures! Gorgeous cars.
Wonderful to see you back Elliot - oh how much did Tyler pay you to use that pic of him ? - how ever much it it was , it wasn't enough - PS excellent video
Haha, thanks Colin! I don't even think Tyler has that picture of himself. I just have it on my phone from a few years ago when we were at Car Week. It's the only and best picture to use when referencing him 😂
@@ElliottAlvis Absolutely, and as I said a really fun video
Elliot, I really enjoy your channel. I hope you can continue it. I pray that God helps you through your personal challenges.
9:45 a lot less smoke out of YOUR beater.......
The coupes are beautiful, one of the prettiest cars ever made. The 3200 taillights were just atrocious but the U.S. coupes are absolutely perfect👌🏻
They are beautiful cars I agree! Surprised you don’t like the 3200 taillights. Most people yearn for those!
Have a great Fathers day weekend with your family.
Thank you so much Anthony!
It will be nice if you make a video working on this car, like maintenance and other issues.
First of all, big thank you to Hoovie for just LENDING you a Maserati, now that's a good friend! I wish he'd shout you out more on his channel, or, if Tavarish had spelled your name right, that would have been nice too, but I digress...
Second of all, you left out the most important thing, the Car Trek car has provenance! Something some random grey Mazzi rolling down the road doesn't have. At least, not yet, Car Issues Season 3 has aired yet 😉
You've got a great point there!
I have a Gran Turismo Americano by Pontiac. It's okay.
Hey, at least they sort of share a name lol
I just wish people would actually:
1. Understand this car.
2. Know what it is.
3. How to properly maintain and drive it.
It’s a damn phenomenal car and a lot of people do not understand Maserati. It’s not a drag car, nor is it a sports car but a very very good GT car with power and the ability to drive at very high autobahn speeds without breaking a sweat. If Maserati wanted to build a car to compete with all the muscle cars and super cars they could easily do that. One can’t forget about the MC12 and the new MC20.
so glad you included your daughters car watched whole video and kept saying hers was best out of all of them
Hers really is the best. And it has the least amount of parts to malfunction 😂
Wait. Tyler has a Maserati?
Glad to see another video. Hope everything is ok.
The Maserati is for season 3 of his Motor Trend show: Car Issues
The gran sport kinda sounds like 2 4 cylinders going at it.
Small displacement V8's do have a very unique sound.
Wow, 3 great Maseratis!
I could only afford the tribute version.
The tribute version still rules! 😂
uhhh.. When did Hoovie get a Maserati? Glad to see you're back! Hope things are working out for you.
It won't be on his channel, it's for his Motor Trend show: Car Issues.
Thank you Elliott, for letting the cat out of the bag about Season 3 of Car Issues.
I think you have a future youtube star cruising around at your feet. she's adorable. cherish every moment.
Aww thanks RJ, I love her. She's good at being on camera for her age!
@@ElliottAlvis yes she is, and she's a cutie.
I'd def rather own the Car Trek Maserati, because I def can't afford to insure the other one.
Haha, I know the feeling!
Greetings Mr Motary Notary, I hope that all is well with you!!! I think that Tyler's Maserati is nice but it lacks the character & personality that yours has!!! Your Maserati really commands attention wherever it goes, it sounds great too!!! Thanks for sharing this exciting video!!! 👍👍🙂
Thank you so much Christopher! I couldn't have summarized it better myself.
@@ElliottAlvis 👍👍
I don't know if it is just the camera angle, but it looks like you furthest passenger side hazard light bulb is out.
It could be, but I have no warnings about it on my dash. I'll have to look into it!
I literally just bought an 03 Spyder 😅 can't wait to pick it up and hear that Italian sound
Congratulations, the 2003 Maserati Spyder is a great car at a great price. Be patient and be prepared for repairs and maintenance. Join the Maserati Life Forum. Find a local, independent technician that works on Maseratis. Gradually learn to do minor repairs yourself. I currently have 105,000 miles on my 2006 GranSport and she still runs strong!
I think people NEVER talk about these early 2000s Maseratis because of how understated and Prelude-like they look. They didn't seem to have much care put into the design, which is why I agree with you on the far worse condition Car Trek version being better. It's so much more characterful and exciting looking!
They look gorgeous in person, nothing like a prelude. It's a. Understated design, but in person it's gorgeous
Yes.
wait...isnt ths gransport the one that recently didn't meet reserve on cars&bids ?
... Perhaps
@@ElliottAlvis hoovie bought it didn't he lmao
Yes you are!
I don't disagree but I would fix try to fix the sound system. Get something to cover trunk deck. By first try fix the car tracking. I would not replace bushing ,but I do tend trust cars more if the track straight down the road
Your interior would be way nicer than Sweet T Hoover's if someone hadn't ripped it apart, that's for sure. When I think Maserati grand tourer, I think fine, supple Italian leather and some beautiful wood. That was most certainly a fantastic place to be before a prior owner decided to do, whatever that was
I agree. GT cars needs lots of leather, and mine certainly fits that description lol
I'd still tend to lean more towards bargain exotics. I'm more than confident that I'd have no regrets in the end, driving something that's 1/2 to 3/4 the car of the super high priced one for a small fraction of the price.
the wrap and the spoiler of the car trek maserati never hooked me; i'd basically revert that car to stock (minus the exhaust and the wheels)
Your take is correct, I love that car 😃
Thanks Ralph!
Driving your beater is like when I had a beater 4 x 4 pickup that I paid $700 cdn for. I was loading some lumber with a buddy and he bashed into the side of the bed. "oh sorry, oh wow, I didn't mean to do that" I looked at him, looked at the scratch, and banged another 2 x 4 into the same spot. WHO CARES? lol...
There's something to be said about beaters........door dings? pshaw.....bird crap? blah blah blah....stone chip? yeah whatever dude lol.....
Hoovie to the rescue is the proper phrase
you have the better deal going on by far!
Thanks Eagle, I tend to agree!
I've been rewatching your older videos to get my Car/Cat fix. I'll let you borrow and review my Omaze McLaren GT (when I win).
Hey, I like the sound of that Kerry!
i doo agree
The gransport came with beautiful wheels. Too bad some one put those hideous chrome wheels on it.
Not my favorite either, but the car is still fantastic!
Your exhaust is throatier and your amber headlights are killer!
When will car issues air in europe, haven't seen An episode feel so left out. At least i can see some content true the motary notary
Cool cars
I agree! Thanks Mark.
I just can't get past the yellow headlights - I know it's like that on purpose, but it reminds me of a car thats been left in the sun for 30 years and the Perspex clear coat has gone all yellow and crusty - or some Japanese ricer from the 90's where everyone was putting yellow transfers over their headlights. Having said that the wheels on the other car look even worse than the headlights on Elliott's car - but then there is the awful mechano wing on Elliott's car... Oh well beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that... Anyway they are both lovely cars that have just had some questionable choices made and nothing that can't be fixed so I'd be happy with either of them :-)
lol, those are all fair points!
The Ferrari engine bugs me because the internals are not Ferrari. Just like the people that say Alfa Romeos are also Ferrari engines. Even the 4 cylinder ones. Which they used to be, but aren't anymore. I've literally heard that the 4C was a Ferrari 458 engine, cut in half. That's not true! And the V6 was a V8 with 2 cylinders cut off. Yes, that used to be true...but isn't anymore. This is for the new Maseratis I'm talking about.
So you're saying my 1.4 liter fiat used to be a Ferrari? I always thought it sounded more like a Lambo lol
Exactly Clif. You get it.
the silver maseratis headlights are hazy the rims look ugly the grill ugh i would change it
Elliot you should restore yours back to its original condition...🙂🇬🇧🇺🇲🇬🇧🇺🇲
I was tempted to, but it’s a little too far gone. And then it won’t be recognizable anymore!
Great video Elliot, glad Tyler let you burrow it. You should see if he'll help you line them up and see which one is really faster.
Thanks Jeremy! I am hoping we can line them up one day.
Replace the suspension bushings on your car. Don't worry about the cosmetics, take care of the mechanicals first.
I actually like those wheels on it
They've been growing on me the last few days. They are very period correct.
Sorry, but I like Elliott's wheels better.
No engine covers less stuff to catch on fire 😂
Oo that's a good point!
Please do a 4th gen camaro
You should invest in a 3D printer to do a home repair on those engine covers. I'm going to experiment with 3D printer fabrication
It would take a pretty sizable printer, but that’s not a bad idea.
@@ElliottAlvis you know a lot of 3D printer users do prints in smaller pieces, then put them together like a puzzle. There's a guy on TIkTok @frankly_Built you should see
The answer to the title question is YES. The reason is because it's the cartrek car for me. Bad car, unfortunate previous owner, interesting but ultimately forgettable story. The other is a great car you actually might enjoy driving and retain some kind of value lol. Its possible to jazz up the banker edition as well if you were inclined.
Hoovies car sounds so much nicer to. Less like a broken Honda....
Well, yours is a manual, so yes, it's better.
Thanks for your manual elitist input.
I prefer the car trek version
As do I Mark. Glad we agree!
