  • Ryan takes a look at the 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro, a large SUV with serious off-road credentials. Is it still a worthy buy in a world flush with unibody crossovers? Find out in this episode of the AutoNation New Car Test Drive.
    Packing a 4-liter V6 engine, the adventurous 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is capable of 270-horsepower. A part-time all-wheel drive system paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission makes driving both on paved roads and wilderness trails a breeze. The shocks on this 4Runner have Bilstein remote reservoirs and the frame boasts an aluminum skip plate.
    A large cargo area in the rear offers plenty of space for storing supplies like camping equipment or vacation suitcases. There is also a power inverter for plugging in electronic devices to make sure all of your phones or gadgets are powered up and ready to go. Featuring an XM radio, navigation, a multi-terrain select system, and variable seat warmers, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner is full of technological advances.
    With its classic body-on frame, the 2016 Toyota 4Runner combines everything that is great about the original model and the newest advances. Explore the 2016 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro yourself at your nearby AutoNation Toyota dealership [www.autonation.com/find-a-sto...].

      Would quickly disagree, and so would 99% of the other jeep owners out there lol. Not doubting the 4 runner, but the FJ was better.

    • @cody8992
      @cody8992 7 років тому +11

      DaShnipa sorry but the 4Runner is all around better than the FJ I also owned a Jeep one will never make that mistake again. The FJ had its good point but had some issues like very poor visibility just like a wrangler.

    • @DaShnipa
      @DaShnipa 7 років тому

      Cody Earnshaw but for an offroad enthusiast and not someone who uses their offroad intended truck to grab groceries the wrangler and the FJ will quickly shame a 4 runner. Its all about usage. If your buying a wrangler to commute 100 + miles a day you've bought the wrong vehicle....

    • @cody8992
      @cody8992 7 років тому +2

      DaShnipa I understand the point about commuting with the wrong vehicle. But stock side by side off road the 4Runner can hold to the others easily. I feel confident about this because I have drove all 3 and owned 2.

    • @DaShnipa
      @DaShnipa 7 років тому

      I've driven all three and own 1. That one is the only one with a solid axle and the only one I've seen go into and out of places the other two can only dream of. But that's what i bought it for. If i wanted an occasional fire road and dd... I'd get a taco.

    Hard to beat Toyota for off road adventures! They are 2nd to none in reliability and hold their value better than most. The 4.0 is a bullet proof design and I would rate it up there with the 3.4 for reliability but better performance. Would rather have the 4.0 than the new 3.5 that is going in the new 4Runners!

    I would agree to disagree...the FJ was as good, and possibly better as a pure offroad vehicle...but was smaller and had less carrying capacity. Both the FJ and the 4runner have their strong suits. As for the jeep, a highly capable off road vehicle no doubt, but "better", I would disagree. It all depends on what you want your vehicle to do. I won't go into details for both, but each have their niche in the market.

    I like it but I disagree with your statement about visibility. I test drove on the other day and the front windshield provides poor visibility at best. The other points of visibility were fine but I wouldn't say the 4runner has great visibility. I am basing this off of the visibility in my car, Subaru Crosstrek. I do like the 4runner over all though, they are just so darn expensive.

    BTW, the Limited has a much stiffer less body roll than the TRD. It's got the special suspension that self adjust and on turns, you can put a coin on the dash and it wont slide around. Also for both models, say your in rush hour traffic, simply move it to the manual mode and yes, 4runners will hold that what ever gear you want which is great. Since alot of these automatic cars will shift regardless. I shift the 4runners to say 2nd or 3rd and keep it their. so that on stop lights and stop and go, the transmission doesn't shift so often reducing power, response and acceleration. In that mode, you 4runner is shockingly quick cause you've only allowed it to go up to 3 gear in bumper to bumper. thiird gear gets you easy 40 mph. And in rush our, even keeping it on second makes it less burdensome on the transmission and you're not lugging it to get power and stomping on the pedal.

    • @HumbertoYi0878
      @HumbertoYi0878 8 років тому

      2010V6RAV4 reliability is fairly pointless argument at this point, all motors are pretty damn good. The Toyota motor just doesn't cut it anymore, the 4 door wrangler is now faster....let that sink in...a wrangler should only be faster than a huffy ridden by a 7 year-old, that's it. The camry produces almost as much power and TQ as this motor, and weights allot less. It's an "ok" motor, and then combine it with that dinosaur 5 speed, it's out of date

    • @JackFN_VR64

    • @micalan7
      @micalan7 7 років тому

      Won't be worth anything in 3 yrs? GC more reliable? Just curious - What planet do you hail from? 1) Check your numbers.
      There is truth in the bitching about the old 4L and the 5spd. It would be nice to get some better returns for mpg but until those 8 speed trans and the software that run them get better, you're better off with the ancient 5spd. The 8's have trouble deciding which gear they want, the top gears are just overdrives.
      As far as the resale values are concerned, I don't know what to say other than you're wrong. I just totalled my 2014 Trail with 58K and insurance appraised it 4K less than purchase price, brand new. Doubt a similarly equipped GC would get the same. Probably close to 10k difference.

    No way in hell are you going to get 17 around town. I own the TRD and Limited model. My wife and Both have never seen anything above 13 MPG in town for the Limited and 14.5 for my TRD. We don't abuse the trucks, accelerate smoothly keeping the RPM below 3000.
    Highway is dependent, depending on weather, load, driving style and how much gas you crank in. My TRD gets..about 26 MPG for the 1st half of the tank, then down to 17mpg from half to Empty. Limited first half gets me 32 and latter half 16mpg . But a good feature about the 4runner is that the tank is huge! if you fill past that first click, I'm able to fit 28 gallons from the empty line on both. I was able to drive 1000 miles stopping only twice.

      Go read Toyota's advert on TRD Pros... they said it not me: "Turns heads as quickly as it climbs hills" and that its "born from lessons learned" from Baja... Last time I checked that is a race. I have had one for a little over a year now and can tell you that Toyota set the throttle response way to low making it very slow and somewhat annoying when passing or going up hill on the highway. Its almost like a Prius engineer got their little hippy fingers on it somehow... So I stand by my statement, for a 4.0 it is SLOW especially for a race inspired vehicle. Good off-road tho.

Oh and before anyone says this is a rugged truck and certain luxurys are expected to be missing, it has Facebook and pandora. Oh, and its really slllloooow.

    wish toyota would update the interior, you pay top dollar for the vehicle but the inside just looks cheap.

      Roman:D If you want a better interior you should try a Lexus GX which is the same as the 4Runner. They can't go all out in the interior looking like the Lexus which is their luxury brand. I prefer this interior keeping it simple. You pay top dollar because of how well it is built for off road, not for the interior. Were driving a vehicle.

    Throw back..yeah I'll say no push button start and whats with the front end, epic ugly. Rest of the vehicle is pretty sweet as you'd expect from Toyota.
